Activision debuts Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 at Xbox Games Showcase 2025

by admin June 9, 2025

Microsoft and Activision revealed Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 in a dramatic cinematic trailer during the 2025 Xbox Games Showcase. Having two Black Ops games release consecutively is a first for the franchise, and Activision’s Treyarch and Raven studios teamed up to make it happen following 2024’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

The Black Ops 7 trailer is a trippy thing, like something you might expect out of Remedy’s Alan Wake series, with scenes of the protagonist appearing to experience a fragmented consciousness, a moment where a cityscape folds in on itself Inception-style, laughing TV sets, red butterflies made of data, and talking robot butlers escorting someone through a suspiciously, eerily calm executive suite. While we’re not entirely sure what’s going on, we do know who’s leading the charge this time: David Mason, the lead from Black Ops 2 whose last appearance was in 2018’s Black Ops 4.

“The year is 2035 and the world is on the brink of chaos, ravaged by conflict and psychological warfare following the narrative events of Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 6,” the game’s official description reads on Xbox Wire. “With cutting-edge technology in hand, the Black Ops team led by David Mason must fight back against a manipulative enemy who weaponizes fear above all else.”

Activision said Black Ops 7 will support solo play and multiplayer squads in a new co-op campaign, and you’ll have “near-future weaponry” to take on the challenge. Black Ops 7 will also include a standalone multiplayer mode with new maps and a zombies mode that continues the Dark Aether storyline.

There’s no Black Ops 7 release date yet, but when it does launch, it’ll be available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.

The Next Call Of Duty Is Black Ops 7

by admin June 9, 2025

Screenshot: Activision / Xbox / Kotaku

The next main entry in the blockbuster Call of Duty series has been announced. Players can look forward to Black Ops 7, which is described as a direct sequel to Black Ops 6. The upcoming FPS doesn’t have a release date yet, but if history is any indicator, it will be out around October.

This Modern Warfare 3 Gameplay Feature Spices Up A Weak Campaign

During Xbox’s big Summer Game Fest event, the company ended the whole thing with a final trailer which ended up being Black Ops 7. Here’s the trailer, which confirms a new zombies mode will be included.

And here’s Xbox and Activision’s official description of the new Call of Duty:

The year is 2035 and the world is on the brink of chaos, ravaged by violent conflict and psychological warfare following the events of Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 6. Wielding cutting-edge technology, the Black Ops team led by David Mason must fight back against a manipulative enemy who weaponizes fear above all else.

According to Xbox Wire, Treyarch and Raven are developing Black Ops 7, which directly follows last year’s Black Ops 6. The game will include a co-op campaign, near-future weaponry, and a new round-based Zombies map.

Interestingly, Call of Duty Black Ops 7 will not be skipping last-gen machines. Xbox confirmed that the big sequel will be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, alongside Xbox Series X/S, PC, PS5, and Game Pass. It’s wild to see Call of Duty sticking around on such old hardware for this long, but at this point, it seems like the tech powering these recent games works fine on the older consoles. So I guess Activision and parent company Xbox see no reason to leave money off the table… yet.

Xbox also announced that we’ll learn more about the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 during a bigger reveal later this summer.

Microsoft Still Working To Bring Call Of Duty To Nintendo Fans

by admin June 8, 2025

Image: Nintendo / Activision / Kotaku

Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 is the next entry in Activision’s long-running military shooter franchise and it’s once again coming to last-gen consoles. But what about the Switch 2? More than two-years after Microsoft and Nintendo entered into an agreement to bring Call of Duty to Switch, nothing has materialized. Sources close to the matter tell Kotaku that both sides are still working on it.

Nintendo Switch 2 Could Launch With Almost No Reviews

Microsoft and Nintendo have now negotiated and signed a binding 10-year legal agreement to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo players—the same day as Xbox, with full features and content parity—so they can experience Call of Duty just as Xbox and PlayStation games enjoy Call of Duty,” Microsoft president Brad Smith announced back in February 2023. We are committed to providing long term equal access to Call of Duty to other gaming platforms, bringing more choice to more players and more competition to the gaming market.”

