Paramount signs deal with Activision to produce live-action Call of Duty movie

Paramount has signed a deal with Activision to produce a live-action movie based on its tentpole Call of Duty franchise.

Per Variety, the partnership will see Paramount “develop, produce, and distribute” a feature film based on the 22-year-old franchise, although the valuation of the deal has not been made public.

David Ellison, Paramount chairperson and CEO, said in a statement that he was a “lifelong fan” of the series, adding that getting to adapt it “is truly a dream come true.”

“From the first Allied campaigns in the original Call of Duty, through Modern Warfare and Black Ops, I’ve spent countless hours playing this franchise that I absolutely love,” Ellison said. “Being entrusted by Activision and players worldwide to bring this extraordinary storytelling universe to the big screen is both an honor and a responsibility that we don’t take lightly.”

“Throughout its history, Call of Duty has captured our imagination with incredible action and intense stories that have brought millions of people together from around the world, and that focus on making incredible Call of Duty games remains unwavering,” added Activision president, Rob Kostich.

“With Paramount, we have found a fantastic partner who we will work with to take that visceral, breathtaking action to the big screen in a defining cinematic moment. The film will honor and expand upon what has made this franchise great in the first place, and we cannot wait to get started.”

There are no further details about the deal or the movie at this time, although it’s thought the partnership encompasses both TV and feature film.

We recently learned that Blumhouse is developing a movie adaptation of indie horror Phasmophobia.

A live-action film adaptation of Call of Duty is in the works at Paramount, having signed a deal with Activision Blizzard.


Paramount – now under media company Skydance – has announced the news (thanks Deadline), with CEO David Ellison a big fan of the series. Activision will be a creative partner on the film.


“As a lifelong fan of Call of Duty this is truly a dream come true,” said Ellison. “From the first Allied campaigns in the original Call of Duty, through Modern Warfare and Black Ops, I’ve spent countless hours playing this franchise that I absolutely love. Being entrusted by Activision and players worldwide to bring this extraordinary storytelling universe to the big screen is both an honour and a responsibility that we don’t take lightly.”

The film will follow the studio’s 2022 film Top Gun: Maverick. “We’re approaching this film with the same disciplined, uncompromising commitment to excellence that guided our work on Top Gun: Maverick, ensuring it meets the exceptionally high standards this franchise and its fans deserve,” continued Ellison.


“I can promise that we are resolute in our mission to deliver a cinematic experience that honours the legacy of this one-in-a-million brand – thrilling longtime fans of Call of Duty while captivating a whole new generation.”

Call of Duty is ripe for a cinematic adaptation, both for its action-packed setpieces and millions of sales.


It will follow other game adaptations in recent years, including Nintendo’s multiple projects, Sony’s The Last of Us TV show, FromSoftware’s massive Elden Ring, classic Sega racing game OutRun, and horror games like Phasmophobia and The Medium.

Paramount has agreed a deal with Activision to turn the blockbuster Call of Duty game franchise into a big-budget movie.

Since launching in 2003, Call of Duty has transformed into one of the most successful game titles on the planet.

The many, many CoD sequels and spinoffs have sold more 500 million games worldwide, and those titles boast over 100 million active players across all platforms.

As first-person shooters that lean heavily into war, they’re an obvious fit for a film adaptation, but Hollywood has failed to crack the code… until now.

Call of Duty movie to “expand upon what made the franchise great”

According to Variety, Paramount will “develop, produce, and distribute a live-action feature film,” while the deal also “encompasses the potential for Paramount to expand the CoD universe across film and TV.” Meaning the studio’s plans should play into Hollywood’s current buzz-word: ‘shared universe.’

There are no details about what game or subject the proposed movie will focus on, but those involved have been talking up the deal.

Black Ops 7 carry forward is no more as devs axe old skins and promise a return to a more ‘grounded’ Call of Duty

Activision has confirmed that you will not be able to access operators, skins, and weapons from Black Ops 6 in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.

The feature, known as carry forward, was previously going to give players the ability to use select content from Black Ops 6 in the upcoming entry. Although some fans appreciated the option to bring forward their favorite unlocks, many were concerned that this would undermine the identity of the new game.

