Xbox Ally X’s Are Selling For Stupid Amounts On eBay

by admin September 30, 2025

Microsoft and Asus’ collaborative handheld Xbox device is arriving on October 16, 2025, with pre-orders available at various outlets right now. And as things go on the internet, eBay listings promising confirmed pre-orders are now going for two to three times the retail price –which is pretty ridiculous when the top-tier model of this handheld is already a thousand bucks.

Read More: Xbox’s Handheld Finally Has A Price, And It Costs More Than An Xbox

The ROG Xbox Ally X is an Xbox-skinned portable PC much like the Steam Deck or Asus’ own non-Xbox-branded “Ally.” These devices have become quite popular in recent years because, well, they’re usually pretty awesome. With the ability to carry around massive storefronts like Steam on the go, and enough horsepower to run graphical powerhouses like Cyberpunk 2077, it’s no wonder Microsoft wanted to get in on the action with a more Xbox-themed offering. The only problem is that the hardware manufacturer and game publisher is asking folks to spend $600 on the basic model, and a full four-digit $1,000 for the top-tier model featuring a more powerful processor. And yet, some eBayers think folks will spend even more than that even though it hasn’t sold out elsewhere. Wild.

Who’s buying this thing anyway?

The ROG Xbox Ally X (which is the more powerful of the two models) is technically more powerful than some of its competitors. It features a new AMD Z2E AI Chip. Is it a generational leap? Certainly not enough to prompt Valve to base a Steam Deck successor on it.

Still, the improved performance of the Z2E is worth noting, with around a 10 to 20-percent performance improvement over TKTK, and sometimes a bit more, under certain circumstances. That improvement, however, comes at a cost, namely about $500 more than what you’d pay for a Steam Deck, and $100 more than Asus’ excellent ROG Ally X, which is not the Xbox-branded one. (No, you’re not dumb, this naming convention is.)

So, that really just leaves the controller-based Xbox user interface, which reduces the overall processing power Windows takes up and is more gamepad-friendly, and the unique controller grips. And even then, folks have found a way to get the new Xbox game launcher working on regular, non-Xbox-branded Ally portable PCs, and, to be honest, while I haven’t held a ROG Xbox Ally, it’s gonna be hard to compete with the Steam Deck’s excellent ergonomics.

Read More: The Biggest Reason To Buy The Xbox Ally Handheld Just Leaked

At $1,000 for the top-tier Xbox handheld, it’s hard to see a compelling reason to upgrade if you already have a Steam Deck, and certainly not if you have a more powerful handheld than that. Who, then, is gonna get suckered into spending twice that for an eBay pre-order? Hopefully not you!

U.S. Silent Hill f fans slam pitiful Steelbook allocations as missing pre-order gifts pop up on pricey eBay auctions

by admin September 27, 2025

Silent Hill f fans who missed out on Steelbook pre-orders despite ordering early are slamming U.S. retailer GameStop and speaking out against opportunist scalpers.

Players were tempted to pre-order the physical edition of Silent Hill f ahead of time by the “free” addition of a striking Steelbook case for orders placed with Amazon in the UK, and GameStop in the U.S.

However, as orders began arriving across the States this week and fans stopped by stores to pick up their freebie, it became clear that GameStop did not have nearly enough Steelbook cases to satisfy demand.

Silent Hill f Review – An Occasionally Unsatisfactory Return To Form.Watch on YouTube

“Is anyone else having trouble trying to acquire their Silent Hill f steelbook?” asked one customer. “Preordered from GameStop months ago and went today just an hour after opening and they’ve run out of all four steel boxes they had in stock. All four. Called every GameStop in a 50 mile radius and NONE other store received ANY shipment of steel boxes at all.”

“Everyone is getting the shaft,” someone responded. “Stores that even got allocation were at like 10% or less compared to their pre-order number.”

“I went to a GameStop earlier today as they opened, and they only got one,” commented someone else. “And I was the second guy in line. Supposedly, they should get another shipment. But it’s really stupid that there is a shortage of Steelbooks, and on top of that, online preorders require you to go in store to pick up the Steelbook. I wish Amazon US or Best Buy had the Steelbook, ’cause at least they would ship it with the game. I guess I’ll check in and see if they ever get more in the upcoming weeks.”

Other players claimed GameStop employees confirmed to them that each store received only a handful of Steelbook cases irrespective of how many pre-orders the stores logged, with some saying their local store “didn’t even get a single Steelbook…”

“I work at GameStop. We got a total of nine Steelbooks… for 30+ preorders,” explained another commenter.

If this all sounds very familiar, that’s because it is. When Silent Hill 2 Remake pre-orders began shipping in the UK in October 2024, GAME customers similarly received their game without the steelbook sweetener they’d hoped to get when placing their orders, and it took several weeks for GAME to fulfil delayed shipments. This time around, however, Konami partnered with Amazon UK to distribute the Steelbook pre-order bonus, which seems to have been more successful this time around.

