Like Us, the Director of ‘John Wick’ Didn’t Love ‘The Continental’

This weekend, a new film from the world of John Wick is coming to theaters. It’s called Ballerina and we’re guessing you’ve heard about it. But two years ago, did you hear about a full-fledged John Wick streaming series that was on Peacock? Maybe not. The Continental: From the World of John Wick debuted on the streamer in 2023 to average reviews and tepid audience response. It has yet to return.

Part of that is probably because two of the most crucial people involved in the John Wick franchise, star Keanu Reeves and co-creator/director/current overseer Chad Stahelski, were not actively involved. And, in a new interview talking about both Ballerina and a new documentary called Wick is Pain, Stahelski sounds more than a little bummed about it.

“Keanu and I were—I wouldn’t say sidelined, but our opinion was heard and not really noted,” Stahelski told the Hollywood Reporter. “[The studio] tried to convince me they knew what they were doing. A group of individuals thought they had the magic sauce. But if you take out Basil Iwanyk’s producing intuitiveness, if you take out Keanu’s way of delivering quirky dialogue and if you take out all the visuals I have in my head from Wong Kar-wai, anime, Leone, Bernardo Bertucci or Andrei Tchaikovsky … then it’s not the same thing. They thought this was as easy as using anamorphic lenses, do a kooky hotel, put in weird dialogue, and insert crime drama.”

Stahelski continued, admitting his way of doing things doesn’t always line up with the status quo. “If you saw our process, you’d be like, ‘You’re telling me this billion-dollar franchise does it this way?’” he said. “I’m scouting my next film in London and we saw a cool location yesterday which totally changed the second act. We rewrote the whole thing. I find great cast members and rewrite their parts constantly. That’s what makes [the movies] so good and organic—we’re constantly upgrading. But the studio likes to know what they’re getting for their buck and want to lock a script for budget reasons. While we’re saying, ‘Just write the check, we’ll see you at the finish line.’”

Which, it sounds like, was the case with The Continental. It was not the case, however, with Ballerina, in which both Stahelski and Reeves were involved. And it will not be the case with a potential John Wick 5, which Stahelski knows everyone wants, but he’s still not completely sold on.

“I’m not going to lie to you, it’s a bit of a conundrum,” he said about bringing Wick, who died in the last film, back. “Me and Mike Finch— the writer on 4 who’s also writing 5—we’ve got a pretty good story that I think is cool. Once we have a 50-page book, and if we’re feeling it, we’ll sit with Keanu and shape this thing. Look, everybody seems to want it. It’s a matter of whether we crack it. We’re actively working on it. It’s just … is it going to be satisfying?”

As for John Wick 5, we’ll have to wait and see. But if you head over to the Hollywood Reporter we promise the rest of Stahelski’s interview is incredibly satisfying.

Fantastic Four Director Denies Doom’s Involvement In His Film

Ever since Robert Downey Jr. blew our multiversal minds at San Diego Comic-Con last year when he revealed he was returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom, Marvel fanatics have been trying to figure out just when Victor Von Doom would appear. After the Thunderbolts* post-credit scene appeared to hint at Dr. Doom’s arrival in the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps, director Matt Shakman has emerged to slightly crush those dreams.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Shakman plainly asserted that “Doom is not a part of my film, and therefore not a part of my purview.” That should be it, right? Wrong. Fans in denial (and delusion) are interpreting Shakman’s statements as technically true but not the full truth.

Some fans are focusing on how Shakman specifically mentioned that Doom is not part of his film or his purview. That sounds, they argue, like an attempt to establish plausible deniability, given how Marvel has separated certain duties on its films. After Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier revealed to ComicBook.com that the film’s post-credit scene was filmed weeks before the theatrical release, the Russo Brothers confirmed they were the ones who filmed it, rather than Schreier himself. That told Marvel fans that a film’s director doesn’t have to be involved with any post-credit reveals, which would align with Shakman’s assertion that Doom has nothing to do with his efforts on the film.