I was personally pretty disappointed with the news that carry forward would be present given the disparate settings of the two titles. While Black Ops 6 is set in the 1990s, Black Ops 7 takes place in 2035 – so running around with Gulf War era gear wouldn’t make a lot of sense.

The news of the decision was announced in a community update blog post, where the developers discuss the top frankly.

“We know there’s been a lot of conversation recently about the identity of Call of Duty. Some of you have said we’ve drifted from what made Call of Duty unique in the first place: immersive, intense, visceral and in many ways grounded,” it read. “That feedback hits home, and we take it seriously.”

“Black Ops 7 needs to feel authentic to Call of Duty and its setting. That is why Black Ops 6 Operator and Weapon content will not carry forward to Black Ops 7,” it continued.

Importantly your current stock of Double XP tokens and GobbleGums will still carry over into Black Ops 7, which is good news for those aiming to progress as quickly as possible on day one.

Warzone and Black Ops 6 is also not affected, so you don’t need to worry about losing access to any of your current content.

The post also explained that the developers had heard feedback on in-game bundles, which some players found a little too outlandish in Black Ops 6.

“In Black Ops 7, bundles and items will be crafted to fit the Black Ops identity,” the post stated. “We hear the feedback. We need to deliver a better balance toward the immersive, core Call of Duty experience.”

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is set to release is set to release on November 14, 2025 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC.

Call Of Duty Responds To Ugly Skins By Making A Big Change To Black Ops 7

Activision and Treyarch are making a big change to Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, just under 12 weeks before its launch in November. All those wacky cosmetics from Black Ops 6 will no longer carry over to the new sequel as previously promised. The devs behind Call of Duty say the change is to ensure Black Ops 7 is “authentic to Call of Duty and its setting.”

On August 26, in a lengthy community update posted on the official Call of Duty website, Treyarch thanked fans for all the feedback and acknowledged the ongoing conversation online surrounding crossover skins and wacky cosmetic items in video games.

“We know there’s been a lot of conversation recently about the identity of Call of Duty,” said the studio. “Some of you have said we’ve drifted from what made Call of Duty unique in the first place: immersive, intense, visceral and in many ways grounded. That feedback hits home, and we take it seriously. We hear you.”

Players were worried that the weird cosmetics and crossover skins from Black Ops 6 would immediately turn Black Ops 7 into a Fortnite-like experience. That’s because the plan was to let skins from BLOPS 6, which now includes characters like Beavis and Butt-Head, carry over to BLOPS 7. But that’s no longer happening.

“Operators, Operator Skins, and Weapons from Black Ops 6 will no longer carry forward into Black Ops 7,” announced Treyarch. “Black Ops 7 needs to feel authentic to Call of Duty and its setting. That is why Black Ops 6 Operator and Weapon content will not carry forward to Black Ops 7. Double XP tokens and GobbleGums will still carry forward, because we recognize your time and progression are important.”

The developers of Black Ops 7 also claimed that a “ton of feedback” has already been implemented into the game. And the studio explained that future cosmetic bundles and items added to BLOPS 7 will be “crafted to fit the Black Ops identity.” Treyarch further added: “We hear the feedback. We need to deliver a better balance toward the immersive, core Call of Duty experience.”

Activision did confirm that BLOPS 6 skins will still move over to Warzone. So your strange collection of characters can still go enjoy battle royale.

A single developer has remade Call of Duty 2’s Carentan level with photo-scanned models, ray tracing and more

As well as boosting its GeForce Now cloud streaming with PS5 Pro-beating hardware and new peripheral options, Nvidia has also detailed some of its recent RTX Remix successes at Gamescom 2025. If you’re not familiar, RTX Remix is a set of tools for remastering old games with modern graphics techniques, converting ancient engines to support ray-traced lighting, shadow and reflections, new particular effects, higher-quality materials and so on. Specifically, the firm is announcing the winners of its RTX Remix contest, and showing off exactly what makes each fan-made graphics mod worthy of recognition. I took a look at some of the winning entries at Nvidia’s booth here in Cologne, and was particularly impressed by the RTX Remix of a seminal classic, Call of Duty 2.

