The World of ‘Dark Crystal’ May Not Be as Finished as We Thought

by admin October 3, 2025

Jim Henson’s incredible fantasy film, The Dark Crystal, is returning to theaters next week, but that may not be the last time audiences see it on the big screen. Speaking to io9 about the Fathom re-release, filmmaker Brian Henson teased that even though Netflix’s prequel series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is unlikely to come back, that isn’t necessarily the end of the franchise.

“I can’t really comment on development, but what I will say is we will continue to create within this universe,” Henson said. “We’ve looked at several potential tracks and a movie might be one of them… You still have a lot of moving parts in the world of Dark Crystal that can create drama and conflict that can generate another story in that world.”

So what exactly does that mean? Could we be getting a new Dark Crystal movie? As Henson said, he wouldn’t comment on development. But that there’s more story to be told in the world of The Dark Crystal is simultaneously obvious and unexpected.

It was back in 2019 when Netflix released its incredible prequel series, Age of Resistance. That series took everything fans knew and loved about the 1982 original and made it bigger, better, and more engrossing. It was clear the world of Thra was ripe for further explanation, especially when the story begged for a second season. Unfortunately, that second season is unlikely to happen, and Henson admitted he wasn’t surprised.

“Netflix [was] really great,” he said. “They allowed the money to be spent that was needed to really do it right, and [Age of Resistance] is a beautiful, beautiful piece. But… they’re a streamer. Their whole point is to get a whole bunch of subscribers that we wouldn’t otherwise get. So they knew by making Age of Resistance that we’re going to get all of the hardcore fantasy fans who weren’t subscribed to subscribe. Season two? It’s the same group. So I was disappointed but not at all surprised that they didn’t want to drop that much money again for another season.”

So who might drop money for more Dark Crystal, if not Netflix? Again, there’s no comment. But clearly, if you look at the rumors surrounding another big Henson fantasy film, Labyrinth, you see that there is certainly interest out there. Fingers crossed we get back to Thra sooner rather than later.

And, as we mentioned, you can go back next week. Fathom Events is rereleasing the film in 4K on October 12 and 13 with a special new introduction by Henson. Get tickets and showtimes here. Then, check back next week for more Dark Crystal.

Crystal Dynamics subject to more layoffs following Perfect Dark cancellation

by admin August 30, 2025

Crystal Dynamics has announced the “difficult decision” to lay off more staff, citing “evolving business conditions”. It added the decision was not made lightly, but was necessary to “ensure the long-term health of our studio and core creative priorities in a continually shifting market”.

In a post shared on LinkedIn, the studio thanked those impacted by these layoffs for their “hard work, talent and passion”, stating Crystal Dynamics is “committed to offering the full extent of support and resources at our disposal during this transition”.

It went on to additionally thank the rest of its team, as well as its community and partners for the “continued support” as the studio builds a “creative, sustainable, and resilient tomorrow together”.

The next entry in the Tomb Raider series – which is being developed in collaboration with Amazon – is not affected by these most recent layoffs at Crystal Dynamics.

This week’s layoffs follow the cancellation of Perfect Dark earlier this year by Microsoft. While the reboot was being helmed by The Initiative, Crystal Dynamics was supporting the project.

Well this is it. I was let go from Crystal Dynamics as Perfect Dark was cancelled. I am now out of a job. I genuinely dont know what to do at this moment but to frantically apply for as many jobs that are applicable. If anyone needs a Senior Environment Artist of 10+ years, please let me know.

The studio previously laid off 17 staff members in March of this year. At this time, Crystal Dynamics said this was “necessary to better align our current business needs and the studio’s future success”, and was “not a reflection of the dedication or ability of those affected”.

This is a news-in-brief story. This is part of our vision to bring you all the big news as part of a daily live report.

Tomb Raider Developer Crystal Dynamics Lays Off An Unknown Number Of Staff

by admin August 29, 2025

Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics announced an unknown number of layoffs yesterday, vaguely citing “evolving business decisions,” as the reason.

