Meta Oversight Board Slams Parent Company Over Viral Ronaldo Deepfake

Meta’s Oversight Board has ordered the removal of a Facebook post showing an AI-manipulated video of Brazilian football legend Ronaldo Nazário promoting an online game.

The board said the post violated Meta’s Community Standards on fraud and spam, and criticized the company for allowing the misleading video to remain online.

“Taking the post down is consistent with Meta’s Community Standards on fraud and spam. Meta should also have rejected the content for advertisement, as its rules prohibit using the image of a famous person to bait people into engaging with an ad,” the Oversight Board said in a statement Thursday.

The Oversight Board, an independent body that reviews content moderation decisions at Facebook parent Meta, has the authority to uphold or reverse takedown decisions and can issue recommendations that the company must respond to. 

It was established in 2020 to provide accountability and transparency for Meta’s enforcement actions.

The case highlights a growing concern over AI-generated images that falsely depict people, portraying them as saying or doing things they never did. 

They are increasingly being deployed for scams, fraud, and misinformation.

In this instance, the video depicted a poorly synchronized voiceover of Ronaldo Nazário urging users to play a game called Plinko through its app, falsely promising that users could earn more than by doing common jobs in Brazil. 



The post garnered more than 600,000 views before being flagged.

But despite being reported, addressing the content was not prioritized, and it was not removed. 

The user who reported it then appealed the decision to Meta, where it was again not prioritized for human review. Finally, the user went to the Board.

Deepfakes on the rise

This is not the first time Meta has faced criticism over its handling of celebrity deepfakes.

 Last month, actress Jamie Lee Curtis confronted CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Instagram after her likeness was used in an AI-generated ad, prompting Meta to disable the ad but leave the original post online.

The Board found that only specialized teams at Meta could remove this type of content, suggesting widespread underenforcement. It urged Meta to apply its anti-fraud policies more consistently across the platform.

The decision comes amid broader legislative momentum to curb the abuse of deepfakes. 

In May, President Donald Trump signed the bipartisan Take It Down Act, mandating that platforms remove non-consensual, intimate, AI-generated images within 48 hours.

 The law responds to an uptick in deepfake pornography and image-based abuse affecting celebrities and minors.

Trump himself was targeted by a viral deepfake this week, showing him advocating for dinosaurs to guard the U.S.’ southern border.

Trump Deepfake Calls for Velociraptors on Border Patrol, Racks Up 1.2M Views

Perhaps it’s a sign of the times when nothing is too weird to be discounted.

A deepfake video of U.S. President Donald Trump calling for the return of Velociraptors and Pterodactyls to patrol the border with Mexico went viral on Tuesday, racking up more than 1.2 million views and 20,000 likes.

The clip, clearly labeled at the end as a deepfake and uploaded to X Monday, features a convincingly rendered Trump in the White House Oval Office, suggesting that the Department of Homeland Security could one day unleash the prehistoric creatures on the southern border.

“My administration and I have been taking careful note of the work of Colossal Labs, the biotech company that resurrected the dire wolf,” the Trump deepfake said. “But picture this, folks: Velociraptor mounted Border Patrol agents. They’ll rip your head clear off. Pterodactyls patrolling the skies, velociraptors on the ground.”

“To prevent the immigration apocalypse, we may have to counter with a dinopocalypse.”

In April, Texas-based genetic engineering company Colossal Biosciences claimed to have”de-extincted” the dire wolf. The announcement and reveal of the genetically engineered wolves sparked speculation of what other extinct species, including dinosaurs, could be brought back.

If it sounds absurd, that’s because it is. But for many viewers, it was just believable enough to look real. Many turned to Grok, the native AI assistant on X, which tentatively concluded the clip was “almost certainly AI-generated,” but stopped short of calling it definitively fake.

“The video you mentioned, showing someone resembling Donald Trump discussing dinosaurs for border enforcement, is almost certainly AI-generated,” Grok responded. “No credible sources, official records, or news outlets confirm such a statement from Trump, whose actual border policies focus on walls and enforcement, not fantastical scenarios.”

Thanks to advances in AI video clip generators like Google Veo 3, OpenAI’s Sora, and Kling AI, distinguishing between synthetic and real content is becoming increasingly difficult.

Despite the clip being AI-generated, some users noted that the idea of Trump suggesting the use of dinosaurs to patrol the border wasn’t entirely out of character.

“Obviously this is AI…but the fact that it seems like something he’d say is perturbing,” one X user said.

“It’s sad that I had to verify that this is satire,” another said.



As AI-generated content becomes more sophisticated, even the most outlandish clips can slip through the cracks.

Maverick Alexander, host of the storytelling comedy podcast DarbyCast, took credit for the viral video clip.

“Many people are trying to make Trump deepfakes now, but I haven’t seen any land the plane on his voice and word choice,” Maverick said in a later post. “As a result thereof, I should probably keep making these, no?”

Welcome to 2025, where reality is negotiable, and a U.S. raptor-enabled Border Patrol sounds plausible.

How AI-powered “repeaters” are quietly hacking banks and crypto platforms with deepfake identities

In a digital world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, identity fraud is evolving in scale and sophistication.

Experts from AU10TIX have flagged a new threat tactic known as “Repeaters” which is reshaping the way fraudsters infiltrate digital systems.

Unlike traditional attacks, these aren’t designed for instant damage – instead, Repeaters quietly test the defenses of banks, crypto platforms, and other services by using slightly varied synthetic identities.

Once weak points are identified, those same assets are redeployed across multiple platforms in large-scale, coordinated fraud campaigns.

At the heart of this strategy are deepfake-enhanced identities, slightly modified versions of a core digital asset.

These changes may include tweaks to facial features, background images, or document numbers.

