AI data centers are swallowing the world’s memory and storage supply, setting the stage for a pricing apocalypse that could last a decade

Nearly every analyst firm and memory maker is now warning of looming shortages of NAND and DRAM that will result in skyrocketing pricing for SSDs and memory over the coming months and years, with some even predicting a shortage that will last a decade. The looming shortages are becoming increasingly impossible to ignore, and the warnings from the industry are growing increasingly dire, as the voracious appetite of AI data centers begins to consume the lion’s share of the world’s memory and flash production capacity.

For the better part of two years, storage upgrades have been a rare bright spot for PC builders. SSD prices cratered to all-time lows in 2023, with high-performance NVMe drives selling for little more than the cost of a modest mechanical hard disk. DRAM followed a similar trajectory, dropping to price points not seen in nearly a decade. In 2024, the pendulum swung firmly in the other direction, with prices for both NAND flash and DRAM starting to climb.

The shift has its roots in the cyclical nature of memory manufacturing, but is amplified this time by the extraordinary demands of AI and hyperscalers. The result is a broad supply squeeze that touches every corner of the industry. From consumer SSDs and DDR4 kits to enterprise storage arrays and bulk HDD shipments, there’s a singular throughline: costs are moving upward in a convergence that the market has not seen in years.

From glut to scarcity

The downturn of 2022 and early 2023 left memory makers in dire straits. Both NAND and DRAM were selling below cost, and inventories piled up. Manufacturers responded with drastic output cuts to stem the bleeding. By the second half of 2023, those reductions had worked their way through to sales channels. NAND spot prices for 512Gb TLC parts, which had fallen to record lows, rose by more than 100% in the span of six months, and contract pricing followed.

That rebound quickly showed up on retail shelves. Western Digital’s 2TB Black SN850X sold for upwards of $150 in early 2024, while Samsung’s 990 Pro 2TB went from a holiday low of around $120 to more than $175 within the same timeframe.

The DRAM market’s trend lagged behind NAND by a quarter, but the pattern was the same. DDR4 modules, which appeared to be clearance items in 2023, experienced a supply crunch as production lines began to wind down. Forecasts for Q3 2025’s PC-grade DDR4 products were set to jump by 38-43% quarter-over-quarter, with server DDR4 close behind at 28-33%. Even the graphics memory market began to strain. Vendors shifted to GDDR7 for next-generation GPUs, and shortfalls in GDDR6 sales inflated prices by around 30%. DDR5, still the mainstream ramp, rose more modestly but showed a clear upward slope.

Hard drives faced their own constraints. Western Digital notified partners in April 2024 that it would increase HDD prices by 5-10% in response to limited supply. Meanwhile, TrendForce recently identified a shortage in nearline HDDs, the high-capacity models used in data centers. That shortage redirected some workloads toward flash, tightening NAND supply further.

Every memory cycle has a trigger, or a series of triggers. In past years, it was the arrival of smartphones, then solid-state notebooks, then cloud storage. This time, the main driver of demand is AI. Training and deploying large language models require vast amounts of memory and storage, and each GPU node in a training cluster can consume hundreds of gigabytes of DRAM and multiple terabytes of flash storage. Within large-scale data centers, the numbers are staggering.

OpenAI’s “Stargate” project has recently signed an agreement with Samsung and SK hynix for up to 900,000 wafers of DRAM per month. That figure alone would account for close to 40% of global DRAM output. Whether the full allocation is realized or not, the fact that such a deal even exists shows how aggressively AI firms are locking in supply at an enormous scale.

Cloud service providers are behaving similarly. High-density NAND products are effectively sold out months in advance. Samsung’s next-generation V9 NAND is already nearly booked before it’s even launched. Micron has presold almost all of its High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) output through 2026. Contracts that once covered a quarter now span years, with hyperscalers buying directly at the source.


Deal alert

The knock-on effects are visible at the consumer level. Raspberry Pi, which had stockpiled memory during the downturn, was forced to raise prices in October 2025 due to memory costs. The 4GB versions of its Compute Module 4 and 5 increased by $5, while the 8GB models rose by $10. Eben Upton, the company’s CEO, noted that “memory costs roughly 120% more than it did a year ago,” in an official statement on the Raspberry Pi website. Seemingly, nothing and no one can escape the surge in pricing.

Shifting investment priorities

A shortage is not simply a matter of demand rising too quickly. Supply is also being redirected. Over the past decade, NAND and DRAM makers learned that unchecked production expansion usually leads to collapse. After each boom, the subsequent oversupply destroyed margins, so the response this cycle has been more restrained.

Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron have all diverted capital expenditure toward HBM and advanced nodes. HBM, in particular, commands exceptional margins, making it an obvious priority. Micron’s entire 2026 HBM output is already committed, and every wafer devoted to HBM is one not available for DRAM. The same is true for NAND, where engineering effort and production are concentrated on 3D QLC NAND for enterprise customers.

According to the CEO of Phison Electronics, Taiwan’s largest NAND controller company, it’s this redirection of capital expenditure that will cause tight supply for, he claims, the next decade.

“NAND will face severe shortages in the next year. I think supply will be tight for the next ten years,” he said in a recent interview. When asked why, he said, “Two reasons. First… every time flash makers invested more, prices collapsed, and they never recouped their investments… Then in 2023, Micron and SK hynix redirected huge capex into HBM because the margins were so attractive, leaving even less investment for flash.”

It’s these actions that are squeezing more mainstream products even tighter. DDR4 is being wound down faster than demand is tapering. Meanwhile, TLC NAND, once abundant, is also being rationed as manufacturers allocate their resources where the money is, leaving older but still essential segments undersupplied.

The same story is playing out in storage. For the first time, NAND flash and HDDs are both constrained at once. Historically, when one was expensive, the other provided a release valve, but training large models involves ingesting petabytes of data, and all of it has to live somewhere. That “warm” data usually sits on nearline HDDs in data centers, but demand is now so high that lead times for top-capacity drives have stretched beyond a year.

With nearline HDDs scarce, some hyperscalers are accelerating the deployment of QLC flash arrays. That solves one bottleneck, but creates another, pushing demand pressure back onto NAND supply chains. For the first time, SSDs are being adopted at scale for roles where cost-per-gigabyte once excluded them. The result is a squeeze from both sides, with HDD prices rising because of supply limits and SSD prices firming as cloud buyers step in to fill the gap.

Why not build even more fabs?

Fabs are being built, but they’re expensive and take a long time to get up and running, especially in the U.S. A new greenfield memory fab comes with a price tag in the tens of billions, and requires several years before volume production. Even expansions of existing lines take months of tool installation and calibration, with equipment suppliers such as ASML and Applied Materials struggling with major backlogs.

Manufacturers also remain wary of repeating past mistakes. If demand cools or procurement pauses after stockpiling, an overbuilt market could send prices tumbling. The scars of 2019 and 2022 are still fresh in their minds. This makes companies reluctant to bet on long-term cycles, even as AI demand looks insatiable today — after all, many believe that we’re witnessing an AI bubble.

Geopolitics adds yet more complexity to the conundrum. Export controls on advanced lithography equipment and restrictions on rare earth elements complicate any potential HDD fab expansion plans. These storage drives rely on Neodymium magnets, one of the most sought-after types of rare earth materials. HDDs are one of the single-largest users of rare earth magnets in the world, and China currently dominates the production of these rare earth materials. The country has recently restricted the supply of magnets as a retaliatory action against the U.S. in the ongoing trade war between the two nations.

Even if the capital were available, the supply chain for the required tools and materials is itself constrained. Talent shortages in semiconductor engineering slow the process even further. The net result is deliberate discipline, with manufacturers choosing to sell existing supply at higher margins rather than risk another collapse.

Unfortunately, manufacturers’ approaches to the matter are unlikely to change any time soon. For consumers, this puts an end to ultra-cheap PC upgrades, while enterprise customers will need larger infrastructure budgets. Storage arrays, servers, and GPU clusters all require more memory at a higher cost, and many hyperscalers make their own SSDs using custom controllers from several vendors. Larger companies, like Pure Storage, procure NAND in massive quantities for all flash arrays that power AI data centers. Some hyperscalers have already adjusted by reserving supply years in advance. Smaller operators without that leverage face longer lead times and steeper bills.

Flexibility is reduced in both cases. Consumers can delay an upgrade or accept smaller capacities, but the broader effect is to slow the adoption of high-capacity drives and larger memory footprints. Enterprises have little choice but to absorb costs, given the critical role of memory in AI and cloud workloads.

The market should eventually rebalance, but it’s impossible to predict when. New fabs are under construction, supported by government incentives, and if demand growth moderates or procurement pauses, the cycle could shift back toward oversupply.