In the Thunderbolts* post-credit scene, the New Avengers get a notification that an unidentified aircraft had entered Earth’s atmosphere before we see the iconic “4″ logo of the Fantastic Four emblazoned on the side of the ship. Doom has hijacked the Fantastic Four’s ship multiple times in the comic books, so it’s not far-fetched to believe he might do the same in the MCU.

We’ll have to wait until July 25 to see if these theories are anything more than just fanboy fantasies.

‘It’s really misleading’: Ballerina director Len Wiseman explains why the John Wick series’ new movie shouldn’t be called a spin-off film

Ballerina director Len Wiseman has rejected claims that the John Wick film franchise’s latest entry is a spin-off.

Speaking to TechRadar ahead of the movie’s release, Wiseman argued that it should actually be called a “spin-on” – i.e. a film that puts its own spin on a film franchise’s well-established formula.

Wiseman admits that very few people, if anyone, will have heard the phrase “spin-on” before. Nevertheless, he insists that the Ana de Armas-starring film is “fully connected” to the movie series’ other entries – and not just because Wick appears in it.

Ballerina‘s first trailer raised eyebrows about Wick’s inclusion. After all, at the end of John Wick Chapter 4, Keanu Reeves’ iconic hitman was – spoiler! – presumed dead. With John Wick 5 in early development, though, it’s likely that the well-dressed assassin hasn’t taken his last breath.

However, Ballerina takes place between John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum and its sequel, which is why Reeves’ gun-for-hire is, at this point on the John Wick timeline, still alive and kicking. For more on said timeline, read my guide on how to watch the John Wick movies in order.

But I’m getting off-track. With Ballerina set between Parabellum and John Wick Chapter 4, plus Reeves’ involvement in its story, the franchise’s latest entry should be viewed as the mainline series’ newest flick. It’s for that reason that Wiseman has coined the “spin-on” moniker for one of 2025’s highly anticipated new movies.

When I ask him if Ballerina should be labeled an “in-between-quel” – another industry term for a movie that’s set between two other films – Wiseman replied: “Yeah, it is. I’ve seen people call it a spin-off, which is really misleading.

“Ballerina’s events mostly run parallel to John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum. We’re really building out the world of John Wick, so it’s more of a ‘spin-on’ than a ‘spin-off’. I know that’s not a phrase, but it should be!”

Asked to explain how Ballerina explores the movies series colloquially known as the ‘John Wick universe’, Wiseman added: “One of the things that first attracted me to this film was the mythology of John Wick and how layered it is.

“Here, we’re able to dive deeper into that mythos and explore the Ruska Roma, who we’ve met in previous movies. Before, we’ve seen this group through John Wick’s eyes and his experiences [with them]. Now, we get to sift through the layers of their folklore, and try to balance that with what was previously established. We had a ton of fun with that and I think audiences will appreciate it.”

Ballerina: From the World of John Wick lands in theaters worldwide on June 6.

Everything We Know About Judas, The Upcoming RPG From The Director Of BioShock

First revealed at 2022’s The Game Awards, BioShock writer-director Ken Levine’s upcoming narrative-driven RPG, Judas, is still shrouded in mystery. Developed by Levine’s new studio, Ghost Story Games, Judas was almost immediately labeled as “BioShock in space” by fans. But as the game’s launch draws closer, it’s become clear that although Judas certainly draws inspiration from the series that made Levine a household name, it’s not just BioShock with a futuristic coat of paint. Judas has its own identity.

While the details are still relatively sparse, trailers, preview events, and developer interviews have painted a much clearer picture of what players can expect from Levine’s latest creation. If you’re interested in decoding this enigmatic RPG, keep scrolling for a breakdown of everything we know about Judas, from plot details to gameplay features and everything in between.

When does Judas launch?

Judas was originally slated for a March 2025 launch, but March came and went without a peep from Levine and the developers at Ghost Story Games.