When examined individually, each variation appears legitimate, often bypassing traditional Know Your Customer (KYC) processes and biometric checks.

AU10TIX’s CEO, Yair Tal, describes them as “the fingerprint of a new class of fraud: automated, AI-enhanced attacks that reuse synthetic identities and digital assets at scale.”

What makes Repeaters particularly dangerous is how they exploit gaps in current fraud detection systems.

Most traditional defenses rely on static validation, evaluating each identity as an isolated event. Techniques like biometric scans, liveness detection, and ID checks often miss the broader picture.

Because these synthetic identities are only submitted a few times per platform and appear unique, conventional tools struggle to detect the repetition.

To counter this threat, AU10TIX therefore introduces “consortium validation”. Unlike siloed systems, this method allows multiple organizations to share identity signals across a real-time network, just like the best endpoint protection platforms.

If an identity, or even a slightly modified version, appears at more than one member organization, the system flags it immediately.

It’s a collaborative defense strategy aimed at connecting the dots between otherwise isolated incidents.

“We’re proud to be at the forefront of detecting and blocking these attacks through advanced pattern recognition and real-time consortium validation,” Tal added

AU10TIX recommends organizations also audit for vulnerabilities to deepfakes and synthetic identities that can bypass traditional KYC defenses.

It also recommends the close monitoring of behaviors across devices, sessions and onboarding events because it can reveal coordinated activities before they scale.

The best chance at early detection of such fraudulent activity is a connected and behaviorally aware security infrastructure because no single solution can claim to be the best antivirus or the best malware protection against this new generation of fraud.

Trump signs bill criminalizing nonsensenual AI deepfake porn

US President Donald Trump has signed a bill criminalizing nonconsensual artificial intelligence-generated deepfake porn, which also requires websites to take down any illicit images within 48 hours.

Trump signed the bill into law on May 19, known as the TAKE IT DOWN Act, an acronym for Tools to Address Known Exploitation by Immobilizing Technological Deepfakes on Websites and Networks.

The bill, backed by first lady Melania Trump, makes it a federal crime to publish, or threaten to publish, nonconsensual intimate images, including deepfakes, of adults or minors with the intent to harm or harass them. Penalties range from fines to prison.

Websites, online services, or apps must remove illegal content within 48 hours and establish a takedown process.

Trump said in remarks given at the White House Rose Garden and posted to the social media platform Truth Social that the bill also covers “forgeries generated by an artificial intelligence,” commonly referred to as deepfakes.

Melania Trump had directly lobbied lawmakers to support the bill, and said in a statement that the law is a “national victory.”

“Artificial Intelligence and social media are the digital candy of the next generation — sweet, addictive, and engineered to have an impact on the cognitive development of our children,” she said.

“But unlike sugar, these new technologies can be weaponized, shape beliefs, and sadly, affect emotions and even be deadly,” she added.

Senator Ted Cruz and Amy Klobuchar introduced the bill in June 2024, and it passed both houses in April of this year. 

US the latest to ban explicit deepfakes

There has been a growing number of cases where deepfakes are used for harmful purposes. One of the more high-profile instances saw deepfake-generated illicit images of pop star Taylor Swift rapidly spread through X in January 2024. 

X temporarily banned searches using Taylor Swift’s name in response, while lawmakers pushed for legislation criminalizing the production of deepfake images.

Other countries, such as the UK, have already made sharing deepfake pornography illegal as part of the country’s Online Safety Act in 2023. 

A 2023 report from security startup Security Hero revealed that the majority of deepfakes posted online are pornographic, and 99% of individuals targeted by such content are women.

President Donald Trump on Monday signed into law the bipartisan Take It Down Act, a sweeping measure that criminalizes the non-consensual online publication of intimate images, both authentic or AI-generated, and compels major tech platforms to remove such content within 48 hours of notification.

The law goes into effect immediately.

The signing ceremony also marked a rare symbolic moment as First Lady Melania Trump joined the president to add her signature. The law is a capstone of her recent public advocacy campaign focused on online exploitation and children’s safety in the digital age.

“This legislation is a powerful step forward in our efforts to ensure that every American, especially our young people, can feel better protected from their image or identity being abused through non-consensual intimate imagery or NCII,” Melania Trump said.

“AI and social media are the digital candy of the next generation—sweet, addictive, and engineered to have an impact on the cognitive development of our children,” she added. “But unlike sugar, these new technologies can be weaponized, shape beliefs, and sadly, affect emotions and even be deadly.” 

The legislation comes amid a surge in reports of deepfake pornography and non-consensual image abuse. High-profile figures like Taylor Swift and Jamie Lee Curtis, as well as underage children, have seen AI-generated images of themselves shared online without consent, some of which have been explicit. 

The Take It Down Act is one of the first major federal responses to the threat posed by generative AI.

The law makes it a federal crime to publish or threaten to publish non-consensual intimate images of adults or minors, including deepfakes, with the intent to harm or harass. Violators face criminal penalties, including prison and fines.

For adult subjects, the bill prohibits the online publication of intimate visual depictions when it is intended to cause or does cause harm to the subject.

That includes where the depiction was published without the subject’s consent or, in the case of an authentic depiction, was created or obtained under circumstances where the adult had a reasonable expectation of privacy.

For minors, the bill covers when publication is intended to abuse or harass the minor or to arouse or gratify the sexual desire of a person. 

Public websites, online services, or apps that host user-generated content must establish a clear takedown process and eliminate duplicates of flagged content.

The bill received near-unanimous support in Congress, passing the House 409-2 and the Senate by unanimous consent.

Melania Trump had lobbied lawmakers directly to support the bill, hosting victims at a Capitol Hill roundtable and bringing Elliston Berry as her guest to the president’s address to Congress in March.
