[Official Broadcast] Frosty Games Fest | Summer Game Fest 2025 – YouTube

Watch On

In the southern hemisphere the Summer Game Fest is a winter event. The Frosty Game Fest exists as a counterpoint—highlighting more than 50 games, both new and upcoming, from Australia and New Zealand. Or as the show’s tagline puts it: “COOL SH*T FROM ANZ.” And you better pronounce it zed.

Enjoying a world premiere at this year’s Frosty Game Fest was Apothecary of City X, a sci-fi strategy-simulation where you are the last alchemist in a dystopian future. There’s a shop side of things where you have to identify ingredients and deliver people’s medicine or poison, as the case may be, which looks a bit like Strange Horticulture.

But there’s also an external element where you hit the streets in a junker mech, and fight other mechs in card combat. It’s a deckbuilder on the sly, with your deck of cards representing the run-down mech you climb into like a suit of armor when you need to leave your shop for the neon streets of City X.

It’s a quirky mash-up. One of the city’s zones is called the Breakfast Sector, as revealed in a scene where someone turns a crank on the side of his face seemingly to keep a headlamp running. If you’re low on goji berries you can cut a corner by substituting “old soda” in recipes, or swapping out ginseng for inspired cereal. Also, to get new builds for your mech you collect retro cartridges you interact with via some kind of cyberpunk viewmaster interface.

So yeah, it’s an unusual one. If you’re intrigued by the idea of running your own Chinese apothecary in a dystopian city, there’s a Steam page where you can wishlist it. Apothecary of City X is coming to early access in November of 2025.

All Will Rise Kickstarter Trailer | Wholesome Direct 2025 – YouTube

Watch On

“The river is a god, and they killed her” is a hell of a way to start off a trailer, but that’s how things get rolling in the new video for All Will Rise, which despite sounding like some sort of supernatural thriller is in fact a “narrative courtroom deck-builder” about ordinary people holding the wealthy and powerful to account for their actions.

A trailer revealed during today’s Wholesome Direct showcase gave us a look at what All Will Rise is all about. You are a lawyer in Muziris, “a vibrant city under pressure by powerful corporate and political interests,” and you’ve chosen a task that is not at all simple: Using unlockable cards earned by following leads and making choices, you must pursue a corrupt billionaire in court and hold him responsible for the murder of a river.

“Conversations are courtroom-style strategic card battles,” the Steam page says. “Charm and persuade, or intimidate and manipulate. Play cards to influence people’s emotional energies—Hearts, Minds and Guts. Engage their emotions, or exploit their vulnerabilities to make your points. Choose your strategy carefully, potential allies could easily turn into determined enemies.”

It won’t be a clean fight in the safe, sterile confines of the courtroom, and tough choices will have to be made, with potentially devastating long-term consequences. “Mix with ecoterrorists and godmen, capitalist overlords and construction workers, conspiracy theorists and hacker seeresses. Boost your reputation with the city’s quarreling factions—keep the balance, or let tensions explode.”

Your team will have to be carefully managed as well: Be aware of their strengths and weaknesses as you assign them to missions, respect their opinions, and don’t push them too hard, lest they burn out.

I’m not generally big on deckbuilders, but the narrative elements of All Will Rise make it immediately attractive: This is clearly a game with something to say, which is a little bit unusual in the realm of videogames. I dig the visual style too, and any game that lets me play this card is worth at least a second look:

All Will Rise is currently up for wishlisting on Steam, and it’s also headed to Kickstarter. The crowdfunding campaign hasn’t begun yet, but you can sign up to be notified when it’s live.

Gwent co-creator and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners showrunner’s new deckbuilder has an excellent tortoise

I haven’t yet decided whether the loot tortoise in roguelike deckbuilder Dice Legends looks satisfied or exhausted. Both make sense to me. “He’s grown used to this, but still isn’t thrilled about it,” offered my sister. I would not be thrilled either. Imagine being aware of Pratchett’s world turtle and knowing you’re a glorified ATM by comparison.

“A roguelike deckbuilder, Nic?”, you exclaim with mock interest. “Well, kick me down a well and break out the Vimto we’ve had mouldering in the cellar since the nineties, the last decade in which anyone consumed or thought about Vimto. Haven’t had one of those since the time I went to collect the post forty five seconds ago. Also, the post was two flyers, each advertising a roguelike deckbuilder”. I will not argue with your sage industry analysis, friend, although this one does have a couple of notables that may make the Steam demo an intriguing prospect.

Watch on YouTube

It’s got lovely pixel art, for one, although thoughtful art direction isn’t too surprising. Dice Legends is the latest project from CD Project alum Rafał Jaki, co-creator of The Witcher 3’s Gwent minigame and showrunner on Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

It’s also got a tabletop twist on traditional card flinging. Each of the three playable heroes uses a different type of dice (D6, D8, or the haughty D12 – also known in some circles as ‘the shape bastard’), and you’ll use these to roll a dice pool to activate cards. Some cards need a number within a certain range but will still have the same effect. Others scale up with your dice results. Otherwise, it’s Slay The Spire at its very core. Attack, build up shield to defend against telegraphed damage, apply debuffs, and conquer nodes on an overworld map.

Additionally, the soundtrack is pure Bardcore. It is certified jaunty up in here. Is Dice Legends a ‘fifth page on the Nintendo Eshop sale’-ass name for a game? Yes. But I think it’s good time nonetheless. This one’s out in the third quarter of the year, to use the language of my most hated enemies, the year quarterers.
