The CDC’s Nightmare Interim Director Is a Peter Thiel Pal

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is in chaotic disarray, as a slew of resignations and an unprecedented walkout of staff have roiled the agency. At the center of the controversy is the CDC’s weirdo director, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose most recent contribution to public health dialogue was a bizarre rant about what passes through his mind as he stares at children. No wonder longtime agency staffers are losing their minds.

Now, in a development that is sure to help (*sarcasm*), Jim O’Neill, Kennedy’s deputy secretary, has been selected to take over at the agency. People are freaking out about O’Neill’s nomination because, well, he’s a freak—or, at the very least, he is anomalous in regards to his espoused beliefs and career experience and how little they seem to match his new job. But, as Stat reports, the sure-fire tell that this man waves a freak flag is his deep connections to PayPal co-founder and all-around weirdo Peter Thiel.

One of the first things you notice when you check out O’Neill’s LinkedIn is just how much time he’s spent working for organizations that were created by rightwing billionaire Peter Thiel. Between 2008 and 2012, O’Neill served as the managing director of Clarium Capital Management, one of Thiel’s first hedge funds. After that, O’Neill spent nearly a decade as the managing director of Mithril Capital Management, one of Thiel’s venture capital firms, which has been responsible for funding companies like Thiel’s defense contractor, Palantir (which is also doing a lot of work for the Trump administration right now).

O’Neill was also previously a board member of Thiel’s Seasteading Institute, an organization that is devoted to the creation of autonomous floating cities that are governed by private entities rather than traditional (i.e., democratic) governments. A picture on the group’s website from 2014 shows O’Neill hanging out with dead-eyed libertarian operative Grover Norquist at Burning Man. The Seasteading Institute is run by Milton Friedman’s grandson, Patri Friedman, who is also a point person for the “Network State” movement, which Thiel is also all wrapped up in.

Frankly, O’Neill’s dense ties to Thiel are one of the less worrying things about him. Much more concerning is the wealth of information about him online that would give any sane person pause when considering whether to let him run a public health agency. For one thing, there’s an old YouTube video of him talking about how we should open up organ donation to the “free market” (there’s nothing wrong with incentivizing people to but and sell organs, right?), and he’s also a fan of Silicon Valley’s trendy new life-extension sciences (he has shared kind words about the penis-shocking, teen-blood-transfusing health guru Bryan Johnson). During the pandemic, he is said to have advocated for the use of alternative medications, like hydroxychloroquine and Joe Rogan’s favorite, ivermectin. The Seasteading Institute is run by Milton Friedman’s grandson, Patri Friedman, who is also a point person for the “Network State” movement. O’Neill also reportedly advocated for dispensing with the FDA’s mandate that drugs be deemed “effective” before they’re sold to the public. In 2014, he told a biotech group: “Let people start using them [the drugs], at their own risk.” And, of course, he wants healthcare to be a “free market” enterprise.

In short, he sounds like a complete and total nightmare and, also, the exact kind of person that RFK would want to run the CDC.

Unlike his boss, O’Neill is not a complete stranger to government, although this should offer little comfort. During the George W. Bush administration, he served in several roles at the HHS, even rising as high as principal associate deputy secretary. In that role, between 2007 and 2008, he is said to have focused his attention on food safety regulations. Then, during Trump’s first term in office, O’Neill was mulled as a potential choice to head the Food and Drug Administration. When it originally broke that Trump was considering O’Neill for this post back in 2016, Gizmodo wrote an article entitled: “Trump is Considering an Insane Silicon Valley Libertarian to Head the FDA.” At the time, much controversy was stirred up by the mere suggestion that O’Neill take the FDA role, and eventually, Trump dropped the idea. Now, unfortunately, O’Neill is going to be running an agency nearly twice as large and significantly more important, at least for the time being. Gizmodo reached out to the government for more information.

It really sucks” Battlefield 6 technical director bummed out about those unable to play due to Secure Boot requirement, believes anti-cheat cat-and-mouse game will “never end

The Battlefield 6 open betas proved exceptionally popular earlier this month for many, but a significant portion of the PC playerbase were met with a daunting wall to play thanks to the game’s Secure Boot requirement. This technical hurdle is in place for the game’s anti-cheat, a kernel-level bit of software dedicated to curbing a rising cheating problem across online FPS games.

