Elden Ring Nightreign’s latest patch is good news for madness fans, and should save you from auto-death after boss fight revives

Elden Ring Nightreign. It’s gotten another patch, and while not as beefy as you might like, it’s a box of bug fixes that you should know about. Especially if you’ve ever been fighting a Nightlord, gone down, been revived, and then immediately flopped back down dead.

Also, there’s a single balancing tweak which goes one step beyond to encourage the use of madness-infused weapons that I’m sure would look good with your baggy trousers.

As outlined in the notes for Version 1.01.3, the latest effort on FromSoft’s part to beat the bug bosses into submission via Carian code cutlasses, that sole balancing change is an increase to your chance of obtaining weapons with the madness status ailment. So, if you’ve yet to have a go at frenzying everything in sight, now’s your chance.

Delving into the bug fixes, one’s for an issue “where players would lose a battle after being revived from near death against a Nightlord or other Night bosses”. Judging by Reddit, this was just as frustrating to encounter as it sounds, with one player dubbing it a “hidden bossfight” and another likening it to psychological horror. A hidden bossfight in a FromSoft game that I’m not discovering via a video of a streamer beating it using a dance pad, cool.

Others rectify stuff like the Demon Merchant spawning near the Night’s Tide when you run into the Demon Merchant curse event, the damage dealt to some enemies when sniping weak points via Ironeye’s “Marking” skill not being right, and folks being able to nullify incoming Lightning Damage when affected by the Bolt of Gransax’s passive effect Power of the Great Ancient Dragon.

FromSoft also note that they’ve added “staff information” to the game’s credits, which is good to see. The final tweak I think it’s worth mentioning before directing you to check out the full notes if you want the rest is Steam-specific. It should stop the game freezing “momentarily or for an extended period in some environments” on PC, which is handy.

Elden Ring Nightreign’s first enhanced boss just dropped out of nowhere, and there’s an extremely useful new NPC too

Well, that was unexpected: Elden Ring Nightreign players just discovered the first of the new “enhanced bosses” FromSoftware said were coming this month. Defeating it rewards you with a new currency you can spend on a bunch of extremely useful stuff at a new NPC.

With the shadow-dropped update so fresh, it’s not clear how you unlock the new “Everdark Sovereign” version of Gaping Maw, but I’d assume you need to at least fight and defeat his normal version first.

I couldn’t put a team together in time to go and fight the Everdark Sovereign Gaping Maw boss, but streamer Oroboro was able to take him out alone. It looks like the lightning dragon starts in his second phase and causes a tornado to appear in the arena that you have to avoid.

Surviving the encounter will reward you with a new currency separate from Murk called Sovereign Sigils. You can go spend these at a new NPC in the Roundtable Hold who sells powerful new relics for each character as well as all the skins in the game for what is a relatively cheaper price than what they cost in Murk.

But here’s where it gets even better: This new NPC also lets you pay a small sigil fee to be able to start up any of the Shifting Earth events. Previously, you had to defeat three Nightlords for these things to show up randomly, but now you have direct control over them.

The NPC also lets you pay to receive the alternative version of a relic reward from the Guardian’s remembrance quests and to turn the lights (Site of Grace) back on in the Roundtable Hold’s expedition room to brighten things back up.

FromSoftware has said absolutely nothing about the update, so it’s unclear when we’ll see the other new bosses. We’ll just have to keep an eye on the list to see if it updates over the next few days.

Elden Ring Movie Director Has A Secret To Beating Malenia

Everyone who plays a FromSoftware game gets to that point where it feels like they’re just smashing their head into a brick wall over and over again. It can come early in a playthrough or toward the end. Some people give up while others persevere. 28 Years Later writer Alex Garland, who’s also directing the upcoming Elden Ring movie, recently explained his secret to getting good at Dark Souls and the games that followed.

The Most Sought After Elden Ring Sword Has A Storied History

Asked who he thought the the hardest boss was in Elden Ring in an interview with IGN, Garland said “Radahn’s really easy” and instead it was “Malenia who’s the tough one.” Now on his seventh playthrough of the hit 2022 open-world RPG, he shared how he eventually overcame FromSoftware’s toughest skill checks, and it wasn’t by watching a bunch of YouTube videos.

