The next season of Diablo IV adds extra challenges to the endgame

by admin June 24, 2025

Diablo IV has been demonically chugging along since the release of the major Vessel of Hatred expansion last fall. The seasonal model usually brings temporary gameplay updates and storylines, but when Season 9 hits on July 1, it will add a couple of useful permanent changes. First, console players are getting support for mouse and keyboard controls. Second, there will be new additions to Nightmare Dungeons.

The endgame of Diablo IV involves a lot of grinding Nightmare Dungeons, so even with a healthy dose of procedural generation, the landscape of those challenges starts to feel overly familiar. Season 9 will add some new wrinkles to the tile sets. Horadric Strongrooms are micro-dungeons within the Nightmare Dungeon that offer big potential rewards as well as a buff for the remainder of the main dungeon. Escalating Nightmares are a trio of dungeons in increasing challenges, and when tackled at Torment difficulty, they conclude with a riff on the Astaroth boss fight.

It’ll be a while yet before the developers bring another expansion on the scale of Vessel of Hatred, but Blizzard has been providing new twists on the game each season for the players who log hundreds of hours in Diablo IV. The Season 9 permanent additions, which also include some brand new dungeon affixes, could help keep things challenging and interesting for the game’s hardcore fans.

Diablo 4 Season 9 Will Bring Big, Permanent Changes To Nightmare Dungeons

by admin June 24, 2025

One of Diablo 4’s main endgame activities, Nightmare dungeons, will be permanently changed come Season 9, as Blizzard looks to make them both more challenging and surprising going forward.

As detailed in a new blog post, when Season 9 launches July 1, Nightmare dungeons will receive some major updates. Most notably, there will be a new activity within them called Horadric Strongrooms. Described as a “potent micro-dungeon,” strongrooms will be found more frequently on higher Torment difficulties and can also be reliably found by using a Nightmare dungeon sigil that guarantees the appearance of a strongroom.

Once players are inside the dungeon, players can discover a portal that will take them to the strongroom. In a system somewhat similar to Diablo 4’s Infernal Hordes activity, players will be able to select from a number of statues that add modifiers to the strongroom, increasing the challenge but also the rewards.

Players will then need to attune themselves with the strongroom by slaying enemies within the vicinity of Horadric Pillars within a time limit. Those who complete the attunement process will be transported to the micro-dungeon’s final boss that when defeated will reward a Grand Horadric cache that scales its rewards based on the amount of attunement players earned. These caches will include Obducite as a reward, an endgame material needed to Masterwork weapons and armor. Completing the strongroom will also grant a buff that lasts for the remainder of the Nightmare dungeon, which a chance to receive more XP from monsters, increased reputation gains, increased Obducite drops, 25% more gold, or Horadric Phial drops (a seasonal item that is used to make Horadric Jewels).

There will, however, be another new way to experience Nightmare dungeons–Escalating Nightmares. This new endgame activity is a sequence of three Nightmare dungeons that see dungeon affixes stack from one to the next, with monster difficulty additionally increasing for each subsequent dungeon.

To access an Escalating Nightmare, players will need to find Escalation Sigils from completing Horadric Strongrooms. In pre-Torment difficulties, completing all three dungeons will finish the Escalating Nightmare. However, those playing on Torment difficulties will instead be transported to a boss fight, where players will take on a new version of Astaroth from the Diablo 4 main campaign. Players will need to defeat both Astaroth and his steed, which will become separate bosses over the course of the fight. Defeating Astaroth’s mount first will see it go into a resurrection state, after which it will rejoin the fight if players can’t defeat Astaroth in time. Astaroth can also be modified by Nightmare dungeon affixes, making the boss fight even more challenging.

A look at everything coming as part of Diablo 4 Season 9.

Last but not least, Nightmare dungeons will receive new affixes. Each Nightmare sigil will sport both a positive and negative affix. New positive affixes include the guaranteed appearance of specific shrines, increased XP gains, the appearance of Treasure Goblins, a guaranteed strongroom, equipment rewards, and currency drops.

