Nintendo rebrands transmedia division from Warpstar to Nintendo Stars

by admin September 1, 2025

Nintendo has rebranded its transmedia division, changing the name from Warpstar Inc. to Nintendo Stars.

Warpstar is a consolidated subsidiary launched just last April to manage its film, TV, and other transmedia business. Now, however, in a memo posted to the official Nintendo Japan website, the company said it was “strengthening” the “ancillary use” of films featuring Nintendo IP and expanding it to also encompass live events and merchandise, “through project development, licensing, and other means.”

“By implementing and licensing various ancillary uses in films, Nintendo Stars Inc. aims to familiarize people around the world with Nintendo IP and provide new ways to experience it,” the statement added (thanks, GameDeveloper).

The press release also hinted that Nintendo Stars as it’s now known, will continue its development of the Kirby franchise, by “utilizing the know-how cultivated in this business,” and “expand[ing] the number of people who have access to Nintendo IP through cooperation with partners around the world, and strengthen the relationship between Nintendo and its customers.”

The statement also reminded investors that there’s a new animated film based on Super Mario Bros. scheduled to release on April 3, 2026, and a live-action film based The Legend of Zelda slated to debut on May 7, 2027.

Curveball Leisure launches full-service publishing division

by admin September 1, 2025

Welsh distributor Curveball Leisure has launched Curveball Games, a game publishing division aimed at supporting “unique” digital and physical titles from indie to AA studios across the globe.

Announced on September 1, the new publisher is helmed by senior publishing manager Ed Gregory, formerly of PlayStation and PQube.

Alongside Gregory, the Curveball Games team has recently brought on board product marketing manager James Megretton (formerly of Sumo Digital) and community manager Richard Flint (formerly of PQube), with the publisher stating that “further expansion of the team is anticipated moving into 2026.”

“The industry’s faced real turbulence over the past two years, and whilst there’s evidently still some bumpy roads ahead, we are still seeing some nimble green shoots of recovery,” said Ed Gregory.

“This moment calls for a fresh approach, and that’s where Curveball Games comes in. Passion drives this industry, but studios need more than passion to thrive.

“Our role as a publisher is to champion developers, nurture creativity, and provide the support they truly need. With our team’s experience and the backing of the wider Curveball group, we feel we’re in a strong position to help surface the next wave of standout talent.”

While Curveball Leisure and its retail division, The Game Collection, have their headquarters in Swansea in Wales, the publishing division will work out of Cardiff.

The publisher already has established partnerships with Wales Interactive, Top Hat Studios, Duality Games, Reignite Group, British game designer Kevin Toms, and Riddlebit Software on several future physical and digital releases.

“Over the past 20 years, Curveball has grown from humble beginnings into one of Wales’ growing success stories, rooted in the physical media market, a space where we’ve built a strong global presence and remain deeply invested,” said Andrew Naunton, Curveball CCO.

“The launch of Curveball Games marks a new chapter for us. It’s a natural evolution that allows us to broaden our reach and bring fresh energy to our brand.

“We’re combining our proven infrastructure, industry knowledge, and passion for great games to empower developers with the resources, transparency, and collaboration they need to thrive.

“We know this is a bold step, and we’re in it for the full ride. From resourcing to investment, we’re dedicated to building enduring partnerships that elevate creativity and provide everything needed to make both our titles and Curveball Games a success.”

The Division 2: Survivors Announced, Ubisoft Says It’s “Your Baby”

by admin August 24, 2025

Ubisoft isn’t done supporting The Division 2 just yet, as the company has announced The Division 2: Survivors, which is described as an “updated take” on the game’s survival-extraction elements. Ubisoft also shared the latest update on The Division: Resurgence.

Development on Survivors is only just beginning, Ubisoft said, noting that The Division veteran Magnus Jansen is leading production as its creative director.

Not a whole lot is known about The Division 2: Survivors, but Ubisoft said it wants to develop it alongside the community. It is “as much your baby as it is ours,” executive producer Julian Gerighty said. “We strive for transparency during its development.”

“Clear communication and community involvement are a focus as we build the new experience, and we will be closely involving you as we move forward on the development journey,” Gerighty added.

Beyond The Division 2: Survivors, Ubisoft announced that it will launch a new test for the mobile game, The Division: Resurgence, in September. A closed test will take place on iOS and Android, with more testing to follow. Ubisoft has held tests for the game since 2023, and you can sign up for this newest test on Ubisoft’s website.

The Division: Resurgence takes place in Manhattan and its story takes place between the events of The Division and The Division 2. The game is a free-to-play RPG shooter that aims to offer “the same gameplay experience” as the console/PC edition but adapted for mobile.

In addition to The Division 2: Survivors and The Division: Resurgence, Ubisoft is working on The Division 3. It was announced in 2023 with little fanfare and we still don’t know much about it.

The Division 2 is currently available on Xbox Game Pass, and not just for Ultimate subscribers–Game Pass Standard members can play it through their membership as well.

The Division 2 kicks off 10th anniversary year with The Division 2: Survivors, “an updated take on the survival extraction experience”

by admin August 23, 2025

The Division 2: Survivors is “an updated take on the survival extraction experience” coming to The Division 2.

At a panel at Gamescom, the company confirmed that though development is currently “in the early stages” under the watchful eye of creative director and “veteran of the Division from the early days of the original game”, Magnus Jansén, the team is keen to involve the community from the off.

“The Division 2: Survivors is as much your baby as it is ours, and we strive for transparency during its development. Clear communication and community involvement are a focus as we build the new experience, and we will be closely involving you as we move forward on the development journey,” said executive producer, Julian Gerighty.

There was no in-game artwork or screenshots to share, but Ubisoft did reveal a handful of concept art pieces, which you can see below.