“I just throw myself at them again, and again, and again, and again,” he said. “That was the technique I learned with Dark Souls. It’s not that you get better, it’s more like monkeys and typewriters. You just keep doing it, and eventually, one day they’re dead.”

That wisdom might sound useless for most players struggling with a particular boss fight or frame-perfect dodge-timing, but it’s actually an inspiring message for anyone out there who’s been put off by Soulslikes and their notoriously punishing difficulty curves: keep trying and eventually, through practice or just dumb luck, you’ll succeed. Not everyone has that sort of time, but it’s an outlook that certainly takes the pressure off of actually feeling like you need to get better or show progress for all those failed attempts. Just keep playing and let destiny take the wheel.

Garland was otherwise tightlipped on his actual plans for the Elden Ring movie. Deadline reported that Kit Connor, who appeared in this year’s Warfare which was co-written and co-directed by Garland, was in the running for the Tarnished role, though everything’s just rumor and speculation at this point. Garland’s intimate experience with the game itself will certainly give him extra credibility with the fans no matter what direction he decides to take the adaptation in. He’s previously espoused his love of FromSoftware’s uniquely esoteric brand of storytelling, likening it to an “existential dream.” We’ll see how that translates to the big screen.

There are some fundamental rules to surviving in Elden Ring Nightreign. Things like “always hit the small camp first to get level 2″ and “never fight the Bell Bearing Hunter boss beneath the castle.” A third is “don’t bother trying to revive someone with three bars unless you have your ult.” But time and time again, players try to do that anyway. Now we finally have the math to prove why that’s such a dumb idea.

The Most Sought After Elden Ring Sword Has A Storied History

YouTuber Zullie the Witch, always at the forefront of FromSoftology, laid out how resurrecting fallen allies actually works in Nightreign in a recent video (via PC Gamer). While the visual icon over a fallen party member’s body shows a trisected circle with one segment filled for each time they’ve been downed, it turns out the actual number of hits it takes to bring them back to their feet scales dramatically with each full bar. (Yes, you revive your teammates by doing damage to them.)

Anyone who’s spent a few hours with the multiplayer roguelike intrinsically knows this, but having the math clearly laid out should help discourage anyone from trying to be a hero and getting cooked by a Nightlord in the process:

As Zullie the Witch explains, attacks done in an effort to revive a teammate are logged completely differently than normal damage against enemies. Each weapon type does a certain base amount of damage—starting at 10 for daggers and torches and peaking at 25 for ballistas—and it takes 40 damage points to fill up the first revive bar. Simple enough, a flurry of quick stabs with a dagger will do it. But the second and third bars are where things get deceivingly devilish. At two bars, the damage required per bar is 45 for a total of 90, and at three bars its 80 each, for a whopping total of 240 damage.

That would be tough enough on its own, but the extra tricky part comes from how fast the bars refill in-between hits. At one bar, the meter refills at just two damage per second. At two bars, meanwhile, the refill happens at nine damage per second, while at three bars, they’re refilling at 40 points per second. That’s why it’s essentially impossible to revive other teammates without an ultimate cooldown ready when you’re the last one standing. Turning your attention away for even a second to dodge an incoming attack will see almost all of your progress lost.

So why do many players insist on trying to revive thrice-downed teammates anyway? Psychologically, the fact that our minds are trained by the UI to think linearly while the game is scaling exponentially is no doubt part of it. Another is that no one wants to be the reason their team failed, getting your ass beat while strangers watch powerless to help. Third, it’s kind of just terrifying to go up against Nightreign’s tougher bosses with no backup.

Unless you’re used to playing solo, the game has a knack for making you think you’re better than you are because of how easy it is to whale on enemies while they’re trading off aggro against two other players. Once the odds are evened, the truth has nowhere to hide. As Zullie the Witch has shown, though, your best bet is to just dig in, block, dodge, and take pot shots until your ultimate art is ready.

