EA Boss Thanks Employees For Making $55 Billion Private Equity Sale Possible

The $55 billion sale of Electronic Arts to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and a group of other private equity investors is a big deal. Some people are going to make a lot of money off it. Others may lose their jobs when the interest bill for the debt-financed portion of the leveraged buyout comes due. CEO Andrew Wilson, who will remain in charge of the Madden and Battlefield publisher even after the sale closes, is thanking his employees.

“This moment is a recognition of your creativity, your innovation, and your passion. You have built some of the world’s most iconic IP, created stories that have inspired global communities, and helped shape culture through interactive experiences,” he wrote in a companywide email to staff after the deal was announced on Monday, a copy of which was obtained by Kotaku. “Everything we have achieved–and everything that lies ahead–is because of you.”

EA stockholders, which would include Wilson, will receive $210 per share. The executive was granted $31 million in cash and stock awards for the company’s last fiscal year, up $5 million from the year prior, even as the company laid off rank-and-file employees and hit sales snags in EA Sports FC, Apex Legends, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The 25 percent premium on the company’s mid-August share price comes with a catch, however. A whopping $20 billion of the buyout comes from debt, the interest on which could exceed hundreds of millions of dollars annually, or the budget of multiple AAA blockbusters per year.

“We are entering a new era of opportunity,” Wilson wrote in his email to staff today. “This is one of the largest and most significant investments ever made in the entertainment industry. Our new partners bring deep experience across sports, gaming, and entertainment. They are committed with conviction to EA–they believe in our people, our leadership, and the long-term vision we are now building together.”

He continued,

EA instituted a return-to-office policy earlier this year which would require anyone living within 30 miles of an EA office to come in at least three days a week, while others not designated as remote would need to relocate. At the time, Wilson said the goal was to ignite the “kinetic energy that fuels creativity,” but some employees saw it as a way to incentivize more “voluntary” layoffs.

Alongside the likelihood of layoffs are questions about Saudi Arabia’s human rights record and the new ownership’s potential impact on creative freedom within the company and public messaging, including its annual Pride events across its various franchises, most notably The Sims. Wilson told staff EA’s “values” will remain unchanged, but didn’t lay out specifically what they are. The sale is set to close in mid-2026 pending shareholder and regulatory reviews.

US labor board drops allegation that Apple’s CEO violated employees’ rights

The National Labor Relations Board has withdrawn “many of the claims” it made against Apple in relation to cases brought in 2021 by former employees, according to Bloomberg. In particular, it dismissed an allegation that Apple CEO Tim Cook violated workers’ rights when he sent an all-staff email that year, which said “people who leak confidential information do not belong” in the company. Cook also said in the email that Apple was “doing everything in [its] power to identify those who leaked” information from an internal meeting the previous week, wherein management answered workers’ questions about pay equity and Texas’ anti-abortion law.

Apple didn’t “tolerate disclosures of confidential information, whether it’s product IP or the details of a confidential meeting,” Cook wrote at the time. The NLRB has now withdrawn some of the claims made in complaints by former employee Ashley Gjøvik, including that Apple told employees not to disclose company communications, and that it had suspended Gjøvik in retaliation and fired her unlawfully. But, not all of the allegations have been withdrawn. Apple settled a separate case with Gjøvik back in April, which she announced as a win for workers, as the settlement required Apple to revise rules around employee agreements and discussions of company information to clarify “that employees can talk about their pay, working conditions, and union organizing without retaliation,” and speak to the press, among other things.

In addition dropping its claim that Cook’s email violated workers’ rights, the labor board is also withdrawing its allegation that the firing of activist Janneke Parrish, one of the leaders of the #AppleToo movement, broke the law. It’s dismissing its previous allegations that Apple broke the law by imposing confidentiality rules and surveilling workers or making them think they were under surveillance, as well. After an investigation, NLRB previously came to the conclusion that Cook’s email and Apple’s overall behavior were “interfering with, restraining and coercing employees in the exercise of their rights.”

Bloomberg says this is just one instance of the NLRB being more friendly to companies under President Trump. It’s not quite clear if the labor board has withdrawn all allegations against Apple related to the complaint or just some of them, but we’ve reached out for clarification.

