Nintendo World Championships Deluxe Set Drops To Best Price Yet

by admin August 25, 2025

Best Buy has a handful of awesome deals on first-party Nintendo Switch games this week. Regardless of whether you prefer physical or digital games, you can take advantage of almost all of the offers. The exception is Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition – Deluxe Set, because the eShop cannot dispense collectibles through the vents on your console. On sale for a new all-time best price of $40 (was $60), the retro-fueled party game’s collector’s edition comes packaged in an oversized display box filled with nostalgic merch.

Inside the box, you’ll find a replica gold NES cartridge with a sleeve and display stand, 13 Nintendo art cards, and five enamel pins featuring 8-bit depictions of Mario, Link, Samus, and Donkey Kong as well as the Nintendo World Championships logo.

Nintendo Switch Game Deals at Best Buy

Here’s a list of the Switch exclusives on sale at Best Buy. The other one that stands out is Emio – The Smiling Man, as this is the first discount yet for the latest entry in Nintendo’s Famicom Detective Club series. Walmart and Best Buy have a couple of these Switch game deals, too.

$40 (was $60)

We’ve only seen one other discount for the Deluxe Set since Nintendo World World Championships: NES Edition launched in July 2024; Best Buy offered a $10 discount right before Christmas last year. Since then, the Deluxe Set has disappeared from most major retailers. GameStop is the only other retailer with units, but buying from there means paying full price. In short, Switch and Switch 2 owners should grab this great deal from Best Buy while they can.

Over at Walmart, you can get a physical copy of Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition without the collectibles for $19.45 (was $30).

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition – Deluxe Set

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition – Deluxe Set:

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition is an ode to the original Nintendo console and the real-life 1990 Nintendo World Championships. It compiles over 150 minigames spread across 13 NES titles, such as racing through the first level of Super Mario Bros., eating enemies the fastest in Kirby’s Adventure, and defeating Octoroks as possible in The Legend of Zelda. If you have a Nintendo Switch Online membership, you can compare your scores to players around the world.

If you aren’t a NSO member, you can still enjoy local multiplayer for up to eight players. After each round, you’ll receive a letter rating to let you know how well you’ve performed. You’ll earn in-game coins based on your performance, which can then be used to unlock additional challenges.

Here’s a look at all 13 games in the collection:

  • Balloon Fight
  • Donkey Kong
  • Excitebike
  • Ice Climber
  • Kid Icarus
  • Kirby’s Adventure
  • Metroid
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros. 2
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Super Mario Bros.

The collection is meant to be played with NES controllers, but there are some great alternatives to the $70 pair only available to Switch Online members. The 8BitDo SN30 Pro Wireless Controller is available for $40.49 (was $45). This controller is modeled after the SNES controller, but it also has thumbsticks and both triggers and bumpers, so it has the added benefit of working well with modern games, too. Alternatively, you can get the 8BitDo Pro 2 for only $42.49 (was $50). The Pro 2 is has longer handles and feels fairly similar to the DualSense controller. It also has customization options, including a pair of remappable back buttons.

8BitDo recently launched the Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad for $70. The price difference may sound like a lot, but we’d recommend reading our review that highlights all of the impressive upgrades and new features.

All three 8BitDo controllers mentioned above are compatible with Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.

For another rarely discounted, retro Nintendo product, check out the deal on the 1,215-piece Lego Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi building set at Walmart and Amazon. Like Nintendo World Championships, the Mario & Yoshi Lego display model has almost always sold for full price since launching last year. Plus, it’ll help you pass the time until Lego’s highly anticipated Game Boy building set releases October 1.

Katabasis Deluxe Limited Edition - Save Big On R.F. Kuang's New Fantasy Novel

Katabasis Deluxe Limited Edition – Save Big On R.F. Kuang’s New Fantasy Novel

by admin August 25, 2025

Nebula Award-winning author R.F. Kuang returns this week with a new fantasy novel. Pitched as Dante’s Inferno crossed with Susanna Clarke’s Piranesi, Katabasis is a 560-page novel that takes place at a magical university and the underworld. The highly anticipated standalone novel releases August 26, and publisher Harper Voyager is commemorating the launch with a gorgeous collectible hardcover. Katabasis Deluxe Limited Edition is available for $24.48 (was $35) at Amazon and Walmart.

