Elden Ring Nightreign has a killer first day on Steam, but reviews are surprisingly mixed

by admin May 31, 2025

The moment many FromSoftware fans have been waiting for has arrived. Elden Ring Nightreign, the studio’s experimental, multiplayer-only off-shoot is here, having launched worldwide overnight.

Nightreign is a special release for the storied Japanese studio in a number of ways, and it’s clear players showed up for it, regardless of how unusual of a game it is from that team.

On Steam, where Elden Ring Nightreign currently tops Steam’s top sellers chart, the game has launched to a large and dedicated audience, causing it to land a spot in the platform’s highly-competitive top five most played games.

That’s the result of its concurrent player count, which is the metric the most played games list is based on. Nightreign peaked at 313,593 concurrent players very quickly after it went live (via SteamDB), and it has over 150,000 players in-game at the time of this writing.

This is a pretty respectable turnout for any game, and it certainly makes Nightreign one of 2025’s best-performing games on Steam. Considering the game’s launch time on Thursday/Friday, there’s every chance more players will jump in at the weekend, pushing these figures even higher.

Obviously, we have little insight into how well it may be doing on consoles, but it’s very likely as successful there, too. As big as this day-one turnout is, it’s nowhere close to Elden Ring’s all-time peak of 953,426 players. Nobody expected Nightreign to beat – or even match – that colossal peak concurrent, but it is worth keeping in mind nonetheless.

Even setting aside the game that spawned it, Nightreign’s Steam peak concurrent is already among FromSoftware’s highest, well above titles like Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and any of the Dark Souls games.

Watch on YouTube

Much like professional critics, however, player sentiment is also divided on the game. As things stand, 67% of 7,481 Steam user reviews are positive, which is why it’s currently sitting at a Mixed overall rating.

Believe it or not, Elden Ring itself started out pretty wobbly on the Steam review scale at its respective launch, too. Ironically, many of the same complaints about performance issues and stuttering that were common then have reemerged now. That said, Nightreign’s unique situation as a co-op-only game has created its own set of grievances, some of which have to do with the studio’s decisions surrounding the game and not necessarily its technical state.

Reviews will likely settle as the days go by and move that rating to Positive. Until then, if you’re one of the millions jumping into the not-Lands Between, our Elden Ring Nightreign guide is live and ever-growing. We recently updated it with new builds for Ironeye and Raider.

Elden Ring Nightreign update offers solo players a helping hand not even 24-hours after launch because cowards cried too loud

by admin May 31, 2025

Elden Ring Nightreign hasn’t even been out for 24 hours, and already the game has been made easier for solo players. Those tackling solo runs will get one free revive during the Nightlord fight that’s part of the run, and will get increased rune aquisition the entire time.

A solo run, which is already scaled so that bosses have less health and offers a purchasable revive before the Nightlord fight for a measly 10,000 runes, was added for those who enjoy the challenge of taking on a game intended for group play on their lonesome. Fair play, y’know. It’s not how I best enjoyed the game but godspeed captain, take the wheel. For those who were actually excited to take on the game this way with all its struggle and in the name of fufilment through overcoming adversity, however, their dreams have been hampered by the wails and moans of wittle babies who want the solo experience to be easier.

They want their warm bottle, a little bib, and for the process of actually overcoming the challenge present in Nightreign to be lowered so they don’t have to work as hard to succeed. Was I able to solo every boss during the review period? No. I did like four of ’em. Was I looking forward to improving and doing so over the next few weeks? Absolutely. This journey has been stolen from me and likeminded adults by the feeble among us.

“But Connor, what if these people are struggling to beat bosses on their own and need help?”, you may ask. Here’s a hot tip. Go and ask your dad if you can use the internet, shake the gent’s hand, then take the on the boss online. Once you’ve cracked that with the help of other people, and are better at the game, then try it solo. You’ll find that it’s easier than before. Wow! It’s almost as though that playing the game more and with other people (the way the game is intended to be played) helps make these challenges less daunting.

It’s almost as though that’s a major theme of the game itself. You are meant to ride a bike with your hands on the handle bars. You can ride without doing so, but it’s harder. If you try riding a bike without touching the handle bars and wipe out on the pavement, you don’t ask for stabilizers to be put on, right? You practice riding your bike normally until you can crack it.

The worst part isn’t even the revive – you can just take your hands off the controller on your first death and welcome the game over if you want a real “deathless run” – it’s the rune aquisition boost. In my opinion it taints the whole thing. There are relics that give rune aquisition boosts but you have to earn them. The game gets easier as you play, as in all games like this.

I do understand why this change has happened from From Software’s perspective – the company wants all the people playing it to have a good time and not bail out after a few too many frustrating losses. Totally get it. But why not leave it a week so the sickos can claim their laurels? Then, provide this olive branch for everyone else.

