As Square Enix release Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles on PC, I renew my demand for my mate Richie to return the PSP copy I lent him 15 years ago

*cavernous, torturous, 20-second-long sucking-in of breath*

RICHAAAARRRRD. RICHAARD WAAAAALKER. RICHARD WALKER, DEPUTY EDITOR OF XBOX ACHIEVEMENTS. RETURN IT TO ME, RICHARD. RETURN WHAT IS OWED. YOU KNOW OF WHAT I SPEAK. J’ACCUSE, RICHARD. J’ACCUSE YOU OF DÉROBING MA JEUX PORE LE ORDINATEUR. VOULEZ VOUS COUCHER AVEC MON TACTICS RPG, RICHARD?? LE VAUTOUR ENCERCLE LA CARCASSE, LE BOL EST SUR LA TABLE – COMMENT PUIS-JE ME RENDER CHEZ LE BOULANGER????

The year was 2010 when you took it from me, Richard – the mother of all grid-based battlers, one of the greatest digital fables of all time, a thrilling study in dynastic intrigue and medieval warfare. I had yet to even finish the game myself, having long coveted it as a youth consigned to PS1 PAL purgatory. But I could not resist your overtures, Richard! I assumed that you would return it to me in a month, perhaps two. Little did I know that Final Fantasy Tactics’ acclaimed branching Job system would school you in the dark arts of back-stabbing and betrayal, that it would poison your dove-white temperament and set you upon the road to villainy.

I thought we were bros, Richard! Kindred spirits forged in the flame of mutual incompetence! We came up in this business together! Remember when I held your dictaphone for you while you interviewed BioWare’s Ray Muzyka, Richard? I was terrified it wouldn’t pick up his audio, so resorted to kneeling between you like a penitent sinner, waggling the mic back and forth! We looked like idiots, but it’s fine! It’s fine! We got over it! I barely ever think of the scalding embarrassment and humiliation!! Muzyka is some kind of magic medicine brewer now, anyway – who gives a fuck what he thinks? The key thing is that it was a bonding experience, a foundation for everlasting trust! What did I ever do to you, Richard!? What crime have I committed for you to treat me this way?!?!

I name you, Richard, I name you in the public forum, in the court of our peers. With bleeding hands I carve these words in ten-feet high letters upon the mausoleum of posterity: “Here stands indicted Richard Walker, bastard. Faithless one! Breaker of oaths! Smudger of covenants! Pact-shirker! Dog-leech! Cut-purse! Larkspell! Trencher-mouth! Let none welcome him. Let all faces turn from him. Let all doors be closed to him! Let his food taste like ashes and his favourite videogames play like The Lord of the Rings: Gollum!”

You thought I had forgotten, Richard. And to be honest, I did forget, because it has been such a very long time, Richard, but Square Enix did not forget – today, they release a new version of the game on Steam with enhanced visuals, and lo do I rouse in horrified recognition from my dreamless sleep in the murmuring silt of the abysmal sea, lo do I rise in the coruscating incandescence of my absolute fury and indignation to burst upon the surface world and accost the traitor!

RICHAAAARD. RICHAAAARD WAAAALKER. My PSP’s battery may have swollen up like a diseased appendix, but I still have my 32MB Memory Stick Duo with a campaign save. It cries out to me for vengeance! Vengeance upon that great unclean soul and fugitive from justice, Richard Walker, Deputy Editor of Xbox Achievements!

Another Dragon Quest RPG has been announced, as Square Enix capitalises on renewed series success

by admin September 18, 2025

A brand-new Dragon Quest game has been revealed – and no, I don’t mean Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined.

Dragon Quest Smash/Grow is a roguelite RPG coming to mobile devices globally next year. As the title suggests, players attack to build their special moves in order to smash foes, and then use crystals dropped by defeated enemies to grow their character. As you’d expect from a roguelite, the game features random Blessings and ever-changing tactical situations.

Launching a new mobile game, however, does seem a bit of an odd choice for Square Enix. In the past couple of years, the company has shut down a whole string of underperforming mobile titles, including Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius and Final Fantasy 7 battle royale The First Soldier. What’s more, the company’s financial report in May revealed sales and profits from mobile games had dropped “sharply”, likely due to the closure of these games.

Equally, the Dragon Quest series is having a bit of a moment, so it makes sense to capitalise on that with a new free-to-play mobile game. Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake has been a massive success for Square Enix, particularly in Japan, and that will be followed by Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake coming later this year.

That’s in addition to Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, as revealed at last week’s Nintendo Direct. It’s a new version of the PS1 classic, with a streamlined story and new visual style that will be out next year.

Dragon Quest Smash/Grow is also out in 2026, but there will be a closed beta test next month, from 14th October until 21st October. You’ve got until 2nd October to apply for access on the game’s website.

Square Enix shutters two ten-year-old mobile games

by admin August 28, 2025

Square Enix has shut down Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and Dragon Quest of the Stars in Japan.