We don’t quite know when to expect it – it’s still labelled as TBA for now – but we did get a little update on what else players can expect over the course of this year and next:

Interested in trying before you buy and maybe giving a little feedback as you go? Ubisoft is looking to refresh its Elite Task Program, so sign up now if you’re a “committed player [looking] to engage directly with the development team and assist in guiding the future of the Division”.

The Division Resurgence – the free-to-play mobile RPG shooter that picks up a few months after the events of the original game – is also looking for participants for closed tests on both iOS and Android. Ubisoft says it offers “the same gameplay experience as the Division games adapted to mobile gaming”, and “with a familiar map updated to reflect the passage of time, the Division Resurgence will bridge the narrative gap between the Division 1 and 2, adding to the existing lore with additional story beats over time.”

Ubisoft announces two updates for Division games

by admin August 23, 2025

The Division 2: Survivors

The Division 2: Survivors will bring an updated take on the survival extraction experience to The Division 2!

Development of The Division 2: Survivors is currently in the early stages, under the leadership of Magnus Jansén as Creative Director – a veteran of the Division from the early days of the original game.

“The Division 2: Survivors is as much your baby as it is ours, and we strive for transparency during its development. Clear communication and community involvement are a focus as we build the new experience, and we will be closely involving you as we move forward on the development journey,” said Julian Gerighty, Executive Producer.

The Division Resurgence

We also shared details on the upcoming the Division Resurgence: a free-to-play mobile RPG shooter MMO, offering the same gameplay experience as the Division games adapted to mobile gaming.

The Division Resurgence takes players back to the streets of Manhattan, set several months after the conclusion of the Division 1. With a familiar map updated to reflect the passage of time, the Division Resurgence will bridge the narrative gap between the Division 1 and 2, adding to the existing lore with additional story beats over time.

Community is key, and so we will be firing up our testing phases in September. A closed test on both iOS and Android will allow us to gather your feedback and insights, with further test sessions to follow. Head to the Division Resurgence webpage for more info on how to join in.

Softbank reportedly considered buying Intel’s foundry division outright before investing $2 billion into the company as equity

by admin August 20, 2025

SoftBank today announced its intent to purchase a historic $2 billion worth of Intel shares—a roughly 2% stake—making it one of the largest shareholders of the American chipmaker. However, the Financial Times reports that just days before the deal was inked, Softbank actually considered buying Intel’s foundry division outright.

This follows another unprecedented report that the White House is considering a 10% stake in Intel, utilizing grants from the CHIPS Act and converting them into equity.

Intel received that CHIPS Act money on the promise of never spinning off the fabs the funds directly impacted, as they serve an important geopolitical role in the race for bleeding-edge semiconductors. Intel is one of the last companies in the cutting-edge process race with TSMC, whose roots in Taiwan have provoked long-simmering concerns about its vulnerability and the stability of leading-edge semiconductor supply in the event that China should invade the island in pursuit of reunification.

Intel has been struggling for years, and the current CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, was installed earlier this year to turn the company’s fortunes around. Quickly, Tan shifted Intel’s focus to save costs and stick to its core business. Despite efforts to bolster homegrown chipmaking, Tan has faced intense scrutiny, mostly due to his former ties with China, which even led to calls for his resignation by President Trump.

Of course, the relationship between Trump and Tan has done a 180 following a meeting in which the President was apparently won over by Tan’s “amazing story.”

(Image credit: Getty Images / Bloomberg)

SoftBank is a Japanese financial institution that owns a majority stake in semiconductor IP developer Arm and already has close ties with the Trump administration thanks to the Stargate project. For those out of the loop, that’s a $500 billion promise to build AI infrastructure in the U.S. that would purportedly create 100,000 jobs, bolster American chipmaking, and make the country the clear leader in bleeding-edge AI applications.

SoftBank already owns 40% of that project and is now set to own 2% of Intel, marking a significant investment in the promise of a turnaround for the beleaguered company and its geopolitical importance in keeping bleeding-edge semiconductors local to America.

Lip-Bu Tan also served as a board member for SoftBank till 2022, and left amidst the company’s own set of challenges following a few miscalculated investments.

Years later, Son is now investing in Intel. “Masa and I have worked closely together for decades, and I appreciate the confidence he has placed in Intel with this investment,” said Tan. This endeavor aligns with SoftBank’s broader strategies geared toward expanding its presence in the AI market and gaining a foothold in emerging technologies.

Previously, SoftBank invested heavily in Nvidia, owning about 4.9% of the company, but it sold those shares in 2019 when Nvidia’s share price was in a downturn. After losing out on billions in gains in recent years when Nvidia began its meteoric rise, Softbank increased its investment in Nvidia to $3 billion at the beginning of 2025.

As part of its Project Izanagi initiative, Softbank reportedly explored fabricating an AI accelerator of its own with Intel in 2024, but due to a lack of confidence in Intel meeting its performance and volume projections, Softbank pivoted to TSMC for its foundry needs. SoftBank also acquired Graphcore for its AI accelerator IP as part of its larger strategy.

Right now, Intel’s foundry business is struggling as its next-gen 18A and 14A process nodes are on the chopping block (the former for external customers) if it can’t secure enough customer commitments. Intel has, however, reiterated that it is its own biggest customer and that the company is committed to chip manufacturing.

SoftBank’s $2 billion stake in Intel demonstrates a great deal of trust in Tan’s leadership, but Son’s history of questionable investment choices means a resurgent Intel is far from a sure thing. Intel has also lost out to Nvidia in the AI race and continues to lose ground in both the consumer x86 and server markets to AMD. Whether Trump’s and Son’s interventions in the fate of the company are enough to save it remains to be seen.
