Discord customer service system breached by “unauthorised party”, gaining access to “a small number of government-ID images”

A third-party customer service system used by Discord’s support teams has been hacked, compromising some user personal data, including government IDs.

Discord has written to some users confirming that on 20th September, personal data was obtained by “an unauthorised party” which gained limited access, including “a small number of government‑ID images such as driver’s license and passports from users who had appealed an age determination”.

Discord – which is used by millions of gamers across the world – says information shared by users with its Customer Support or Trust and Safety teams was “exposed”, including real names, Discord name, email, contact address, limited payment information – including payment type, last four digits of credit cards, and purchase history – IP addresses, and messages and attachments sent to customer support. Limited corporate data, including training materials and internal presentations, was also exposed.

Full credit card numbers or CCV codes, Discord activity or messages, and passwords or authentication data were reportedly not compromised, but Discord has not revealed how many of its millions of users may have been impacted.

In a blog post, Discord insisted that just “a limited number of users who had communicated with customer support” were impacted, and the authorised party did not gain access to Discord directly. It also claimed to have taken “all appropriate steps” by notifying data protection authorities, law enforcement, and “reviewed our threat detection systems and security controls for third-party support providers”.

“Looking ahead, we recommend impacted users stay alert when receiving messages or other communication that may seem suspicious. We have service agents on hand to answer questions and provide additional support,” Discord said. “We take our responsibility to protect your personal data seriously and understand the inconvenience and concern this may cause.”

Discord customer service data breach leaks user info and scanned photo IDs

One of Discord’s third-party customer service providers was compromised by an “unauthorized party,” the company says. The unauthorized party gained access to “information from a limited number of users who had contacted Discord through our Customer Support and/or Trust & Safety teams” and aimed to “extort a financial ransom from Discord.” The unauthorized party “did not gain access to Discord directly.”

Data potentially accessed by the hack includes things like names, usernames, emails, and the last four digits of credit card numbers. The unauthorized party also accessed a “small number” of images of government IDs from “users who had appealed an age determination.” Full credit card numbers and passwords were not impacted by the breach, Discord says.

The company is notifying impacted users now over email. If your ID might have been accessed, Discord will specify that. Discord also says it revoked the support provider’s access to Discord’s ticketing system, has notified data protection authorities, is working with law enforcement, and has reviewed “our threat detection systems and security controls for third-party support providers.”

In the wake of a massive data breach, Coinbase is taking swift action to restore trust with a comprehensive overhaul of its customer support operations.

Four-pillar strategy targets core support issues

Griffith shared the company’s approach to fixing customer support through four targeted initiatives.

The first approach focuses on preventing issues by addressing product problems early and removing roadblocks before they require customer contact. This approach aims to reduce the volume of support requests by addressing root causes.

The second pillar involves reducing customer effort through improved automation, including better APIs, enhanced knowledge base resources, and AI-powered support tools.

These upgrades aim to help users resolve issues independently without needing human assistance.

The third initiative addresses a major customer complaint by making it easier to reach human support representatives.

Coinbase is minimizing chatbot barriers that previously frustrated users trying to escalate issues beyond automated responses.

The final component focuses on improving live support quality when human interaction becomes necessary. The company has rolled out new tools to help support staff provide faster resolutions and higher-quality assistance in real-time conversations.

Griffith reported early positive results, with customer satisfaction scores hitting an all-time high in August, up 20% over the previous two months.

The company also reduced customer contact transfers to 10%. This means fewer users need to explain their issues multiple times to different representatives.

Coinbase data breach highlights support importance

The customer service improvements come as Coinbase deals with fallout from a major data breach affecting 69,461 customers.

Court documents revealed that Ashita Mishra, a TaskUs employee, planned a conspiracy involving photographing up to 200 customer records daily and selling the data to hackers for $200 per photograph.

The breach potentially cost Coinbase between $180 million and $400 million in remediation expenses and forced the company to terminate its relationship with TaskUs.

Mishra and his accomplices accumulated data from over 10,000 customers before their arrest. They also recruited other employees, including team leaders and operations managers.

In response, Coinbase terminated all involved TaskUs employees and established a new U.S.-based customer support hub.

CEO Brian Armstrong emphasized the dual approach to support improvements and stated the company is “improving products so fewer people need support, and providing a faster, higher quality experience when you do.”

A New York court filing has revealed new details about a major data breach at Coinbase, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, which was done by an insider sitting in a customer support office in India. The filing claims that a former TaskUs employee in Indore, India, compromised data from more than 10,000 Coinbase customers by storing and selling their personal details. 

