We’ve been expecting today’s reveal, of course, ever since Activision confirmed back in July that Black Ops 7 would be part of Opening Night Live’s line-up this year. This is technically the game’s second “reveal”, because its first outing was at the very end of the Xbox Showcase back in June.

Today’s showcase was a lot more detailed, offering a look at gameplay that went beyond just a simple teaser of the game’s setting.

First things first, the leaked November release date turned out to be accurate. Black Ops 7 is set for launch on November 14. As for today’s reveal, its focus was mainly on the larger systems, features, and new mechanics arriving with the game. As previously announced, the co-op campaign (four-player) returns, but Treyarch is adding a pretty unusual twist to that.

The campaign’s final mission is what the developer calls Endgame, and it’s essentially a replayable, open-world section with some RPG and extraction elements. You get to customise your loadout and take on missions and other challenges within runs, where you can also level up and earn new abilities.

We also got a look at some of the futuristic weaponry we’ll be able to wield, and a few of the locations we’re going to be visiting. There’s a big emphasis on movement in Black Ops 7, which builds on Black Ops 6’s Omnimovement system with new possibilities, including the return of wallrunning.

Round-based Zombies is a core feature of the game, of course. This year, you can look forward to vehicle-based gameplay, as well as the return of Survival maps. Multiplayer was touched on, but the full reveal won’t arrive until Call of Duty: Next on September 30. There’s going to be a beta following that, too, taking place October 2-8.

Black Ops 7’s story takes place in the near future, a decade after the events of Black Ops 2. The game is the first consecutive Black Ops release in Call of Duty history, following last year’s Black Ops 6.

As beloved as the Black Ops name is, however, this year’s game faces tough competition in the form of Battlefield 6, a game whose beta has been breaking records throughout the month, overtaking even the most popular Call of Duty release on Steam.

There’s still a lot yet to be revealed for Black Ops 7, but community sentiment so far has been a lot more in favour of Battlefield 6 over it. Call of Duty rarely misses, though, and even with it does, it still manages to be the best-selling game in the year of its release.

Call of Duty is aiming for its next campaign to be a part of the “connected” experience of the overall live-service game, starting with Black Ops 7.

During a media briefing event last week, Treyarch revealed that the BO7 campaign is playable for up to four players in co-op, played over 11 standard, explosive set-piece missions. Not only that, but you will be able to unlock campaign-specific weapon camos (including four Mastery camos), reticles, player cards, and other cosmetics, all while earning XP to progress your overall level and even individual battle passes. There will even be daily and weekly challenges to complete.

The campaign stars David Mason and his Spectre One team, including Mike Harper, Eric Samuels, and newcomer Leilani Tupuola, with support from BO6 character Troy Marshall who is now several decades older in this story. Some sort of red, hallucinogenic gas seems to be the main catalyst for weird visions and trippy missions, given what little gameplay I was shown.

Once that story’s 11 standard missions are completed, however, a new “Endgame” experience will unlock, featuring an open-world Avalon map for up to 32 players to explore and fight enemies in. Gamers will be able to fly into the battle royale map-like zone to fight AI soldiers and robots, complete missions, and rank up their operators with new abilities and a level-up system called Combat Rating.

Increasing your Combat Rating (max level 60) will give players access to higher-tier areas of the map, but here’s the catch: if you die, you wipe and have to start all over again, similar to games like Modern Warfare II’s DMZ mode or Escape From Tarkov. That’s right, wiping as a squad will reset your progress for that operator.

Each individual, playable operator also has their own abilities and skill specializations that can be unlocked and leveled up, such as a Grapple Hook, Mega Jump, or Drone Charmer that spawns quad-rotor drones to take down enemies.

Treyarch says that Endgame will be the “final proving ground where all of your campaign progress is tested in a new environment.” Progress is tied to “shutting down Guild activities” as you “move into the hardest regions.”

A lot about Endgame is still being kept secret for now, but players looking to expand their BO7 experience and unlock everything it has to offer may find some real fun in this new co-op experience to play alongside multiplayer and Zombies modes.

Diablo IV has been demonically chugging along since the release of the major Vessel of Hatred expansion last fall. The seasonal model usually brings temporary gameplay updates and storylines, but when Season 9 hits on July 1, it will add a couple of useful permanent changes. First, console players are getting support for mouse and keyboard controls. Second, there will be new additions to Nightmare Dungeons.

The endgame of Diablo IV involves a lot of grinding Nightmare Dungeons, so even with a healthy dose of procedural generation, the landscape of those challenges starts to feel overly familiar. Season 9 will add some new wrinkles to the tile sets. Horadric Strongrooms are micro-dungeons within the Nightmare Dungeon that offer big potential rewards as well as a buff for the remainder of the main dungeon. Escalating Nightmares are a trio of dungeons in increasing challenges, and when tackled at Torment difficulty, they conclude with a riff on the Astaroth boss fight.