Currently, there is no official release date for Judas. The game’s Steam page lists its release date as “coming soon.” In a recent earnings report, Take-Two listed the game’s launch date as “to be announced.”

What platforms is Judas releasing on?

Judas will launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

What is Judas about?

The game’s description on Steam reads, “A disintegrating starship. A desperate escape plan. You are the mysterious and troubled Judas. Your only hope for survival is to make or break alliances with your worst enemies. Will you work together to fix what you broke–or will you leave it to burn?”

Players will be stepping into the shoes of the aforementioned troubled protagonist, Judas. Judas is a woman who appears to live and work on a spaceship called The Mayflower. The Mayflower has recently suffered some sort of disaster, one that–based on the game’s description–Judas herself is at least partially responsible for. Many areas of the ship have broken off, depressurized, or caught on fire, and the goal is clear: Survive, no matter the cost.

It seems that most (if not all) of the Mayflower’s inhabitants are robotically augmented.

Based on the protagonist’s biblical name, it’s likely that betrayal is a major theme in the game’s narrative, though it’s not entirely clear if Judas herself is the betrayer or the one who has been betrayed. Interestingly, the game’s trailers feature several shots of injured androids who look identical to humans with the exception of a glowing green circle on the back of their hands.

“The ship is… dying,” a visibly injured Judas declares in the game’s announcement trailer. “And my only way out of here is with one of them.”

Judas herself may, in fact, be an android, as gameplay footage shows her sporting the glowing green circle on the back of one hand and shooting Plasmid-like powers out of it. It’s also possible Judas is actually a human who has been robotically augmented, a la Cyberpunk 2077’s protagonist, V. But if that’s the case, Judas has been very heavily augmented–another trailer clip shows her finishing off an enemy while floating around outside the damaged Mayflower … without any sort of suit to protect her body from the vacuum of open space.

A calendar reveals the year is 1979, while text on the left side of the screen suggests Judas herself may be an AI-controlled robot.

Time travel may also be a theme in the game’s narrative, as another trailer features a quick jump-cut in which Judas can be seen near a wall calendar indicating that the year is 1979. This could also be an illusion, however, as some of Judas’s statements in the trailer suggest that the game takes place in a world where thoughts are recorded by a Big Brother-esque entity, and false memories can be implanted into the station’s robotically augmented inhabitants, Westworld-style.

Other shots in the game’s trailers reference “The Big Three,” a trio of characters who once controlled The Mayflower. The Big Three is made up of Hope, a young woman with pink hair and a childlike aesthetic; Nefertiti, a woman with strange mechanical abilities and an affinity for fashion; and Tom, a middle-aged man in a cowboy hat. It appears that these three characters are Judas’s enemies, and players may have to choose which one Judas escapes the ship with.

“I’m here to set you free,” Judas states in one trailer as she presses a button, ignoring the computer terminal’s warnings that doing so will cause a catastrophic failure. “Whether you like it or not.”

Prior to the disaster, The Big Three seemed to be quite popular with The Mayflower’s inhabitants.

The game’s trailers indicate it’s expected to receive an M rating. According to the ESRB, M-rated games are “generally suitable for ages 17 and up,” but “may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language.”

Judas gameplay details

While “BioShock in space” is a great elevator pitch, what we’ve seen from the game so far suggests that Judas is far from a BioShock clone. Yes, it’s a narrative-driven first-person shooter RPG from the guy who made BioShock, and thus bears some resemblance to the BioShock series. But Judas also differs from Levine’s previous work in many ways.

One notable difference between Judas and the BioShock series is the fact that Judas is a procedurally generated roguelite.

“We call it pseudo-procedural because it’s not like Minecraft where everything’s being generated off a set of pure mathematical heuristics,” Levine explained in an interview. “You build all these smaller piece elements in the game and then you teach the game how to make good levels essentially, and [a] good story, and most importantly, [make it] reactive to what you do.”