Correction, September 27, 2025, 6:42PM ET: This story incorrectly stated that the NLRB had withdrawn claims made against Apple in complaints filed by employees including Cher Scarlett. Scarlett’s charges against Apple, which relate to pay equity, suppression of wage discussions and constructive discharge, have not been withdrawn or dismissed.

IMPORTANT ADVISORY: New travel restriction for H-1B visa holders

Hi all–We have now reviewed the actual text of today’s Presidential Proclamation on H-1B visas, which you can find here: Restriction on Entry of Certain Nonimmigrant Workers – The White House.

Here’s what you need to know:

First, the proclamation is structured as a travel restriction. Beginning at 12:01 am eastern time on September 21, 2025 (so, 9:01 pm Pacific time tomorrow), individuals will not be able to enter/return to the U.S. in H-1B status unless their petition has an additional $100,000 payment associated with it.

What you need to do:

I will be updating this post later this evening with a form for people to fill out if they are currently outside the U.S. with an H-1B visa. We want to be able to follow up with each individual and provide support and guidance as they try to return within the next 28 hours.

The proclamation does not impact any other visa statuses.

There is other content about the pause in processing H-1B petitions for individuals who are outside the U.S. At this time, we do not interpret this to immediately impact extensions of H-1B status or changes of status to H-1B as long as you are currently in the U.S. We’ll share more about that later.

Crypto scammers tried to bribe X employees to reinstate suspended accounts

Crypto scammers and other malicious actors ran a bribery network that targeted employees of the social media network X, with the goal of having suspended accounts reinstated, X said Friday.

X noted that it was taking strong action after exposing “a bribery network” by platform users linked to crypto scams, and has instituted legal proceedings. This came after the social media platform owned by Elon Musk discovered that the scammers paid middlemen in attempts to influence employees to restore suspended accounts.

“X has exposed and is taking strong action against a bribery network targeting our platform. Suspended accounts involved in crypto scams and platform manipulation paid middlemen to attempt to bribe employees to reinstate their suspended accounts,” X posted via its Global Government Affairs account.

Scammers also target TikTok, YouTube

Per the platform, the bribery network consists of individuals who exploit social media sites such as Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Minecraft and Roblox to scam unsuspecting users. Perpetrators of these scams and manipulation, and who are linked to the bribery scheme, have connections to known criminal organizations like “The Com”, X noted.

“Legal proceedings are underway against participants, and we’re fully supporting law enforcement,” the platform added.

The Com is among several criminal organizations that target both crypto and mainstream companies or entities. The group, also known as “The Community” or “Hacker Com,” is largely an English-speaking outfit that has been linked to various cyberattacks and breaches, including hacks of the U.S. court system.

As well as crypto hacks, bad actors have used social media to promote fake projects.

In June this year, hackers compromised the X account of venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz to shill a fraudulent token. 

Similar breaches and fake token announcements have befallen X accounts of crypto platform ZKSync, Curve Finance and Jupiter. In April, crypto fraudsters seized control of a UK lawmaker’s X account and used it to promote a fake Solana token. “Breaking Bad” actor Dean Norris also said scammers took over his X account to promote an $8 million memecoin scam dubbed DEAN.

Over half of SMB employees say they’re considering quitting – so how can bosses keep their best talent?

More than half (54%) of British SMB employees have considered quitting over dissatisfaction with poor pay (33%), their work-life balance (29%, stressful environments (29%) and a lack of career progression opportunities (27%), new research has claimed.

The figures from Personio show how workers quitting has had a major impact on SMBs, with an average expense of £233-235k over the past year wasted on preventable turnover, mis-hires and skill mismatches.

Two in five (38%) HR leaders also agree that talent shortages are now their biggest risk, so is it time to rethink hiring?

SMBs are struggling to retain talent

The report found three-quarters (76%) of UK HR leaders now say they’re hiring for skills and aptitude rather than degrees, with two-thirds (67%) anticipating a rise in skill-based hiring over the next year.

Workers are clearly on-board with this, with 73% wanting employers to prioritize transferable skills allowing them access to new opportunities.

However, it’s become evident where companies are failing their workers – only 43% of employees feel they’re getting adequate AI training and support at work. A lack of it is said to make employees 22% more likely to leave.