Alas, the Battlefield 6 beta still had a few cheaters running around and ruining things for their fellow players. To find out more about whether Battlefield 6’s Javalin anti-cheat was successful in the eyes of EA, Eurogamer sat down to talk to Battlefield 6 technical director Christian Buhl. Buhl would express pride at the anti-cheat team’s work, sadness for those unable to play due to the Secure Boot requirement, and resigned to him and his peer’s fate in the endless battle against cheaters.

“We were pretty happy with how the anti-cheat performed,” Buhl beamed when asked how he felt the anti-cheat held up during the betas. “Obviously I’ll say we can never be perfect, anti-cheat is always a cat-and-mouse game where we’re constantly going back and forth and keeping on top of what the cheaters are doing. But from the beginning this was something we put a high priority on, so when we launch this game we have a really strong anti-cheat program in place.”

Buhl would elaborate by sharing that Battlefield 6 had two anti-cheat teams working on the game, in what he described as a “pretty massive investment” by EA. There’s the EA anti-cheat team that built the Javalin anti-cheat team, as well as the Battlefield 6 anti-cheat team that focused on “integrating EA’s technology as well as monitoring and all the other responsibilities you’d expect from an anti-cheat team”.

The reason for this expense is to ensure a “fair play experience”, which was “critical to Battlefield’s success” according to Buhl. The cost for the user is granting additional access to Battlefield Studios’ and EA’s anti-cheat, as well as enabling Secure Boot on their PC. This led to many turning away from the PC beta, something Buhl is bummed out about.

Those able to get the game running are having a blast.

“The fact is I wish we didn’t have to do things like Secure Boot” Buhl admits. “It does prevent some players from playing the game. Some people’s PCs can’t handle it and they can’t play: that really sucks. I wish everyone could play the game with low friction and not have to do these sorts of things.”

Buhl continues: “Unfortunately these are some of the strongest tools in our toolbox to stop cheating. Again, nothing makes cheating impossible, but enabling Secure Boot and having kernel-level access makes it so much harder to cheat and so much easier for us to find and stop cheating.”

So where does this cat-and-mouse game end? Does it ever end, and will players have to get used to providing kernel-level access, enabling Secure Boot, and opening their door to other technical requirements for new games?

“The short answer is it never ends,” states Buhl. “We expect our anti-cheat team will continue working on technology, and if at some point there’s a new technological requirement that we’ll have to add that’s critical to securing the fairness of the game, we’ll do that. Or we’ll certainly evaluate that. Anti-cheat never ends, it’s a constant cat-and-mouse game. We’re never going to win. Hopefully they’re never going to win. But in the end, we want to be as safe and secure as possible.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 director adds another DLC teaser to the pile: ‘We may be cooking’

I don’t blame any of the developers behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 for not immediately thinking about DLC plans just as their game exploded in popularity and hit sales numbers in the millions earlier this year. But in the last few months they’ve acknowledged the hunger for DLC in every way but a direct confirmation and at this point I’d just like to know if those plans are real.

In May, writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen told a fan on Instagram that while there was “nothing concrete” in the works, the “chances are good” that we’d see DLC. But then a few days later she told the Washington Post that those comments were taken out of context and that the studio is focused on improving the base game.

A month later, the official Bluesky account reiterated those plans with a slight wink at possible “new content” coming down the line.

That brings us to a comment from director Guillaume Broche this week in an interview with YouTuber MrMattyPlays. When asked about plans to release DLC, Broche said, “There may be,” and that it’s “a bit too early to say.”

“We may be cooking,” he added with a smile that is the closest thing to a “yes” I’ve heard yet.

Earlier in the interview, Broche, seemingly talking about a proper sequel, said Expedition 33 is just “one of the stories we want to tell in this franchise,” and that it’s too soon to announce what that will be.

While he did not confirm DLC is coming, it sure sounds like the studio is already thinking about what comes next for Clair Obscur, whether that’s just a sequel or some kind of expansion in the future. For a game that is being compared to Final Fantasy for its extremely satisfying turn-based combat and eccentric world, it would be a bummer for the journey to end here.

Broche recently said that he doesn’t plan on expanding the team at Sandfall Interactive, preferring to keep it small, so if DLC truly is in the works, it might be a while.

Top CDC Officials Resign After Director Is Pushed Out

Susan Monarez is no longer the director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to a post by the official Department of Health and Human Services X account. She had been in the position for just a month. In the wake of her apparent ouster, several other CDC leaders have resigned.