The Big Three appear to Judas as holograms, and her relationship with each of them will play a major role in the game’s narrative. Doing a favor for one member of The Big Three will increase their affinity for Judas, but is likely to displease at least one of the other two members, and anger comes with consequences. If Judas upsets one member, they may get back at her by ratting her out to another member by revealing her plans or current location. It’s clear that Judas’ story design–especially when it comes to player choices–goes much deeper than BioShock’s very binary “Will you save the Little Sisters, or are you a complete sociopath?” narrative choice.

Judas can open the strange implant on her left hand to swap out abilities. When the hatch closes, it glows green.

As for the game’s “roguelite” elements, Levine says that death is an integral part of the game. Items that allow Judas to regain health are scarce, and enemies are everywhere.

“You do have the opportunity when you die to go change yourself,” Levine says. “Improve yourself, change your tool chest–which is a pretty broad and variable tool chest–and change the Mayflower itself.”

Though Judas is far from a BioShock clone, it still proudly bears the hallmarks of Levine’s previous work: a dystopian setting, Plasmid-esque powers, and off-the-wall set pieces like a gigantic robotic dog that Judas boards like a Bathysphere.

Path of Exile 2 director says GGG is learning from its mistakes while supporting 2 games at once: ‘If you want to lock the date, you can’t lock the features’

When Grinding Gear Games first announced Path of Exile 2, it made a promise: PoE1 wasn’t going anywhere, and development on both titles would continue in parallel. Ten months after the last Path of Exile league, it’s clear that the studio bit off a bit more than it can chew, but game director Jonathan Rogers was optimistic in a new interview with YouTuber Talkative Tri this week that things are close to being back on track.

One of the main problems, as he sees it, was that GGG veered from a development philosophy it’d had for a long time.

“If you want to lock the features, you can’t lock the date,” he said. “And if you want to lock the date, you can’t lock the features. In the past, we were always locking dates, but then as we had PoE2 in development, we got to the point where we were locking features instead and I think honestly that wasn’t the best.”

Path of Exile 2’s most recent update was called Dawn of the Hunt, and it’s clear that the focus was squarely on a new class, the Huntress. This painted GGG into a bit of a corner—you can’t really have a hunt dawning without, you know, someone to do the hunting. They couldn’t make announcements about it until they were sure that she was ready, let alone start talking about anything they had cooking with PoE1. As a result, the update felt rushed, and personally I think that was a big contributor to its cool reception.

Moving forward, Rogers said, this uncertainty will be a thing of the past. “We’re doing four months, it’s going to be consistent, it’s always going to be the case. We don’t wanna have this kind of uncertainty around this any more,” he declared, to the resounding cheers of grinders everywhere. With the new 3.26 league coming June 13 for PoE1, this puts us squarely on the release cadence initially promised.

A new league or major patch every two months sounds like a dream come true for a PoE sicko like myself, but after over 300 days of radio silence on PoE1’s 3.26 update I think you’d forgive me for being just a touch skeptical. I’m thinking we might see that number stretch a little bit, particularly at first.

Rogers was adamant, though: “With the new development model, like the date is fixed and the content is not, that might mean that the class we’re planning to add might not make it. Now I think it will, but if it had to not make it in order to make it so all the other classes we already have are good, then we will do that tradeoff and that is not the mindset we were in for 0.2.0.”

He added that their primary focus for PoE2’s 0.3 update was making sure that existing classes felt good to play, and if that came at the expense of the new one, so be it. The willingness to make cuts in the name of deadlines tells me that GGG is serious about sticking to the schedule, which is something the community’s been clamoring for since the usual release window for PoE1 came and went half a year ago.

We’ll have to see how things shake out with the schedule, but for now at least the content is heading in the right direction. There have been a number of patches to Path of Exile 2 even in this interstitial time between major updates, improving some of the loot issues and other problems that Dawn of the Hunt had. Patch 0.2.1 should be dropping any second now, which has further loot improvements, a whole-ass Expedition revamp, and new chase uniques. It also fixes some major issues—I knew Hidden Grotto was a pain, but did you know that it was 37.5% of all maps on the atlas? And apparently the chaos flowers in Ritual were responsible for fifty percent of player deaths in the endgame? Yeesh.