Maybe I’m an jaded 27 year old but I remember a From Software community that would cheer and pop bottles upon hearing that a new game was really hard as a solo player, and would smash their heads against it like rabid animals until they managed to beat it. These people still exist I’m sure, they are likely as disapointed as I am that the game has already had part of it neutered, but it’s too late now. At least with Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree regular players had a few days to soldier on before the early hours of it were made easier.

Whatever, enjoy your pram. Elden Ring Nightreign is out now, and is doing really well on Steam at the moment. So, there’s a solid chance a lot of you playing it right now are having a good time, which is swell.

Elden Ring Nightreign Hits 2 Million Players In Just One Day

by admin May 31, 2025

Elden Ring Nightreign hasn’t even been out for 24 hours, and it’s already putting up some impressive player count numbers. According to a new post on X by publisher Bandai Namco, 2 million players jumped into Nightreign on its first day, which is technically today, although the game launched for some yesterday, depending on region.

That’s an impressive feat for any game, but not all that surprising for a spin-off of the uber-popular Elden Ring, which surpassed 30 million copies shipped last month. Despite featuring “Elden Ring” in the title, Nightreign differs from its predecessor. Instead of a single-player action-RPG focused on exploration, mystery, and overcoming challenges, Nightreign is a three-player co-op roguelite spin on Elden Ring about min-maxing efficiency in each run.

It’s a great time, and you can read about why in Game Informer’s Elden Ring Nightreign review. After that, check out Game Informer’s beginner tips and tricks for Elden Ring Nightreign, and then read about how an Elden Ring live-action movie is in the works and is circling Heartstopper’s Kit Connor as the lead.

How to unlock and change skins in Elden Ring Nightreign

In Elden Ring Nightreign, you can equip skins on your Nightfarer classes, but the game doesn’t clearly show you the place to change or purchase new cosmetics. Therefore, it can be challenging for many players to customise their in-game appearance with the existing skins, and they may end up spending their in-game resources on other items.

Here is a complete breakdown of everything you need to know about the skins in Elden Ring Nightreign.

To unlock the skins in Elden Ring Nightreign, you need to start going to the Expeditions and take out the final bosses once the circle stops becoming small. On day three of the Tricephalos expedition, you should face the mighty Gladius, Beast of Night, and you can defeat him to get the Old Pocketwatch, which is necessary for unlocking the Duchess class.

After that, start another expedition called Gaping Jaw, where on the third day, you can again open the big door to face the Adel, Baron of Night. He is the second Night Lord that you will be facing chronologically, and once you defeat him, you should be transported back to the Roundtable Hold with your rewards. You should now also trigger a cutscene, where an NPC will come to you and talk about dresses. Once the cutscene ends, you should have successfully unlocked the skins for the Nightfarer that you’ve unlocked in the game.

Once you’ve unlocked the skins, make your way to the dresser from the Roundtable Hold by taking the left way toward the eastern side until you come across the room with the fireplace. You can also press M to open the map and click on the change garb option on the left to transport directly in front of the mirror near the fireplace. Now, you can interact with it to check out the skins for every character that you have in the game.

You need to spend a currency called Murk to purchase the skins. Currently, there are just two skins for each class, but the number could potentially increase with the game’s upcoming DLCs. After changing your attire using the dresser for the first time, you should get the Dresser achievement.

There are eight Nightfarers in Elden Ring Nightreign, including Duchess and Revenant, who require you to complete some quests to secure their services. Here is a look at all the cosmetics that you can obtain for free by simply playing the game and farming the currency:

If you want to play Elden Ring Nightreign in a duo, the Seamless Co-op mod is already out, dead simple to use, and it won’t mess up your vanilla save

by admin May 31, 2025

FromSoftware is apparently reserving the right to add an official two-player mode to Elden Ring Nightreign—right now you can only play solo or in a trio. But Yui, the modder behind the Seamless Co-op series of Souls multiplayer hacks, has already done it again with Elden Ring Nightreign a mere day after launch.

PCG senior editor Wes Fenlon and I hopped in for a round, and it works exactly like you hope it would—it’s even slightly more buttoned up than the already-great original Seamless Co-op, won’t mess up your game by drawing Easy Anticheat’s Eye of Sauron, and even opens up Nightreign for further modding.

To install Seamless Co-op, you just have to whack the files from Nexus Mods into your Elden Ring Nightreign/Game folder. It runs from its own .exe, does not interact with FromSoft’s official servers, and creates separate save files from the original game, keeping EAC out of things.

You may like

That does lead to a lone hitch for you to consider, though: Any progress you’ve made so far won’t carry into Seamless Co-op, and vice-versa. Wes and I had to chop through the tutorial Margit encounter again before queueing up. This seems to be the cost of doing business, but worth keeping in mind.