It’ll be a while yet before the developers bring another expansion on the scale of Vessel of Hatred, but Blizzard has been providing new twists on the game each season for the players who log hundreds of hours in Diablo IV. The Season 9 permanent additions, which also include some brand new dungeon affixes, could help keep things challenging and interesting for the game’s hardcore fans.

Dune: Awakening studio is adding “partial warfare” endgame zones to address PvE player woes

To date, my Dune: Awakening experience has largely consisted of building an ungainly box and hanging from the ceiling in my underwear. But more driven players have already barrelled their way to the endgame, where its “extremely competitive” PvP focus has become something of a concern for PvE players. Enter developer Funcom, which reckons it might have found a solution.


Dune: Awakening’s endgame, if you’re unfamiliar, is focused on the Deep Desert. This vast, ever-shifting landscape is where players can venture in search of valuable resources and endgame gear as they make a grasp for factional supremacy, and one that’s reset every week by Coriolis storms. It’s also PvP-focused – a design decision Funcom has previously stood firm on, even as Ornithopters rained down from above. Now, though, Dune: Awakening creative director Joel Bylos has admitted the system isn’t quite working in the way the team had hoped.


“We still believe in the core concept of the Deep Desert,” he explained in a newly shared developer blog. “The tension of heading out there, head on a swivel, eyes peeled for foes as you enter the most dangerous part of the most dangerous planet in the universe. Our wish was that players would embrace this loop, forming guilds to work together to overcome the bleakness of the Deep Desert… The reality is that players are reporting being cut out of the endgame due to the extremely competitive nature of the Deep Desert.

This runs counter to the team’s vision, according to Bylos. “We want PvE players to be able to play the endgame and have access to the content of the endgame. Our goal is not to force PvE players to interact with a PvP system that they may have no interest in.”


As such, Funcom is introducing Partial Warfare (PvE) zones to the Deep Desert where players can explore testing stations and harvest T6 resources without being forced into conflict with other players. However, Landsraad control points, shipwrecks and the largest spice fields will remain War of Assassins (PvP) flagged. “The deepest parts of the Deep Desert,” Bylos continued, “will remain as they currently are – high reward, high risk areas.”


“The beauty of the Deep Desert design with weekly resets and renewals,” he added, “is that we can iterate and experiment with different layouts and setups to really help us tune it. As we make changes we will send out surveys to help us capture your thoughts.”


On top of that, Bylos acknowledged a variety of issues impacting PvP. Some of these relate to Ornithopters, which have dominated Dune: Awakening’s endgame ever since players realised they could drop them on other people’s heads. Scout Ornithopters will see a range of changes, which Funcom details in its blog, as will other mechanics the studio believes are being “abused”, including respawn timers, vehicle storage tools, and hand scanners.


“The intended dynamic of Deep Desert PvP” Bylos noted, “is that – unless you really mess up – you always have the option to retreat in good order with whatever you’ve managed to claim so far. If you’re smart and vigilant, you never have to fight if you don’t want to. If you run, you’ll have to call a halt to whatever task you were pursuing, but that should always be a choice. PvP should happen when both parties decide they want to fight over a location.”


And finally, Bylos had a few words to say on Dune: Awakening’s Landsraad design, admitting this endgame “framework” still has a number of “key flaws”. Funcom is currently looking at addressing some of these, including the “inability to hand in items after a square is completed and the rapidity at which some squares are turned in”, alongside stockpiling, which is currently being unintentionally rewarded. Additionally, the studio will be introducing Landsraad “micro rewards” for solo/small group players.


“Once a live game launches, it becomes a collaborative effort between the developers and the players to make it something amazing,” Bylos concluded. “We appreciate your feedback on what we hope is the beginning of a long journey together. Bear with us – our intention is to be clear and open in our communications and to make Dune: Awakening a game that everybody can enjoy.” And by all accounts, Dune: Awakening – which we gave four stars in our review – currently has a lot of everybodys, what with having already hurtled passed 1m sales.

Dune: Awakening’s Deep Desert is getting “partial warfare” PvE areas so you can gather endgame resources without being PvPed to death

Good news if you’ve been a bit frustrated with how Dune: Awakening handles PvE and PvP, specifically in terms of its treacherous Deep Desert. The game’s creative director Joel Bylos has announced some changes coming in response to player feedback on both those and the Landsraad.

Basically, it looks like Funcom have switched up their plans to take the concerns folks have cited into account, aiming for a nice compromise between the original ideas and the practicalities of what’s been happening since the game dropped in full.