Until then, prices for NAND flash, DRAM, and HDDs will likely remain elevated into 2026. Enterprise buyers will continue to command priority, leaving consumers to compete for what remains. And the seasonal price dips we took for granted in the years gone by probably won’t be returning any time soon.

Kevin Durant Recovers Bitcoin Bought at $650, Now Up Over 17,700%, After Nearly a Decade

NBA forward Kevin Durant has access to his bitcoin again, after being locked out of his Coinbase account for nearly a decade. In that time, the price of BTC rose by more than 17,700%.

“We got this fixed. Account recovery complete,” Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong posted on X, responding to a viral tweet about Durant’s access issues.

The recovery comes days after Durant and his business partner, Rich Kleiman, discussed the lockout at CNBC’s Game Plan conference. “It’s just a process we haven’t been able to figure out,” Kleiman said. Still, he noted, “bitcoin keeps going up… so, I mean, it’s only benefited us.”

Durant bought bitcoin in 2016 after hearing about it from then-teammates on the Golden State Warriors. At the time, bitcoin traded between $360 and $1,000 and Durant is estimated to have bought at around $650 per coin.

It’s now hovering near $116,000, according to CoinMarketCap data. Neither Durant nor Kleiman disclosed the size of his holdings.

Durant and Kleiman are investors in Coinbase and have promoted the company through their media outlet, Boardroom.

The episode comes amid growing frustration among some Coinbase users, who alleged they’ve faced similar issues retrieving account access or getting help from customer support. Armstrong acknowledged the criticism on social media, saying the company is “putting a big focus” on improving customer support.

Now that I’m done mourning BioWare, these are the RPG developers I’m expecting to carry the torch for the next decade

BioWare fans can never agree on which era of the studio was its peak—classic Baldur’s Gate 2, the original Mass Effect, or (correctly) Dragon Age: Origins—but there’s no debating that it was the frontrunner in a golden era for RPGs that influenced at least a decade of other games.

If that sounds like the beginning of a eulogy…yeah. It isn’t technically dead, and there’s a universe where BioWare makes some incredible comeback with Mass Effect 4, but I don’t think it’s this one. After Andromeda, Anthem, and Veilguard, it seems that no matter the talent still left in the studio, EA just isn’t going to give BioWare the time or trust to make the kind of RPGs it originally spearheaded anymore. I’m finally ready to let go.

If you too are mourning the studio’s effective downfall, rest assured that the BioWare-style RPG lives on elsewhere. My colleague Fraser Brown insisted back in 2023 that the BioWare-style RPG was dead and just didn’t know it yet. At the time I almost even agreed, but two years later it feels like we’ve finally arrived breathless at a tough summit to look down into a valley of plenty in the big-budget, story-forward party RPG scene.

Larian Studios

  • Working on: two unannounced things

I know better than to assume anything goes without saying, so I’m saying it: Larian is the number one RPG developer to watch right now for mourning BioWare fans. Its incredible triumph with Baldur’s Gate 3 (our 2023 Game of the Year and current number one in the Top 100 PC games) is a masterclass character-forward RPG sandbox jam-packed with deep strategy and roleplay opportunities that BioWare itself should have been making these 15 years since Dragon Age: Origins.

Despite some rough early years, Larian’s recent backlist is well worth dumping a couple hundred hours into. Divinity: Original Sin and D:OS2 are both excellent, though I wouldn’t say it was doing the full course BioWare RPG until Baldur’s Gate 3. Larian is worth staying excited for in the wake of BG3 because it’s got two new projects on the go now.

Neither are Baldur’s Gate 4, and instead it’s going to “develop our own IPs,” studio head Swen Vincke said. That may mean Divinity: Original Sin 3, which I would not complain about, but likely also means something completely new and original. I only hope they stick to their sword and sorcery chops and don’t fly off into sci-fi territory. Larian scaled up massively to pull off BG3, and not being beholden to a publisher or IP-holding partner means it can take full creative control in bringing that expertise to bear.

  • Working on: The Outer Worlds 2

Obsidian is living the life I wish BioWare could have had: trucking along as the subsidiary of a major publisher, being trusted to make the singleplayer RPGs that made it popular in the first place, valiantly juggling two original series—one fantasy and one sci-fi—and being the belle of the yearly company showcase. Seriously, this year’s summer Xbox event was very Obsidian-focused.