With 49% of HR leaders now struggling to attract under-30 candidates, despite 74% agreeing that junior talent is important, it’s clear that companies need to offer more engaging learning opportunities to retain talent.

Personio’s report also reveals evolving post-pandemic trends, with 39% of younger workers saying they’d quit if asked to work from the office more than three days per week. Three in five (62%) agree that the traditional 9-5 is outdated, with 55% across all ages noting better performance when choosing their own hours.

Personio Chief People Officer Lenke Taylor summarized some of the changes companies can make to put them at an advantage: “Investing in development, trusting employees to work flexibly, and hiring for potential – not just on their credentials.”

Gig economy platform Fiverr is laying off 250 employees as it pivots to being an “AI-first company,” CEO Micha Kaufman shared in an essay on X. The move affects around 30 percent of the company’s staff, The Register writes, and it’s not uncommon among tech companies in 2025. Duolingo announced similar plans to become “AI-first” in April.

Kaufman describes this process as returning to “startup mode” and writes that his ultimate goal is to turn Fiverr into “an AI-first company that’s leaner, faster, with a modern AI-focused tech infrastructure, a smaller team, each with substantially greater productivity, and far fewer management layers.” Part of the justification Kaufman offers for why Fiverr doesn’t “need as many people to operate the existing business” is that the company has already integrated AI into its customer support and fraud detection programs.

The first sign that Fiverr might justify layoffs with AI came when Kaufman was interviewed by CBS News in May 2025 about the danger the technology posed to employees. Kaufman specifically advised employees to “automate 100 percent” of what they do with AI, while also claiming that wouldn’t make them replaceable because they were still capable of “non-linear thinking” and “judgement calls.” That advice doesn’t seem like it was ultimately helpful for Fiverr’s own employees.

The company’s cuts affect fewer people than a larger firm like Workday, who announced plans to eliminate 1,750 roles in February 2025. Regardless of the size of the company or its level of investment in AI, though, layoffs have the same effect: More work has to be done by fewer people.

Elon Musk is trying to silence Microsoft employees who criticize Charlie Kirk

Elon Musk is pressing Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to look into Blizzard employees who criticized Charlie Kirk after his death. Musk’s post quotes an X thread listing names and screenshots of the developers.

Musk’s direct question to Nadella follows a broader censorship crackdown from Republicans targeting individuals celebrating Kirk’s death or criticizing him. Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA) said he would use “Congressional authority and every influence with big tech platforms to mandate immediate ban for life of every post or commenter that belittled the assassination of Charlie Kirk.”

Former Blizzard developer Mark Kern, who goes by “Grummz” online and frequently posts about right-wing issues on X, quoted the original thread, claiming that the screenshotted posts showed Blizzard employees “trashing” Kirk. Musk then quoted the post himself with his question to Nadella.

“We’re aware of the views expressed by a small subset of our employees regarding recent events,” Microsoft said in a post on X. The post is not a reply to Musk but was shared on its main @Microsoft page. “We take matters like this very seriously and we are currently reviewing each individual situation. Comments celebrating violence against anyone are unacceptable and do not align with our values.” (The screenshots in the thread shared by Musk do not celebrate the shooting against Kirk.) Nadella has not replied to Musk publicly as of this writing.

Microsoft fires two more employees for participating in Palestine protests on campus

Microsoft has fired two more employees who participated in recent protests against the company’s contracts with the Israeli military and government. The two employees, Nisreen Jaradat and Julius Shan, were fired “in connection” with demonstrations that saw protesters set up encampments at Microsoft’s headquarters, according to Hossam Nasr, an organizer with the No Azure for Apartheid group.

Two other Microsoft employees were fired last night for their involvement with a protest that saw members of the group gain access to a company building and live stream themselves inside the office of Microsoft president Brad Smith. Jaradat had previously sent a mass email around Microsoft saying she was “fed up” with the company’s treatment of her as a Palestinian worker, bypassing the company’s restrictions on language around Palestine and Gaza internally in order to do so.

The No Azure for Apartheid group has been taking public actions against Microsoft throughout the year. The group interrupted Microsoft executives during live streamed presentations on multiple occasions this spring. More recently, the group attempted to occupy a plaza on Microsoft’s headquarters. After being removed, they returned the next day with tents and tables and poured red paint across a Microsoft sign; 18 people were arrested.