Otherwise, though, it runs exactly like the official game—you can even invite friends to group up through Steam still. It also worked perfectly in our run: No hitches, glitches, or connection issues to speak of. It just works. If you don’t mind the split progression, have a special Elden someone in mind to play the game with, and can’t stand a third wheel tagging along, this is the mod for you.

I thought the first Nightlord felt easier than I remembered, but that was just 30 hours of experience talking: Yui told us that she hadn’t touched difficulty balancing in any way for two-player. That may be the lone exculpatory factor in a modder whipping up a two-player mode so quickly when FromSoftware did not.

In FromSoft’s defense: It’s still clearly finding the balance for Nightreign’s solo mode, while Wes and I saw the potential for some lopsided, frustrating gameplay when one player goes down and the other has to revive them in a duo—you no longer have the sturdy tripod of a third player taking aggro. All the same, Yui’s work remains, as ever, incredibly impressive, and it’ll be interesting to see how Seamless Nightreign develops, especially if FromSoft ever comes up with its own two-player solution.

Elden Ring Nightreign Will Become Easier For Solo Players

by admin May 30, 2025

Image: FromSoftware / Kotaku

FromSoftware’s next big RPG, Elden Ring Nightreign, is out now on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. But you probably already know that, considering the game reached over 300,000 players on Steam alone. For those of you venturing forth into this new Souls-like RPG alone, I have good news: Things are going to get easier next week.

The Most Sought After Elden Ring Sword Has A Storied History

On May 30, FromSoftware posted an update on Twitter about Nightreign’s upcoming patch 1.02. The studio says the patch will be available next week and will include some fixes and tweaks. The big news is that solo players will now be able to revive once during a boss fight and will gain more runes, which should help lone wolves level up and farm faster.

Nightfarers, thank you for playing Elden Ring Nightreign. Next week, Patch 1.02 will be released and will include several bug fixes as well as improvements for solo expeditions. Further details will be provided next week. Thank you for your support.

  • The effect “Automatic Revival Upon Defeat”, which allows revival once per night boss battle, will be added to solo expeditions.
  • The amount of runes gained will be increased.

Elden Ring Nightreign, FromSoftware’s latest game, is a multiplayer-focused spin-off that is very different from the single-player (and brutal as heck) RPGs the studio has traditionally produced, like Dark Souls and Bloodborne. While it plays a lot like Elden Ring, it features a new multiplayer-focused, roguelike, battle royale-esque boss rush format.

As Kotaku’s own Ethan Gach mentioned in his impressions about the online RPG, playing Elden Ring Nightreign solo is not something most people will want to “actually bother with unless FromSoftware drastically nerfs the difficulty at some point.” And it looks like that’s happening next week. Good luck to all you lone warriors, and hopefully, this upcoming patch makes your lives a little bit easier.

Elden Ring Nightreign Old Pocketwatch, explained

by admin May 30, 2025

It’s always a pocketwatch.

Published: May 30, 2025 12:18 pm

Following in the footsteps of Elden Ring, Elden Ring: Nightreign has tons of cryptic items used to unlock different aspects of the experience, including brand-new playable characters. Early on, you’ll receive the Old Pocketwatch, and here is what you can do with it in Elden Ring Nightreign.

Where to find the Old Pocketwatch in Elden Ring Nightreign

The Old Pocketwatch is a guaranteed drop from Gladius, Beast of Night, who you will fight during the Tricephalos Expedition, the first major boss encounter in Elden Ring: Nightreign.

He’s dangerous and fuming all the time! Image via Bandai Namco

There is a minor chance of receiving the Old Pocketwatch after you die during the Tricephalos Expedition as well, but you must have reached Gladius, Beast of Night, at least once. I don’t think this is an ideal way to get this item, and you’re better off beating Gladius instead

The Old Pocketwatch is a relic that can be equipped by one of your Nightfarers and grants the following bonuses if equipped:

RelicBonusesOld PocketwatchFP Restoration upon Successive Attacks
Dexterity +3 Doesn’t look that old to me. Screenshot by Dot Esports

However, it has a more important use than just offering a few bonuses.

What to do with the Old Pocketwatch in Elden Ring Nightreign?

Once you have acquired the Old Pocketwatch, you can either choose to keep it for the minor bonuses or give it to the Priestess at the Roundtable Hold.

This will initiate a cutscene where the Priestess will remove her hood, and you’ll unlock the Duchess, one of the eight playable Nightfarers in Elden Ring: Nightreign.

It’s time to slay the Night Lord! Screenshot by Dot Esports

You still get to keep the relic even after giving it to her, and use it in the green relic slot if you want. Assuming you haven’t already unlocked everyone else, that just leaves the Revenant, who you can unlock early on as well.