With Avowed getting compared so often to Skyrim and Obsidian itself loving a trailer gag reminding us that they made Fallout: New Vegas, it’s easy to have missed that their latest RPGs are actually more BioWare than Bethesda. Avowed was a great, party-focused RPG with genuinely impactful narrative choices and roleplaying moments around the campfire that will warm any Origins fan’s heart, and The Outer Worlds 2 is looking promising with its imminent launch too.

Of note is that Avowed’s game director Carrie Patel left Obsidian after over a decade. A bummer, but the fact that Patel came up from a writer on Pillars of Eternity to a narrative lead and then game director suggests that Obsidian’s been able to affirm the importance of storytelling in its RPGs. Here’s hoping it continues to do so wherever it heads after Outer Worlds 2.

Owlcat Games

  • Working on: The Expanse: Osiris Reborn

Standing at the precipice where BioWare itself once stood is Owlcat Games. The developer of top-down, party-based RPGs is coming off two Pathfinder games and a Warhammer 40k game and making a big jump into a cinematic sci-fi RPG, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. We’ve consistently praised Owlcat for nailing a setting and The Expanse, with its very popular political space opera book series and also popular TV adaptation, is a hell of a setting to be starting from.

“Your companions are more than just mission assets—they are people with their own scars and loyalties,” Owlcat says. “Over time, your relationships will flourish or deteriorate depending on the choices you make and how you choose to lead.” Between that, your customizable character, and the third-person sci-fi shooter action, Osiris Reborn may not outrun the Mass Effect comparisons. Maybe it shouldn’t try to.

Harebrained

When it was owned by Paradox, the studio formerly known as Harebrained Schemes gave us a couple of RPGs that were basically “what if classic BioWare had gone turn-based and also cyberpunk” in Shadowrun: Dragonfall and Shadowrun: Hong Kong. Both had strong parties of companions to butt heads and then bond with, and Dragonfall even borrowed the plot structure of Baldur’s Gate 2.

Unfortunately Paradox pushed the studio out of its comfort zone and the result was the less-impressive Lamplighters League, after which Paradox cut it free. Now independent and just called Harebrained, it’s working on an isometric body-horror RPG set on a space station. It’s called Graft, because it’s about stitching together a new body for yourself by scavenging from others as they fall, which I’m sure is totally not a metaphor for anything. “Form fragile alliances and build them into deeper relationships” says the Steam description, which sounds very BioWare to me.

  • CD Projekt Red: I’m jazzed for The Witcher 4, but I’ve always considered CDPR’s RPGs a different beast from BioWare’s.
  • Warhorse Studios: Ditto the above, though we did quite like Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.
  • Spiders: Its Greedfall series is actually BioWare-style, but the first was middling and the second is still in early access.
  • Tactical Adventures: Another studio doing D&D RPGs, but we praised Solasta’s combat while finding its storytelling a bit amateurish, so I’m not holding my breath on Solasta 2 as a BioWare-like.
  • InXile: We praised the writing in Wasteland 3 but its upcoming Clockwork Revolution looks like it will play more like Dishonored than anything.

In 2019, PC Gamer published the in-depth feature PC gaming in China: Everything you need to know about the world’s biggest PC games industry. At the time, our goal in covering what our shared hobby looks like in a country that Western players still have little insight into.

“China’s PC gaming industry is the largest in the world by a wide margin. The entire US games industry, including PC, mobile, and console games, generated only $30.4 billion in revenue in 2018—China’s PC gaming scene alone is equal to about half of that,” reporter Steven Messner wrote at the time. “In spite of those numbers, you might be hard-pressed to name a Chinese-made PC game.”

One year later, Chinese developer Game Science announced Black Myth: Wukong, and everything changed.

“The past 10 years was a crazy, historic decade for the Chinese gaming industry,” the founder of Chinese studio S-Game told me in Beijing last month. That may even be an understatement from Qiwei “Soulframe” Liang, who’s directing Phantom Blade Zero, which I think has the potential to be the next action game to leave a Black Myth-sized impression on players. I’ve already talked and written about Phantom Blade Zero a lot, but it’s not the only game picking up the torch from Black Myth and running with it.

In 2019, Chinese PC gaming was its own ecosystem that we wanted to help PC gamers outside China wrap their heads around, but most of biggest hits—League of Legends, PUBG—were imports, rather than games developed in China. And the relatively few hit games being developed in China were unlikely to be translated for other parts of the world.

In 2024, Black Myth: Wukong proved that big budget PC games developed in China could kill it on the world stage.

By 2030, we’re going to be inundated by games of that same caliber.