FromSoftware has brought Elden Ring Nightreign servers back online following three hours of maintenance that kicked off earlier today. The downtime was necessary to deploy the game’s latest patch, version 1.01.3, which is now available across all platforms.

Update 1.01.3 is a fairly small one, and it arrives a little over one week after 1.01.2 was released. Given the version numbers, it’s safe to expect not-so-major changes, even if a few of the patch notes are definitely worth highlighting.

The latest Nightreign patch is made up almost entirely of bug fixes, but it does come with a balance tweak that increases the chance of finding weapons with the Madness status ailment in the loot pool.

Madness is among the lesser-used weapon elements in the game, and the status effect is among the least useful against Nightlord bosses – except against Equilibrious Beast Libra. It’s very likely that FromSoftware wants players to run into more Madness weapons more often in order to make that fight a little easier.

In terms of bug fixes, one of the more amusing addresses an issue that caused the damage dealt to some enemies when destroying their weak points – as a result of Ironeye’s Marking skill – to be higher or lower than intended, depending on the situation.

One cheeky bug that worked in players’ advantage caused the Lightning damage received to be nullified when the Passive Effect Power of the Great Ancient Dragon was active, which you get from the Bolt of Gransax weapon.

  • Fixed a bug where damage dealt to some enemies when destroying weak points created by Ironeye’s “Marking” skill was higher or lower than expected.

  • Fixed a bug where the Lightning Damage received from enemies would be nullified when affected by the Passive Effect “Power of the Great Ancient Dragon” of the “Bolt of Gransax” weapon.

  • Fixed a bug where the Ultimate Art gauge was filled more than expected when attacking some enemies.

  • Fixed a bug where the Relic Effect “Switching Weapons Adds an Affinity Attack” did not properly reflect the attribute when applied to Bows and Crossbows.

  • Fixed a bug where the amount of Runes needed to purchase Uncommon weapons from merchants incorrectly calculated.

  • Fixed a bug where players would lose a battle after being revived from near death against a Nightlord or other Night bosses.

  • Fixed a bug in some Multiplayer battles against a Nightlord where the camera would not display at the correct angle when not targeting an enemy.

  • Fixed a bug where lingering character phantoms did not appear in Limveld.

  • Added staff information in the game’s credit.

This is why it takes too damn long to revive a downed Elden Ring Nightreign player with three segments

Elden Ring Nightreign represents several key firsts for developer FromSoftware. As intriguing as it is to watch the studio, known for its single-player games, develop a multiplayer-only title that borrows from roguelikes and battle royale games, one has to stop and consider how the team attempted to solve certain problems.

One of the most interesting aspects of Nightreign’s gameplay is the revive mechanic, a feature that does not exist in any recent title from the studio, but one that is crucial to the co-op game’s core design.

The way this works in Nightreign is that, when a player’s HP reaches zero, they enter a down-but-not-out state. That’s pretty standard for multiplayer games, but how you actually revive a downed player is what sets FromSoftware’s latest apart.

In order to get a teammate back up, you need to attack them! How long you have to do that for depends on how many segments their DBNO bar has, which means you could be standing there swinging at them for a while before they’re back up.

You won’t be surprised to learn that, behind the scenes, there’s a formula that controls how this mechanic works. It is, however, quite revealing to look into the raw numbers and calculations the game makes, and how that affects your ability to revive/be revived.

The latest investigation from Souls expert Zullie the Witch – who recently uncovered the true meaning behind all those letter grades assigned to each characters’ attributes – have turned their gaze to Nightreign’s controversial revive mechanic to try and see how it actually works.

As explained in the video above, once a player enters the DBNO state, a 15-second timer starts. If you played – or watched – any Nightreign, you’ll know that the more times you die, the harder it becomes for teammates to be able to revive you.

The video reveals that the first down comes with revive value of 40, represented by one full bar. What you may not realise, however, is that each subsequent down – and thus, a filled bar – increases that value exponentially. The second time you fall, your bar will have two segments, at 45 each, for a total of 90. The third time fills all three bars, except each now has a value of 80, making the total 240 – nearly twice as much as the first two combined.