That deal, the details of which have never been made public, was inked backed when Microsoft was trying to consolidate regulatory approval for its roughly $70 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. To assuage concerns that it might take one of the biggest gaming franchises in the world and make it exclusive to Xbox, Microsoft made agreements with other companies, including eventually Sony, promising that at least for the first 10 years it would continue bringing Call of Duty to other platforms, including ones it hadn’t been in years like the Switch.

So where is it? The list of platforms for Black Ops 7 revealed today does not include Nintendo older hardware or the recently launched Switch 2, even though the latter has performance capability on par with the PlayStation 4, which is getting the game this fall. While sources tell Kotaku that both Microsoft and Nintendo are still committed to getting the franchise on the latter’s hardware, it’s unclear what the hold up is or what the final result will be.

Call of Duty hasn’t appeared on a Nintendo platform since 2013’s Ghosts came to the Wii U. While the ports of the multiplayer shooter never ran particularly great on the Mario maker’s underpowered consoles, it at least provided an option for fans to access the annual blockbuster. One obvious avenue for getting Call of Duty on weaker hardware is using cloud gaming. Black Ops 6 is currently available to stream with Game Pass Ultimate but cloud gaming hasn’t been used to bring last year’s entry to Switch.

Black Ops 7 isn’t the only Microsoft first-party game that’s currently a no show on Switch 2. Despite the increased horsepower of the handheld hybrid, games like Sea of Thieves and Grounded which were previously ported to PS5 remain MIA. That might be because Microsoft doesn’t currently have plans to bring either of them over, or it could simply be that Nintendo wants to announce those plans on its own time. For now, the Switch 2 remains conspicuously absent from Microsoft’s recent multiplatform shift.

Possible New Call Of Duty: Warzone Map Teased In Black Ops 7 Trailer

by admin June 8, 2025

Activision announced Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 during the Xbox Games Showcase, and the reveal trailer could also be hinting at Warzone’s next big map for battle royale.

Near the end of the Black Ops 7 reveal trailer, there is a scene of four soldiers dropping down onto a map, which looks very much like a squad diving into a Warzone match together. The map in question also looks similar to the rumored Avalon map found in Black Ops 6’s spectator mode, with both featuring a cluster of islands connected by bridges. This specific scene was saved for the end of the trailer and shown alongside a brief tease of Treyarch’s Zombies mode for Black Ops 7, so it is possible Activision is teasing Avalon for Warzone.

However, fans shouldn’t get their hopes up too soon. Black Ops 7 is revealed to be a co-op campaign, so it is possible the scene in question is just a section of the campaign used to show off four-player co-op. Additionally, known Call of Duty insider “The Ghost of Hope” claims the Avalon map was scrapped for battle royale and would be used for campaign and Outbreak Zombies mode for Black Ops 7.

Of course, we’ll likely learn more about Black Ops 7 and Warzone in the coming weeks, as Activision says more details will be revealed later this summer.

Season 4 is currently live in Black Ops 6 and Warzone. The season features a crossover event with the Ballerina movie, which is part of the John Wick universe. Players can earn free cosmetics and unlock a new marksman rifle during the Ballerina event in Black Ops 6 and Warzone.

Splitgate 2 Adds Battle Royale As Dev Dunks On Call Of Duty

Splitgate 2 Adds Battle Royale As Dev Dunks On Call Of Duty

by admin June 7, 2025

Image: Summer Game Fest / Kotaku

1047 Games cofounder Ian Proulx took the stage at Summer Game Fest on Friday to promote his new game Splitgate 2 by calling out the current state of online shooters. Eschewing the marketing speak of most of his peers at the glossy showcase, he said he wants Titanfall 3 to come out and called his new game’s surprise battle royale mode “fucking awesome” while wearing a “Make FPS Great Again” hat.