The studio shared the news on LinkedIn, writing that the decision wasn’t made lightly and was made to “ensure the long-term health of our studio and core creative priorities in a continually shifting market.”

“To those impacted – we recognize and thank you for your hard work, talent, and passion. We are committed to offering the full extent of support and resources at our disposal during this transition,” reads Crystal Dynamics’ statement.

The message ends with confirmation that the future of Tomb Raider, including an upcoming new title, will be unaffected by the layoffs.

Tomb Raider (2013)

Crystal Dynamics does not elaborate further, but it’s worth noting the studio had been working on the recently canceled reboot of Perfect Dark alongside the game’s primary – and now defunct – developer, The Initiative. It’s hard to imagine this didn’t have some factor in yesterday’s layoffs.

The news comes after the studio laid off 17 employees in March. As of now, Crystal Dynamics, which was acquired by Embracer Group in 2022, has a new single-player Tomb Raider title in the works. First announced in 2022, the project will be published by Amazon Games and built in Unreal Engine 5. We know little about the game beyond this, and a release window is unknown.

Crystal Dynamics has not shipped a new triple-A title since the polarizing Marvel’s Avengers in 2020, though it collaborated with Aspyr on Tomb Raider I-III/IV-VI Remastered collections, released in 2024 and 2025, respectively, and 2024’s Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered.

Tomb Raider developers Crystal Dynamics lay off more staff, say the series’ future is “unaffected”

by admin August 28, 2025

Tomb Raider developers Crystal Dynamics have laid off an unspecified number of staff, their second round of jobs cuts this year. The studio say that the future of the Tomb Raider series won’t be affected by this latest taking away of folks’ livelihoods.

The news comes not too long after the Perfect Dark reboot Crystal Dynamics were working alongside The Initiative was cancelled amid Microsoft’s mass cuts in July. The Initiative were shut down as part of that culling.

Crystal Dynamics announced these layoffs via LinkedIn post, which neglected to mention exactly how many staff had been let go.

“Today we made the very difficult decision to part ways with a number of our talented colleagues as the result of evolving business conditions,” they wrote. “This decision was not made lightly. It was necessary, however, to ensure the long-term health of our studio and core creative priorities in a continually shifting market. To those impacted – we recognize and thank you for your hard work, talent, and passion. We are committed to offering the full extent of support and resources at our disposal during this transition.”

Crystal Dynamics added that the future of Tomb Raider is “unaffected” by these job cuts. There’s currently a new Tomb Raider in the works, and it’s set to be published by Amazon.

Among the former Crystal Dynamics staff who’ve shared that they’re among those laid off are senior animator Jaron Gittleman and senior designer Matthew Angus. “Well it finally happened,” Gittleman wrote on LinkedIn. “After nearly 8 long years I’ve been laid off from Crystal Dynamics. It’s been a helluva run. From Avengers to Tomb Raider to Perfect Dark it has been a journey of a ton of growth. I learned so much and worked with some of the best. I’ll miss them dearly.”

Best of luck to all affected.

Crystal Dynamics lays off “a number of talented colleagues”

by admin August 27, 2025

Crystal Dynamics has laid off “a number of talented colleagues,” blaming “evolving business conditions.”

In a statement, the studio said the decision “was not made lightly,” but was “necessary” to ensure the “long-term health of our studio and core creative priorities in a continually shifting market.”

“To those impacted — we recognize and thank you for your hard work, talent, and passion. We are committed to offering the full extent of support and resources at our disposal during this transition,” the studio said.

“To our teams, players, and partners, thank you for your continued support as we build a creative, sustainable, and resilient tomorrow together. This includes the future of Tomb Raider, which remains unaffected by this decision.”

It’s unclear at this time how many people have been impacted, or what support they have been given.

This is not the first time Crystal Dynamics has downsized this year. The company laid off 17 employees to “better align with [its] current business needs” back in March, and following ten prior job cuts in September 2023.