In a lengthy letter to DA players, Bylos wrote that while the devs still believe their core concept of the Deep Desert as a dangerous, constantly changing place you go to get the rarest stuff, they’re not aiming to force PvE enjoyers to engage with PvP just to get the good stuff.

So, to ensure those folks don’t get locked out of the endgame, the director revealed that “starting soon, some areas of the Deep Desert will now be flagged as ‘Partial Warfare (PvE)’ areas where players will be able to explore testing stations and harvest T6 resources without the threat of conflict they may not want”. The likes of “Landsraad control points, shipwrecks and the largest spice fields” will stay as PvP areas, to preserve the biggest rewards coming with the biggest risk.

We’ve been listening.

The Deep Desert is evolving. PvE players will have more space to explore and progress without unwanted conflict. The Landsraad is getting more variety, better pacing, and stronger rewards.

Speaking of PvP, Bylos wrote that the devs are “planning to make more changes to the Deep Desert to accommodate ground battles and reinforce the use of player builds”, outlining some already incoming scout ornithopter tweaks designed to help ensure air superiority isn’t the be all and end all. There’ll also be “additional changes to mechanics like respawn timers, vehicle storage tools, hand scanners, and other mechanics that we see being abused in the Deep Desert”.

Meanwhile, Funcom are aiming to address some “key flaws” in the Landsraad that folks have cited. These include problems with tasks being turned in very quickly, and folks being able to do nothing with them once they’re completed. “Stockpiling is currently rewarded, but that is not our intention for this system, and we will make some changes to address it as best we can,” the director wrote, adding that the system will also be “updated to provide micro rewards for solo/small group players”.

It’s nice to see the devs finding a way to balance their vision for DA with making the changes folks want. Judging by the socials, the worm lovers who’ve been doin’ the Dune are glad to see these steps are being taken, even if there’s no concrete timeline on a lot of them at this point.

Time must fly when you’re having fun. Or at least when you’re defending Super Earth from a huge Illuminate invasio. Helldivers 2’s latest major order is the “final phase” of the battle for the divers’ home planet that’s been raging since the Heart of Democracy update dropped on May 20.

I must admit, I thought the Galactic War twist that’s brought the biggest number of Helldivers back to the game of any update it’s gotten so far would last a bit longer than three MOs. Then again, this is Helldivers 2 – the war ain’t anywhere close to over while there are still troops on the march and enemies to surf on.

First of all, the last major order, which expired earlier today, was a proper heartbreaker. After casually killing 2.5 billion Illuminate in the first stage of Super Earth’s defense, players weren’t quite able to successfully extract from missions against the Illuminate 20 million times. They got damn close, though.

So, with that, while the divers have worn the Illuminate fleet’s strength down to an estimated “24% of its original operating power”, only four of Super Earth’s seven Mega Cities are left standing. Yep, two more have joined the brilliantly-named Eagleopolis as smouldering wrecks.

Cue Arrowhead’s latest order, which declares the third phase of Super Earth’s defense to be the final one. “High Command anticipates an all-out assault to take the final four Mega Cities,” the studio wrote, “The Illuminate have spent a century preparing for this invasion; they will hold back nothing. What has come before was the preamble; this is the endgame…The Helldivers have their orders: HOLD Super Earth.”

MAJOR ORDER: The Battle for Super Earth enters its final phase. The survival of Freedom hangs in the balance.

In order to do that, players’ll need to dig in on Super Earth against the squids, while also scrapping 200 million Automatons so they can bring the Democracy Space Station back online to aid that first bit. As of writing, nearly 98 million bots have already been bashed in since the order debuted this morning.

Folks are seemingly going all out, no doubt buoyed by the fact today’s little Helldivers 2 patch – 01.003.003 – made a very popular change to the Reinforced Epaulettes passive that comes with the armour sets from the recently deployed Masters of Ceremony Warbond. As well as making your limbs less likely to snap like twigs, you’ll now be able to reload your primary weapon 30% faster and do 50% more melee damage when rocking the Parade Commander and Honorary Guard sets.

Right on schedule, Blizzard delivered a long and detailed livestream covering Diablo 4’s upcoming patch 2.3.0 PTR (Public Test Realm). The developer revealed when the PTR will be going online, and what it’s actually going to include.

The PTR will, as previously revealed, only be available on PC through Battlenet. It will go live next week, on Tuesday, May 27, ending one week later on June 3.

As you may recall from the Diablo 4 roadmap, Season 9 is titled Sins of the Horadrim. The structure of the next season will be similar to recent ones: there’s going to be a new activity or two, with the new gameplay revolving mainly around powers you can acquire as you play said activities.

For Sins of the Horadrim, the new endgame activity is called Escalating Nightmares (previously Dungeon Escalation), and the powers will be Horadric Spellcraft. Astaroth will also return as part of the season.