So, my recommendation is to give the Old Pocketwatch to the Priestess as soon as you acquire it. There is no point keeping it around and having one of the best characters in the game remain locked.

Elden Ring Nightreign’s been out less than a day, and a Souls legend is already showing off a duos mod demo for it, because of course they are

by admin May 30, 2025

Boy, that escalated quickly. Elden Ring Nightreign, as I write this, has been out less than a day. So, of course someone’s already put out a video demonstrating a duos mod for it.

To be fair, I guess Nightreign’s devs had arguably thrown down the gauntlet to the FromSoft modding community when the game’s director admitted that duos play hadn’t been a big focus in development and would only potentially get some TLC further down the line.

Anyway, modder Yui – that’s the same person responsible for Elden Ring’s Seamless Co-op mod and its various siblings for other FromSoft games – is unsurprisingly the person who’s managed to whip this out in uber-quick fashion.

In the video below spotted by IGN, they demonstrate a mod that’d allow you to hop into a Nightreign session with just two players instead of the usual three or one plucky solo Soulser that’ll have a much easier time once the next patch drops.

Watch on YouTube

“As the modification runs without connecting to the matchmaking server, it is possible to use additional mods during gameplay,” Yui explained in the vid’s description, adding that they “Made it for fun.”

As of right now, they’ve not released this mod to the public meaning you can’t play it. I’d imagine if they do intend to put it out that it’s currently a work-in-progress that’ll need a lot of extra graft to fine-tune the likes of balancing – that being the main thing FromSoft’s had to work on in order to make sure the game works just as well for solo players as it does trios.

After all, more stabby blokes, more stabs inflicted on bosses, therefore bosses need to be able to take more stabs to not die too easily, and vice versa.

If you’re going HAM on Nightreign this weekend, make sure to check out our bunch of handy guides to help you get to grips with it, and our ranking of every Nightlord, The latter’s based on key factors like difficulty, spectacle, and how often they brush their teeth.

Elden Ring Nightreign Patch Coming Next Week To Make Solo Expeditions Easier

by admin May 30, 2025

Elden Ring Nightreign launched today and in less than 24 hours, the game already has 2 million players. While it is designed as a three-player co-op roguelite experience, you can also play Nightreign solo… but it’s really, really hard. Fortunately, From Software is listening to players and releasing a patch next week to make solo expeditions easier.

The studio announced this patch on the official Elden Ring X account, stating Patch 1.02 arrives next week and includes several bug fixes and improvements for solo expeditions. As for what to expect, From Software says the effect, “Automatic Revival Upon Defeat,” which allows revival once per night boss battle, will be added to solo expeditions, and the amount of runes gained will be increased.

This should make the entire experience easier for solo players, as increased runes will allow them to level up faster. And having the ability to revive once per night boss battle will give players more of a fighting chance in Nightreign’s various fights. From Software says further details about Patch 1.02 will be provided next week.

In the meantime, read Game Informer’s Elden Ring Nightreign review and then check out Game Informer’s beginner tips and tricks for Elden Ring Nightreign. After that, read about how an Elden Ring live-action movie is in the works and is circling Heartstopper’s Kit Connor as the lead.

Elden Ring Nightreign is getting another patch next week to improve solo play

by admin May 30, 2025

Elden Ring Nightreign will receive another patch next week to make improvements for solo players.

FromSoftware’s multiplayer spin-off has already received a day one patch that brought balance adjustments. And there’s more to come.

Next week, patch 1.02 will be released, adding an automatic revival effect once per Nightlord battle for solo expeditions. Further, the amount of runes acquired will be increased.

Elden Ring Nightreign For Dummies: Basics For EVERYTHING You Need to Know (But Were Afraid to Ask)Watch on YouTube

Nightreign released earlier today and has already seen strong numbers of concurrent players on Steam, although it’s received a Mixed reception due to players criticising the lack of duo option and in-game communication features.

Indeed, many players have criticised the studio – known for its single-player games – for creating a multiplayer game, although solo play is an option.

The following improvements for solo expeditions will be added to the game:
– The effect “Automatic Revival Upon Defeat”, which allows revival once per night boss battle, will be added to solo expeditions.
– The amount of runes gained will be increased.
Thank you for your support.

As I wrote earlier today, I would not recommend Nightreign as a solo game at this point as it’s clearly not the intended way to play.

However, it seems FromSoftware is aiming to respond to the current backlash to make solo play more feasible.

The studio previously stated it was considering a two-player option post-launch, acknowledging it was “something that was overlooked during development”.

“FromSoftware’s multiplayer spin-off is an exhilarating rush and a celebration of the studio’s prior achievements Souls veterans will devour,” I wrote in our Elden Ring Nightreign review.
