The Division 2: Survivors Announced, Ubisoft Says It’s “Your Baby”

Ubisoft isn’t done supporting The Division 2 just yet, as the company has announced The Division 2: Survivors, which is described as an “updated take” on the game’s survival-extraction elements. Ubisoft also shared the latest update on The Division: Resurgence.

Development on Survivors is only just beginning, Ubisoft said, noting that The Division veteran Magnus Jansen is leading production as its creative director.

Not a whole lot is known about The Division 2: Survivors, but Ubisoft said it wants to develop it alongside the community. It is “as much your baby as it is ours,” executive producer Julian Gerighty said. “We strive for transparency during its development.”

“Clear communication and community involvement are a focus as we build the new experience, and we will be closely involving you as we move forward on the development journey,” Gerighty added.

Beyond The Division 2: Survivors, Ubisoft announced that it will launch a new test for the mobile game, The Division: Resurgence, in September. A closed test will take place on iOS and Android, with more testing to follow. Ubisoft has held tests for the game since 2023, and you can sign up for this newest test on Ubisoft’s website.

The Division: Resurgence takes place in Manhattan and its story takes place between the events of The Division and The Division 2. The game is a free-to-play RPG shooter that aims to offer “the same gameplay experience” as the console/PC edition but adapted for mobile.

In addition to The Division 2: Survivors and The Division: Resurgence, Ubisoft is working on The Division 3. It was announced in 2023 with little fanfare and we still don’t know much about it.

The Division 2 is currently available on Xbox Game Pass, and not just for Ultimate subscribers–Game Pass Standard members can play it through their membership as well.

The Division 2 kicks off 10th anniversary year with The Division 2: Survivors, “an updated take on the survival extraction experience”

The Division 2: Survivors is “an updated take on the survival extraction experience” coming to The Division 2.

At a panel at Gamescom, the company confirmed that though development is currently “in the early stages” under the watchful eye of creative director and “veteran of the Division from the early days of the original game”, Magnus Jansén, the team is keen to involve the community from the off.

“The Division 2: Survivors is as much your baby as it is ours, and we strive for transparency during its development. Clear communication and community involvement are a focus as we build the new experience, and we will be closely involving you as we move forward on the development journey,” said executive producer, Julian Gerighty.

There was no in-game artwork or screenshots to share, but Ubisoft did reveal a handful of concept art pieces, which you can see below.

We don’t quite know when to expect it – it’s still labelled as TBA for now – but we did get a little update on what else players can expect over the course of this year and next:

The Division Resurgence – the free-to-play mobile RPG shooter that picks up a few months after the events of the original game – is also looking for participants for closed tests on both iOS and Android. Ubisoft says it offers “the same gameplay experience as the Division games adapted to mobile gaming”, and “with a familiar map updated to reflect the passage of time, the Division Resurgence will bridge the narrative gap between the Division 1 and 2, adding to the existing lore with additional story beats over time.”

The Division Resurgence takes players back to the streets of Manhattan, set several months after the conclusion of the Division 1. Softbank reportedly considered buying Intel’s foundry division outright before investing $2 billion into the company as equity

SoftBank today announced its intent to purchase a historic $2 billion worth of Intel shares—a roughly 2% stake—making it one of the largest shareholders of the American chipmaker. However, the Financial Times reports that just days before the deal was inked, Softbank actually considered buying Intel’s foundry division outright.

This follows another unprecedented report that the White House is considering a 10% stake in Intel, utilizing grants from the CHIPS Act and converting them into equity.

Intel received that CHIPS Act money on the promise of never spinning off the fabs the funds directly impacted, as they serve an important geopolitical role in the race for bleeding-edge semiconductors. Intel is one of the last companies in the cutting-edge process race with TSMC, whose roots in Taiwan have provoked long-simmering concerns about its vulnerability and the stability of leading-edge semiconductor supply in the event that China should invade the island in pursuit of reunification.