Dune Awakening’s creative director speaks on the end game, and how the Landsraad will give key roles to crafter and killer alike

As of writing, Dune Awakening just got its final dev stream going over the mid and end game. These large chunks of the experience have been largely mysterious for the longest time, aside from brief mentions of the Deep Desert and the massive community effort required to interact with arguably the game’s most exciting feature: The Landsraad system.

The Landsraad system, a supercharged weekly selection of rotating tasks that’ll require a faction-wide push for certain objectives, aims to provide a set of goals for every kind of player that’ll be filling their face with Spice. But there’s so much more to dig into, which is why I sat down and talked to creative director Joel Bylos about what I feel may just be the best approach to community-focused gameplay in an MMO since Classic WoW’s Gates of Ahn’Qiraj.

This interview kicks off with Joel discussing what PvP means in Dune Awakening, and how it covers far more than people stabbing each other on the sands.

Bylos: It’s not actually direct fighting, but it’s like the Atrades versus the Harkonnen […] Some of them are just PvE objectives, like craft this many ornithopters and deliver them to this place. Doing this while you as a guild are under the Atreides, let’s say. You complete several tasks and you see that there’s another Atreides guild higher than you, which also creates guild politics within just the Atreides faction, and you’re like, “we want to beat that other guild who keep coming first.” Right?

So, there’s also that as well as the conflict between the two factions, which is like, “The Harkonnen won the Landsraad this week. The traders need to get our s*** together and beat them for the next week.” Right? So, it’s both of those things in tandem.

VG247: When I was in Oslo, a comparison you made was to classic WoW in terms of your ideas in terms ofdesign. So, using that for my own comparison, it reminds me sort of like the Ahn’ Qiraj gate opening, where different guilds can either go and fight and kill bugs, or go and do PvP content, or they can make bandages and do herbalism and it all contributes to one big effort.

Bylos: Exactly. The Landsraad is an activity driver, right? It points people to activities at the end game. There’s something there for everyone. If you don’t like PvP, or rather when I say PvP I always think of PvP as any activity you do against another player even, if it If you don’t direct conflict as in shooting people in the face, that’s fine you can contribute by crafting things. There are some Landsraad tasks that are just to go run these PvE areas of the game and kill 30, 300 or 3,000 slavers this week in order for you to win our vote in the Landsraad.

PvE players can go do that. People who love running dungeons can go do that. It’s an activity driver that points to all of the activities at the end of the game, and that’s kind of the whole point of the Landsraad.

VG247: Would you say it’s fair to say that in terms of what players will be doing on in the end game, once they’ve put in their 100 hours and they’ve got their big base, it’s the Landsraad system. I am a PVE lover. I love crafting stuff. Blah blah blah. It all plays into this one system.

Bylos: The Landsraad system, I’m dumbing it down a little bit with this example, but you have a daily quest system in a lot of MMO type games where they’re like “here’s some small activities for you.” This is us saying here are weekly activities that are meaningful and actually change the server right, and then it is like okay s let’s work together and compete against the other faction. Yeah.

VG247: That’s interesting because I looked at some of the Landsraad bonuses you get, and I saw one that was a ranged damage increase and that immediately set off red flags, like Jesus that sounds crazy. But I suppose if the Landsraad system is also pushing players to do crafting and PvE and gathering etc, that you can say okay s*** we lost last week. They’ve got a range damage PvP is a bad idea. let’s focus on gathering all this and try and circumvent it. So you got this sort of weekly dynamic shift, right?