After the first printing of Katabasis sells out, readers will have to settle for the standard edition, which means you’ll miss out on the eye-catching sprayed page edges, lavish case, and illustrated endpapers. Considering that Amazon now also has a store page for the standard edition–for only two bucks less–the Deluxe Limited Edition is possibly close to selling out.

Take a look at the Deluxe Limited Edition of Katabasis below. Fans of Kuang’s Poppy War Trilogy should also check out Amazon’s discounts on the new Deluxe Collector’s Editions of the first two novels in the series.

R.F. Kuang Collector’s Edition Books:

$24.48 (was $35) | Releases August 26

R.F. Kuang’s latest fantasy novel revolves around a pair of PhD students, Alice Law and Peter Murdoch, who study Magick at a fictional Cambridge University. When their academic advisor Professor Jacob Grimes dies in what sounds like a classroom exercise gone terribly wrong, Alice blames herself. She couldn’t stand the guy, but as the best magician alive, Jacob’s recommendation letter could jumpstart her career in Magick. And he hadn’t written recommendation letters before his untimely death.

Described as academic rivals, Alice and Peter join forces and risk their own lives to try to save their futures–and Jacob, who happens to be in literal Hell. And so the pair of brainy, aspirational magicians take a trip to the depths of Hell. But all of their training didn’t prepare them for what Hell is actually like.

The title comes from Greek myths that refer to a descent to Hell as a katabasis. The publisher calls Katabasis “2025’s most unexpected love story,” in case you were wondering whether this is an enemies-turned-lovers situation. And while it is, in a way, I’ve read it, and it really does subvert your expectations in this regard.

The 560-page Deluxe Limited Edition hardcover has decorative sprayed edges featuring the college and the underworld. The dust jacket artwork shows Alice and Peter descending a winding staircase surrounded by bookshelves. This 3D representation of their journey is also depicted on the embossed front cover when you remove the dust jacket. The Deluxe Limited Edition also has exclusive endpapers designed to resemble pages from Alice’s notebook with equations, tables, and diagrams.

Signed copies of the Deluxe Limited Edition were available at Barnes & Noble for $35, but it’s currently sold out.

Editions of Katabasis by R.F. Kuang

Katabasis Deluxe Limited Edition

The Deluxe Limited Edition is for the US market, but Harper Voyager also printed a different collectible hardcover in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Big fans of Kuang’s work can import the international limited edition from UK bookshops like Waterstones–though shipping costs and potential tariffs could be rough–or buy a copy from a US reseller on Amazon for around $50.

Large Print editions of Katabasis are available in paperback, and the UK version is roughly half the price compared to the US Large Print edition.

Katabasis is also available as a $15 Kindle ebook and Audible audiobook narrated by Morag Sims and Will Watt.

R.F. Kuang’s The Poppy War, Babel, and The Dragon Republic

  • The Poppy War Trilogy Box Set — $32.49 ($60)
  • The Poppy War: Book 1 (2018)
  • The Dragon Republic: Book 2 (2019)
  • The Burning God: Book 3 (2020)
  • Babel: Or the Necessity of Violence (2022)
  • Yellowface (2023)

Kuang is one of the most prolific and successful young writers working in fiction today. Despite only just turning 29 earlier this year, Katabasis is Kuang’s sixth novel. In 2018, Harper Voyager published Kuang’s debut novel, The Poppy War, when she was 22–but she was only 20 when she signed the contract. The first in a grimdark historical fantasy trilogy set in a fictionalized version of Kuang’s native China, The Poppy War was followed up by The Dragon Republic in 2019 and The Burning God in 2020. The award-winning series is available in multiple physical formats, including a budget-friendly paperback box set, hardcover, and trade paperback.

Last November, Harper published The Poppy War Deluxe Collector’s Edition with sprayed edges, illustrated endpapers, embossed visual effects, and a fully illustrated dust jacket. The Poppy War Collector’s Edition hardcover is discounted to $24.29 (was $45) at Amazon. The Dragon Republic Deluxe Collector’s Edition released in June and is on sale for $26 (was $45). Though not confirmed yet, we imagine The Burning God will get a matching Collector’s Edition of its next year.