What we’re seeing now is a wave of games inspired and emboldened by Black Myth, as developers there take profits they made in mobile and start putting it towards what we more often think of as AAA games—like when Netflix started producing TV and films and gave Martin Scorsese $150 million dollars to make a 3-hour gangster drama. Chinese devs are hungry for that same prestige, and big publishers like Tencent and NetEase have the deep pockets needed to fund their blockbusters.

“All the focus is on making triple-A games. You can see a lot are coming,” Liang said. “It’s different. For Americans, it’s not a new concept, because you guys are making huge games. GTA or something like that is quite familiar. Black Myth: Wukong has created this possibility for Chinese games, but I would say for most, the quality is still your basement, your foundation. Making the games better is very important.

“I think there’s a pride for the gamers who played Black Myth, because they feel: We can make such a game. So we are very careful as Chinese developers to fulfill the requirements, the hype of the Chinese gamers. We have to make the games even better.”

This is going to be a defining story of the next decade in PC gaming. So when I was invited by S-Game to fly to Beijing for an event focused on Phantom Blade Zero, I also saw it as a chance to really get a sense for where the Chinese industry is right now, and maybe peek over the horizon at where it’s going.

Put down your trowel, stop smelling the roses, and listen to me for a second. Strange Horticulture, a narrative puzzler about running a plant shop that also happens to be one of the best detective games around, is free to keep on Epic this week.

Originally released in 2022, Strange Horticulture puts players in the role of a plant shop owner newly arrived at the alt-history Lake District town Undermere. Each in-game day, numerous customers will enter your store and ask you for a particular plant, though they can usually only provide a partial description of it. Using a magnifying glass and the world’s weirdest horticultural textbook, you must identify the plants in your shop and match them to the right customers.

Through this simple yet ingenious mechanic, a dark and eerie tale unfolds. Your clientele grow weirder, the plants you discover more esoteric, and the secrets of Undermere slowly begin to reveal themselves. Moreover, by learning about the qualities of each plant, which range from remedial herbs to deadly poisonous mushrooms, you can influence the trajectory of the story for good or ill.

The story behind Strange Horticulture is equally fascinating. Its developers, John and Rob Donkin, spent a decade designing Flash games for sites like Newgrounds before designing their detective masterpiece, inspired by a botanical text called Breverton’s Complete Herbal: A Book of Remarkable Plants and Their Uses.

“We just found this in a library one day and were like, gosh, how good is this?” John Donkin told PC Gamer’s Jody Macgregor. “It’s got all these cool plants and they’ve all got these amazing weird properties and uses. Some for I guess witchy things, others more as medicinal things. It’s just so inspiring. We just thought, well, let’s do that, but make them a bit more magical.”

Strange Horticulture is free until August 28. Now is a great time to play it too. A sequel, Strange Antiquities, is coming in September. It likewise takes place in Undermere, but switches your plant shop for an antique store, while also promising substantially more involved investigation techniques.

BioShock 4 Hit With Mass Layoffs After A Decade Of Spinning Its Wheels

The other shoe has dropped at Cloud Chamber. Following an internal delay and management shakeup, the studio making BioShock 4 has now laid off 80 people, Bloomberg reports. Originally, the sequel had supposedly been targeting a late 2026 release, but it will likely take longer now as significant aspects of the game, including the story, are reworked.

Layoffs announced on Tuesday amounted to about a third of the staff at the roughly 250-person studio. According to Bloomberg, the next BioShock has gone through multiple studios and leadership teams over the last decade, with problems arising at Cloud Chamber in part due to the need to create a new studio while also meeting sky-high expectations for the franchise. One of the stumbling blocks was reportedly its rapid growth and the game’s shift to the newest version of Unreal Engine.

“While we’re excited about the foundational gameplay elements of the project, we’ve made the decision with studio leadership to rework certain aspects that are core to a BioShock game, and in doing so are reducing the size of the development team to focus on this work and give the game more time in development,” 2K Games president David Ismailer wrote in a memo to staff this week that was shared with Kotaku.

Bloomberg reported earlier this month that BioShock 4’s latest stumble occurred following a negative internal review with executives, with particular concern about the game’s narrative. Publicly, 2K Games has said that the new BioShock is good but not good enough. “Some of our competitors have realized maybe a little late in the day that consumers are not okay with okay,” Strauss Zelnick, CEO of 2K parent company Take-Two, told IGN in a recent interview. Industry veteran Rod Fergusson is now leading the project, the second time he’s been tasked with clawing a BioShock game out of development hell.
