Metal Detectorist Discovers Rare Boat Grave Containing Viking Woman and Her Dog

by admin June 15, 2025

The saying goes that a dog is a man’s best friend, but an archaeological excavation in Norway proves that women care about their four-legged companions just as much as men do, even 1,100 years ago.

Archaeologists from the Arctic University Museum of Norway have revealed a 10th-century Viking boat grave on the Norwegian island of Senja. The buried individual is likely a woman who belonged to an elite class, as Science Norway first reported. Most notably, the team found a dog carefully buried at her feet.

“It appears to have been placed with real care,” Anja Roth Niemi, a museum archaeologist who presumably took part in the excavation, told Science Norway. “There are stories of prominent people doing everything in their power when their dog became ill. So even back then, people had deep bonds with their animals.”

A metal detectorist first discovered brooches and bone remains at the site just 7.9 inches (20 centimeters) beneath the ground two years ago. Suspecting the presence of a Viking woman’s burial, the Arctic University Museum of Norway applied for permission to investigate and were finally able to conduct a proper excavation when the landowner decided to expand a garage on the property.

“After the upper layer of soil was removed, it became clear that this was a boat grave,” the museum wrote in a social media post. “The decayed wood from the boat was visible as a thin dark strip in the subsoil, with the site where the bowl brooches were found approximately in the middle.”

The work revealed a 17.7-foot-long (5.4-meter) boat in which a Viking woman and a dog were buried alongside objects associated with elite burials, including bone or amber beads, a pendant, and ornate brooches, according to Science Norway. This is not the first time archaeologists have found dog remains alongside Viking ones, but it provides further proof that dogs were prized companions even 1,100 years ago.

The brooches’ design—oval with silver thread—helped the team date the grave to approximately 900 to 950 CE, as reported by Science Norway. They also indicate that the buried individual was a woman, given that oval brooches were usually Viking women’s jewelry, though only bone analysis can confirm this beyond a doubt. Furthermore, the boat grave and grave goods altogether suggest that the woman was a high-class individual.

“Only the elite would receive a burial like this,” Niemi told Science Norway. Niemi and her colleagues also uncovered agricultural tools and textile instruments, the latter of which further associate the burial with Viking womanhood. Further analyses will confirm the individual’s sex and shed light on her age, height, diet, and health, while also offering more insight into Viking burial traditions. Moreover, after discovering another brooch not too far from the burial, the archaeologists hope to continue investigating the area in the hopes of finding another grave.

According to the museum’s post, the last days of the excavation were spent “recording all the contents of the grave and securing them for transport and storage until they can be examined in detail under controlled conditions at the laboratory in Tromsø.”

It is my hope that they keep the woman and her pet together in Tromsø, so that the dog can continue guarding its owner in the afterlife as it likely did when they were both alive.

Elon Musk discovers Trump doesn’t stay bought

by admin June 5, 2025

I have been watching, with some grim amusement, Elon Musk discovering the limits of being just another political donor. While he was at DOGE, he literally could control the Treasury and DOD — he effectively had the IT reins of the entire country, and could simply gut things he hated at will. There was a price for that: it destroyed what was left of his reputation. But it was real, true power — being able to stop payments at will makes you more powerful than the president.

So much for that. These days, Musk is reduced to begging his followers on X to call their senators and congressmen [sic, obviously] to vote down the Big Beautiful Bill. His nominal reason is that Donald Trump’s budget plan will increase the deficit, but reports indicate that Musk is annoyed an EV credit is getting cut. That makes it harder to sell Teslas in an environment where it’s already hard to sell Teslas. Also, Musk may be annoyed that he didn’t get to stay past his statutory limit as an unpaid advisor and that the FAA isn’t using Starlink, according to Axios.

Even less powerful enemies can lead to political problems, which is why Musk doesn’t get his pet boy in NASA

The cracks have been showing in the MAGA-tech alliance for some time now. When Scott Bessent got Musk’s IRS pick ejected in April, that was notable. (Bessent’s deputy now runs the IRS.) Musk wasn’t politically savvy enough to get Bessent on his side before installing his pick; an end-run like that is insulting and Musk had been making enemies. Take, for instance, Marco Rubio, who was furious when Musk destroyed USAID — that was Rubio’s department and getting rid of it cut his power. Sean Duffy, the reality TV star who is for some reason running the Department of Transportation, had to intervene to stop DOGE from firing air traffic controllers while the lack of air traffic controllers remains a hot-button issue.

These men should not have been especially difficult to finesse, but then Musk is known for his bull-in-a-china-shop approach. It is rare that a person in a position of power — a cabinet seat, say — willingly gives up even an inch of leverage. Making enemies of Bessent, Rubio, and Duffy was a strategic error.