What makes that process even more frustrating is that you must continue attacking the downed player in order to maintain momentum and deplete all of their bars. If you stop for exactly 3.5 seconds, the bars will start refiling again. Zullie also discovered that the speed at which bars fill back up increases the more bars (more downs) a player has, starting at 2HP per second and going up to 40.

You can, of course, reverse these harsh penalties by staying alive long enough between revives – though you may not always have the chance, depending on how deep into an Expedition you are. The death penalties, according to the video, decrease by just one for every three minutes you’re alive. Alternatively, resting at Site of Grace will reset the whole thing to its default values.

As for whether your weapon or damage type affect the revive speed, the answer is a little complicated. Yes, more damaging weapons will technically make it faster to revive downed teammates, but buffs don’t affect a weapon’s revive damage.

There’s more in the video; it’s definitely worth watching. Among other things, it also explores how spells, and their varying attack chains, could have some bearing on their revive speeds.

Even before anyone was able to get their hands on Elden Ring Nightreign, we knew that it would bring back bosses, enemies, characters and more from classic FromSoftware games – including the Dark Souls series.

Dark Souls 3’s Nameless King boss could briefly be seen in an early trailer, and the final game has a lot more from those classic games. But how does the asset quality of their modern interpretations compare to the originals?

That is a very good question, and it’s one Souls dataminer and YouTuber BonfireVN attempts to answer in their latest video. The video focuses specifically on showing the Nightreign armour sets/skins that have history in earlier FromSoftware games.

For instance, it’s pretty clear to any Dark Souls fan that Wylder’s Abysswalker set is a clear reference to that game’s iconic Knight Artorias, just as the Guardian’s Sunlight Knight skin is an unmissable nod to that game’s Solaire of Astora. Even Patches makes an appearance, with his Dark Souls look having now become a skin (Black Leather) for the Duchess.

The video also uncovers several other, more obscure references to the classic games. Revenant’s Dragon School skin is a callback to Griggs of Vinheim, an NPC in the original Dark Souls. There’s also Ironeye, whose Sellsword skin is a replica of Dark Souls 2’s Chancellor Wellager attire.

In many cases, these armour sets have appeared in more than a single game prior to their recreation in Nightreign, which gives us an even better appreciation of the model’s evolution, and how much more detailed their latest incarnations are.

Elden Ring Nightreign’s new “enhanced” boss fights have leaked early, thanks to nosy modders

Elden Ring Nightreign will be updated sometime this month with “enhanced fights against existing Nightlords”, but as is often the way of updates, some of the relevant boss files are already in the current version of the game, and yes, there’s a mod if you want an early crack at them.

From Software teased the coming of spruced-up boss battles in a social media post on 3rd June, offering no clue as to what “enhanced” means in this context. Enhanced movesets? Enhanced haircuts? An inflated sense of self-esteem?

Subsequently, owl-eared, eagle-eyed players noticed that there were unused sections in every boss soundtrack theme that implied the addition of a third combat phase, together with unused boss relics that look like a reward for besting them in hard mode. Now, via PCGamer, NexusMods user TerraMag has dug up the files that let you fight the “enhanced” Nightlords and released them as the obliquely named Enhanced Nightlord Fights mod.

If you lack the fortitude to face these maxed-out titans yourself, or you just want to chill to footage of an apoplectic gigaroach, TerraMag has kindly released some videos of the enhanced fights. Bear in mind, of course, that these aren’t the final, From-sanctioned versions of each enhanced boss, so they might appear rough and unfinished.

TerraMag has harsh words for Adel, Baron of Night in one video description, complaining that “this fucker REFUSED to do any normal bite moves to let me show off the new effect on it”. Well, perhaps that’s because you woke Adel’s phase 3 incarnation up before the appointed time, guy. I’m not much of a morning person myself. Don’t ask me to bite anybody before I’ve had my second coffee.

Enhanced Nightlord scuffles aside, From plan to add duo expeditions to Elden Ring Nightreign in the near future – though naturally, there’s already a mod for that as well – in addition to more routine balancing and technical updates. Meanwhile, dataminers continue the task of hollowing out the game’s code like the entrails of a Sentient Pest. Amongst other feats, they’ve been peeking beneath the masks of the game’s Nightfarers.