After completing the trilogy, Kuang shifted gears to speculative fiction in Babel: Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators’ Revolution. Yes, that’s a very long title. Babel is a fascinating alternate history that, like Katabasis, revolves around academia. It won the 2022 Nebula Award for Best Novel.

Kuang changed genres once again with her riveting 2023 novel Yellowface. The satirical novel takes aim at racial diversity in publishing. If you like audiobooks, Helen Laser’s narration of Yellowface is wildly entertaining.

August has brought a number of other notable new fantasy and sci-fi novels, including Charlie Jane Anders’ Lessons in Magic and Disaster, Gareth Brown’s The Society of Unknowable Objects, Louis Sachar’s The Magician of Tiger Castle, and Yasuhiko Nishizawa’s The Man Who Died Seven Times.

Howl’s Moving Castle Deluxe Limited Edition Novel Is Only $23, Releases Next Month

by admin August 17, 2025

If you’re a big fan of Studio Ghibli’s animated movie Howl’s Moving Castle, you may be interested in adding a gorgeous new edition of the novel it’s based on to your bookshelf. Diana Wynne Jones’ beloved 1986 fantasy novel will be reissued in hardcover on September 9. Howl’s Moving Castle Deluxe Limited Edition is available to preorder at Amazon for $23.24 (was $25). Fans can also preorder a new paperback box set containing the entire World of Howl Trilogy for only $32.

The Deluxe Limited Edition and World of Howl Box Set would look great displayed next to the Steelbook Edition of Howl’s Moving Castle. The 2004 adaptation written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki strays considerably from the source material, but both the film and novel are magical in their own ways.

$23.24 (was $25) | Releases September 9

The Deluxe Limited Edition of Howl’s Moving Castle features beautiful new jacket art, full-color endpapers by artist Devin Elle Kurtz, black-and-white illustrations throughout the novel, and more premium flourishes. The publisher recreated a starry night sky by digitally printing the blue page edges. Bright white streaks resemble shooting stars.

If you remove the dust jacket, you’ll find gold foil-stamped text and shooting star graphics on the front/back covers and spine. The front cover features a well-known line from the novel: “Howl’s quite heartless, you know.”

As this is a limited-edition release, Howl’s Moving Castle fans may want to preorder their copy of the new 352-page hardcover soon. The $25 list price is lower than many standard hardcover fiction releases.

If you’ve never read the novel, Howl’s Moving Castle follows Sophie Hatter after she accidentally attracts the attention of the Witch of the Waste. Transformed into an old woman, Sophie’s only chance at breaking her curse lies within the Wizard Howl’s castle, a mobile base ruled by an infamous heartbreaker who is tormented by dark secrets from his past.

$32 | Releases October 7

Just a few weeks after the Deluxe Limited Edition’s release, Greenwillow Books is publishing Diana Wynne Jones’ complete trilogy as a paperback box set.

Howl’s Moving Castle is the first book in the World of Howl Trilogy. It was followed up by Castle in the Air in 1990 and House of Many Ways in 2008. All three books are standalone stories with different protagonists, but Howl appears in both of the follow-ups, so you should definitely read Howl’s Moving Castle first.

Castle in the Air follows unsuccessful carpet salesman Abdullah as he daydreams about a more adventurous life. House of Many Ways focuses on Charmain Baker as she explores a family home that can bend time and space.

All three novels are also available individually in paperback, and standard edition hardcovers with durable library bindings of the first two books are in print, too.

World of Howl Series:

  • Howl’s Moving Castle
  • Castle in the Air
  • House of Many Ways

Howl’s Moving Castle Deluxe Limited Edition

Studio Ghibli’s Howl’s Moving Castle on Blu-ray

As mentioned, the 2004 Studio Ghibli film deviated quite a bit from the book, as it featured a different aesthetic, certain characters stuck around for much longer, and even the dynamic between Sophie and Howl plays out in an unconventional way.