The project is the work of a single developer, tadpole3159, who has been painstakingly photo-scanning real-world WW2 weaponry in order to produce a version of the game that holds up against modern competitors. Like other RTX Remix projects, the aim is to use physically-correct materials, tagging different assets in the game with what they’re made of so that they have realistic roughness, reflectivity and so on. With that in place, objects in the world can react realistically to changing lighting conditions, cast appropriate shadows and produce rough or clear reflections as appropriate.

Descriptions of the mod state that tadpole3159 is a lead artist at a UK game studio, which perhaps explains how a single person has been able to create assets (at least for the Carentan level of the game) unassisted. The demo that I saw included hotkeys for changing the time of day, allowing you to see how the game world can change drastically from bright sunlight, to the dead of night, to varying levels of overhead cloud. (The developer is British, the Nvidia reps explained, so they found it easier to produce lots of convincingly realistic grey skies.) As well as the material upgrades, rooms are being upgraded with period-appropriate contents, walls get new details and foliage is expanded to lush excess. It dramatically changes the look of the game, and is an impressive effort for a project made in around two months.

The other RTX Remix projects highlighted by Nvidia are also worth perusing, as they’re all free downloads from the mod.db site. The ones I saw were Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, which uses more of a “use AI to upscale everything, then hand-make the really important stuff” approach, which manages to convincingly recreate the atmospheric feel of the game while ensuring the entire thing looks at least OK. Painkiller, by contrast, went for a more selective approach, with the developer creating full 3D replacements for what were previously flat textures or static objects, allowing for swinging torches that splash light around the room as they are shot into motion, and intricate ceiling supports that cast complex shadows to produce real depth. That approach requires a lot of research and insight into the original intents of the developers, but produces sterling results.

Nvidia is also continuing to upgrade the capabilities of the RTX Remix suite, with a particle editor that arrives next month. The demo I saw was quite straightforward, showing a half-finished fire effect that was tweaked and tuned by adjusting sliders for particle size, number and gravity. The Nvidia rep explained that most games in the DX8 and DX9 era lacked proper particle editors, so modders normally have to create their own or work around the limitations, but the new tool should make creating particle effects like smoke, sparks, steam or fire much quicker.

Nvidia also announced that its newish Nvidia app would soon include an overlay for showing what DLSS and other overrides are active – making it much easier to go “did that actually work?” when upgrading to a newer preset – and RTX Hair is coming soon to Indiana Jones: The Great Circle, bringing fancier and more efficiently rendered follicles.

To the dismay of sweaty ‘movement kids,’ Battlefield 6 is nerfing Call of Duty sliding and jumping to maintain a ‘traditional Battlefield experience’

Duck, dive, and dodge: Following feedback from the Battlefield 6 beta that its movement was too squirrely and unpredictable, Battlefield Studios is planning significant changes for the full release.

The announcement came in an “Open Beta Debrief” blog published on Battlefield’s official social channels, which, in addition to movement, touched on hot topics like map size, Rush, and weapon balance. While the takeaway from most of those topics could be summed up as “we’re looking into it” or “wait and see,” movement is one area that already has significant changes in progress.

“Movement mechanics have been adjusted to create a more balanced and traditional Battlefield experience. Momentum, especially horizontal speed, carried from a slide into a jump has been reduced. There is now a greater penalty for consecutive jumps, which lowers jump height when jumps are spammed,” the blog reads.

That momentum change is likely more of a bug fix than a change in direction, as players figured out early on in the BF6 beta that you could consistently pull off ridiculous super jumps by exploiting small bursts of speed from jumping and sliding.

BF Studios is also targeting accuracy while jumping and sliding. Series veterans argued throughout the beta that there wasn’t enough of an accuracy penalty for shooting while sliding into a room or jumping around corners—hallmark tools of Call of Duty “movement kids”—and developers agree.

“Firing while jumping or sliding will result in increased inaccuracy,” the post continues. “These changes are designed to make sliding and jumping more situational, so they are no longer ideal options for engaging in gunfights, and will contribute to a gameplay pace that rewards skillful movement without becoming too fast or unpredictable.”

