‘Andor’ Writer Dan Gilroy Knows Why You’re Thinking About the Show This Week (and It’s Not the Emmys)

by admin September 19, 2025

Though we here at io9 would have preferred Andor win all the Emmys, the Disney+ Star Wars show did pick up a few notable trophies, including Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. Dan Gilroy, brother of Andor creator Tony Gilroy, won the honor for season two’s ninth episode, “Welcome to the Rebellion.” You know, the one where Mon Mothma makes her ferocious speech condemning genocide and monstrous leaders from the senate floor.

While remarking on how unfortunately relevant the story of Andor ended up being isn’t new—Tony Gilroy has certainly spoken about it—the themes of the show have become even more potent in the wake of ABC’s suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! after the talk show host’s comments on the death of Charlie Kirk.

Yesterday, creatives and subscribers called for a boycott of Disney, ABC’s parent company and also the corporate parent of Star Wars. Today, Dan Gilroy published an op-ed in Deadline with a “Welcome to the Rebellion”-style wake-up call.

“As one of the writers on the Disney+ drama Andor, we spent six years thinking about a fascist takeover of a galaxy far, far away,” it begins.

“Six years thinking about ordinary beings as an authoritarian regime comes in for the kill. Many people saw parallels between Andor and the real world. I see them as well, particularly in the events of the last week.”

The essay goes on to condemn Disney’s decision to suspend Kimmel, noting, “I deeply disagree but acknowledge it was a difficult decision.”

Gilroy goes on to address others in the entertainment industry, warning Hollywood it cannot accept this turn of events in our “brave new Trumpian world,” as he puts it, because it’s poised to get worse: “The first thing Putin did after taking power was silence shows that criticized him. Artists are censored first because they fear us most.”

Gilroy finishes by encouraging action. “Their goal is to instill fear, to make you feel helpless, hopeless, to break you down,” he writes. “Don’t let them. Educate yourself. Organize. Speak truth to authority. Because the story’s not written—the pen is in your hand.”

Read the full essay at Deadline; if you haven’t cancelled Disney+, you can still watch Andor there.

Emmys 2025 shocks, surprises & snubs

by admin September 15, 2025

The Emmys 2025 have been handed out, meaning it’s time to analyse the biggest shocks and surprises, including the stars and shows that were snubbed.

The Studio and Adolescence were the big winners at the 2025 Emmys, taking home six and four awards respectively.

The Pitt wasn’t far behind with three Emmys, while our favorite show of 2025 so far – Severance – managed two.

We’re already listed the 2025 Emmys winners and written about nomination snubs, while below are a few more shocks from the big night.

The Bear won nothing

FX/Hulu

The Bear is a weird one at the Emmys, as every year the show gets nominated in the comedy category, and every year commentators question whether it would be better suited to drama.

We loved Season 3, writing in our Bear review that “it’s another delicious serving of emotional depth and culinary drama. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll have heart palpitations… and you’ll be left hungry for more.”

But Emmys voters thought differently, with The Bear departing empty-handed.

Kathy Bates in Matlock lost to Britt Lower in Severance

Apple TV+

Kathy Bates was red-hot favorite for ‘Actress in a Drama’ thanks to her performance in the acclaimed Matlock reboot. That’s because as well as being terrific in the show, many felt is was “her time,” with the Guardian writing:

“The lead actress race is all about narrative. At 77, Kathy Bates is the oldest person to be nominated for a lead actress Emmy for Matlock; she put off retirement to star as a late-in-life lawyer motivated by the opioid death of her daughter.”

But Bates lost to Britt Lower, for her undeniably brilliant work in Severance, though maybe she had an advantage due her two performances, as Helena Egan and Helly R.

The White Lotus snubbed

HBO

The White Lotus was arguably the most talked-about TV show of 2025, due to the quality of the writing, acting, and directing onscreen, as well as some inter-cast drama behind-the scenes.

But Season 3 won nothing at the 2025 Emmys, with The Pitt defeating Lotus in the ‘Best Drama Series’ category.

But when it comes to acting, it might have been a case of the White Lotus women cancelling each other out, with Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, Natasha Rothwell, and Aimee Lou Wood all up for the same supporting actress award, but losing out to The Pitt’s Katherine LaNasa.