While the Nightmare dungeon changes will be permanent additions to Diablo 4, Season 9 will additionally introduce new seasonal mechanics for a limited-time. Players will be able to create and modify Horadric Spells to compliment their builds, and can further augment them using new Horadric Jewels that can be slotted into amulets and rings. One Horadric teleport spell in particular might be

Updates to Nightmare dungeons are just the latest permanent changes to come as part of a Diablo 4 season. Season 8 overhauled the game’s endgame boss ladder, while previous seasons, like Loot Reborn, reworked Diablo 4’s entire gear progression system. Diablo 4 Season 9 is not, however, bringing changes to the game’s new (and unpopular) Reliquary battle pass system, though Blizzard has stated it is listening to player feedback.

Diablo 4 Season 9 will be detailed this Friday – and you even get an in-game skin for watching the reveal live

by admin June 23, 2025

After a bit of a wait, Blizzard has officially set a date for the next Diablo 4 livestream. The focus of the show will, unsurprisingly, be on Season 9: Sins of the Horadrim. Season 9 kicks off in about a week, so it’s almost time for one last look at what’s coming.

Of course, this won’t technically be our first-ever look at the new content, as much of it was in the Season 9 PTR (Public Test Realm) held towards the end of May. That said, there are definitely a couple of reasons to tune in.

The Diablo 4 Season 9: Sins of the Horadrim livestream is scheduled for this Friday, June 27. Blizzard has hosted these sort of livestreams on Fridays before, but the developer typically goes for a Thursday – or even earlier in the week – spot.

Regardless, the show will kick off at the usual times: 11am PT, 2pm ET, 7pm BST. You’ll be able to watch it on all the official Diablo channels – YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, and TikTok. The livestream will offer one final look at Sins of the Horadrim, which is set to arrive on June 30.

More specifically, we’ll get an updated look at the new seasonal questline, new battle pass, the Horadric Spellcraft mechanic, Escalating Nightmares endgame activity, and more. This will also be a great opportunity to see what’s actually changed based on PTR feedback.

Worth tuning in for? | Image credit: Blizzard Entertainment.

As usual, we’re also also getting a preview of the higher-level balance changes coming with Season 9, both for characters as well as general gameplay. Several members of the Diablo 4 development team will be guiding us through the showcase, and there’s going to be a Q&A segment to close it off.

Blizzard is also bringing back the post-show Sanctuary Sitdown chat, which will see community host Nacho join Aislyn Hall to talk more about the new season, and answer questions from Discord members.

There’s something new this time, too. Blizzard is offering anyone who watches Diablo 4 on Twitch while the Developer Update is live a free skin. It does not need to be the main Diablo 4 livestream itself, and you only need to watch for 30 minutes to earn the Lacuni’s Pupil two-handed Sorcerer Staff.

“Hotline Miami meets Diablo” in Slaughter Void’s ultraviolent psychedelia

by admin June 22, 2025

Nothing is more powerful, Hotline Miami and its -likes teach us, than a good corner from which to lurk and swing sharp objects at conga lines of investigating idiots, each somehow convinced that although he just watched four mates get blade-battered in that exact spot by some murdercrazed invisible entity, he will personally be the one that overcomes the unassailable instant death corner with all his favourite bits intact.

Perhaps this is the Slaughter Void this lethal arcade action game speaks of, although, hang on: it’s got its own creation myth, in which a betrayed deity unleashes her anguish and makes everything at least 60% more violent and shit than it was previously. The claret-spattered cosmic psychedelia was enough to sucker me in alone, but there’s some nicely written fiction here too. It’s the kind that just pokes its horns through the walls occasionally, giving you enough of a sense of the entire beast to feel like you’re entering somewhere with history, without bogging down all that good good corner slaughter.

Watch on YouTube

Where the stated Diablo influences start to creep in is through a few neat combat twists that transform Hotline Miami’s crests and lulls of situational disempowerment into a sort of weaving tactical bloodlust. You’ll still get squished instantly if you slip up, but you get temporary armour and speed boosts for kill streaks, and you can access both ranged and melee at the same time. There’s also a fat area-of-effect super for dealing with groups. Features ahoy:

Fast paced, brutal action: Combat in SLAUGHTER VOID is quick and merciless. A single hit will kill you, but the same goes for (most of) your enemies- agility and aggression are essential.

