Helldivers 2 Could Have Ended Up As A Free-To-Play Game

by admin September 27, 2025

Helldivers 2 was, at one point, going to be a free-to-play game that would have been “completely” different than what we got in 2024. And this pivot is part of the reason why Helldivers 2 has some nasty performance problems.

When Helldivers 2 launched on PS5 and PC early last year, it quickly became a massive hit for PlayStation and developers Arrowhead. And since then, the sci-fi co-op shooter has remained popular as more updates have expanded the game, adding new weapons, enemies, locations, and more. But in recent months, players have complained about performance issues and technical problems.  Arrowhead’s CEO, Shams Jorjani, isn’t shying away from these criticisms and is directly addressing them in the official Helldivers 2 Discord server. And it’s here that he also revealed that at one point in time, Helldivers 2 was a much smaller game that was planned to be free-to-play and not a paid experience.

On September 25, while talking to fans about Helldivers 2 and its ongoing performance issues on console and PC on Discord, Jorjani explained that the shooter had a lot of built-up “tech debt” from various pivots that happened during development.

“[Helldivers 2] started as a AA game,” said the CEO. “[It] then grew in scope, then pivoted to a launch title for PS5, then pivoted to F2P, then back to premium ( I might have the order messed up) – so the goal posts were moved a few times – so the foundations of this big tower were made for a little bungalow on the beach.”

As far as I know, this is the first time it’s been officially confirmed by anyone at Arrowhead publicly that Helldivers 2 was at one point planned to be free-to-play. It’s interesting to think about now, and according to Jorjani, that version of the game would have had a “completely different content pipeline” and would have likely been a very different game compared to what we actually got.

“I wasn’t with Arrowhead back then so I don’t know – but the model was always to give away as much nice stuff for free and monetize other things,” said Jorjani. “It would have been a completely different angle. It [would have] required a completely different content pipeline.”

Making all of these changes and pivots during development led to a lot of tech debt, which the CEO says is a big reason the game’s performance is “so-so.” But they are planning to improve things in the future, with the CEO telling fans in the Discord that improving the game is like cleaning out a garage.

“Tech debt is like a garage filled with stuff you just chucked in,” said the CEO. “We really need to put up shelves in the back to get organized.” This isn’t the first time he’s talked about the game’s tech debt causing issues. Earlier this month, he reiterated that Helldivers 2 wasn’t in a great place and that the team needed to get their “shit in order” and fix it.

‘Players ended up just shooting Doritos’: Battlefield 6 is toning down its aggressive ping ability after open beta feedback

by admin September 13, 2025

The Battlefield 6 beta felt like a throwback to an older era of Battlefield in all sorts of ways, but one of the big ones was its generous spotting mechanic: Slap that Q button in the general direction of a bad guy and their head got tagged with a scarlet “Dorito,” making them visible and vulnerable to the entire team.

The 3D spot is a staple of Battlefield that Battlefield Studios has no plans of abandoning again, but it agrees with players who thought spotting, and especially the Recon’s auto-spotting ability, was way too powerful in the open beta. In a recent interview with IGN, console combat designer Matthew Nickerson said changes are coming in the final game.

“We definitely reduced the range and overall reduced the power,” Nickerson said. “We found out a lot in open beta that it was obviously very strong, just like players said. Really, players ended up just shooting Doritos. Light environments, dark environments—they were just like, ‘Hey, aim at the Dorito. You’re going to hit something at the end of the day.’”

I wish that were hyperbole, but I’d guesstimate that a fourth of my kills in the open beta were enemies I never actually saw. It could hardly be helped: Those red diamonds shone clear as day through all the dust and smoke that filled the streets of Siege of Cairo, and if you didn’t take advantage of the intel, they surely would.

The planned changes will reduce the range and duration of pings, presumably meaning that you can’t just spam Q at a small black speck on a hill and conjure a Dorito. That said, I assume you can still mark locations with a non-tracking ping from a great distance, which theoretically accomplishes the same thing, but only your squad can see it.

“Again, we want the information. It’s important to ping players,” Nickerson added, “but it’s got to be an active part of Battlefield. It can’t just be a fire-and-forget sweep across the whole thing [and] everyone’s lit up. That was very apparent in open beta, so we’ve made some considerable changes to the system.”

You can read the IGN’s full interview with Nickerson and technical director Christian Buhl for more insights ahead of the Battlefield 6 launch, including the team’s reaction to leaks and updated stance on cosmetics.

The West Texas Measles Outbreak Has Ended

by admin August 19, 2025

A large measles outbreak in Texas that has affected 762 people has now ended, according to an announcement Monday by the Texas Department of State Health Services. The agency says it has been more than 42 days since a new case was reported in any of the counties that previously showed evidence of ongoing transmission.

The outbreak has contributed to the worst year for measles cases in the United States in more than 30 years. As of August 5, the most recent update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a total of 1,356 confirmed measles cases have been reported across the country this year. For comparison, there were just 285 measles cases in 2024.

The Texas outbreak began in January in a rural Mennonite community with low vaccination rates. More than two-thirds of the state’s reported cases were in children, and two children in Texas died of the virus. Both were unvaccinated and had no known underlying conditions. Over the course of the outbreak, a total of 99 people were hospitalized, representing 13 percent of cases.

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can temporarily weaken the immune system, leaving individuals vulnerable to secondary infections such as pneumonia. In rare cases, it can also lead to swelling of the brain and long-term neurological damage. It can also cause pregnancy complications, such as premature birth and babies with low birth weight. The best way to prevent the disease is the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. One dose of the vaccine is 93 percent effective against measles while two doses is 97 percent effective.

A measles outbreak is considered over after 42 days if no new cases are discovered because it is double the disease’s maximum incubation period—the longest time it can take between when a person is exposed to the virus and when they develop symptoms.

The CDC defines an outbreak as three or more related cases. The West Texas outbreak has been linked to cases in neighboring states, Mexico, and Canada.

While the Texas outbreak has ended, measles cases are still being reported elsewhere in the country. According to the CDC, 40 other states have reported cases, and a total of 32 US outbreaks have been reported in 2025, compared with 16 outbreaks in 2024.

The ongoing outbreaks put the country’s measles elimination status at risk. The designation means there is no ongoing domestic spread of measles for longer than 12 months. The US achieved that status in 2000 after years of increasing vaccination rates but almost lost it in 2019, when measles cases swept through undervaccinated Orthodox Jewish communities in New York for much of the year.

As vaccination rates continue to decline in the US, public health researchers warn that outbreaks of measles and other diseases are likely. One recent peer-reviewed paper found that at current state-level vaccination rates, measles could reestablish itself and become endemic again within the next two decades.
