CD Projekt Red says The Witcher 4 will be a ‘more console-first development’

Digital Foundry interviewed CD Projekt Red and Epic about the Unreal Engine 5 tech demo for The Witcher 4 and it’s an interesting look at the state of the art when it comes to how many polygons you need to make a pine tree look all nice (answer: a lot). One of the first topics that came up was the fact this tech demo was shown running on a PlayStation 5 rather than a PC.

“We always do PC and we push and then we try to scale down,” said Charles Tremblay, VP of technology at CD Projekt Red. “But then we had so many problems in the past that we tried to see, OK, this time around we really want to be more console-first development, right? And then we worked with Unreal, with our partner, and then we saw the challenge—to realize the ambition that to make what we want at 60 fps on PS5 would be, you know, there would be work.”

While your mind might race back to Cyberpunk 2077’s PlayStation launch, which was so bad Sony pulled it from sale, it’s not like The Witcher 3 didn’t undergo a lot of heavy-duty patching shortly after its release either. Much as you or I might like CDPR to say that our platform of choice is their baby darling and the one they think of first when they wake up in the morning, obviously something has to change if The Witcher 4’s launch isn’t going to be another five-alarm fire. “The company started as a PC company and we definitely will want to have the best experience for the PC gamer for sure,” Tremblay said. “But it’s too early to say what will it mean for The Witcher 4.”

Silent Hill f just got a comprehensive deep dive during today’s Konami Press Start showcase.

This portion of the event introduced various developers to fans, and highlighted different aspects of the game including the shift to Japan, combat, monster design, and more.

It kicked off with Silent Hill series producer Motoi Okamato explaining why Silent Hill f has shifted to a Japanese setting. He states: “Silent Hill was a series that fused Western horror and Japanese horror, but as the series progressed, I felt that the essence of Japanese horror was lost”.

From there, we were introduced to Neobards and game producer Albert Lee, who described how the studio has approached the Japanese focus on Silent Hill f. Game designer Al Yang then took the spotlight, explaining how Neoboards iterated on the “uneasy charm and loneliness” of Ebisugaoka, where the game is set.

This narration from Yang can be heard while new gameplay footage of Silent Hill f can be seen. In it, we see Hinako explore Ebisugaoka, swing around a steel pipe, and generally be horrified by all the monsters and spooky locations she finds herself in.

Following this, Okamato returned to establish a key pillar of the game and its Japanese horror style, which he dubbed “beauty, but disturbing”. According to Yang, this concept was applied throughout the game, with the team working with artist Kera. This explanation came alongside concept art of different horrific looking monsters.

Silent Hill f is set to release on 25 September, and will be “more action oriented than the Silent Hill 2 remake”.

The brief reveal trailer was paired alongside the Silent Hill 1 intro theme, further confirming that this is the original game in the legendary horror series being remade.

This remake of the original 1999 game by Bloober Team, the developer responsible for the excellent Silent Hill 2 remake. That game received ample critical and commercial success, and in Eurogamer’s own review of the Silent Hill 2 remake, Vikki Blake noted: “Against the odds, Bloober Team has delivered a remake that both expands Silent Hill 2 in just the right places, and gives careful attention to what it preserves.”

This will be the first time Silent Hill 1 has gotten the remake treatment, although it was reimagined back in 2009 with Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. That game, released on the Wii and later ported to the PS2, was an interesting spin on the game that started it all.

Bloober Team is also working on Cronos: The New Dawn, which got a release date announcement at Summer Game Fest only a few days ago.

Safe Establishes New Development Firm to Attract Institutions and Tackle Crypto’s ‘Cyber Warfare’ Era

Safe, the popular multiparty crypto wallet previously called Gnosis Safe, has launched a new development unit, Safe Labs, in a move aimed at consolidating its operations and sharpening its product roadmap after it was targeted in February’s $1.4 billion ByBit hack — the largest crypto heist to date.

The new entity will serve as the core development arm of Safe, which until now had outsourced technical work to a separate development firm, a structure commonly used across the crypto industry, Safe Labs Chief Executive Rahul Rumalla said on Wednesday. Safe Labs will operate directly under the umbrella of the Safe Foundation, a nonprofit organization.

In an interview with CoinDesk, Rumalla said the transition reflects a broader strategy shift toward building products that can meet both the ideological standards of cypherpunk culture and the practical demands of enterprise clients.

“This framework that we are forced to operate in — it actually forces you to compromise one over the other: If you want more security, you have to compromise on convenience, and if you want more convenience, you compromise on security,” Rumalla said.

“We at Safe Labs, we step back and we reject this framework. We don’t want to operate in this model where we have to compromise one over the other.”

Post-Hack Pivot

According to Rumalla, the ByBit hack was a “catalyst” for the creation of Safe Labs.

While Safe’s core smart contracts remained uncompromised, its user-facing web application was infiltrated with malicious code by North Korea’s Lazarus Group. That attack enabled the hackers to trick ByBit’s CEO into signing off on a transaction that rerouted funds into their control.

