Metal Detectorist Discovers Rare Boat Grave Containing Viking Woman and Her Dog

by admin June 15, 2025

The saying goes that a dog is a man’s best friend, but an archaeological excavation in Norway proves that women care about their four-legged companions just as much as men do, even 1,100 years ago.

Archaeologists from the Arctic University Museum of Norway have revealed a 10th-century Viking boat grave on the Norwegian island of Senja. The buried individual is likely a woman who belonged to an elite class, as Science Norway first reported. Most notably, the team found a dog carefully buried at her feet.

“It appears to have been placed with real care,” Anja Roth Niemi, a museum archaeologist who presumably took part in the excavation, told Science Norway. “There are stories of prominent people doing everything in their power when their dog became ill. So even back then, people had deep bonds with their animals.”

A metal detectorist first discovered brooches and bone remains at the site just 7.9 inches (20 centimeters) beneath the ground two years ago. Suspecting the presence of a Viking woman’s burial, the Arctic University Museum of Norway applied for permission to investigate and were finally able to conduct a proper excavation when the landowner decided to expand a garage on the property.

“After the upper layer of soil was removed, it became clear that this was a boat grave,” the museum wrote in a social media post. “The decayed wood from the boat was visible as a thin dark strip in the subsoil, with the site where the bowl brooches were found approximately in the middle.”

The work revealed a 17.7-foot-long (5.4-meter) boat in which a Viking woman and a dog were buried alongside objects associated with elite burials, including bone or amber beads, a pendant, and ornate brooches, according to Science Norway. This is not the first time archaeologists have found dog remains alongside Viking ones, but it provides further proof that dogs were prized companions even 1,100 years ago.

The brooches’ design—oval with silver thread—helped the team date the grave to approximately 900 to 950 CE, as reported by Science Norway. They also indicate that the buried individual was a woman, given that oval brooches were usually Viking women’s jewelry, though only bone analysis can confirm this beyond a doubt. Furthermore, the boat grave and grave goods altogether suggest that the woman was a high-class individual.

“Only the elite would receive a burial like this,” Niemi told Science Norway. Niemi and her colleagues also uncovered agricultural tools and textile instruments, the latter of which further associate the burial with Viking womanhood. Further analyses will confirm the individual’s sex and shed light on her age, height, diet, and health, while also offering more insight into Viking burial traditions. Moreover, after discovering another brooch not too far from the burial, the archaeologists hope to continue investigating the area in the hopes of finding another grave.

According to the museum’s post, the last days of the excavation were spent “recording all the contents of the grave and securing them for transport and storage until they can be examined in detail under controlled conditions at the laboratory in Tromsø.”

It is my hope that they keep the woman and her pet together in Tromsø, so that the dog can continue guarding its owner in the afterlife as it likely did when they were both alive.

Pepe’s Dog memecoin lands KuCoin listing after securing official Furieverse IP

by admin June 9, 2025

Pepe’s Dog memecoin debuts on KuCoin following its recent partnership with the original artist and owner of real-life Zeus.

Pepe’s Dog (ZEUS), the memecoin inspired by Pepe the Frog’s iconic dog, has landed its third major CEX listing with its debut on KuCoin. The listing on KuCoin follows previous listings on Poloniex and LBank. While the token’s on-chain contract remains listed as ZEUS, KuCoin will display it under the ticker ZEUSETH due to a ticker duplication issue.

ZEUS’s listing marks another milestone in the memecoin‘s rapid ascent since launch, where it grew from a $50,000 market cap to over $20 million at its peak in late May. At press time, ZEUS holds a market cap of $6.7 million as ZEUS price recovers from its all-time low reached five days ago. It’s currently up 170% since ATL.

KuCoin’s listing of ZEUS follows the project’s recent announcement that it had formed an IP partnership with ND Haus, the original artist who first illustrated Zeus, the dog featured alongside Pepe in Matt Furie’s early comic works. Alongside him, Jon “Jagged” Eyrick — the owner of the real-life Zeus — has joined the project as a core contributor and IP rights holder.

“Never thought my dog would end up a meme legend, but here we are. Teaming up with ND Haus, the OG artist who first drew Zeus, is surreal. As the guy who built the Binance API and the owner of the real Zeus, it’s wild (and kinda awesome) to see him become the face of a project that actually respects the culture and the roots,” commented Eyrick.

This positions ZEUS as the first and only memecoin with direct, authentic ties to the Furie Universe.

35 Years Ago Today, Garfield’s Owner (Didn’t) Drink Dog Semen

by admin June 1, 2025

On May 30, 1990, the world received a new Garfield comic strip. This isn’t a big deal. We’ve been getting daily Garfield comic strips since 1978. We got a new one today! But 35 years ago, a single Garfield comic strip became one of the most infamous in the franchise’s history because a lot of people thought it depicted the lazy cat’s owner drinking dog semen.