The Week In Games: A Star Wars Classic Returns & More New Releases

Splitgate 2 is a free-to-play arena-style shooter where players deploy portals to mess with physics and the fabric of reality to outwit their opponents. “I grew up playing Halo and I’m tired of playing the same Call of Duty every year and I wish we could have Titanfall 3,” Proulx said on stage alongside host Geoff Keighley. He added that the new battle roayle mode aims to combine the old-school arena shooter sensibility with a mechanic to portal to other worlds.

Out today on console and PC after a beta last month, 1047 revealed that the new mode is going live alongside the rest of the game. The subtext of Proulx’s pitch channeling President Trump’s slogan was clear: while EA cancels games and Activision leans into predictable cash-grabs, the underdog team at 1047 is shaking things up with a game by gamers for gamers.

Meanwhile, the riff on “Make America Great Again” took place shortly after a clash between Los Angeles residents and law enforcement over ICE raids in the city’s garment district only blocks from where Keighley’s Summer Game Fest Play Days industry event takes place this weekend. Trump has ordered the immigration agency to arrest a record number of people every day for deportation even as ICE detention centers are criticized for overcrowding and lack of food.

The original Splitgate launched in early access in 2019 and spiked in popularity. The party didn’t last, however, and by 2022, the studio abandoned the game to work on a new project. Last year it revealed that new project was actually just Splitgate 2.

Activision Says It Accidentally Added More Ads To Call Of Duty

Activision Says It Accidentally Added More Ads To Call Of Duty

by admin June 4, 2025

Image: Activision / Kotaku

Last week, players noticed something gross and annoying in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone. Following a big update for the new season, many angry players spotted ads for bundles and battle passes in never-before-seen places, like inside the loadout menu. Activision now says this was all just a big whoopsie and has removed the ads.

Long-Lost Halo Demo Comes To Life

On May 29, Call of Duty news and rumors outlet CharlieIntel reported that players were encountering more ads in Black Ops 6 and Warzone following Call of Duty’s big season 4 update. The annoying and obtrusive ads were popping up in the loadout and the class creation menus, as well as in the events section of each game’s menus. The loadout menu in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone is likely the place in which players spend the most time when not actually shooting people in-game. And to suddenly see cosmetic and season pass ads shoved in here angered many. It seems the backlash was so intense that Activision stepped in to remove them all.

On June 2, the official Call of Duty “updates” account run by Activision tweeted out a short message addressing the annoying ads, explaining that they were added to the games “in error.”

“A UI feature test that surfaced select store content in the Loadout menus was published in the Season 04 update in error. This feature has now been removed from the live game,” said Activision.

Of course, many players didn’t buy this explanation, with some suggesting that Activision quietly added it in to see what the reaction would be, and when players went nuclear, backed off. Even if you take Activision’s word that it was mistakenly added, the fact that it was even testing the idea of adding more advertisements into more parts of Call of Duty means it was clearly being considered. And that’s concerning.

This is a franchise with some of the worst, most ad-riddled and ugly menus in all of modern video games. To shove even more ads into the few areas of CoD that are still useful and useable is gross, especially when you remember that Activision still charges $60+ for new Call of Duty games and sells an endless list of in-game cosmetics every day. Did the company really need to test out more ways to squeeze in ads? I don’t think so, and based on how players reacted, I’m sure Activision will be careful about adding more advertisements in the near future.

Activision claims Call of Duty loadout ads for microtransactions were a test it published accidentally following intense community outrage

by admin June 4, 2025

Activision has claimed advertisements for microtransactions Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Call of Duty: Warzone players were seeing on their loadouts were added by mistake, following intense community fallout.

This announcement came from the official Call of Duty Twitter account, which posted, “A UI feature test that surfaced select store content in the Loadout menus was published in the Season 04 update in error. This feature has now been removed from the live game.”

Reactions to this post aren’t exactly glowing in positivity. Twitter users expressed their disbelief in the statement, unconvinced that a feature like loadout ads were accidentally implemented, rather they were pulled down following negative feedback. One user wrote, “this some soviet era level gaslighting”.