Protesters returned again on Tuesday for the demonstration in Smith’s office. Afterward, Smith held a press conference saying that Microsoft is “working every day” to investigate potential misuse of Azure in Israel. But he said the protesters’ actions were “not ok.”

Microsoft declined to provide an attributable statement to The Verge.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot summoned to French Court in relation to previous harassment trial against former employees

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot will appear in court in October in relation to the sexual harassment allegations that emerged back in 2020 against a number of employees.


Back in June, three former senior Ubisoft employees received suspended prison sentences and fines after being found guilty of harassment. All three employees left the company in 2020 as part of a wave of resignations and dismissals.


However, as reported by French outlet BFM TV, a subpoena has been issued against Guillemot in relation to this case, meaning he’ll have to appear before the Bobigny court (Seine-Saint-Denis) on 1st October.


The summons for Guillemot was filed by the Solidaires Informatiques union and four individuals, “the same civil parties” as in the previous trial resolved in June.


Following an investigation by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, no criminal proceedings will be held against Ubisoft or its management, which was confirmed during the closing arguments at the hearing in June.


“Our top priority is to ensure the absolute protection of the physical and moral integrity of its employees, through a policy of prevention and zero tolerance with regard to sexual or moral harassment, sexist behavior, assault, insult, or discrimination of any kind,” said Cecile Russeil, executive vice president of Ubisoft.


A union representative from Solidaires Informatiques has confirmed the summons was sent last month, but Guillemot was absent and his family refused to take his place. HR director Marie Derain and Ubisoft as a legal entity have also been summoned.


In 2020, following reports of harassment at the studio, Guillemot was asked how much he knew of the issues taking place. “It has now become clear that certain individuals betrayed the trust I placed in them and did not live up to Ubisoft’s shared values,” he said. “I have never compromised on my core values and ethics and never will. I will continue to run and transform Ubisoft to face today’s and tomorrow’s challenges.”

Pay rises, AI regulation, and layoff protection: what Activision Blizzard’s newly unionised employees want from Microsoft

Last week, Activision Blizzard’s Story and Franchise Development team (SFD) announced to the world it had unionised alongside the Communications Workers of America (CWA). As of writing, a neutrality agreement is in place while negotiations for a union contract are in the works.

It is not the first time the push for unionisation has surged at Activision Blizzard. Three months ago the Overwatch team unionised, 500 staff from the World of Warcraft team unionised last year, and Raven Software recently ratified its first union contract.

But as yet another wave of layoffs have been made at the company as part of Microsoft’s massive cuts across its gaming studios, this push for employee representation appears more necessary than ever.

To find out more about this next stage in Blizzard’s unionisation efforts, as well as what those at the SFD department want, I talked to two recently unionised Blizzard employees about what’s next for the team going forward.

“The industry has had a lot of instability over the last few years, studios have been hit with layoffs, closures, game cancellations. I feel like it’s the most profitable entertainment sector in the world, and the people who work in it should have a piece of that and some stability to their working conditions.”

That was Alison Venato, video editor on the SFD team and one of many people responsible for Activision Blizzard’s incredibly popular cinematics across Overwatch and Diablo. The team and her have found themselves at the centre of a seemingly ever-shifting company in recent years, where it has proven hard to find stability.

“There’s been a lot of leadership changes over the past few years,” states Veneto, “and we feel like getting a union contract will give us some stability no matter what shake-ups happen at the company. We’ve had others that have unionised on the Warcraft and Overwatch teams, and we’ve had a wave of layoffs hit us since the Microsoft acquisition.

“We understand companies need to make money, but we were bought in the largest tech acquisition of all time, so obviously we have value. Our union can work with the leadership to create a situation that’s beneficial to everyone.”

Sammi Kay, associate producer at Blizzard SFD, shares Venato’s desire to protect the developer’s ability to create the excellent work, without fear of reprisal from an industry disconnected from the realities of modern day video game development

“The industry has been expanding quite rapidly, especially since the pandemic when everyone was playing video games – myself included,” she said. “There’s a disconnect between what the companies and leadership are expecting from the industry and the workers who are developing that content.”