The worker, identified as Ashita Mishra, is accused of storing sensitive customer details on her phone and selling them to hackers, raising serious questions over insider-linked breaches at the crypto exchange.

According to the filing, from September 2024, she started quietly stealing customer details: things like social security numbers, bank info, and ID photos. Later, she sold those photos to hackers for $200 each, which the hackers then used to act like Coinbase staff and cheat people.

Over 69,000 Coinbase customers had their personal data exposed as a result. Coinbase has said that its main systems and wallets are still safe, but with this kind of personal data out, people are now vulnerable to fraud and scams. The exchange has asked customers to stay careful and promised stronger security.

Outsourcing questioned

This case has also raised big questions about outsourcing. Companies like Coinbase hire outsourcing firms like TaskUs to handle customer queries because it’s cheaper and faster. But when external staff get access to such sensitive data, it clearly comes with risks.

TaskUs has not yet issued a detailed statement. Experts are saying this mess will probably make everyone push for stricter checks, like better audits, tougher background checks, and tighter control over who can see data at outsourcing centers in India and elsewhere.

Coinbase, which has always tried to look like the safest and most trusted crypto exchange, especially in the U.S., is now under pressure to prove it, and the breach could invite closer examination of how it oversees vendors handling customer data.

Man’s emotional support alligator denied entry to Walmart after customer complaint

A Pennsylvania man has been denied entry to a Walmart store after bringing his five-foot emotional support alligator inside a shopping cart.

Wesley Silva, 60, said he had been shopping with his alligator, named Jinseioshi, at the same Walmart for “years” without issue. The five-foot-long reptile, weighing around 32 pounds, wore a harness and was pushed in a cart during visits.

According to WPXI, photos of the man with his gator went viral online, and the person who took them reported him to store management.

“I looked and I saw this alligator dressed up, standing in there, and his mouth was sticking out of the buggy. I didn’t believe it,” an anonymous woman who took the photos told the outlet. She also said that she likely wouldn’t return to that specific Walmart due to safety concerns. “I don’t want to shop with alligators.”

During a September trip to Walmart, staff stopped Silva after another customer complained. He told People that store associates refused entry for the first time since he began bringing Jinseioshi inside.

Emotional support vs. service animals

Experts told People that while service animals are legally protected, emotional support animals are not covered under the same laws. They also raised safety concerns, noting that reptiles such as alligators can react unpredictably in crowded or stressful environments like a retail store.

The Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh weighed in with a statement to WPXI: “There is no predictability to how that animal is going to act when it’s around strange people, stressful environments, which Walmart is, so there are no precautions there, and that could be quite dangerous.”

Jinseioshi isn’t the first emotional support alligator to be denied entry to an establishment, either. Back in 2023, a TikTok viral gator named Wally wasn’t allowed inside at a Phillies baseball game.

As we’ve reported more than a new times in the past, the AI hardware market is changing, with some of Nvidia’s biggest customers looking for ways to cut costs and gain more control over their systems.

Rather than relying solely on Nvidia’s costly GPUs, companies are beginning to design their own ASICs tailored to their workloads.

Broadcom is one of the bigger players in this space, offering the expertise needed to turn those custom designs into production-ready chips and systems.

Industry reports and timing, suggest this newest client is OpenAI, which is developing its own inference processor known as Titan under the leadership of Richard Ho, a former Google TPU engineer.

Nvidia still dominates the market of course – by some way – with its Blackwell GB300 NVL72, but deploying such rackscale systems is expensive, and firms with massive AI models want hardware designed to better match their needs.

Custom ASICs are seen as a way to rein in costs while offering greater flexibility than an off-the-shelf GPU and Broadcom is well positioned to guide complex accelerator projects through design, production, and packaging.

On a call with Wall Street analysts, chief executive Hock Tan expanded on Broadcom’s unnamed fourth client (cough, OpenAI, cough), saying, “Now further to these three customers, as we had previously mentioned, we have been working with other prospects on their own AI accelerators.”

“Last quarter, one of these prospects released production orders to Broadcom, and we have accordingly characterized them as a qualified customer for XPUs and, in fact, have secured over $10 billion of orders of AI racks based on our XPUs,” Tan continued.

“And reflecting this, we now expect the outlook for our fiscal 2026 AI revenue to improve significantly from what we had indicated last quarter.”

That $10 billion figure refers to complete AI rack systems, not Broadcom’s share for the underlying chip design.

Revenue from those orders is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of fiscal 2026.

It’s clear that Nvidia’s biggest buyers are no longer content to depend solely on GPUs, and by investing in ASICs they are betting that custom hardware will bring efficiency and control. With its expertise, Broadcom is positioning itself as the company that can make those designs a reality.