Be your own harbinger of destruction: Through a deluge of hand-crafted levels, carve your own bloody path with unique combinations of weapons and relics to achieve maximum slaughter.

Dynamic Dismemberment: Quick death is not enough. The faster you kill, the more havoc you wreak upon your foes, severing and splattering them into multiple pieces. The more you slaughter, the more you reap, harvesting valuable loot from their corpses to spend on upgrades, items, and more.

To the Victor the Spoils: Compete to be the fastest on the leaderboards as you decimate enemies from this gore-soaked void to the next.

You can find a demo on Steam here. More importantly, you can switch out your axe for a very large hammer.

Diablo 4 Season 8 Players Are Fed Up With Its Bugged Lilith Boss Fight

by admin June 22, 2025

Diablo 4 Season 8 revamped its endgame bosses, including the game’s first “pinnacle” boss, the Echo of Lilith. While the revamp did make bosses more rewarding, it didn’t do much to make the already annoying Lilith boss fight any better, and players are now reporting an invincibility bug that is making matters even worse.

As spotted on Reddit, players are encountering a bug where Lilith becomes unkillable. Players encountering the Lilith bug are reporting the ability to get her to around 33-35% health, after which she becomes entirely immune to damage and never transitions into her second phase.

Now Playing: Diablo 4 x Berserk | Official Gameplay Trailer

Nobody is quite sure what the reason for the bug is. Some players report it happening while in a full party, while others said it happened to them playing solo. A few players theorize that the bug could be coming as a result of player’s dealing too much damage.

Even before her Season 8 rework, Lilith has always been a hard fight (despite her being defeated for the first time less than a week after Diablo 4 came out). Her various phases made her a significant challenge unless players could deal enough damage to largely ignore the fight’s oppressive mechanics.

Unfortunately, in Season 8, players are now forced to deal with those mechanics even more than before. Even if a player can deal an incredible amount of damage, it’s impossible to “brute force” through the phases, as attacks that would previously transition her into the next phase will instead only drop her health to a specific percentage. This makes for extended periods of time during where Lilith is entirely immune to damage, forcing players to dodge her various projectiles and spike waves which inflict a stacking debuff that will eventually one-shot players for a mistake.

A bug making Lilith unkillable wouldn’t be the biggest deal if Blizzard hadn’t tied an important reward, a Resplendent Spark used to create Mythic Uniques, to the first time players kill her each season. Despite the annoying nature of the boss fight, players almost always want to defeat her at least once to claim the Spark before ignoring the boss for the rest of the season. That, however, isn’t exactly possible when she can’t be killed.

Blizzard hasn’t issued a response to the thread on Reddit or offered an ETA on when players can expect a fix. Broken boss fights aren’t the only issue Diablo 4 players are contending with, as the game’s new Reliquary battle pass has also drawn criticism for its poor design. Blizzard has stated its looking to make changes to Diablo 4’s Reliquary system in the future, partially out of response to Diablo 4’s disappointing Berserk crossover, but that those changes won’t be arriving as part of its upcoming Season 9. Diablo 4 Season 9, Sins of the Horadrim, is set to arrive on July 1 and will let players craft their own spells.

Diablo 4’s Anniversary Celebration event won’t be one to remember for its rewards, but at least you won’t have to pay real money for it

by admin June 4, 2025

The time has come to celebrate the second anniversary of Diablo 4. Yes, the game has been out for two years now, even if it does not feel like it’s been that long. And with every anniversary, of course, comes a new event from Blizzard designed to commemorate it.

The second Anniversary Celebration is now live in-game. And, honestly, does not feel like that much of a big deal. At all.

The Diablo 4 Second Anniversary event is available from now until Tuesday, 17th June, giving you about two weeks to take part in the muted festivities. And you’d only really want to do that, of course, if you care about the rewards you could get from grinding through the activities; rewards which this event does actually have, even if they’re nothing to really write home about.

Now that Diablo 4 has adopted Call of Duty’s battle pass system, there’s a new Event Reliquary (which is essentially a mini-battle pass) that runs parallel to the Season 8 Reliquary. While the new system does offer more utility, and is practically designed for situations like this, it has not been well received by players because of how little of the premium currency it offers compared to the old style.