If you want to add the Studio Ghibli adaptation to your home movie collection, you can get the Howl’s Moving Castle Limited Edition Steelbook for only $16.29 or the standard edition for $15. Both editions come with Blu-ray and DVD versions of the film as well as a nice selection of special features, including storyboards, documentaries, interviews, and the original promotional materials. Howl’s Moving Castle has a star-studded cast of voice actors, including Christian Bale, Jean Simmons, and Billy Crystal, who voiced various characters.

Howl’s Moving Castle on Blu-ray

You can pair the Blu-ray with The Art of Howl’s Moving Castle, an excellent official companion book published in 2005. Priced at $19.44 (was $35), The Art of Howl’s Moving Castle offers a sprawling collection of concept sketches, fully rendered character and background drawings, paintings and cell images, and commentary from the Studio Ghibli crew that worked on the movie.

Howl’s Moving Castle is just one of numerous Studio Ghibli animated films inspired by a novel, short story, or manga. We’ve rounded up some of the other adaptations and their source materials below. We only included Ghibli films that pull from source material that’s readily available in English. At the bottom, you’ll also find a few examples of the reverse situation: written and illustrated stories adapted from Studio Ghibli films.

Kiki’s Delivery Service

Written by. Eiko Kadono and illustrated by Akiko Hayashi, Kiki’s Delivery Service is a popular Japanese children’s novel originally published in 1985. Hayao Miyazaki wrote and directed the 1989 animated adaptation. The adaptation has an official art book as well as a comic adaptation of its own.

  • Read the novel:
  • Watch the adaptation:
  • Books based on the movie:

Tales from Earthsea

The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition | Shuna’s Journey

The 2006 Ghibli film Tales from Earthsea is a notable one here because Goro Miyazaki–Hayao Miyazaki’s son–adapted parts of Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea series as well as his father’s graphic novel Shuna’s Journey. The film pulls from the first four novels in Le Guin’s classic fantasy series. A Wizard of Earthsea, the first novel in the fantasy series, was published in 1968. Humorously, the film gets its name from the fifth book in the series, but it doesn’t include elements from its namesake.

Shuna’s Journey, meanwhile, was published in Japanese in 1983 and received an English translation in 2022. It has beautiful watercolor artwork by Hayao Miyazaki. We’d also highly recommend The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition, a lavish 1,008-page hardcover collecting Le Guin’s full series.

  • Read Ursula K. Le Guin’s novel series:
  • Read Hayao Miyazaki’s graphic novel:
  • Watch the adaptation:

The Secret World of Arietty

The Borrowers, a 1952 fantasy novel written by Mary Norton was adapted by Studio Ghibli in 2010 as The Secret World of Arietty. Hayao Miyazaki wrote the screenplay, and Hiromasa Yonebayashi directed the film.

  • Read the novel:
  • Watch the adaptation:

When Marnie Was There

When Marnie Was There, a 1967 children’s novel by Joan G. Robinson, was adapted to a film of the same name in 2014. Yonebayashi directed and co-wrote the psychological drama.

  • Read the novel:
  • Watch the adaptation:

The Cat Returns

Baron the Cat, a 2002 manga by Aoi Hiiragi, was adapted the same year as The Cat Returns. Aoi Hiiragi’s manga was translated to English in 2005 with the title Baron: The Cat Returns. The Baron from the book and movie previously appeared in Studio Ghibli’s 1995 film Whisper of the Heart. This is because Aoi Hiiragi also wrote the original manga it’s based on. Unfortunately, the 1989 manga Mimi o Sumaseba has never received an English translation.

  • Read the manga:
  • Watch the adaptation:

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Manga Box Set (Hardcover)

Hayao Miyazaki has adapted exactly one of his own published works: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. First published in 1982, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is Miyazaki’s only manga series. He based the screenplay for the 1984 film adaptation on parts of the first and second volumes of what eventually ended as a seven-volume series in 1994. Since the manga ran for a decade after the film’s release, it’s no surprise that the 1,100-plus page series is markedly different than the movie. The Nausicaa manga is available in trade paperback or in a deluxe, two-volume hardcover box set with a display case, fully illustrated endpapers, and a watercolor poster. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind’s Blu-ray and DVD combo pack is one of many Studio Ghibli films available with a steelbook case.