What’s particularly galling for some fans, however, is the number of Steelbook cases that have made it onto online auction sites like eBay. Despite being given away for free, the collectible case is being auctioned for anywhere from $30 to $205, both with and without the game bundled alongside it.

In a thread entitled “people ruin everything” with hundreds of upvotes, one fan wrote: “What [is] really disappointed me even more was going on eBay just to see what resellers were up charging for the cases, ruining it for other people by being greedy. I know [the] Silent Hill franchise ha[s] always been expensive, I’ve gotten my fair share of games over the years, but for people to sell a case for more than market value is sickening.”

With most retailers advertising the freebie as available “while stocks last”, however, there’s very little customers can do, as demonstrated by this email response from GameStop customer care, who told one player that “even with online pre-orders, the Steelbook must be claimed in-store” and “these items are extremely limited and available only while supplies last.”

We’ll reach out to GameStop and update as/when we hear back from the retailer.

Whilst slow to get going and a little cumbersome early on, I had a good time with it in Eurogamer’s Silent Hill f review, calling it “a return to form worth sticking with” and awarding it four out of five stars.

Modded Borderlands 4 guns are being sold on Ebay, but the sellers aren’t making much money

by admin September 26, 2025

Modded Borderlands 4 guns and equipment are being sold on Ebay with tailored gun parts and effects. However, as of writing, it doesn’t appear this grey market of modded loot is particularly profitable.

Ebay – a public e-commerce marketplace – is no stranger to gaming related side hustles, with numerous account, cosmetic, and service sellers setting up camp there over the years with the release of popular online video games. Eurogamer reached out to one Borderlands modded gun merchant to find out how it’s going.

“It is fairly difficult to do as they have included a new encryption method to the guns this year that makes doing specific builds very very hard and will take, I would imagine, a long time to get perfected” states one Borderlands modded weapon reseller to Eurogamer under anonymity.

Check out the Borderlands 4 story trailer here!Watch on YouTube

This new encryption method implemented by Gearbox not only makes the act of modding the exact weapon you want difficult, it’s also making prospects of profit for resellers unlikely due to the cost of getting the decrypted values for weapons people will actually pay for. When asked how successful business is, the seller told Eurogamer:

“Not very successful. I’ve sold maybe three or four since release, which is around £15 to £20, which doesn’t even cover the costs to build the guns, but I don’t do this to make money or profit.

“To make the modded guns you often need to pay for tables that data miners have made that breakdown gun parts. Each part of the gun has an encrypted value, so does the rarity, manufacturer, level etc and the tables can be expensive to buy at around £50 to £100.”

As such, at the moment, it appears that the grey market for selling modded Borderlands 4 loot is more for the hobbyists rather than those looking to make a buck from a hot new release (unless you’re a data miner able to sell off valuable info, rather than the sought after weapons themselves).

Whether or not this will become a great problem as time goes on, and more of the game’s loot encryption is broken down and made publicly available, remains a potential problem for the future. Although as a PvE game, the modded gear seller made an argument for why the practice of modding isn’t doing any harm:

“Borderlands games have always been modded and I’ve modded them since Borderlands 1 and every game in between. It’s a huge part of why I love the games so much.”

Pikachu Illustrator Pokemon card sells for $4 million on eBay

by admin September 14, 2025

The rarest Pokemon card of all time, the Pikachu Illustrator, has sold for $4,000,000 in an eBay auction.

The PSA 9 Mint card was listed by longtime collector smpratte and closed at a flat $4 million on September 12, making it one of the most expensive sales in the hobby’s history.

The Illustrator Pikachu was first awarded in 1998 to winners of the CoroCoro Comic Illustration Contest in Japan, with only an estimated 20 to 39 copies ever handed out. Considered the “Holy Grail” of Pokémon cards, it has become synonymous with extreme rarity and value.

In 2022, Logan Paul made headlines when he purchased a PSA 10 version of the same card for over $5 million, wearing it on a chain during his WrestleMania debut.

$4,000,000 Pikachu card sells at auction

The copy sold on eBay is one of the most famous examples in circulation. Labeled by PSA as the first known PSA 9 Mint Illustrator, it has been featured in multiple publications, including a 2017 SMR article, and even serves as the Bulbapedia stock image of the card. The listing describes it as “the most documented copy of the Illustrator,” adding to its historical significance.

The seller, smpratte, is a well-known figure in the Pokémon community and noted in the description that this card is rarer than Honus Wagner, Mickey Mantle, Black Lotus, and even Charizard. With this $4 million sale, the Pikachu Illustrator further cements its position as the most valuable Pokemon card in existence.