Named acting CDC director in January, Monarez was officially confirmed to the position by the Senate on July 29 and sworn in two days later. During her brief tenure, the CDC’s main campus in Atlanta was attacked by a gunman who blamed the Covid-19 vaccine for making him sick and depressed. A local police officer, David Rose, was killed by the suspect when responding to the shooting.

In a statement Wednesday evening Mark Zaid and Abbe David Lowell, Monarez’s lawyers, alleged that she had been “targeted” for refusing “to rubber-stamp unscientific, reckless directives and fire dedicated health experts.” The statement further says that Monarez has not resigned and does not plan to, and claims that she has not received notification that she’s been fired.

According to emails obtained by WIRED, at least three other senior CDC officials resigned Wednesday evening: Demetre Daskalakis, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases; Debra Houry, chief medical officer and deputy director for program and science; and Daniel Jernigan, director of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases.

More resignations are expected to become public soon, say CDC staff with knowledge of the departures.

“I worry that political appointees will not make decisions on the science, but instead focus on supporting the administration’s agenda,” says one CDC employee, who was granted anonymity out of concerns over retribution. “I worry that the next directors will not support and protect staff.”

President Donald Trump’s original pick to lead the CDC was David Weldon, a physician and former Republican congressman from Florida who had a history of making statements questioning the safety of vaccines. But hours before his Senate confirmation hearing in March, the White House withdrew Weldon’s nomination. The administration then nominated Monarez.

The CDC leadership exits come amid recent vaccine policy upheaval fomented by HHS secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who in May removed the Covid-19 vaccine from the list of the CDC’s recommended vaccines for healthy children and pregnant women. The following month, he fired all 17 sitting members of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, a group of independent experts that makes science-based recommendations on vaccines.

In their place, he installed eight new members, including several longtime vaccine critics. “A clean sweep is necessary to reestablish public confidence in vaccine science,” Kennedy said in a statement at the time.

Earlier this month under Kennedy’s leadership, HHS canceled a half billion dollars in funding for research on mRNA vaccines. This month HHS also announced the reinstatement of the Task Force on Safer Childhood Vaccines, a federal advisory panel created by Congress in 1986 to improve vaccine safety and oversight for children in the US. The panel was disbanded in 1998, when it issued its final report. Public health experts worry that the panel is a move to further undermine established vaccine science.

CDC Director Denies Report She’s Been Fired by Trump Regime (HHS Says She’s Out)

The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Susan Monarez, was reportedly fired on Wednesday after she resisted changes to covid-19 vaccine policies, according to the Washington Post. But her lawyer says she hasn’t been officially notified of the termination, throwing a curveball into an already chaotic news cycle at the CDC.

“When CDC Director Susan Monarez refused to rubber-stamp unscientific, reckless directives and fire dedicated health experts, she chose protecting the public over serving a political agenda,” attorney Mark Zaid posted to Bluesky on Wednesday night. “For that, she has been targeted.”

“Dr. Monarez has neither resigned nor received notification from the White House that she has been fired, and as a person of integrity and devoted to science, she will not resign,” Zaid continued.

Monarez was confirmed by the U.S. Senate just four weeks ago. After news broke of her ouster (whether it’s real or just imagined by the Trump regime), several other top officials at the federal health agency announced they were resigning, including the Chief Medical Officer.

Monarez was “pressed for days” by Trump regime lawyers and Robert F. Kennedy, Secretary of Health and Human Services, to rescind certain approvals for covid vaccines, according to the Post. Kennedy personally asked Monarez whether she was “aligned with the administration’s efforts to change vaccine policy,” and it seems like we can guess that she wasn’t.

Kennedy reportedly asked Monarez to resign for not supporting “President Trump’s agenda,” but she declined and even sought support from Sen. Bill Cassidy, a Republican from Louisiana, who has received criticism for not pushing back harder against Trump’s anti-science crusaders like Kennedy. Cassidy is a physician and has been seen as one of the few Republicans in a position to stop zealots in the Trump regime who are pushing anti-vaccine policies.