Here’s the Garfield comic strip that appeared in newspapers around the country exactly 35 years ago today:

Image: Paws Inc / Jim Davis / Kotaku

So yeah, that does seem like Garfield’s owner Jon Arbuckle just drank some dog semen that was sitting in a cup while trying to flirt (unsuccessfully) with veterinarian Liz. That would explain why she mentions that Jon should expect a “fine, healthy litter of puppies” and why he appears to have consumed something truly revolting.

And that’s what a lot of people thought after seeing the comic in 1990. For many, many years, Garfield fans and people who like weird facts would spread the story of Jon drinking dog semen around the web as people reacted in disbelief or assumed the strip was altered. And even if you chose to believe that Garfield creator Jim Davis didn’t intend the joke to be about dog semen, there wasn’t a readily available and funny alternative explanation.

In 2017, we finally got some answers. Buzzfeed contacted Davis and asked him about the dog semen comic strip. And to the disappointment of many, the creator behind the famous comic claimed Mr. Arbuckle didn’t drink dog semen. However, his explanation of the strip is still pretty weird and not very funny.

“On the farm, we used to give first-calf heifers a high-protein supplement to help them deliver healthier calves,” Davis told Buzzfeed. “The supplement was provided by our vet. Since Liz is a vet, I assumed that there would be a similar supplement for dogs. There you have it!”

I’m inclined to believe Davis, though it’s still wild to me that nobody involved with the Garfield strip pointed out to the creator how the comic could be misinterpreted. I also find it strange that Davis would assume everyone in the world is familiar with high-protein pre-natal cow supplements and would understand that this random comic was referencing that very specific concept.

Screenshot: Realnutsling / Kotaku

In 2017, however, Davis threw a wrench in the works when someone allegedly bought a signed copy of the infamous strip. And included on the artwork was a message from Davis: “These events are canon.”

You know what, I changed my mind. I think 35 years ago Jon Davis wanted to see if he could get away with making a comic about a dude drinking dog semen, and pulled it off, but can never admit it without destroying Garfield’s brand. But Davis, it’s 2025. The world is weird and loves this kind of shit now. If you admitted it, you could make shirts about it, and make even more money than you already have. So I say fuck it. It’s been nearly four decades. Admit the truth, Jim, and profit.

We Bought a ‘Peeing’ Robot Attack Dog From Temu. It Was Even Weirder Than Expected

by admin June 1, 2025

Elsewhere, I can only assume that the controller has been pumped full of helium, such is its hollow, airy lightness. Heavily inspired by the shape of an Xbox controller, I particularly love the fact that its bumper buttons and triggers are simply formed from one immobile piece of moulded plastic. There’s something quite beautiful in their utter uselessness that I enjoy very much.

As for the business end, it’s an ADHD nightmare. Littered with a chaotic array of buttons in seemingly no logical order, I give credit to the designers for creating a controller that laughs in the face of muscle memory.

Initial attempts at turning Clippy on are unsuccessful. The on/off switch does nothing, and the charging light remains dead when the USB-C cable is plugged in. There are no instructions.

Opening the battery compartment reveals the culprit—the battery is disconnected. Was this to avoid it draining in transit, or to reduce the risk of spontaneous combustion? Either way, it’s plugged back in. Clippy lives.

And wow, he’s loud. The built-in speakers are beyond shrill. I desperately look through the carnage of controller buttons, hoping to find a volume or mute option. There isn’t one.

Naturally, I press “urinate” first. Clippy’s hind leg raises. That, I expected. What I didn’t expect, was cheerful whistling, and the sound of water tinkling into a toilet bowl.

I look, and happen upon the “handstand” button. This, I feel, will be an impressive test of his dexterity. A handstand maneuver will surely call upon multiple gyroscopes and accelerometers, combining and crunching data from numerous sensors in real time to ensure that Clippy’s body remains perfectly poised in balance.

I press the button, and Clippy immediately—and rather violently—faceplants. The force of this manoeuvre takes me off guard, and the impact is loud. I am worried.

A moment passes, his rear legs rise, and they begin to twitch. I presume this apparent seizure is meant to represent elegant scissor kicks. It’s reminiscent of how ants communicate with their antennae, a form of silent communication. “Don’t blame me bro, did you really expect anything else?” I can almost hear him plead. But, somehow, Clippy does return to his feet and appears unscathed, ready for more. Me? I’m not so sure.

Multitalented

As I mentioned, the controller has many, many buttons—no less than 17 functions in fact—and I’m not going to bore you with overly gratuitous descriptions for each one. Instead, here’s a quick rundown of the main buttons, to give you a general idea of some of Clippy’s talents:

Kung fu: Absolutely zero semblance of any martial art moves, or even a cheeky backflip. Instead (and completely inexplicably), some form of poolside, Lost Frequencies-esque lounge music blasts out. Clippy “dances.”

Swimming/Dance: I recently saw Usher perform live. Both of these buttons involve vigorous floor-humping that surpass even his most sexually charged efforts. A truly impressive feat. Oh, and a side note for any optimists out there, Clippy is not waterproof. Do not, I repeat do not, introduce him to water.