“What we saw with an attack like this is that our core values were used against us,” Rumalla said. “Anonymity, privacy, self-custody, transparency, open source — these were used against us.”

Despite the breach, Rumalla said user confidence in the Safe platform remained strong. The application saw “practically no churn” in the aftermath and continues to process 10% of all transaction volume across Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible networks.

“We’re not defending against cyberattacks,” Rumalla said. “We are defending cyber warfare, and that requires a mindset shift — not just at the project level, not at the company level, but as Ethereum or even crypto as a whole.”

From Ideals to Infrastructure

The move to formalize internal development echoes similar shifts by other major protocols, including Morpho and Polygon, which have both recently made moves to streamline decision-making and improve accountability with more traditional organizational structures.

In parallel, Safe Labs is also refocusing on product design. The team is currently working on a “V2” version of its wallet, which Rumalla described as more “opinionated” — meaning bolder product direction, particularly for institutional users.

“What we’re going to be launching and testing in the future is a subscription plan, essentially, that’s called Safe Pro — or Safe for enterprises, Safe for institutions — very much around that realm,” he said. “We’re going to basically package this opinionated product that’s more for the user segments that have higher security needs and more customization appetite.”

“We need to operate at startup speed,” Rumalla added. “That in itself is the premise of why we need to operate as a separate, independent entity. We need to align where we need to align, which is on the mission, but we need to be a bit more independent in terms of how we execute.”

With more than $60 billion in total value locked and over $1 trillion in historical transaction volume, according to Rumalla, Safe remains one of crypto’s most battle-tested self-custody platforms. The team, now roughly 40 strong and based in Berlin, is betting that its next chapter — one that embraces opinionated product design without sacrificing its open-source ethos — will help define how wallets look in a world heading toward a trillion-dollar on-chain economy.

“Our mission is simple: making self custody easy and secure,” Rumalla said. “That’s a win for everybody.”

New Dragon Age: The Veilguard report reveals more about turbulent development, including Forspoken-prompted shift from snark to seriousness

A fresh report has shed a bit more light on Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s famously difficult time in development, offering info on culture clashes between BioWare’s different teams, and revealing that the game was re-written due to concerns about its banter being too snarky.

The report, from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, goes through the whole sordid story of Veilguard’s journey from in-the-works single player game, to in-the-works online thing, back to in-the-works single player thing, parts of which you’re likely familiar with at this point. There’s also a bunch of context as to how wider events across the studio and publisher EA influenced the game that ended up hitting shelves after a decade or so of development.

The new revelations tell how the tone of the game’s dialogue, as well as the choices and consequences, had to be revamped following the switch from multiplayer back to single player in 2020.

Schreier emphasises that this shift didn’t come with a full reset of the project, which meant developers had to work on something with lots of vestigial features intended for an entirely different type of game.

An alpha build at the end of 2022 flagged that testers believed Veilguard didn’t have satisfying or meaty enough choices and consequences to live up to BioWare’s previous works, another problem attributed to the game having been designed for multiplayer, according to the devs Schreier spoke to. Cue extra work to add in more choices, including an important choice between saving two cities, and a struggle to ensure these decisions played into the narrative further down the road.

The report also cites concerns about the reception to the dialogue of Square Enix’s Forspoken as having led to a rewrite for Veilguard’s chatter. This was an attempt to drag it away from the “snarky tone” that’d been pencilled in as part of the multiplayer vision, and instead “make it sound more serious”. Similarly, the game’s June 2024 reveal trailer reportedly raised concerns about EA’s ability to market the game in a way that didn’t feel a bit Fortnitey.

There’s also plenty of detail regarding “internal friction” between Dragon Age tream that were originally working on the game and the Mass Effect team EA drafted in for the project’s final push around 2023, with cultural differences between the two teams adding to what sounds like it was already a pretty unpleasant mix of pressuresand forces at play.

In the aftermath of Veilguard and the layoffs at BioWare that followed its release, a smaller team’s left beavering away on on Mass Effect 5, with plenty of questions still hanging over the RPG studio’s future. It’s a sad state of affairs to put it mildly, especially given that while it definitely isn’t everyone’s cup of tea – I found what I played to be decent fun and you can read Nic’s verdict here – the version of Veilguard we got was far from a complete trainwreck.

Monolith Soft has officially announced the company helped with the development of Mario Kart World.

The developer, which previously assisted with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Splatoon 2 has stated on social media it developed the “fields and character designs” for the Nintendo Switch 2 racing game.

The studio has a history of open world video game development, becoming something of an expert in that particular area given the time spent on recent Zelda titles as well as its own Xenoblade releases. As such it makes sense why Nintendo would bring Monolith Soft over for Mario Kart World given the games’ shift to a non-linear format.

In 2024, Nintendo became the sole owner of Monolith Soft after years of holding roughly 80 percent of the company since 2007. In 2011, Nintendo would increase its stake to 97 percent of the company, after which those working there contributed to popular Nintendo series like Animal Crossing, Splatoon, and Zelda.