Whether or not you liked BF6’s squirrelly beta movement, it was undeniably chaotic. A top-upvoted post on the Battlefield subreddit highlights an extreme case of someone constantly chaining jumps and slides to ice skate across the map while maintaining perfect accuracy.

How much freedom of movement is considered overboard depends on the series’ roots, but even FPSes known for speed struggle to satisfy everyone. In 2023, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 cranked up the bunnyhopping and slide-canceling just a year after Modern Warfare 2 deliberately slowed things down, to the delight of many and horror of CoD traditionalists. As I wrote in 2023:

“Players who use these slippery moves will tell you it raises Call of Duty’s skill ceiling, and they’re technically right. FPSes have a long tradition of adopting community-developed movement techniques until they’re unofficial canon, and CoD is no different, except that I find this example of it extremely annoying… A lobby full of jumping beans distorts the horizontal, boots-on-the-ground rhythm of CoD into discount Apex Legends. It also, as I really must emphasize, looks very stupid.”

It’s nice to see BF Studios getting ahead of important mechanical details like this. We’re still two months from launch day, but it turns out there will be another round of Battlefield Labs testing before then. The next Labs test will finally introduce us to BF6’s two biggest maps at launch: Mirak Valley and Operation Firestorm.

Are you ready for some more Black Ops? Call of Duty sure hopes you are, because Black Ops 7 is launching in a short while, and a beta test is coming up first.

As usual, pre-ordering the game will give you some early access to the beta. But if you don’t mind waiting a few days, you can pick it up when the open beta arrives that same week if you’re looking to give BO7 a try without putting down any money just yet.

Let’s look at all the essential details about the BO7 beta from Activision.

The Call of Duty Black Ops 7 beta has two important dates to remember. The open beta kicks off officially on Oct. 5 on all available platforms. However, an early access period begins on Oct. 2. In short, those with early access will be able to hop in 72 hours early.

We will have to wait for Activision and their plans regarding the official starting times. The following countdown is based on when new seasons typically begin in Call of Duty titles, which will help you get a fair idea about when the open beta for Black Ops 7 could begin.

Once again, the timings aren’t from an official source and speculation for now. Once we get confirmation about the exact launch timings, we will update them on our countdown to help you stay on track.

How to play the BO7 beta

The BO7 beta is available to all players on Oct. 5, but you can play as early as Oct. 2 if you pre-order the game.

The dates have been confirmed by Activision, so you can call in sick now if you want to play as soon as possible. If you decide to pre-order any of the available bundles of Black Ops 7, you’re guaranteed early access to the open beta. Additionally, you’ll also be entitled to the following benefits:

  • Reznov Challenge Pack – Immediately unlock the SOG Reznov Operator Skin in Call of Duty Black Ops 6 and Call of Duty Warzone. Plus, get access to unlock the Stalingrad Reznov and Memory Reznov Operator Skins.

What’s included in the BO7 beta?

Full details about what’s to come in the BO7 beta will likely come on Sept. 30 at Call of Duty NEXT, a live streamed presentation about what’s to come in CoD. Recent CoD beta tests have included a small sampling of multiplayer maps and weapons, along with special unlocks that carry into the full game.

More details about BO7, its beta, multiplayer, Zombies, and even BO7’s integration into Warzone will be announced at CoD Next, which is just a few days before the early access beta begins.

Unknown Worlds sues former leadership team for breach of employment and “fiduciary duty of care”

Unknown Worlds is suing its former leaders Charlie Cleveland, Adam McGuire, and Ted Gill for breach of equity purchase agreement, breach of implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, breach of employment agreement, and breach of “fiduciary duty of care” in their capacity as directors.

Parent company Krafton sent GamesIndustry.biz a link to a heavily redacted copy of the filing in which the three former leaders of Unknown Worlds are accused of “openly threaten[ing] Krafton with litigation, and expressly demanding and prioritizing a release date for Subnautica 2, writing: “they demanded the Earnout, not the early access release that would best entice the gaming community into the Subnautica 2 world. Personal (not Company) goals were the priority for [them].”