Monarez had testified during her confirmation hearing that she didn’t see any link between vaccines and autism, something that puts her at odds with Kennedy’s worldview and the so-called Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement. Kennedy first promised back in April to reveal the “cause” of autism in September—something that should be a huge red flag for anyone who cares about science. Scientific discoveries aren’t announced on a schedule like an album dropping. Kennedy renewed his promise to reveal the “cause” during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

The X account for HHS claimed that Monarez is “no longer director” of the CDC, thanking her for her “dedicated service” but without explaining why she left.

Other top officials who have resigned in the wake of Monarez’s supposed firing include everyone from the Chief Medical Officer to experts on infectious diseases and immunizations.

Debra Houry resigns

Debra Houry, the Chief Medical Officer at CDC, reportedly resigned, explaining in a memo to staff that “I am committed to protecting the public’s health, but the ongoing changes prevent me from continuing in my job as a leader of the agency,” according to STAT.

Houry wrote that science should “never be censored or subject to political interpretations,” suggesting that precisely such a thing was currently underway at the CDC.

“Vaccines save lives—this is an indisputable, well-established, scientific fact,” Houry wrote, according to the Washington Post. “Recently, the overstating of risks and the rise of misinformation have cost lives, as demonstrated by the highest number of U.S. measles cases in 30 years and the violent attack on our agency.”

Houry was referring to a shooting at CDC’s headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, earlier this month. A police officer was killed, and the shooter, identified as Patrick Joseph White, fired at least 500 rounds into the building before taking his own life. White reportedly was upset about the covid-19 vaccine, which he believed made him sick.

Jennifer Layden resigns

Jennifer Layden, director of the CDC’s Office of Public Health Data, Surveillance, and Technology, also resigned on Wednesday, according to Politico. Layden joined the CDC in 2020, coming from the Chicago Department of Public Health, and co-led a CDC task force on covid-19 that issued guidance on vaccines during the height of the pandemic.

Demetre Daskalakis resigns

Demetre Daskalakis, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, also resigned in the wake of Moranez’s firing.

“I am not able to serve in this role any longer because of the ongoing weaponization of public health,” Daskalakis said in an email, according to STAT. Daskalakis wrote that he hoped CDC staff would “continue to shine despite this dark cloud over the agency and our profession,” according to the Post.

Daniel Jernigan resigns

Daniel Jernigan, director of the National Center for Emerging Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, also resigned, according to Reuters. Jernigan’s departure is especially significant, considering the U.S. just confirmed its first case of the flesh-eating screwworm parasite.

Monarez wasn’t Trump’s first pick for the head of the CDC. The president, presumably in consultation with RFK Jr., wanted Republican congressman Dave Weldon from Florida to take the role. Weldon was withdrawn from consideration in March over his anti-vaccine views.

One of Kennedy’s allies told the Daily Beast this week that the Health Secretary planned to pull covid-19 vaccines completely from the market “within months,” but it’s unclear if that will actually happen. Kennedy announced Wednesday that the FDA had revoked the emergency use authorization of the covid vaccine and issued narrower rules that will make it much harder for people under the age of 65 and those without other health concerns from getting vaccinated.

It seems very likely that those changes to the covid-19 vaccine policy are at the heart of the shake-up at the CDC, which some people are calling Bloody Wednesday on social media.

Resident Evil 9: Requiem’s director explains how in one crucial way, it is the “most extreme” title in the series yet

Resident Evil 9: Requiem’s director wants you to know that it may very well be the most extreme title in the series. But not in the way you might think. When he talks of extremities Kōshi Nakanishi isn’t talking about blood, guts, and gore – he’s talking about pacing. And your heart rate, for that matter.

For my money, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is one of the finest-paced video games around. I’ve written about my admiration for the curve of RE7’s gameplay and narrative before. The way in which protagonist Ethan Winters claws his way from scared and alone to practically Rambo-esque in the finale with the ultimate transition masked by an action-packed flashback is fantastic. A lot of horror games feature this curve, but few manage it as deftly as RE7. It’s real chef’s kiss stuff. One of the chefs in question was Nakanishi, who directed RE7 and is back in the director’s chair for Requiem. So naturally, sitting down to talk about his new game, I ask him about pacing.

“My approach is the same this time,” Nakanishi notes after some modest hand-waving of my interpretation of RE7’s pacing. Requiem protagonist Grace will start off quite defenceless and certainly terrified. Spoilers mean Nakanishi offers no specifics, but he promises that Grace’s situation will change as the game progresses – something he sees as integral to the DNA of the Resident Evil series in general.