But we’re not here to talk about that, we’re here to reveal the rewards… all six of them. As part of the event Reliquary, you’ll be able to exchange your Gold for these rewards:

  • Sunflame Lantern Mount Trophy.
  • Burning Dawn Banner Mount Trophy.
  • Sunraiser Sword Cosmetic.
  • Sunflame Sword Two-Handed Sword Cosmetic.
  • Burning Barbs Polearm Cosmetic.
  • Burning Dawn Bow Cosmetic.

Look at my horse, my horse is amazing. | Image credit: Blizzard

Once you’ve collected all six of the skins above, you’ll automatically earn The Burning Dawn Mount Armor. Having Gold set as the currency of this particular event is certainly interesting, mainly because it doesn’t involve some other paid currency, or any sort of in-game grinding. You will, of course, need to have enough Gold to be able to afford everything, but farming Gold isn’t difficult, and gives you the freedom to do whatever you want in the game (rather than force you into certain time-gated events).

The recent Berserk collaboration event certainly reminded everyone why limited-time events exist to begin with, with its meagre in-game rewards, and a skin pack that would’ve run you £110 if you wanted the actually good cosmetics.

Given that, many players will no doubt be happy to learn that there are zero skins being sold for real money as part of the Anniversary event. As a bonus, a Mother’s Blessing event will also be running right alongside the two-year party, giving everyone 35 percent extra XP, and 50 percent extra Gold.

This improved version of Mother’s Blessing also means each time you turn in your Grim Favors at the Tree of Whispers, you’ll receive an extra cache, which includes items you’d find in a Collection of Chaos cache. If you’ve been away from the game for a while, or don’t know what that means, trust me when I say: it’s a pretty good boon to have.

Diablo 4 Masterworking is now less expensive, but only when it comes to materials

by admin May 30, 2025

Diablo 4 received a new update overnight that delivered a small, but effective change to the cost of Masterworking in the game. More specifically, Masterworking items in Ranks 1 through 4 will now be less expensive.

This change does not affect the Gold and Obducite cost, however, it only lowers the number of basic materials required for each operation.

The new patch, version 2.2.2, rolled out on all platforms on Tuesday. Blizzard explained that it doesn’t want players to avoid engaging with Masterworking as a result of its material costs, which is why the change was made.

Obducite and Gold costs aren’t typically a problem in those early ranks, but attempting several Masterwork Resets in a short while will quickly cause you to run out of materials, despite having enough Obducite and Gold to afford the rolls.

The patch also disabled DirectStorage on PC, a feature that allows for faster load times when the game is installed on a supported NVMe drive. DirectStorage may be responsible for some performance issues, so Blizzard has disabled it while it investigates. You can still enable it, if you must, you’ll just need to add ‘-enableds’ as a launch command to Diablo 4 through Battlenet.

Those damned Reliquaries! | Image credit: Blizzard Entertainment.

Elsewhere in the patch, there’s a host of bug fixes that affect a wide range of different parts of the game. In particular, it addresses a lot of issues with the Screen Reader, which, since the Season 8 launch, stopped reading certain areas of the UI – including the menu for the new Reliquary battle pass system.

You can read the full set of changes on Blizzard’s blog, which also covers UI, gameplay, and Season 8-specific fixes in patch 2.2.2.

Separately, Tuesday also marked the start of the Season 9 PTR, which, among other things, introduces a new endgame activity, makes several changes to dungeons and more. The PTR ends June 3.

Diablo 4 Season 9 Will Let Players Build Their Own Spells

by admin May 26, 2025

Ahead of Diablo 4 Season 9’s arrival on the game’s public-test server on May 27, Blizzard has revealed players will be able to build their own spells next season.

Titled Sins of the Horadrim, players in Season 9 will be able use the new Horadric Spellcraft system to tailor-make a powerful spell to their liking. As detailed by Blizzard, spells will consist of three components–Catalysts, Infusions, and Arcana.

Now Playing: Diablo 4 x Berserk | Official Full Animated Reveal Trailer

Catalysts are the base power of the spell, with Blizzard describing it as the “foundation.” There are six Catalysts to choose from, like Disintegrate and Propulsion, that will give the spell its form and function.