Details of the legal complaint against Krafton, Inc. by the former leadership of Subnautica 2 developer Unknown Worlds became public last month. The complaint concerns a $250 million bonus payout tied to revenue targets for the 2025 Early Access release of Subnautica 2, which the former shareholders of Unknown Worlds Entertainment, represented by Fortis Advisors LLC – allege owners Krafton, Inc. sought to avoid paying out by delaying the game using “pressure tactics”. The publisher said it had “requested a delay” in releasing the highly-anticipated sequel in early access to “safeguard the quality of Subnautica 2 and maintain player trust.”

This subsequent lawsuit accuses the three former leaders of then threatening to self-publish Subnautica 2, “releasing it without Krafton’s backing, marketing, promotion, or distribution.” This, Krafton claims, left it with “no choice but to terminate their employment.”

The company also alleges that McGuire, Gill, and Cleveland downloaded tens of thousands of “company files” and emails in the lead up to these terminations. “These downloads were, by far, the largest downloads for each of the three Key Employees at any time since at least 2022,” Krafton added, and said the former leadership “refused” to return “or at the very least confirm” what devices and confidential information remained in their possession.

“When pushed, the Key Employees threatened to delete files and again refused to provide access to their devices containing Confidential Information for inspection,” the publisher added.

The 74-page complaint also reiterates Krafton’s former position that Cleveland and McGuire had “checked out” of developing Subnantica 2, leaving Gill unable to “overcome to complete abdication of the Subnautica 2 creative and technical leadership team.”

As Battlefield 6 commits to ‘keeping it grounded’ with skins, Call of Duty director makes an unconvincing promise to ‘calibrate’ cosmetics in Black Ops 7

We’re set for another Call of Duty vs. Battlefield face-off this year, and it’s already been fascinating to watch how these two military shooters present themselves. When it comes to one of the most incendiary topics in multiplayer games at the moment, the rising prevalence of goofy Fortnite-style skins, Call of Duty has become the poster child of ugliness run amok.

The growing exhaustion over incongruent cosmetics that erode Call of Duty’s art style is what prompted Battlefield Studios’ stance on skins in Battlefield 6: “It has to be grounded. That is what BF3 and BF4 was—it was all soldiers, on the ground. It’s going to be like this. I don’t think it needs Nicki Minaj. Let’s keep it real, keep it grounded.”

Time will tell if Battlefield 6 actually sticks to that mission statement—the allure of tacky crap might be irresistible when enough players are eager to buy them—but it’s telling that, given the same opportunity to renew its stance on cosmetics, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 developers were decidedly wishy-washy about the whole thing.

“We always try to make sure that we are trying to touch the widest audience. I’ve had the pleasure of working on Call of Duty now for almost 20 years, and we’re constantly looking at ways to push into different audiences and fans, and that’s what you saw with that; there are fans that really love it. Obviously, there are fans who those may not be their favorite. We’re going to try to calibrate that as we move forward, and we take that feedback seriously. But again, we are trying to make sure that all fans feel represented in the game and figuring out that tight balance is something we’re paying attention to.”

It’s the usual marketing-approved gobbledygook that almost sounds like something meaningful was said, but wasn’t: Activision has heard the complaints, is taking them “seriously,” and will “calibrate” going forward.

What sort of calibration it has in mind is open to interpretation, and non-specific enough that Blops 7 can still comfortably cash in on collaborations with cartoons, ’80s action heroes, and Amazon Originals without going against its stated stance.

My read on it is that, while Call of Duty’s full-bodied embrace of goofy skins probably isn’t loved by many of the developers actually creating the art that gets slopped over by the Store tab, the backlash is not a particularly pressing concern for Activision at large. There are two sides to this, after all—lots of people enjoy uglifying their operators (to the tune of $20 per bundle).

There’s another wrinkle to Blops 7’s “calibrated” cosmetic plan: Starting with Season 1 of Blops 7, all weapons and cosmetics from Black Ops 6 will carry forward, inviting a tidal wave of fashion nightmares introduced over the previous 12 months to the new game.