You can watch the Season 4 trailer here, if you need a catch-up on what’s new.Watch on YouTube

This controversial addition at the weekend came alongside the game’s fourth season, and essentially meant that every time you swapped weapons you’d see a billboard-style poster shilling a premium skin. This, as you can imagine, went down like a lead balloon among the Call of Duty community, with one player on Reddit writing, “actively witnessing call of duty become the krusty krab”.

The Season 4 update also brought with it the returning Verdansk map to Warzone, widely believed to be the best map the game has ever had, with a variety of new additions to mix things up for older players.

At the same time, Activision continues its years-long struggle against cheaters, recently allowing players to turn off crossplay in order to help avoid cheaters, a nasty group of ne’er-do-wells Activision admits are most prominently found on PC.

How To Open The Overlook Safe Room In Call Of Duty: Warzone

How To Open The Overlook Safe Room In Call Of Duty: Warzone

by admin June 2, 2025

Season 4 is live in Call of Duty: Warzone, and the big update added the new Overlook point-of-interest to Verdansk. This new location also comes with a brand-new Easter egg to complete, which will reward you with some of the best gear in the game. Here we guide you through the steps needed to complete the Overlook Safe Room Easter egg.

How to open the Overlook safe room

The Overlook is a massive new skyscraper located in Downtown Verdansk. This building is a hot spot for landing in Season 4, and there is a lot to explore here, but there is a secret safe room that can be unlocked for tons of rewards.

To complete this for yourself, you want to search the Overlook for pool balls and keycards. It’s best to land at the bottom of the Overlook and go inside. The roof is a hot spot, but if you have teammates, you can also send someone to check the roof spawns.

Collect pool balls and keycards

There are three pool balls in total that you can loot, but you technically can complete this by only finding two of them. You only need one keycard to complete this Easter egg, but if you find extra, you’ll be able to unlock even more loot from inside the safe room.

Pool ball location near armchairs in the stairway

Pool ball locations

Pool balls are found in random spawns, but a few possible locations are:

  • On a counter in the first floor cafe
  • Near the plants at the center of the second floor
  • On the floor near two armchairs in the stairway leading up to the third floor
  • Take the zip up to the third floor. A keycard might spawn in the plants around the pyramid structure
  • On a shelf on the southwest corner of the roof
  • From the rooftop, take the stairs down one level and look for a tarp hanging near the northeast side of the building. A pool ball can spawn on the floor

Keycard in the plants by the pyramid

Keycard locations

Keycards seem to have plenty of various spawns. Possible keycard locations:

  • Near the seats and plants inside the lobby area
  • On the table in cafe’s storage room
  • Check the plants on all floors, especially near the pool ball spawn by the pyramid on the second floor

Also, make sure you check any enemies you’ve killed. Other players might drop the keycards or pool balls you need to complete this.

How to get the door code

My code was 368541

Once you have at least two pool balls and one keycard, zip up to the fourth level and enter the penthouse. Go to the pool table and interact with the pool rack on the wall. Note the numbers shown on the balls. This is for a six-digit code, and the order of the balls shown on the shelf is the exact sequence needed to unlock the safe room.

If you only found two balls, don’t worry. You can still get the last number needed through trial and error. As shown in the image above, my code was 36854_. I didn’t find the third ball, but I got lucky and my last number was 1, so I got it on my first guess.

How to find and unlock the safe room

Safe room keypad

Take the stairs inside the penthouse to go down one floor. Turn a quick right and then left to reach a gray locked door with a keypad. Enter the code from the pool balls. If you don’t have the number from the last ball, then try each number on the keypad for the last number needed. You have unlimited tries to get it right.

Inside, you’ll find the safe room is packed with high-tier loot. This includes stacks of cash, killstreaks, and equipment. Three orange supply boxes can be unlocked if you have extra keycards for them. Some players have even reported getting the Specialist perk here, but this was not my experience.