Next are Infusions, which imbue the spell with its elemental damage type and some special effects. Lastly, players can equip three Arcana, which are used to modify the spell in a variety of ways, from granting players Unstoppable after using their Horadric spell to gaining Stealth for several seconds after use. Some Legendary Arcana grant fairly powerful effects, like the Floaty Bobble Arcana, which adds a Blink component to the spell, or the Bloody Charm, which simply executes non-boss enemies with 10% life or less when the spell is activated.

The Horadric Spellcraft system isn’t entirely different from how seasonal powers have worked in previous seasons (a common complaint among the playerbase), but does seem to give players more flexibility than before in terms of both what powers and what damage types they want to use.

However, Horadric Spellcrafting will just be one component of Season 9. Blizzard, in its quest, to continue improving base elements of Diablo 4’s endgame (as detailed in Diablo 4’s 2025 roadmap) is also putting a heavy emphasis on Nightmare dungeons, with new positive affixes that will benefit players in the form of more specialized crafting rewards or specific types of gear. Players will also (finally) be able to jump into a new Nightmare dungeon while still inside a different one, rather than having to leave the dungeon.

New for the season will be Horadric Strongrooms and Escalating Nightmares. Strongrooms are mini-dungeons inside Nightmare dungeons where players will use a wayfinder to find a hidden Horadric vault. Players will need to battle through demons in a set amount of time in order to claim the Strongroom’s rewards, and the difficulty of the Strongroom, and its rewards, can be adjusted and increased by activating various modifiers similar to players add modifiers in the Infernal Hordes activity. Additionally, players earn Horadric Jewels to put in their gear to further modify their Horadric spell.

Escalating Nightmares is a new spin on Nightmare dungeons that sees the effects of three different Nightmare dungeons stack in succession. Players will need to earn Escalation Sigils from Horadric Storerooms to challenge the Escalating Nightmares. Those who survive all three dungeons in succession will then battle against a new boss encounter with Astaroth, who players may remember from Diablo 4’s base campaign.

Diablo 4 Season 9 will be playable on the game’s PTR from May 27 to June 3, as Blizzard looks to test the season’s new systems as well as various balance changes and new Unique items. According to Diablo 4’s in-game timers, Season 9 proper will begin July 1.

Meanwhile, Diablo 4 Season 8, Belial’s Return, is in full swing, having revamped the game’s endgame boss cycle and battle pass (the latter of which hasn’t exactly gone over well). The season also marked Diablo 4’s first external IP collab with Berserk, even if the event itself is largely a wasted opportunity.

Diablo 4’s Season 9 finally lets us fight Astaroth in the endgame, but the rest of what it brings feels like a re-skin of old systems

by admin May 24, 2025

Right on schedule, Blizzard delivered a long and detailed livestream covering Diablo 4’s upcoming patch 2.3.0 PTR (Public Test Realm). The developer revealed when the PTR will be going online, and what it’s actually going to include.

The PTR will, as previously revealed, only be available on PC through Battlenet. It will go live next week, on Tuesday, May 27, ending one week later on June 3.

As you may recall from the Diablo 4 roadmap, Season 9 is titled Sins of the Horadrim. The structure of the next season will be similar to recent ones: there’s going to be a new activity or two, with the new gameplay revolving mainly around powers you can acquire as you play said activities.

For Sins of the Horadrim, the new endgame activity is called Escalating Nightmares (previously Dungeon Escalation), and the powers will be Horadric Spellcraft. Astaroth will also return as part of the season.

The highlight of the new season is the ability to create Horadric Spells, a new system that relies on three elements to function: Catalysts, Infusions, and Arcana. Catalysts are the base, unmodified powers, which you can then alter with Infusions. This changes the elemental damage type of the spell, but you can also change the baseline power of it using Arcana.

The system, in essence, is a refresh of Season 7’s Witchcraft Powers, and is similar to Season 8’s Boss Powers in the way it works, too.

Look familiar? | Image credit: Blizzard Entertainment.

Something else being introduced with Sins of the Horadrim is Horadric Strongrooms. These are micro-dungeons that can be found within larger Nightmare Dungeons. Your goal is to claim some lost Horadric knowledge within, and fight your way out in time, as a timer kicks in after you trigger a Strongroom.