Both were released in 2015 and will hit their ten-year anniversaries on October 22 and October 15, respectively. However, both will be sunsetted as of noon (presumably Japan Standard Time) on Friday, October 31.

In two statements (thanks, PocketGamer) posted to the official social media accounts of each game, Square Enix “sincerely thanked” everyone who has “played with us for such a long time.”

After stating the “management team sincerely apologize[d] to our loyal customers for this sudden announcement,” Square Enix then told Dragon Quest of the Stars players: “Since launching on Thursday, October 15, 2015, we have worked hard every day to provide better service, but we have come to the conclusion that it will be difficult to provide a service that satisfies our customers going forward, and have therefore decided to terminate service.”

In-app purchases for both mobile games have been suspended.

Square Enix recently released its financial results for the three months ended June 30, 2025, reporting declines across its net sales and profit compared to the same period last year. There was a 25% decline in revenue in its Digital Entertainment section – which includes its video game business – due to new titles generating lower sales.

‘To put it bluntly, it was copying others’: Former Dragon Quest producer says he left Square Enix because the developer was too focused on making ‘safe’ games

by admin August 20, 2025

Former Dragon Quest producer Ryutaro Ichimura says he left Square Enix because the developer and publisher was too focused on making “safe” games.

In a recent episode of ReHacQ (translated by Automaton), Ichimura says he had always planned to go independent eventually, but Square Enix’s way of handling things sped that process up significantly. According to him, the publisher has been pretty focused on “safe” projects over the last several years, which he wasn’t too keen about.

He says that in comparison to current-day Square Enix, the early days of Dragon Quest were all about innovation. “In Dragon Quest 2, you had a three-person party. In Dragon Quest 3, you could change jobs. In Dragon Quest 4, party members could fight using AI,” he said. “Each entry pushed the series forward, both through the evolution of game mechanics and by leveraging the latest hardware at the time.”

It seems as though Ichimura wasn’t fond of Dragon Quest spin-offs like Builders—a more narrative-driven Minecraft—and the Pokémon Go-inspired Dragon Quest Walk. He says Square Enix pivoted to hitting its own version of popular games to try and nail some guaranteed winners, especially as Dragon Quest’s popularity outside of Japan wasn’t as stellar as it hoped. “To put it bluntly, it was copying others,” Ichimura said.

Automaton notes that Ichimura calls the Dragon Quest spin-offs “pakuri kikaku,” meaning copycat projects. I do feel like that’s a little harsh in the case of Dragon Quest Builders, which feels like it does enough differently from Minecraft to shake off too many comparisons.

I also feel like if anyone is taking risks with strange games right now, it’s Square Enix. Does it put any effort into marketing any of them? Hell no, but it has at least tried to push out some weirder stuff like Foamstars (which, to be fair, was very Splatoon-coded), Harvestella, and The DioField Chronicle. And lest we forget Forspoken, a game that very much had the potential to be rad if it wasn’t, well, a bit boring.

I do agree with his sentiment at large, though: bigger games are getting safer, and we’re all suffering for it. Why reinvent the wheel when there’s a perfectly good one to slap another coat of paint on and roll out to the masses?

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

Games are getting more expensive to make and people are increasingly less willing to risk spending the dough on potential duds that get banished to a decades-long backlog. It’s a tough situation to be in on all sides, and while I don’t entirely agree with Ichimura’s sentiment, his frustrations are certainly valid.

Dragon Quest producer Ryutaro Ichimura left Square Enix because it was prioritizing “safe” or “copycat” games

by admin August 20, 2025

Dragon Quest producer Ryutaro Ichimura said he left publisher Square Enix because the company was prioritizing “safe” projects.

Ichimura joined Enix in 2000 and spent most of his career working on the Dragon Quest series, progressing to producer on Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King and Dragon Quest 9: Sentinels of the Starry Skies.

But as the developer told ReHacQ, he ended up leaving because “to put it bluntly, [Square Enix] was copying others.”

“In DQ 2, you had a three-person party, in DQ 3 you could change jobs, in DQ 4, party members could fight using AI. Each entry pushed the series forward, both through the evolution of game mechanics and by leveraging the latest hardware of the time,” Ichimura said (as transcribed and translated by Automaton).

According to Automaton’s reporting, Ichimura felt Dragon Quest was a “leader” in the RPG space, and he was keen to “build something from zero.” But with spiralling costs, the producer felt Square Enix was less willing to innovative and instead focused on its tentpole franchises or “pakuri kikaku” — copycat projects — like the Minecraft-like Dragon Quest Builders, or Pokémon Go-inspired Dragon Quest Walk.

When Square Enix wouldn’t greenlight an idea for “game in which players could learn about wordbuilding and story structure through gameplay, and then build their own Sragon Quest-style games,” Ichimura left.

Ryutaro Ichimura formed PinCool, a new NetEase Games-funded development studio, in May 2023.