For more Warzone Easter eggs, make sure to check out guides for how to unlock the Downtown bank vault and how to complete the Floating Doors Easter egg on Verdansk.

Call Of Duty Season 4 Update Broke Multiplayer Lobbies In This One Way, Activision Investigating

by admin June 2, 2025

When the Call of Duty Season 4 update arrived this week for Black Ops 6 and Warzone, players quickly noticed that some multiplayer lobbies did not display player levels and level icons. Some theorized that Activision did this on purpose to help prevent people from quitting lobbies if they noticed they were going up against a group of high-level players. But it turns out this was only a bug.

Activision’s Call of Duty Updates account confirmed that the developer is investigating a bug that is causing player levels and level icons to fail to appear in lobbies. “Thank you for your reports! We are actively investigating this issue,” Activision said on the game’s Trello board.

Some of the other known issues for Black Ops 6 multiplayer include theater mode being temporarily disabled due to an issue loading replays, lobbies showing the wrong platform icon next to a player’s name, and the Winner’s Circle failing to appear in some cases on Stakeout. Another known issue is that players who call in a Dreadnought may get stuck in a state where they’re unable to crouch or slide.

For more, check out GameSpot’s rundown of all the new maps and guns in the Season 4 update, along with our breakdown of what’s in the new battle pass. The Zombies mode, meanwhile, gets a big update with the introduction of Grief mode. There are numerous new updates for Warzone, too.

Additionally, Call of Duty’s infamous riot shield has debuted in Black Ops 6 as a finishing move. There is also a John Wick / Ballerina crossover store bundle coming soon.

If you’re keen to try Black Ops 6’s new Season 4 content, the game’s multiplayer is free right now for Xbox users.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 now shows you microtransaction ads when you swap weapons

by admin June 1, 2025

Eagle-eyed Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 players have spotted a new feature on the weapon selection menu.

Right at the top there now sits advertisements promoting premium weapons and skins, so players get exposed to ads for microtransactions in-game.

As some players point out, it’s not an advert in the classic sense, and no one’s trying to flog you a cheeseburger or a pair of jeans every time you swap a weapon. Nonetheless, it’s a new and insidious addition that we haven’t seen in Call of Duty games before.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Opening Scene and Gameplay (4K).Watch on YouTube

“One of the unwelcome changes I’ve noticed with Season 4 is that they’ve now inserted a new ad spot at the top of the list of your weapon specifics builds,” wrote one player. “So now every time you toggle between weapon builds you get to stare at ads for $20-$30 skins. I’m sure the Activision developer who suggested this terrible feature is very proud of themselves.

“This change is especially unneeded because you could already toggle from Builds to Shop on any given weapon and apparently not being thrown directly in our faces didn’t make them enough money. Many of us payed [sic] $60-$100 for a feature game and don’t want to be bombarded with additional ads.”

“Actively witnessing Call of Duty become [SpongeBob SquarePants’] the Krusty Krab,” replied another.

“Well guys looks like COD can suck a fat one,” replied someone else. “This ad mess is ridiculous. They make huge bank already for them to even do this should be illegal. I’ve never been done with a COD this fast ever. But she’s getting deleted. You can’t scrounge people for money and not have a decent game. I’m not asking for a great game, just not a buggy game.”

In a separate thread that’s been upvoted almost a thousand times, one player opined: “I wouldn’t even be mad if this was just in warzone, a free game, but putting it in a pay-to-play premium title, with how expensive they’re getting?”

“Agree 100%, it really feels like one of those free cell phone games from a tiny indie studio begging you for money at every turn. Pathetic for a full price, stand alone game from a huge developer,” replied another.

Earlier this year, in a update shared on social media, developer Treyarch said it recognised cheaters “are frustrating and severely impact the experience for our community” but insisted it was addressing the issue, and will continue to do so “throughout 2025”. At the same time, it confirmed 136,000 ranked play accounts were banned for cheating across both Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone.