Warhammer 40,000 Darktide is getting a playable space cop, and a trusty cyber dog

by admin May 23, 2025

Fatshark has revealed the next class for Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, as part of today’s Warhammer Skulls event. The Adeptus Arbites – essentially Warhammer 40K’s version of space police – is getting some representation, bringing with them a trusty cyber mastiff companion.

You’ll be bale to play it yourself on June 23 across all platforms, available to buy for $11.99 or your regional equivilent. The class is customizable with over 80 talent nodes, which should allow for a bunch of player expression. It also comes with new weapons in the form of a shotgun, assault shielf and shotpistol, and the dominator maul.

You’ll also be able to tweak with the look and sound of the Arbites of course. It has three personalities to choose from, as well as six voice lines to make your own.

In addition, Darktide is getting a bit of a narrative overhaul. Right now, if you play the game, it can be a little tricky to get a steady narrative line given the fact you can kind of jump around the story through different matches. On June 23, alongside the new class, the game is getting a improved narrative experience. This comes in the form of a curated mission path that players can journey through, introudcing key characters and events in order.

The difficulty system is also getting tweaked! Players will now be able to unlock higher difficulties by demonstrating skill, rather than just levelling up. By completing a number of missions cleared at your current level, you cna steadily proceed to more challenging content.

Finally, starting today, a special event is coming to Darktide. Nurlge Totems will start popping up across different missions, and by destroying them players can make the mission a touch more challenging, but earn some extra prizes.

What are your thoughts on this new class and curated narrative experience? Let us know below!

Naughty Dog has another new game in the works

by admin May 20, 2025

Appearing on the Press X to Continue podcast, Druckmann said, “There’s another game that’s being worked on at Naughty Dog where I’m [in] more of a producer role and I get to mentor, and watch this other team, and give feedback and be like the executive in the room. I enjoy all those roles, and the fact that I jump from one to the next it makes my job very exciting and always feeling fresh. I’m never bored.”

While Druckmann is credited as Creative Director on both The Last of Us games and Intergalactic, he seems be embracing a more hands-off role with this new project. Having multiple teams develop separate games alongside each other is nothing new for studios as large as Naughty Dog. It was recently working on a The Last of Us multiplayer game before that was cancelled in 2023.

Perhaps Druckmann is overseeing the revival of one of the studio’s dormant franchises — Naughty Dog was known for the Crash Bandicoot and Jax and Dexter series before it pivoted its focus to The Last of Us and Uncharted. Speaking of which… could an Uncharted 5 be on the way?

2016’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End closed out Nathan Drake’s journey as a swashbuckling treasure hunter, though it kept the door open for more adventures through the introduction of his and Elena Fisher’s daughter, Cassie. Kaitlyn Dever portrayed Cassie in Uncharted 4’s epilogue and currently stars as Abby in season 2 of The Last of Us.

A 2023 PS5 ad ignited speculation the Uncharted series was due to return. It featured live-action clips emulating Sony’s robust first-party lineup, and one Uncharted-like clip showed a young woman holding a torch and exploring a cave in search of some sort of artifact. Job listings at that time sought talent for a separate studio “co-developing an exciting new project with Naughty Dog in a beloved franchise” (via VGC), though it’s not confirmed if that “beloved franchise” is Uncharted or something else.

We likely won’t know what Naughty Dog is working on for some time, if it gets formally revealed at all; remember, plenty of games get cancelled before the public even knew they existed.

Naughty Dog working on second game alongside Intergalactic, Neil Druckmann confirms

by admin May 20, 2025

It feels like we’ve only just been introduced to Naughty Dog’s sci-fi action-adventure Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, but studio boss Neil Druckmann has now confirmed there’s a second game in development at the studio.

Druckmann shared the news in conversation with the Press X to Continue podcast, explaining that alongside Intergalactic – where’s he’s serving as writer and creative director – “there’s another game that’s being worked on at Naughty Dog where I am more of a producer role.”

“And I get to mentor and watch this other team, and give feedback and be, like, the executive in the room,” he continued. “I enjoy all those roles, and the fact that I jump between one to the next, it makes my job very exciting and always feeling fresh. I’m never bored.”

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet was unveiled in December.Watch on YouTube

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard multiple games are in development at Naughty Dog; the studio said it had “more than one ambitious, brand-new single player game” in the works back in 2023, when it announced the cancellation of The Last of Us Online. Druckmann’s latest statement is, however, the first confirmation since then that multiple projects are still underway.

As to what this second project might be, Druckmann offered no hints, but it’s possible it’s being helmed by Uncharted: The Lost Legacy director Shaun Escayg – who rejoined Naughty Dog back in 2021 after serving as creative director on Crystal Dynamics’ Marvel Avengers.

Druckmann has, of course, been teasing a third The Last of Us game in recent years, but he seemingly backtracked on that in March, telling fans, “Don’t bet on there being more.” For now, his main focus appears to be Intergalactic, which is currently expected to arrive in 2027. And while details on the game are currently limited, Druckmann recently named another actor who’s been cast in Intergalactic after their appearance in The Last of Us’ television show.