“There’s really this graph of tension and release throughout the game, building up to a climax. That’s something that I think Resident Evil is really unique with among horror games. We don’t just scare you – we offer you a chance to release that tension by overcoming it all.”

That curve of tension and release, drawing the player to the edge of sanity and then plunging them into a metaphorical cold bath, is indeed what this series has always done best. In the old days, that might’ve taken the form of simply slamming shut a safe room door where Nemesis couldn’t reach you. It’s a more nuanced design philosophy now – but the principle is the same. This time, Nakanishi believes his team has stretched that curve to its greatest extreme yet.

“We’re at the testing phase now in development as we gear up to the February release, and even as we play it internally, putting ourselves in the mindset of the players – I really feel that it’s going to be an incredible rollercoaster. They’re going to feel like that curve of tension to release is going to be… it’s perhaps the most extreme gap between those two axes. The points on that curve are going to be so far apart from each other that it’s going to be incredible.”

Much thought has gone into calibrating these extremes. In the first public Requiem demo we see the return of a Stalker-type enemy – a near invincible hulking beast that can only be fled. I was fine with that – but beneath the preview in which I gleefully articulated how the machinations of Nakanishi’s team had made me screech an expletive so loud it was heard by a colleague rooms away, one commenter sums up the potential pitfall of redeploying this design, asking: ‘This again?’

“It is a concern,” Nakanishi admits when I ask about potential player over-exposure and over-familiarity with the Stalker enemy mechanic. It has, after all, been used a lot by Capcom of late. RE7 had Jack Baker, the remakes had Nemesis and Mr. X, and Village’s Alcina Dimitrescu continued the trend. There’s an unnamed beast in Requiem that terrorizes poor Grace, pursuing her through the halls of a dilapidated hospital.

“It’s something we have to think about every time we have a new game with another stalker. We can’t have the players thinking ‘oh, there goes the stalker that I’ve come to expect’ – so this is something we’ve thought about in terms of approach.

“I think for this time… well, as usual, we’re pretty tight-lipped on the details at this stage. But… we want to give players a method to overcome the stalker enemy. What that entails is something that we’ll be getting into down the line, but I think that you’ll feel like you finally have a chance to turn the tables and deal with the stalker in a way that you haven’t been able to in past titles.”

There it is again, then: that ebb and flow. The terror, the tension, the release. Nakanishi describes this as Resident Evil’s signature, though the legibility of that signature undoubtedly varies from one game to the next. The original game has more tension; the action-heavier 4 is plainly more release-driven.

Part of the intent behind Requiem appears to be to draw both elements out further than before while also striking a more absolute balance. This, I would argue, makes it closer to the soft reboot seventh entry in the series – but in other ways its design could also be considered an answer to that game and some of its fran response.

“It’s possible that Resident Evil 7 almost went too far in the direction of completely betraying your expectations,” the director muses. “While it was a fresh start for the series, there’s always fans who say they wish it was more like the Resident Evil that they know and love.”

In this Requiem presents the opposite. Protagonist Grace Ashcroft is new, but her surname is a key clue: she is the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, last playable in a spin-off from two decades ago and probably only fully remembered by the most insatiable of lore nerds. In the demo, she wakes up in a side room of the Rhodes Hill Civic Care Center – a hospital connected to Racoon City, the classic series location we catch glimpses of in the trailers.

“The remakes featuring Raccoon City showed how much love there was for that setting. I had this feeling that as a sort of beloved starting point for the series, it’d be great to check in on it and see how it’s doing as a location,” Nakanishi explains.

“So when it was time to plan what the ninth title would be, it felt like a good time. 30 years later, both in the series timeline and the real-world timeline. What’s happening in Raccoon City, what’s going on there? The timing was right.”

It would be easy to see a decision to loop back to the past as a cynical play – but Capcom had no need to do such a thing. The Ethan Winters ‘duology’ of RE7 and Village was successful, even though it went to great pains to largely separate itself from the rest of the franchise. This perhaps drove Capcom’s decision to publicly show off some of its aborted experimentation of what the ninth Resident Evil game could be, including releasing footage of prototypes of a multiplayer co-op affair – in many ways, it is proof that Capcom is not just working from the book.

“We really wanted to get across to people how much we were challenging ourselves with this ninth mainline entry,” RE9 producer Masato Kumazawa says of the publisher’s surprising openness about cancelled versions of the game.