How Rematch ranks work: What you need to rank up in each league and division

When you launch Rematch for the first time, a little pop-up will warn you that the game is “best experienced with a controller.” After ignoring that to see how it felt with my beloved mouse and keyboard, I’m not sure I agree; while the mouse controls take some getting used to, they may be preferable depending on your comfort level with thumbstick aiming.

A controller gives you more freedom of movement and more intuitive passing

The reasons to use a gamepad for Rematch are the usual ones. With an analog stick, you can easily move around and aim passes in 360 degrees instead of combining mouse movements with WASD’s 8 possible directions, and the button setup is a little more intuitive.

For instance, on a gamepad you can use the buttons to tap, light tap, and push the ball in combination with the right bumper to do lob versions of those same moves. On a keyboard, all of those commands and their lobbed versions are different buttons by default, so it requires a bit more memorization unless you’re willing to tinker with the keybinds yourself.

Passing is also significantly easier if you’re using a thumbstick. When passing in Rematch, you hold down the appropriate button for your setup and have a split second to aim it. On a controller, you’re doing that with the left stick, the same input you move with, and on a keyboard, you’re dragging the mouse in the direction you want to pass while moving with WASD.

On a thumbstick, I feel like I know exactly where the ball is headed; it’s going the exact direction my character is, and any adjustments are easily made with the stick by flicking at the exact angle I want. Movement on the mouse is far twitchier, and there’s currently no option to choose a direction for your pass with WASD; even if you’re strafing left and right, the ball will always head the direction your camera is facing unless you adjust with the mouse.

…But precise shooting is far easier with a mouse

The reason to consider playing Rematch with a keyboard and mouse is down to the shooting.

You shoot by aiming a center-of-camera crosshair at your target and holding down either the right trigger or the left mouse button; as you approach the ball, you have a brief moment to shape your shot. Tricky shots that mislead enemy goalies are essential to scoring, and a mouse is simply far nimbler at swerving the camera to just the right spot.

You might find lining up a shot with the right stick easier if you’ve used a gamepad all your life, but I find it easier to use a mouse for the same reason I do in the vast majority of FPSes or for pitching in Super Mega Baseball. A stick is great for 3D movement, but shooting is just about clean and simple crosshair movement: that thing mouses are built to do.

There are a number of keybind presets that take advantage of extra mouse buttons, so don’t be afraid to bust out the old MMO mouse and fiddle around with the settings. I’ll be sticking with the default mouse and keyboard setup myself, but freeplay has been immensely helpful for tuning my preferred sensitivities and trying different binds.

Splitgate 2 director apologises for causing “division” following controversial Summer Game Fest appearance

Splitgate 2 game director Ian Proulx has apologised for causing “division in the community” following his controversial Summer Game Fest appearance, in which he wore a MAGA-style “Make FPS Great Again” hat while onstage.

Proulx’s Summer Game Fest segment last Friday almost immediately drew criticism from viewers; some felt using the high-profile platform to attack another developer’s game – he announced he was “tired of playing the same Call of Duty every year” – was tasteless, but it was his hat that seemed to cause most controversy.

Its “Make FPS Great Again” logo clearly invoked divisive US president Donald Trump’s notorious “Make America Great Again” slogan, and now – after initially refusing to apologise for wearing it – Proulx has acknowledged the choice, while ‘not political’, was ill-advised.

“It is really freaking hard as an independent studio to break through the noise,” he explained in a video posted on social media. “We saw it at the TGAs; we had this great trailer and there’s 50 other great trailers, and it didn’t really have an impact. And so at our biggest stage, coming out of beta, we needed something to grab attention and… this is what we came up with.”

“We did not intend for this to be taken in any political way whatsoever,” he continued. “Obviously I knew there would be some level of controversy, but we really saw this as a meme that was stating our truth. Which is we do want to improve this genre, we are disappointed with the state of the genre. And so we took [the slogan] as a meme that we thought would not be nearly as negatively received as the way it was. And so I want to apologise.”

“And the reason I am sorry is because of what this has done to the community. The most important thing to me right now is I want to have an amazing community… I hate seeing division. And that’s what I’m seeing now, on both sides. There’s division in the community, and for that I am truly sorry… I do stand by the [face value] intent of this, which is… we do want to improve this genre… But I also understand that it’s not just about intent, it’s about impact, and the platform that we have had has had a negative impact, and for that I’m truly sorry.”