  • Read the manga:
  • Watch the adaptation:
  • Read books about both:

My Neighbor Totoro

My Neighbor Totoro: The Novel and Picture Book

My Neighbor Totoro isn’t like the films and books listed above. Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, My Neighbor Totoro released in 1988. A four-volume ani-manga released in Japan almost simultaneously. Viz Media translated those volumes to English in 2004-05. Just last year, all four were reprinted as My Neighbor Totoro Film Comic: All-in-One Edition. The nearly 600-page hardcover book is available for the bargain price of $30. The film was also adapted into a picture book the same year it released. For Totoro’s 25th anniversary, author Tsugiko wrote a novelization of My Neighbor Totoro with illustrations by Miyazaki.

  • Watch the movie:
  • Read the books based on the movie:

My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service aren’t the only Studio Ghibli films to receive ani-manga (film comics in the US) adaptations. Fans can also get omnibus editions of comics adapted from Spirited Away and Ponyo. The 856-page Spirited Away Film Comic: All-in-One Edition is on sale for $25.60 (was $35). Ponyo’s All-in-One Edition released in July and is up for grabs for $25.87 (was $30). Ghibli fans can also preorder the Princess Mononoke Film Comic: All-in-One Edition ahead of its publication next January.

The First Bloodborne Graphic Novel Is Getting A Deluxe Hardcover Edition

by admin June 13, 2025

More than a decade after its release, Bloodborne remains one of From Software’s most-discussed and beloved games. Its gruesome, gothic world won over legions of fans–and while it hasn’t received a sequel–or a PC port–it does have a great spin-off graphic novel series. Six volumes have been published since its debut in 2018, and the first one will soon be available in premium hardcover format. Bloodborne Vol. 1 Deluxe Edition will be published by Titan Comics on September 2, and preorders are available for $25 at Amazon.

Heads up: Amazon is currently running a B1G1 50% off promotion, and it includes the paperback edition of Volume 1 in the Bloodborne: Vol. 1-3 Slipcase Set for $28 (was $50). You could pair it with Dark Souls: The Complete Collection, which is discounted to $24 (was $35), and save an additional $12. This promotion is likely to end after June 14.

$25 | Releases September 2

The Death of Sleep Deluxe Edition is packed with additional content, including behind-the-scenes content, new artwork, and the original script. It clocks in at 144 pages, whereas the original paperback of Volume 1 was just 112 pages. The extra content combined with the premium hardcover format may make it worth the upgrade for fans who already own the series.

Volume 1 collects the first four comics in the Bloodborne comic book series. Not unlike the game, it stars a nameless Hunter on a quest to find the Paleblood and escape Old Yharnam, the nightmarish ancient city plagued by all sorts of Gothic-inspired horrors.

Naturally, The Death of Sleep is the first volume to receive a Deluxe Edition, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see the subsequent five volumes join it.

While some of the plot points in the series resemble parts of the game, the series also has its own stories and introduces new characters who don’t appear in From Software’s game.

It is worth noting that the Deluxe Edition of Volume 1 is only a few bucks less than the aforementioned box set compiling Volumes 1-3 in paperback. A box set for Volumes 4-6 is slated to arrive October 14.

Bloodborne Graphic Novel Box Sets:

If you’re interested in Bloodborne comics, chances are you’d enjoy the Dark Souls adaptation, too. The Dark Souls: The Complete Collection is the best place to start, as this 384-page omnibus comes with the first four volumes in the series and a short story anthology. The only volume not included is The Willow King, which was published last September. There’s also a slipcase set with the first three volumes, but it doesn’t come with the prequel or anthology.

A Dark Souls manga series debuted last summer and will get its second volume in July.

Elden Ring: The Road to the Erdtree

From Software’s latest hit, Elden Ring, doesn’t have a graphic novel adaptation, but you can spend more time in the Lands Between by reading The Road to the Erdtree manga. The manga is a comedy, so it’s significantly different in tone compared to the game. Five volumes have been published by Yen Press since its 2023 debut, and two more are slated to release before the end of the year.

Sekiro Manga

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice manga

Yen Press also published a self-contained manga based on Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Dubbed Sekiro Side Story: Hanbei the Undying, the 144-page manga takes place before the events of the game.