In recent years, Monolith Soft has largely been known for its ongoing Xenoblade series. In 2022 Xenoblade Chronicles 3 was released to high critical praise, and would continue this trend in 2025 with Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition.

The original version of Xenoblade Chronicles X was something of a technical marvel in the Wii U, and its Switch version brought that same quality packaged with various visual updates, dynamic resolution scaling, and greater environment detail among other tweaks and improvements.

Ethereum Foundation Restructures R&D Division, Plans ‘Rethink’ on Design and Development

Less than a month after the Pectra Upgrade, the Ethereum Foundation believes that the world’s second-largest crypto, both as a technology and as an ecosystem, is approaching major breakthroughs with higher stakes for a broader audience.

Yet those stakes could be at risk if the people steering it are entrenched in what it calls a messy process: shipping protocol.

“We must rethink our current approach to designing, developing, and stewarding the protocol,” the foundation wrote Monday, announcing the restructuring of its Protocol Research & Development teams.

The move is set to consolidate development efforts under a new “Protocol” division, focusing on three immediate goals. The foundation touts the move as a way to “respond proactively” to demands that it claims are “hard to articulate and even harder to fulfill.”

The overhaul divides teams into three initiatives: scaling the main blockchain (Layer 1), scaling blobs for data storage, and improving the user experience.



Each initiative is assigned dedicated leadership: Tim Beiko and Ansgar Dietrichs are responsible for L1 scaling, Alex Stokes and Francesco D’Amato will oversee blob scaling, while Barnabé Monnot and Josh Rudolf are tasked with improving user experience.

But not everyone is staying and making the cut for Protocol. Some members “won’t be continuing with the Ethereum Foundation,” it said, while encouraging ecosystem projects to recruit departing talent.

Strategic roles

The three teams will be supported by Dankrad Feist, a prominent researcher and cryptographer renowned for “Danksharding,” a blockchain optimization process named after him. Feist will work as strategic advisor to all tracks.

Last year, Feist was involved in a conflict of interest controversy, when he, alongside fellow core developer Justin Drake, confirmed they received tokens for their advisory relationship with EigenLayer, a restaking protocol for Ethereum.

“It is clear that relying on culture and individual judgment has not been sufficient, and we have been working on a formal policy to address this,” Aya Miyaguchi, the foundation’s former Executive Director, said at the time.

Still, the Ethereum Foundation’s efforts at restructuring with Protocol aim to bridge a perceived gap between research and actual implementation.

Previous upgrades, such as Pectra, faced several hurdles: testnet failures earlier this year delayed the rollout by weeks as developers scrambled to patch bugs.

Now, through Protocol, the foundation is attempting to show “the world is ready for the world computer.”

RX 9060 XT 16GB graphics cards with faster clocks than 8GB models appear to be in development

It appears that memory will not be the only differentiator between AMD’s RX 9060 XT 16GB and 8GB GPUs. According to VideoCardz, PowerColor is preparing certain RX 9060 XT models, where the 16GB variant features slightly higher clock speeds than its 8GB counterpart. While we checked models from other AIBs, most have not yet listed their frequencies, so we will likely need to wait until the embargo lifts to confirm wider adoption of this strategy.

AMD introduced the RX 9060 XT family of budget GPUs at Computex last month. Much like the RTX 5060 Ti family, AMD has segmented these GPUs into 8GB ($299) and 16GB ($349) models. Both GPUs are powered by the same Navi 48 core, with 2,048 Stream Processors or 32 Compute Units, with an advertised boost clock of 3.13 GHz. The GPUs are set to launch on June 5, with the review embargo likely lifting a day earlier, as typically seen.

Based on data secured by VideoCardz, PowerColor is preparing seven RX 9060 XT models across its Reaper and Hellhound designations. Specifically, the Reaper family shows the RX 9060 XT 16GB model with a 3.23 GHz boost clock and a 2.62 GHz game clock, compared to the 8GB model’s 3.13 GHz boost and 2.53 GHz game clock. This 2-3% frequency delta, though minor, indicates that Reaper-based 8GB models will stick to reference clocks, rather than receiving a factory-overclocked boost like their 16GB siblings.

We don’t anticipate a huge performance difference, but this could be a wider trend, as VideoCardz also spotted similar product differentiation from Yeston. That being said, PowerColor’s Hellhound line is reported to equip both RX 9060 XT models with similar clock speeds (3.31 GHz Boost, 2.74 GHz Game), suggesting this practice will likely not be universal.

While both models employ the same silicon, factory overclocking requires further validation and testing, translating to increased costs for board partners. This is because every GPU needs to be vetted thoroughly to ensure no stability issues arise when these cards end up in the hands of consumers. A lot of these 8GB cards are probably earmarked for eSports cafés in the Asian market, which purchase GPUs in bulk. This can explain why AIBs are favoring reference clock speeds, for better operational stability and cost-effectiveness on their end.

Another plausible explanation may be that consumer demand or tight margins simply do not provide enough incentive to overclock a model, whose compute power is already bound by its VRAM capacity. You can always overclock your GPU manually for better performance. These factory-overclocked cards simply provide a slight boost to save you the effort.