Kay elaborates on the feeling of the developers on the ground at Blizzard: “Everyone at Blizzard who has had a long tenure here enjoys the team, and there’s this sentiment that Blizzard is a special place. Things have changed due to many factors, including the pandemic, and the age of Blizzard as a company and it evolving, including with the acquisition by Microsoft. We’re unionising because we’re attached to how special Blizzard is […] We want to protect what we have and make it better.”

So what do the folks at the SFD department want? Many concerns shared by those recently unionised at Blizzard are similar to those expressed elsewhere in the industry. Namely the issues of pay, AI regulation, and layoff protections.

“Everyone is talking about the same issues,” expressed Veneto. “Pay is always an issue – we live in Irvine which is always expensive. Layoff protections are important given the waves of layoffs [we’ve seen]. Work from home policies are very important to people, and AI obviously is having a huge impact. Plus, we’ve had things that were outsourced that we’d rather have in-house.

Then there’s the “big issue” of transparency, a key demand for those who feel ambushed by years of sudden changes. “A lot of decisions are made about pay and promotions that we have no insight into. So just having some more information there is key. For me and other people in SFD we’re all doing creative work, and a lot of these problems make it hard to be creative. A more stable environment where we have a contract that allows us to do this would be great […] I want to work with the best people on the best work.”

As for Kay, while they are hesitant to speak on behalf of the whole department, AI regulation and pay are at the top of their list: “For me I would hope for better pay rises that keep pace or ahead of inflation,” they said. “More considerations with the use of AI, what that means as a tool for us at SFD and its implications moving forward. I think there’s very specific discussions on that for those in SFD in particular that should happen. I think it would be prudent to negotiate what layoff protections look like as well as severance packages.”

However, given Kay’s background in film and TV prior to Blizzard, they’re keen to avoid the temp-worker-focused dynamic found in other entertainment industries. “Having gone from contract work to full time was wonderful, and I want that opportunity to be available for more people,” they said. “From discussions I’ve had, there’s movement towards more contract roles being the norm, and that’s not in the best interest of Blizzard and its employees.”

Ultimately it’s a big win for the SFD team, and another blow landed in the ongoing fight for unionisation in the video game industry. With layoffs and closures happening at an alarming rate, one can only hope negotiations go well for all involved.

So how good a shot does the SFD department have at getting what they want, and what’s the deal with what certainly feels like a growing push for unionisation in the video game industry? To find more, I spoke to Scott Alsworth from the UK’s IWGB Union.

He credits the increase in unionisation efforts to several factors: technological displacement (especially poignant with the push for AI), a greater number of working class people joining the video game industry who bring a greater awareness of unionisation, and a response to the state of the industry as a whole.

“People are angry,” said Alsworth “The feeling in the industry is one of frustration. The biggest factor to the growth in unionisation is a widespread response to mass layoffs across the industry. Everybody knows someone who has been impacted, and people see unions as insurance and a way to help them keep their job, or at least a way to get extra help if they’re made redundant.

“It’s a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy,” he continued “Once unions are there people start joining and you gain momentum. When I’m talking to people about joining a union there are two reasons: the first a basic self preservation, what a union can do for me. The second is a desire to see the industry change, not just for themselves, but for workers everywhere.”

So what sort of protections can be gained? It depends on whether or not the union is recognised by the company in question. But even before any new contract is signed, the SFD department forming a union provides valuable resources.

“In the case of a large-scale layoff, what we can do is make sure the studio is doing things by the book,” said Alsworth “You’d be surprised how many studios cut corners and don’t do things like they’re supposed to do. At IWGB we have a great legal team, and that’s a great resource for us. I can safely say that in a number of cases, things like labour laws haven’t been adhered to. Once we raise that with our legal team, the studio gets spooked and you start to see concessions.”

Then of course as a collective the union has have options like strike action which becomes feasible to organise while unionised, better access to information and council in regard to contracts and an individual’s rights as a worker, and so on. Even as negotiations are in their early stages, the Blizzard SFD department has gained a few tools for its tool belt.

So the decision to unionise is a great first step for those at Activision Blizzard seeking better working conditions. Getting a proper contract in place, getting recognition from the company and solidifying a place within the legendary developer will surely be a hard and arduous process.