Even less powerful enemies can lead to political problems, which is why Musk doesn’t get his pet boy in NASA now. Jared Isaacman was due to receive his final confirmation vote in the Senate when Trump abruptly withdrew his nomination for head of the aerospace agency. That was reportedly because Musk had beef with Sergio Gor, the head of the White House Presidential Personnel Office — basically the lead recruiter for government jobs. The moment Musk was no longer in the actual White House, Gor dropped the blade.

Still, Trump isn’t publicly chastising Musk

Silicon Valley is still entwined with the government — Musk’s cronies, including the guy who calls himself Big Balls, now have permanent jobs. Associates of Peter Thiel, Palmer Luckey, and David Sacks all have jobs in the administration; the vice president owes his entire political career to his sugar daddy Thiel. But when David Sacks gets on X to argue with Marjorie Taylor Greene about the AI provision in the budget bill, that suggests a shocking lack of leverage. Sacks was a major Republican fundraiser and is a literal advisor to the president; shouldn’t he be able to pick up a phone and get what he wants?

Instead, his podcast All-In is getting the exclusive bitch session from Isaacman, the NASA administrator who wasn’t. Great for content, I guess, but not real power.

I’m a little surprised Musk isn’t threatening to primary people over the bill. Maybe that’s happening in private, I don’t know. But it could also reflect that Musk’s money is, at times, a political liability. When Musk dropped $20 million on his preferred Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate, that candidate got blown out of the water. Musk’s increasingly toxic reputation may make his money less welcome.

Still, Trump isn’t publicly chastising Musk, which is unusual. Maybe that’s because he’s waiting on a $100 million check to his political action committee, per The Wall Street Journal. Or maybe it’s because Musk is particularly close to Katie and Stephen Miller, two major Trump administration power players.

The basic truth of Donald Trump’s entire career, starting in real estate, is that he will fuck over anyone who does a deal with him as soon as it benefits him to do so. (Just ask Michael Cohen!) You can buy him, but he won’t stay bought. You have to keep an eye on him, keep managing him, as Stephen Miller knows well. Musk left the White House to tend to his own reputation, leaving his enemies behind to whisper in the president’s ear. Sure, he’s still got people in the administration, but it’s hard to effectively rule from the shadows when you’ve created a shocking amount of tension with the actual presidential staff. Musk set his own companies on fire, and this is what he’s gotten in return. What did you get for your money, honey? How do you get your kicks?

Geoguessr pro discovers “10/10” pizza spot gatekept by New York local

by admin June 3, 2025

Geoguessr pro Rainbolt felt “challenged” by a local New Yorker who posted about their new favorite pizza joint without naming it in order to keep the masses at bay.

Trevor Rainbolt is a popular online content creator best known for playing Geogessr, an online game where you’re dropped in the middle of an unknown area in Google maps and must guess where you’re at based on nothing but context clues.

Rainbolt has become famous for managing to deduce near-exact locations in mere seconds based on things as obscure as the color of the sky. In fact, he even managed to guess the spot where a man had proposed to his wife in Japan back in 2009.

Lately, Rainbolt has started exposing folks’ favorite food spots that they like to gatekeep in order to avoid dealing with long lines, should they get too popular.

One X user named Adam Fern bemoaned this exact scenario after Barstool’s Dave Portnoy ‘ruined’ their top pizza joint with his viral one-bite food reviews, showing a line down the block.

Rainbolt uncovers foodie’s favorite pizza joint after Dave Portnoy ‘ruined’ his last spot

Luckily, Fern managed to find a new favorite, which they posted about without dropping its name — but they forgot that Rainbolt exists.

“New pizza spot opened near me and honestly it’s about as good as it gets. 10/10. And it’s all mine now until the masses discover it.”

And it’s all mine for now until the masses discover it.

The influencer was tagged by a fan and viewed it as a “challenge” to uncover the spot himself, and, unsurprisingly, it didn’t take long.

Rainbolt used two clues in the post to help him deduce the restaurant — “new pizza spot” and “opened near me.” After doing some digging to find the poster’s approximate location from their social media history, he was able to look up new restaurants in the area that had interiors that matched the photo they’d used in their tweet.

Sure enough, Rainbolt managed to find it — Brooklyn DOP FastLife Pizza on 995A Fulton Street in Brooklyn, New York.

“There’s nothing personal against this,” Rainbolt said. “I honestly just took this as a challenge. It’s probably worth the opportunity to give this pizza place a shout out, because it does look like good pizza.”

Fern has since responded to Rainbolt’s video, admitting that he finds it “beyond amusing to me that strangers cares what I have to say.”

The universe is screaming at me that I need to capitalize on my love of pizza somehow.

First Portnoy, then NY Post, now I’ve been ‘exposed’ by the 1 and only @georainbolt

This isn’t the first time Rainbolt has broken a foodie’s heart by exposing their secret spot; in 2023, he uncovered a TikToker’s favorite bagel place in a video that went viral on social media, much to their chagrin.