Doing so will earn you Horadric Attunement, which can later be exchanged for rewards. The chances of Horadric Strongrooms spawning increase the higher your Torment level, but you can also use Horadric Phials (a new seasonal currency) to increase your chance of finding them further. Some Nightmare Dungeon Sigils will also guarantee a Horadric Strongroom can be found within.

Horadric Strongrooms follow a similar dungeon design where you get to choose what sort of challenge you want to take on by interacting with one of the different Horadric Pillars. Once the ritual is performed and the pillar is satiated, you’ll get Horadric Attunement. At the end of it, there’s a boss you’ll need to fight to complete the run. Before you leave, you’ll get to use your Horadric Attunement to acquire a Horadric cache.

He’s back! | Image credit: Blizzard Entertainment.

The big new activity in Season 9 is Escalating Nightmares, which is a fancy name for a new chain of three Nightmare Dungeons, with nightmares escalating as you go through each. The main hook here is that each dungeon’s affixes stack with the next one, meaning the third in the chain will have affixes from all three. If you manage to go through all three, you’ll get to fight an Exalted version of Astaroth.

Triggering an instance of Escalating Nightmare requires an Escalation Sigil, which can be found in Horadric caches from the aforementioned Strongrooms (starting from Torment 1). The Astaroth fight itself is one of the most impressive and memorable fights from Diablo 4’s campaign, and players have been asking Blizzard since launch to bring it into the endgame.

This version has something of a mechanical twist, too. Astaroth will jump off his mount, essentially forcing you to fight both him and Amalgam. This isn’t just a visual trick, either, because slaying Amalgam before Astaroth sends the hound into a resurrection state that will put it back in the fight after some time.

Watch on YouTube

As you might have guessed, there’s a major focus on dungeons in Season 9. Blizzard is turning its gaze to dungeons across both the Seasonal, and Eternal Realms. This will encompass a few tweaks, as well as some new quality of life changes. You’ll soon be able to activate a Nightmare Sigil from within the Nightmare Dungeon itself once it’s complete, meaning you’ll be able to re-run the same one without having to leave and re-enter to create a new instance. The pool of Nightmare Dungeon affixes is also being bolstered with a set of new ones, available across both realms.

Then there’s Horadric Jewels, which will be available in Torment 1 and beyond. Completing a Strongroom has a chance to spawn Horadric Tomes, which, when consumed, let you craft Horadric Jewels. These are effectively gems, just with some powerful effects that play nicely with your Horadric Spells. You’ll also need Horadric Phials and Gem Fragments to craft them, and they can only be socketed into Amulets and Rings.

Catch up on the full change log on the Diablo 4 blog, which also includes PTR-specific boosts those taking part will need to rely on if they want to get into endgame content quickly.

Watch Blizzard, hopefully, distract you from Diablo 4 Season 8 by showing off what’s coming with Season 9 in dev livestream

by admin May 22, 2025

Blizzard is hoting the latest edition of its Campfire Chat developer livestream tonight. This one is going to be all about Diablo 4’s upcoming Season 9. Or, more specifically, it’s going to cover the patch 2.3.0 PTR (Public Test Realm), which will be opening its doors soon.

Among many other things, this is the show where the developer will outline why a PTR is needed at all, what to expect from the next major update/Season, as well as how to get involved.

If you feel like it’s a little too soon for a new PTR already in Diablo 4, you’re not wrong. We’re only a couple of weeks into Season 8, which is clearly going to be a shorter season compared to previous ones.

Season 8 had its own PTR for patch 2.2.0 back in March, and Season 9’s PTR is likely going to start before the end of this month, or early in June. The start date for the 2.3.0 PTR is just one of the things Blizzard developers will cover in tonight’s livestream.

Another topic of discussion is going to be Dungeon Escalation, the new activity coming to Diablo 4 with Season 9. Each season has a rotating activity, and this one is going to be next season’s version of that.

As always, this is going to be a dense show that ends with a Q&A segment. It all kicks off at 11am PT, 2pm ET, 7pm UK. You’ll be able to watch it on YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, and TikTok. We have the Twitch player embedded below, too, for your convenience.