Proulx’s Summer Game Fest appearance isn’t the only controversy Splitgate 2 has faced in recent days, however. Fans lambasted the free-to-play shooter over the weekend after developer 1047 Games released a cosmetic bundle priced $80 USD, supposedly discounted from $145. In response, the studio slashed that to $40 and reduced prices across the store, pledging to “double down on being community first and listening to you guys.”

Ethereum Foundation Restructures R&D Division, Plans ‘Rethink’ on Design and Development

The Ethereum Foundation is restructuring its Protocol R&D teams under the “Protocol” brand, a new initiative umbrella.
Three strategic initiatives are expected to target scaling Layer 1, scaling blobs, and enhancing the user experience.
Some team members won’t continue with the foundation as the organization streamlines operations.

Less than a month after the Pectra Upgrade, the Ethereum Foundation believes that the world’s second-largest crypto, both as a technology and as an ecosystem, is approaching major breakthroughs with higher stakes for a broader audience.

Yet those stakes could be at risk if the people steering it are entrenched in what it calls a messy process: shipping protocol.

“We must rethink our current approach to designing, developing, and stewarding the protocol,” the foundation wrote Monday, announcing the restructuring of its Protocol Research & Development teams.

The move is set to consolidate development efforts under a new “Protocol” division, focusing on three immediate goals. The foundation touts the move as a way to “respond proactively” to demands that it claims are “hard to articulate and even harder to fulfill.”

The overhaul divides teams into three initiatives: scaling the main blockchain (Layer 1), scaling blobs for data storage, and improving the user experience.

Each initiative is assigned dedicated leadership: Tim Beiko and Ansgar Dietrichs are responsible for L1 scaling, Alex Stokes and Francesco D’Amato will oversee blob scaling, while Barnabé Monnot and Josh Rudolf are tasked with improving user experience.

But not everyone is staying and making the cut for Protocol. Some members “won’t be continuing with the Ethereum Foundation,” it said, while encouraging ecosystem projects to recruit departing talent.

Strategic roles

The three teams will be supported by Dankrad Feist, a prominent researcher and cryptographer renowned for “Danksharding,” a blockchain optimization process named after him. Feist will work as strategic advisor to all tracks.

Last year, Feist was involved in a conflict of interest controversy, when he, alongside fellow core developer Justin Drake, confirmed they received tokens for their advisory relationship with EigenLayer, a restaking protocol for Ethereum.

“It is clear that relying on culture and individual judgment has not been sufficient, and we have been working on a formal policy to address this,” Aya Miyaguchi, the foundation’s former Executive Director, said at the time.

Still, the Ethereum Foundation’s efforts at restructuring with Protocol aim to bridge a perceived gap between research and actual implementation.

Previous upgrades, such as Pectra, faced several hurdles: testnet failures earlier this year delayed the rollout by weeks as developers scrambled to patch bugs.

Now, through Protocol, the foundation is attempting to show “the world is ready for the world computer.”

OlliOlli World and Rollerdrome are back on Steam after being delisted 4 months ago when 2K sold off Private Division

Four months after they were unceremoniously delisted, Roll7’s stylish skate games Rollerdrome and OlliOlli World are both back on Steam.

Rollerdrome and OlliOlli World were removed from Steam in February, a move we assumed at the time was the result of the Private Division drama at Take-Two Interactive: After some extended cuteness and difficulty following May 2024 reports that Roll7 and the Private Division publishing label were being closed, Take-Two finally confirmed in November 2024 that Roll7, along with Kerbal Space Program 2 studio Intercept Games, had been closed, and that Private Division was sold off.

The sale of Private Division included “substantially all of Private Division’s live and unreleased titles,” Take-Two said at the time. But it turns out the sale did not include OlliOlli World or Rollerdrome, as both have returned to Steam and are now listed as being published by 2K, a subsidiary of Take-Two.