“We wanted to admit that we didn’t just arrive at the game that you see fully-formed – there was a period where we thought really hard about what the right way to go would be. Being honest about that, I think, showed that we really took seriously the responsibility of designing this game.

“It’s a constant point of discussion for us as a team. What is Resident Evil now? What should it be for the next game? What do the fans see it as? Revealing some of our thinking in that commentary video from earlier in the summer was just a way of us saying that, yes, we do look at what everybody is saying and it does have an impact on our process. Even if we ultimately decide the direction ourselves, it’s an input we pay attention to.”

Fan input has resulted in this path: a new-but-familiar protagonist, a return to beloved locations thirty years on, and a flick switch that takes you between the two distinct perspectives of modern Resident Evil – third or first-person, the choice is yours. To Nakanishi, returning to the past represents something fresh, especially after the detour of 7 and Village.

“We’ve had our different look at the series, and now going back to normal feels like a fresh new take,” he declares. “I think that in itself will be a refreshing surprise for players when they play the game, and hopefully they’ll see that this is staying a little closer to the idea of what they think that a Resident Evil game should be, keeping those hardcore fans happy.”

All of this lines up, I think, with the placement of Resident Evil 9: Requiem as an anniversary release. Coming full circle is the norm for milestone celebrations after all. March 22nd next year is the 30th anniversary of the franchise debut, under a month after Requiem’s release. Nakanishi corrects me on this, however.

“I actually kind of wish we could have released it a bit earlier than that,” Nakanishi laughs. As it happens, the anniversary status of Requiem is a happy accident.

“It was always going to be continuing the DNA of the series while trying to keep things fresh,” adds Kumazawa. “You want to have the things that the fans expect in a Resident Evil game, of course. So, yes, we just sort of landed on the anniversary over the course of the development period, but hopefully it still feels like a fitting tribute to where the series has come from.”

John Wick and Deadpool 2 director David Leitch’s Gears of War movie is progressing forward, with producer Kelly McCormick saying there is a “lot of energy” around getting the movie made due in part to the fact that a new game, Gears of War: E-Day, is coming out in 2026.

McCormick clarified, though, that the Gears of War movie for Netflix will not be ready in time for the game’s release date, whenever in 2026 that may be. “We won’t hit that release date, but maybe something that feels relevant to the release of the new game,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

McCormick and Leitch are married and run the production company 87North together. She added that Leitch is excited to make the Gears of War movie because it’s a genre he hasn’t done before: war. It’s also “a bit of sci-fi” that Leitch will get to make “in his own way,” McCormick said.

Leitch, a former stuntman who worked as Brad Pitt’s double in movies like Fight Club and Ocean’s Eleven, directed 2014’s John Wick with Chad Stahelski but was not credited due to Hollywood rules. He later directed Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw, Bullet Train, and The Fall Guy.

As for Stahelski, he’s making movies based on the video games Ghost of Tsushima and Rainbow Six.

The Gears of War movie’s latest script is being written by Jon Spaihts, who previously wrote Prometheus, Doctor Strange, and Passengers, along with Dune 1 and 2.

There isn’t much known about the Gears of War movie, but the game’s official social media account reacted to The Hollywood Reporter interview, writing, “Oh hell yeah! This my kind of shit!”

Gears of War seemingly won’t be Leitch’s next film, so no one should expect it to come out soon. The director is preparing to shoot Amazon MGM Studio’s 2026 heist thriller How to Rob a Bank, which has Nicholas Hoult and Anna Sawai attached to star in it.

Wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista has lobbied for years to play Marcus, and he does bear a strong resemblance to the character, but no casting announcements for the Gears of War movie have been made. Meanwhile, Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski has previously been adamant that Chris Pratt shouldn’t play any role in the film.

For nearly two decades, Gears of War has been an Xbox exclusive. However, that is changing soon with the launch of Gears of War: Reloaded on August 26 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

As Battlefield 6 commits to ‘keeping it grounded’ with skins, Call of Duty director makes an unconvincing promise to ‘calibrate’ cosmetics in Black Ops 7

We’re set for another Call of Duty vs. Battlefield face-off this year, and it’s already been fascinating to watch how these two military shooters present themselves. When it comes to one of the most incendiary topics in multiplayer games at the moment, the rising prevalence of goofy Fortnite-style skins, Call of Duty has become the poster child of ugliness run amok.