The highlight of the new season is the ability to create Horadric Spells, a new system that relies on three elements to function: Catalysts, Infusions, and Arcana. Catalysts are the base, unmodified powers, which you can then alter with Infusions. This changes the elemental damage type of the spell, but you can also change the baseline power of it using Arcana.

The system, in essence, is a refresh of Season 7’s Witchcraft Powers, and is similar to Season 8’s Boss Powers in the way it works, too.

Something else being introduced with Sins of the Horadrim is Horadric Strongrooms. These are micro-dungeons that can be found within larger Nightmare Dungeons. Your goal is to claim some lost Horadric knowledge within, and fight your way out in time, as a timer kicks in after you trigger a Strongroom.

Doing so will earn you Horadric Attunement, which can later be exchanged for rewards. The chances of Horadric Strongrooms spawning increase the higher your Torment level, but you can also use Horadric Phials (a new seasonal currency) to increase your chance of finding them further. Some Nightmare Dungeon Sigils will also guarantee a Horadric Strongroom can be found within.

Horadric Strongrooms follow a similar dungeon design where you get to choose what sort of challenge you want to take on by interacting with one of the different Horadric Pillars. Once the ritual is performed and the pillar is satiated, you’ll get Horadric Attunement. At the end of it, there’s a boss you’ll need to fight to complete the run. Before you leave, you’ll get to use your Horadric Attunement to acquire a Horadric cache.

The big new activity in Season 9 is Escalating Nightmares, which is a fancy name for a new chain of three Nightmare Dungeons, with nightmares escalating as you go through each. The main hook here is that each dungeon’s affixes stack with the next one, meaning the third in the chain will have affixes from all three. If you manage to go through all three, you’ll get to fight an Exalted version of Astaroth.

Triggering an instance of Escalating Nightmare requires an Escalation Sigil, which can be found in Horadric caches from the aforementioned Strongrooms (starting from Torment 1). The Astaroth fight itself is one of the most impressive and memorable fights from Diablo 4’s campaign, and players have been asking Blizzard since launch to bring it into the endgame.

This version has something of a mechanical twist, too. Astaroth will jump off his mount, essentially forcing you to fight both him and Amalgam. This isn’t just a visual trick, either, because slaying Amalgam before Astaroth sends the hound into a resurrection state that will put it back in the fight after some time.

As you might have guessed, there’s a major focus on dungeons in Season 9. Blizzard is turning its gaze to dungeons across both the Seasonal, and Eternal Realms. This will encompass a few tweaks, as well as some new quality of life changes. You’ll soon be able to activate a Nightmare Sigil from within the Nightmare Dungeon itself once it’s complete, meaning you’ll be able to re-run the same one without having to leave and re-enter to create a new instance. The pool of Nightmare Dungeon affixes is also being bolstered with a set of new ones, available across both realms.

Then there’s Horadric Jewels, which will be available in Torment 1 and beyond. Completing a Strongroom has a chance to spawn Horadric Tomes, which, when consumed, let you craft Horadric Jewels. These are effectively gems, just with some powerful effects that play nicely with your Horadric Spells. You’ll also need Horadric Phials and Gem Fragments to craft them, and they can only be socketed into Amulets and Rings.

Finally, Dune Awakening fans can expect a dedicated live stream to show off the real meat of any MMO: the endgame. This event will cover what players will be up to once they’ve progressed through the story and prepped themselves for the Deep Desert, something that has remained a bit mysterious upo until now.

The stream, which will go live on official Funcom platforms such as the studio’s Twitch page, is set to go live on May 28, at 12PM ET / 6PM CEST / 5PM GMT / 9AM PT. It’s titled the “Beyond the Beta: A Glimpse of Mid-to-Endgame livestream”, so expect to see a bit more than the usual early game zones we’ve seen plenty of courtesy of previews and the recent weekend beta.

Here’s what we know about the mid-to-end game so far. We know that players will have to pick between the Atredies and Harkkonen, and that player-run guilds can battle for faction supremacy via the Lansrad system. We know winning the Landsrad provides powerful buffs to the winning faction, and that the major push in the endgame is to win that every cycle. In terms of actual gameplay, players will be heading out into the Deep Desert, where they can harvest spice in vast open PvP regions of the world.

But here’s what we don’t know. We don’t really know what players will be using that spice for. One assumes to make loads of money, but what do you spend it on? Shiny gear, better vehicles for future spice runs, a cooler house one assumes, but what else? Will there be some typical live service weekly mission model, encouraging folks to engage with different parts of the game? What about unlockable customisation? How does one differentiate a fresh character who’s just made it to the end game, and a powerful spice baron with loads of dosh?

All this, hopefully, will be revealed in this upcoming live stream. It’s one worth tuning in to if you’re eager to check out Dune Awakening when it launches next month!