Bylos: Exactly that. There are even there’s crafting bonuses and things like that, so winners can craft more. So combat is the preferred [alternative] there. The big one I think that sort of excites people and scares people is we have the full PvP loot in the Deep Desert. So you can turn on the salvage rights decree which means that anyone who dies in the deep desert can be full PvP looted…

That’s not the base level of the game, but that’s an example. In a way I kind of joke around because I think it’s funny on a very meta level that actually PvP players and PVE players are in conflict to try and get that decree pushed through. The Harkonnen players who want to PvP are like we really want to push to the ability to full loot, and all the PvE players who are also on the Harkonnen faction are like, hell no we don’t! So within that faction they’re even fighting over who gets the decree right and I think that’s kind of interesting right? That’s politics.

VG247: It sounds like you have a deep love for community interaction. Not only in terms of the stereotypical sort of Alliance versus Horde dynamic, but in terms of how different players and the factions and subfactions interact with each other. Where does that love come from, and why is it so emphasized here?

Bylos: I’ve worked on MMOs most of my career, right? I started in 2008 or 2007 on Age of Conan,then Secret World. I worked on a Lego MMO for a bit. and then Conan Exiles, right? So, I’ve been doing these multiplayer games [for a while] and I think that the strength of these games is the multiplayer. You can just play a really well polished Ghost of Tsushima if you want a really good open world gaming experience. Why do people want to play these games with their friends? It’s because the social drama is what makes them interesting.

I just try to make mechanics that lean into it. Endgame I think is kind of the thing that I find nerve-wracking, it’s the part you don’t really know until everyone’s in there – how the endgame’s going to be. We’ve got guesses from how closed beta is going. We’ve seen how people are approaching it, but also there are different levels of how people approach things when a game launches versus how they are in a closed beta. And so it’s going to be really interesting.

We have all the microcosms. We have multiple worlds. And how are the Atreides and Harkonnen going to be on this server versus this server? I think that’s where I’m really interested in seeing how all this plays out.

VG247: In other games when super-dedicated players hit the end game they tend to hoard wealth, which I imagine could be a thorn to the Landsraad system. How will you combat that, so a leading faction or player guild don’t stay ahead?

Bylos:I mean people can hoard, so if you’re a smaller guild that can’t compete, we might save up for a time when we really need it. But there are 25 specific Landsraad tasks every week, and there’s a pool of 600 that can be drawn from. So you actually can’t really hoard with intent. If you say we’re going to hoard I don’t know silver las guns in case that delivery is required, it might not come up for eight months. So it’s not going to help your guild to hoard that much but you might hoard the precursor materials. You might hoard spice.

The other thing is the Landsraad is composed of 25 votes, and it gets revealed what each Landsraad envoy wants over time, but you can accelerate that process by sending in people to go find the envoys around the world and then bribe them with a chunk of spice. Once it’s revealed, it’s revealed for everybody in your faction. But if the Harkonnen reveal it, that doesn’t mean the Atreides get to see it. Eventually, we don’t have it in for launch, but eventually the plan is to have those envoys also give people quests that they can go do to reveal tasks.

VG247: I have one other major topic which is player expression. It seems like most of the progression is linear progression. As you get more gear, as you get better materials to build a better base etc… In terms of player expression, is that the extent of it? If I love PvP. I want to fly around my own and shoot down the Atreides players, is there any system that means another player can look at me in Harko village nad go “yeah, he’s a PVPer.”

Bylos: So the game has a huge customization system. A lot of the Landsraad rewards tie back to that customization system. So you can see the sort of a guy who has been doing tasks for house Dyvetz because he’s wearing the house Dyvetz colors right so that kind of stuff comes in. So you kind of can get access to different levels of social status by doing Landsraad tasks.

I think in terms of player expression, there are five kind of core archetypes that we chased in the game. We said, “Okay, how do these people have a role in our game?” And I think probably right now, yeah, I think three of them are very strong and two of them need a little more work to be stronger, that’s the stuff we’ll continue to work on in the post-launch.

Elden Ring Nightreign director says Fromsoft “kind of overlooked and neglected” playing as a duo, but 2 player-friendly “post-launch support” is being considered

Elden Ring Nightreign’s director says that while FromSoft prioritised getting the three-player and solo experiences the game offers just right for launch, folks who prefer to take on the challenges of the night as a pair might be getting some duos-focused “post-launch support”.