The growing exhaustion over incongruent cosmetics that erode Call of Duty’s art style is what prompted Battlefield Studios’ stance on skins in Battlefield 6: “It has to be grounded. That is what BF3 and BF4 was—it was all soldiers, on the ground. It’s going to be like this. I don’t think it needs Nicki Minaj. Let’s keep it real, keep it grounded.”

Time will tell if Battlefield 6 actually sticks to that mission statement—the allure of tacky crap might be irresistible when enough players are eager to buy them—but it’s telling that, given the same opportunity to renew its stance on cosmetics, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 developers were decidedly wishy-washy about the whole thing.

It’s the usual marketing-approved gobbledygook that almost sounds like something meaningful was said, but wasn’t: Activision has heard the complaints, is taking them “seriously,” and will “calibrate” going forward.

What sort of calibration it has in mind is open to interpretation, and non-specific enough that Blops 7 can still comfortably cash in on collaborations with cartoons, ’80s action heroes, and Amazon Originals without going against its stated stance.

My read on it is that, while Call of Duty’s full-bodied embrace of goofy skins probably isn’t loved by many of the developers actually creating the art that gets slopped over by the Store tab, the backlash is not a particularly pressing concern for Activision at large. There are two sides to this, after all—lots of people enjoy uglifying their operators (to the tune of $20 per bundle).

There’s another wrinkle to Blops 7’s “calibrated” cosmetic plan: Starting with Season 1 of Blops 7, all weapons and cosmetics from Black Ops 6 will carry forward, inviting a tidal wave of fashion nightmares introduced over the previous 12 months to the new game.

God of War Director Teases Reveal Of Next Game He’s Been Working On

PlayStation fans have been waiting to hear what’s next from Sony’s God of War studio Santa Monica amid rumors that the 2018 game’s director, Cory Barlog, is busy creating a new IP. The veteran developer appears to have finally provided them with their first official details, albeit in the strangest way possible: his Facebook account.

“I’d like to share a little bit about our new project,” Barlog wrote on Facebook, as first reported by by Game Informer. “I’m incredibly proud of what the team at Santa Monica Studio has been accomplishing. It’s a technically ambitious project, something that’s not easy to achieve. This is a new IP we’ve been working on for years, and if all goes well, we’re planning to show it to you later this year. I couldn’t be more excited.”

While many have shared doubts about the veracity of the post, it’s been liked on the social media platform by people like God of War composer Bear McCreary and former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida. Sony did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

As rumors have swirled about what exactly Santa Monica is making, Bloomberg‘s Jason Schreier reported earlier this year that, contrary to popular speculation, the studio was not making a sci-fi game. He was more cryptic on whether it’s related to God of War or not. “It’s not a new IP but it might feel like one,” he wrote. “Maybe that’s why people are confused.”

This led some fans to speculate if the upcoming game could be a God of War spin-off that is so different from the existing third-person action franchise it’s being treated internally as a new IP. It’s unclear right now how many projects Santa Monica has going at the same time, with rumored God of War set in Greece reportedly delayed and an online spin-off at fellow PlayStation studio Bluepoint reportedly canceled earlier this year.

One things for sure: the new game’s announcement, whatever it ends up being, is something PS5 super fans have been desperate for as this console generation drags on without many first-party single-player blockbusters to point to. If Barlog’s next game does get announced this year, presumably at the Game Awards, it’ll suggest the PS5 is shaping up to have a strong last few years when it comes to Sony-made exclusives.

Dogecoin Foundation director, Timothy Stebbing, has revealed his vision for RadioDoge, a Dogecoin grassroots project committed to improving financial inclusion for unbanked individuals.

The technology uses long-distance RF technologies like LoRa and VaraHF to enable dependable and durable data transfer in remote areas, eliminating the requirement for traditional internet access to reach the Dogecoin blockchain.

RadioDoge also utilizes the Starlink network. In a tweet on X, Stebbing revealed his musings about RadioDoge. He highlighted a vision of having a RadioDoge base station coverage of 500kms for ground based HF and lorawan, which would be about 150 base stations to cover Africa’s 30.3 million square kms.

Stebbing added: “That’s providing a means of exchange to all of Africa without access to internet for under 1k/month. no more middle-men ripping off farmers because they can’t access banking. Literally life changing if someone could commercialize this stuff.”