I didn’t realize how much Elden Ring Nightreign upgraded its Dark Souls skins until I saw them side-by-side with the originals

FromSoft dataminer and YouTuber BonfireVN has uploaded a new video comparing Elden Ring Nightreign’s Dark Souls throwback skins to their original models, and I was surprised at how much they’ve actually been touched up since their original appearances.

I like to think I’m a tough, serious guy who’s not easily manipulated when a piece of intellectual property goes “Hey, remember this other intellectual property?” But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t squeal like a school girl when I saw the reprised Dark Souls bosses in Nightreign, or the Dark Souls skins you unlock by beating the game’s final boss.

I think I just assumed that all of these models were just straight ports of their original or Dark Souls iterations, but BonfireVN’s side-by-side shows that a lot of texture and fine modeling detail has been tweaked to make them better fit Elden Ring’s more advanced visuals.

My personal favorite reprise skin, the Llewellyn/Drang armor for Ironeye from Dark Souls 2 and 3, is a great example: Its fur collar has gotten a big structural rework, while its texture detail is a generational improvement on the Dark Souls 3 iteration.

The Llewellyn set also benefits from perhaps the biggest and most noticeable upgrade to any of the Dark Souls skins: An actual matching helmet. The OG versions left Fashion Souls-conscious players scrambling to find a matching hat, while Ironeye gets a sick helmet/hood combo I seriously wish had been in the original games.

The rest of the skins have similarly subtle, tasteful modernizations, and this all just has me thinking about what’s next. First, the inevitable future BonfireVN video(s) comparing the returning Dark Souls bosses to their originals, and second, new skins that will hopefully come with Nightreign’s unconfirmed DLC. My big wishlist item? A Sir Alonne outfit for Executor⁠—Dark Souls 2’s DLC samurai boss is a series favorite for me, and he perfectly fits the character.

I was surprised and delighted to learn that every FromSoft protagonist outside of Elden Ring Nightreign is 5 feet 7 inches tall, aka the best height for cool people

Aside from when it’s wildly out of whack with the game world, I don’t think about the height of videogame characters much. At a modest 5’7, I generally assume that most videogame protagonists are taller than me. There have been a few occasions where a character’s canonical height has surprised me, though. For example, a while back I read that Thief’s antihero Garrett was a strapping six footer, but a recent search revealed that this is actually not the case, and in fact he might be even shorter than me.

I had a similar reaction watching Zullie the Witch’s recent video discussing character height in FromSoftware’s games, in which she reveals that every FromSoft protagonist up until Elden Ring Neightreign is roughly 1.7 metres, or 5 foot 7 inches, tall. I’d always figured they were strapping six footers, if only because it further accentuates how massive the game’s bosses are.

This is, I should stress, not the central point of Zullie’s video. The vid explores how Elden Ring Nightreign’s new character height modifier affects the game mechanically. Elden Ring’s playable characters have noticeably different heights, even though they’re all based on the same player model. The smallest avatar, Revenant, is a petite 4’9, while at 6’6, the Guardian is at risk of bumping his head on doorframes a lot.

As for how this affects the game mechanically, the answer is “not much, but a bit”. Height difference has no effect on movement actions like running or jumping, but they do factor slightly into combat. According to Zullie, smaller characters have a slightly higher chance to avoid being hit by certain attacks (like arrows), while taller characters have marginally longer reach, meaning their swings will hit enemies from further away.

This might not be vastly surprising, but it is interesting regardless. Zullie also notes that the size modifier can be used to adjust the height of any character in Nightreign, and could potentially be used in future FromSoft games, possibly even as a character creation variable. Now I want a FromSoft RPG where you can create a character so small they can attack bosses internally. Though, to be honest, you could probably do that with some of the existing bosses anyway if the games supported it mechanically.

In any case, it pleases me greatly to know I can look all those other FromSoft protagonists in the eye without getting neckache. I suppose it also opens up a lot of cosplay opportunities, which isn’t exactly a huge concern for me. But it’s nice to know that I have options beyond “comic-accurate Wolverine”.