You can play Nightreign as a duo right out of the gate, provided you don’t mind being matched up with a random third wheel to make up your team, much in the same way anyone playing solo will end up with two strangers that gaming law dictates will either be unbelievably skilled or utterly hopeless.

Speaking to IGN, Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki was asked why the game doesn’t have an option for a duo to drop right into a game as a twosome if they wish.

“The simple answer is that this is simply something that was overlooked during development as just a two-player option, so we’re very sorry about that,” Ishizaki re-iterating that trios play the game’s three person teams naturally facilitate and solo play were the two options that it made most sense for the studio to focus on from the get go, especially when it came to balancing.

“We did put a lot of effort into creating this experience that was playable for solo players in as much as the rules and new systems allowed,” he explained, “So in putting all our efforts into that aspect, we kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect, but this is something that we are looking at and considering for post-launch support as well.”

It makes sense. Trios action is “at the core of Nightreign”, so that’s gotta be the main focus, and FromSoft games are famous for letting you solo bosses, so to cater to the usual single-player crowd playing by yourself has to be a priority in terms of striking a difficulty balance that’s in the Godskin Goldilocks zone. You’ve only got finite time and resources, so the couples take a backseat.

Ishizaki outlined the sort of work that’s gone into making sure the game for individual players a bit further on in the interview, explaining: “Solo play is generally encouraged and is a natural part of the game loop, but also in general for those solo players — and this might be something that’s difficult to notice in multiplayer — but the activeness and aggressiveness of enemies towards any one single player has been adjusted so that you don’t find yourself in any unreasonable multi-foe fights. And just generally, when you’re playing single player, the parameters adjust dynamically depending on the number of players in that session.”

Elden Ring Live-Action Movie In The Works With Ex Machina, Annihilation Director Alex Garland

From Software’s Elden Ring franchise is having a big year. We learned last month that it surpassed 30 million copies shipped, and the multiplayer spin-off, Elden Ring: Nightreign, launches next week. Now, publisher Bandai Namco has revealed it is working on a live-action film adaptation of Elden Ring, and it’s tapped production company A24 (Hereditary, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and the in-the-works Death Stranding adaptation) and director Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation, Civil War) to helm it.

Unfortunately, this announcement is as mysterious and filled with unknowns. There’s no word on what parts of Elden Ring the film will adapt, who’s writing the movie, or when it’s planning to hit theaters.

 

Elden Ring launched in February of 2022 and quickly became a phenomenon, selling 12 million copies in less than three weeks. Game Informer gave it a 10 out of 10 in our review, and we loved its Shadow of the Erdtree expansion too.

While waiting to learn more about this adaptation, catch up on Elden Ring: Nightreign before it hits PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on May 30.

The long-rumoured Elden Ring live-action movie has now been officially confirmed, with production house A24 and director Alex Garland at the helm. Yep, watch out Super Mario Bros and Minecraft, FromSoft is sending a legion of souls-loving nerds after your box office records.

It’s taken a while for the chatter about this kovie possibly being a thing to cyrystalise into something 100% solid, but at least now we won’t have to deal with George R.R Martin being all coy about it, with the author having been brought on as a producer.

Ex Machina and Civil War director Alex Garland will write and direct this ER film, with R. R. Martin, Peter Rice, Vince Gerardis, as well as DNA Films duo Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich, attatched as producers (thanks, Deadline). There doesn’t look to be any word yet as to how involved Hidetaka Miyazaki or any other FromSoftware devs will be in the project.

There are also no plot details right now, so for all we know Radahn’s tiny horse is the main character. Maybe it’s a musical in which he’s followed around by an Albinauric chorus with voices that’d make Pavarotti blush. Whatever happens, if Malenia pops up on screen, I’d wager we’ll get clips of cinemas erupting into chaos like we did with the Minecraft movie’s Chicken Jockey.
