Performance Art Duo Operator ‘Make Movement Collectible’ With NFTs

NFTs have provided digital artists with new ways to monetize their work by introducing scarcity to the market, but other creative fields can also benefit, performance art duo Operator told Decrypt.

The performing arts have a “similar issue” to digital artists, explained Ania Catherine, who works with collaborator Dejha Ti as Operator. Prior to the advent of NFTs, Catherine said, “Digital artists were in a position of being in a service industry, working for advertising firms, the film industry, for entertainment—and then they would have their digital art on the side.”

Performance artists are in an even more challenging position thanks to the ephemeral nature of their work, she said. “You have an expensive medium to work in performance, because you need body, time, space, people, dancers—and in the end, there’s kind of nothing to sell.”

That’s historically limited performance artists to “dancing in commercials, teaching dance, or going on tour and dancing behind a musician,” in order to pay the bills, Catherine explained.

Collecting movement

NFTs change the game by enabling performance artists to create permanent, collectible pieces. “What does it look like if someone can own movement as an art object?” she said. That, in turn, enables “a form of patronage of people who use movement as an art form, who don’t want to use it for entertainment, but as real personal expression. How can we create an infrastructure where that can be actually monetized?”

Operator has applied that thinking to its artwork “Human Unreadable,” a three-act piece combining choreography, generative art, blockchain and cryptography that builds to a live performance to be presented at the end of 2026.

“What we felt when we first started diving into crypto art was we were missing the presence of the human body,” Catherine said, adding that, “Early on, we could scroll through platforms for 20, 30 pages and never see the human form.”

Accordingly, Human Unreadable places the human form “at the core” of the artwork, with each of the 400 pieces in the collection representing an “underlying unique dance” generated by an algorithm. The work draws on computational choreography’s “rich and interesting history,” stretching back to the earliest digital art exhibitions at the ICA in 1967, she explained.

Storing human movement data on the Ethereum blockchain also presented its own set of challenges, she added. “We definitely felt that we were not supposed to be using blockchain and Art Blocks in this way,” she said, but were “a little delusional enough” to push through the roadblocks of a technology that was “not meant to communicate the body and dance.”

The end result explores and interrogates the technology behind generative art, she explained. “In the way that something can be spatially site-specific, or location-wise, site-specific, Human Unreadable is site-specific to long form, on-chain generative art.”

Operator’s perseverance has paid off, with Human Unreadable scooping the Experiential Award at the recent Digital Art Awards. It joins a brace of gongs on their shelf that includes two Lumen Prizes, a S+T+ARTS Prize and an ADC Award—“which are technically design awards,” Catherine said, “but we’ve won them for experiential design and things.”

Beyond the market

And while the NFT art market may be in the doldrums, with trading volumes crashing from a $2.9 billion high in 2021 to just $23.8 million in the first quarter of 2025, artists are still keen to explore the possibilities of the underlying technology, Catherine said.

“Artists don’t create for a market,” she told Decrypt. “They create because they have a curiosity or a question or a drive, or something hits them that just needs to come out.”

And while it’s still important for artists to “make money from the value that they’re bringing to the world through their craft,” she said, it shouldn’t be a surprise that they continue to push the boundaries. “Most artists don’t do it for the money or for the market. They often do it despite the bad conditions of those things,” she said. “Artists are always going to make art.”

If you want to play Elden Ring Nightreign in a duo, the Seamless Co-op mod is already out, dead simple to use, and it won’t mess up your vanilla save

FromSoftware is apparently reserving the right to add an official two-player mode to Elden Ring Nightreign⁠—right now you can only play solo or in a trio. But Yui, the modder behind the Seamless Co-op series of Souls multiplayer hacks, has already done it again with Elden Ring Nightreign a mere day after launch.

PCG senior editor Wes Fenlon and I hopped in for a round, and it works exactly like you hope it would⁠—it’s even slightly more buttoned up than the already-great original Seamless Co-op, won’t mess up your game by drawing Easy Anticheat’s Eye of Sauron, and even opens up Nightreign for further modding.

To install Seamless Co-op, you just have to whack the files from Nexus Mods into your Elden Ring Nightreign/Game folder. It runs from its own .exe, does not interact with FromSoft’s official servers, and creates separate save files from the original game, keeping EAC out of things.

That does lead to a lone hitch for you to consider, though: Any progress you’ve made so far won’t carry into Seamless Co-op, and vice-versa. Wes and I had to chop through the tutorial Margit encounter again before queueing up. This seems to be the cost of doing business, but worth keeping in mind.

Otherwise, though, it runs exactly like the official game⁠—you can even invite friends to group up through Steam still. It also worked perfectly in our run: No hitches, glitches, or connection issues to speak of. It just works. If you don’t mind the split progression, have a special Elden someone in mind to play the game with, and can’t stand a third wheel tagging along, this is the mod for you.

I thought the first Nightlord felt easier than I remembered, but that was just 30 hours of experience talking: Yui told us that she hadn’t touched difficulty balancing in any way for two-player. That may be the lone exculpatory factor in a modder whipping up a two-player mode so quickly when FromSoftware did not.

In FromSoft’s defense: It’s still clearly finding the balance for Nightreign’s solo mode, while Wes and I saw the potential for some lopsided, frustrating gameplay when one player goes down and the other has to revive them in a duo⁠—you no longer have the sturdy tripod of a third player taking aggro. All the same, Yui’s work remains, as ever, incredibly impressive, and it’ll be interesting to see how Seamless Nightreign develops, especially if FromSoft ever comes up with its own two-player solution.

Elden Ring Nightreign director says Fromsoft “kind of overlooked and neglected” playing as a duo, but 2 player-friendly “post-launch support” is being considered

Elden Ring Nightreign’s director says that while FromSoft prioritised getting the three-player and solo experiences the game offers just right for launch, folks who prefer to take on the challenges of the night as a pair might be getting some duos-focused “post-launch support”.

You can play Nightreign as a duo right out of the gate, provided you don’t mind being matched up with a random third wheel to make up your team, much in the same way anyone playing solo will end up with two strangers that gaming law dictates will either be unbelievably skilled or utterly hopeless.

Speaking to IGN, Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki was asked why the game doesn’t have an option for a duo to drop right into a game as a twosome if they wish.

“The simple answer is that this is simply something that was overlooked during development as just a two-player option, so we’re very sorry about that,” Ishizaki re-iterating that trios play the game’s three person teams naturally facilitate and solo play were the two options that it made most sense for the studio to focus on from the get go, especially when it came to balancing.

“We did put a lot of effort into creating this experience that was playable for solo players in as much as the rules and new systems allowed,” he explained, “So in putting all our efforts into that aspect, we kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect, but this is something that we are looking at and considering for post-launch support as well.”

It makes sense. Trios action is “at the core of Nightreign”, so that’s gotta be the main focus, and FromSoft games are famous for letting you solo bosses, so to cater to the usual single-player crowd playing by yourself has to be a priority in terms of striking a difficulty balance that’s in the Godskin Goldilocks zone. You’ve only got finite time and resources, so the couples take a backseat.

Ishizaki outlined the sort of work that’s gone into making sure the game for individual players a bit further on in the interview, explaining: “Solo play is generally encouraged and is a natural part of the game loop, but also in general for those solo players — and this might be something that’s difficult to notice in multiplayer — but the activeness and aggressiveness of enemies towards any one single player has been adjusted so that you don’t find yourself in any unreasonable multi-foe fights. And just generally, when you’re playing single player, the parameters adjust dynamically depending on the number of players in that session.”