Karthik Rajendran, Head of Collectibles at eBay Canada

by admin August 31, 2025

The only time I’ve ever used eBay was to replace the right earbud of my Jabra Elite 75ts, which I had thought were lost on one devastating night earlier that week. I later found the missing earbud tangled in some clothes. I never did use that replacement earbud.

Most people who use eBay, however, don’t have pointless tales of lost items and instead spend their time browsing for their next haul of collectibles. Pokémon cards, Labubus, a lightly used DVD copy of Bionicle: Mask of Light – you name it, they probably have someone willing to buy or sell it. At Fan Expo Toronto this year, eBay set up an interactive booth that allows you a glimpse into the life, nay, the soul of the collector. That morning, I finally came to understand what it was like to use eBay the normal way.

The 4-part experience started with a hypothetical collector’s living room, filled with memorabilia ranging from a Travis Kelce action figure to a Charmander plushie morbidly relegated to the fireplace. There, my picture was taken with an item of my choice – we’ll circle back to that in a bit. The second area was a largely collectible-less kitchen, in which I played a (thankfully very easy) memory game, which awarded me a small chocolate (my breakfast).

The third area was a bedroom which I could describe to you, but will instead tell you about the horrifying, demonic presence of a black-eyed Spongebob Squarepants plushie sitting atop a shelf. It’s all I could focus on, really. I don’t have a picture handy but it was most certainly this same item. Would not recommend him as your next elf-on-the-shelf.

The fourth and final room contained the true reward: my very own collectible card. This thing is 1/1, extremely rare, and mint condition if anyone wants to buy it off of me for, let’s say…$40 CAD? Prior to the experience, I had to answer some Mad-Libs-esque questions so that an AI could generate a Pokémon-style trading card with my photo – which forced me into a moral dilemma as a generative AI hater and a seeing-myself-presented-in-the-form-of-a-trading-card lover. Overall, it was a cute time and a great precursor to the main event, a brief interview with Karthik Rajendran, Head of Collectibles at eBay Canada.

I would like to start by looking into the future a little bit. What’s going to be the next big thing in collectibles? Is that even something that can be predicted?

Absolutely, and it’s one of the great things that we get a first look at. With eBay being the home of collectibles, it’s really the destination where everybody comes together; we get a pulse on the industry and what people are searching for at the moment. Sometimes we actually do get a sneak peek of what’s coming. Anime has become very, very popular. One Piece is very popular. Next year, with Pokémon having a celebration and [a 30th] anniversary year, that’s going to continue to be a huge trend.

Let’s talk more about Pokémon. What do you think it is about Pokémon that sets it apart from everything else? Why has it lasted so long?

I really think it’s all about that kidult trend right now; everybody’s embracing that inner child, that inner sense of play and nostalgia. When I was a kid growing up, it was all about collecting Pokémon cards and Magic: The Gathering cards and Yu-Gi-Oh cards. Now I have adult money and I get to spend more money on bigger cards since those barriers have been taken away.  That’s what I’m really excited about now, and that’s what I think is fueling that passion in the community today.

What is it about Labubus specifically that makes them the big thing right now?

Honestly, it has come out of nowhere. But if you remember way back when, Beanie Babies had a very similar boom, and Labubus are having that moment. They’re cute, they’re furry, they’re collectible, which is very, very cool. There are chase figures in there, and social media has really brought it to another level. I think we’re going to continue to see this Labubu trend for a while, so I’m really excited to see where it goes and where they bring the brand.

How would you say you’ve seen the industry shift in the past five years or so?

We’ve definitely seen more collectors and enthusiasts coming in. But really, the industry itself hasn’t changed a whole lot. The collectible community has always been there, and if nothing else, I think social media and us, eBay, have been that catalyst for people to have access to more inventory. eBay has been great at trying to evolve with the community and to really value collectors and what they’re searching for; that’s really propelled it.

Would you say that collecting is cyclical? Do you think we’ll see collectibles from the past return, like baseball cards or Beanie Babies?

Absolutely. Baseball cards were huge in the ‘90s, and it’s seeing a resurgence now. The Toronto Blue Jays are doing amazing right now, and that’s certainly helping with that locally. The collectibles business is very, very cyclical – Pokémon is a great example. I think with One Piece being very popular right now with millennials, we’ll be seeing that again. We’ll see a similar boom in about 10 years with those adults trying to go back and relive that moment.

What do you think is the biggest threat to the industry currently?

I don’t really know what threat there is at the moment. For me, the beautiful thing is just to see the passion in the community. That’s the enduring thing about collectibles in the business. I wouldn’t go so far as to say there are any real threats; I think everybody is just embracing this moment.

Thanks so much for taking the time!

Thank you!

My friends always told me I had a gross yet powerful presence.