Tramell Tillman made history

Apple TV+

It isn’t a shock that Tramell Tillman won in this category, though the competition was stiff, thanks to the likes of Walton Goggins, Jason Isaacs, and Sam Rockwell in The White Lotus, as well as his own Severance co-stars Zach Cherry and John Turturro.

Rather, the shocking thing about this victory was the fact that Tillman was the first Black man to win in that category in the ceremony’s 77 year history.

When speaking to Variety about that prospect in last month, Tillman said: “Do I feel a weight? No. I feel honored to join the legacy of these incredible storytellers. I’m ambitious and would love an Emmy, but I’ve learned it’s not up to me.”

No one thanked Sal Saperstein

A running joke in ‘The Golden Globes’ episode of The Studio is winners thanking executive Sal Saperstein (Ike Barinholtz) much to the annoyance of his boss Matt Remick (Seth Rogen).

When the technical Emmys were handed out last week, the Studio winners jumped on that joke by paying tribute to the fictional characters, so there was an expectation that would continue last night.

It wasn’t to be, however, with Seth Rogen telling press: “It’s our own joke. It feels weird to reference your own joke in my opinion.” Making Sal Saperstein subject of the night’s most surprising snub.

The 2025 Emmys Are Tonight. Here’s Everything You Need To Know

by admin September 14, 2025

The biggest night in television is finally here.

The 77th edition of the annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be given out on Sunday night.

The best shows that came out sometime between June 2024 and May 2025 will be awarded across categories.

Apple TV+ is the big winner so far when it comes to nominations. Its fan-favorite show Severance picked up a total of 27 nominations. Lead actors Adam Scott and Britt Lower, who play Mark and Helly on the show, are both nominated for best actor nominations.

HBO’s The Batman spin-off show The Penguin came in second place with 24 nominations.

On the comedy side, critics believe Apple TV+’s take on Hollywood, The Studio, which got an impressive 23 nominations, will dominate the categories its nominated in — Hollywood loves Hollywood!

The Television Academy will also be honoring actor couple Ted Danson (famous for shows like Cheers and The Good Place) and Mary Steenburgen (who you might know from the movie Step Brothers) with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award. The award is given to honor the philanthropic efforts of media figures and has been previously awarded to the likes of Oprah Winfrey and George Clooney.

The Emmy Awards are broken into two weekends. Last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys focused on technical and guest acting categories. The Studio and The Penguin led that show with their wins.

The fan-favorite latest addition to the Star Wars series Andor won four Creative Arts Emmy Awards, including for outstanding fantasy/sci-fi costumes and visual effects. The show is up for an outstanding drama series award tonight but has tough competition against Severance and other big name nominees like HBO’s White Lotus and The Last of Us.

When is it?

The awards ceremony will start at 5 pm PT / 8 pm ET on Sunday night and go on for about three hours.

Where is it?

The ceremony is taking place at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. The Primetime Emmys have been held in that theater since 2008. It was formerly known as Nokia Theater and then Microsoft Theater until 2023 when NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service acquired naming rights.

How do I watch it?

CBS will be broadcasting the ceremony live. If you don’t have network television or access to streaming services with live TV like Hulu Live, you can stream the awards on the Paramount+ app. But there is a catch: you can only stream the show live if you’re subscribed to its premium tier, which costs $13 a month and comes with a free trial.

Who’s hosting it?

The show will be hosted by Grammy-nominated comedian Nate Bargatze. It will be Bargatze’s first time hosting the awards show. In 2024, he made $82.2 million from his comedy tour to become the year’s highest grossing stand-up comedian.

Who else is nominated?

Other genre shows, such as Black Mirror, Paradise, and What We Do in the Shadows are also up for awards tonight with at least one nomination each.

Several records were also made in the nominations. Harrison Ford got his first ever Emmy nomination for his work in Apple TV+’s Shrinking.

Kathy Bates became the oldest actress to be nominated for a best lead actress in a drama series award at 77 for her work in CBS’ Matlock.

The 15-year-old star of Netflix’s top-viewed series Adolescence, Owen Cooper, became the youngest person to be nominated for an outstanding supporting actor in a limited series award.
