The Return of the ‘Razor Crest’ in ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Sucks

When Lucasfilm surprise dropped our very first trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu this week, the first thing we saw was a very familiar ship: the bulky chrome body (now bedecked in stripes of yellow paint) and the barrel-shaped twin engines jutting out of either side. It was meant to invoke one thought to anyone who’s watched the show: the Razor Crest is back.

The thing is, the Razor Crest was blown into itty-bitty bits during the climax of The Mandalorian season two. We don’t know yet whether or not, months or a year or so later, Din Djarin managed to go back to Tython and collect all the remaining scrap from his old ride to be put back together—probably not, considering that The Book of Boba Fett dedicated an episode to Din getting a new ride in the form of a Naboo N-1 Starfighter. But whether or not he found the time to go back or just simply managed to buy another ship of the same type, an ST-70 Gunship is not really what the return of a ship that looks identical to the one he used to fly around in really says.

It mostly just says, “That thing you know is back.” Which The Mandalorian has gotten, for good or ill, very good at saying; it’s now just applying that to something that’s been gone for a season and a bit of TV, rather than things we know from other old Star Wars material. And it’s just the latest in a long line of things that The Mandalorian, as a show, has given up on in terms of displaying any kind of real growth for its lead characters.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I didn’t particularly like the show’s new choice of ship for Din either. Going from an unwieldy metal brick of a transport ship to a slick, stripped-down starfighter—even putting aside the nostalgia play of it being a ship fans knew and recognized, instead of a new design like the Razor Crest had been when it was introduced—didn’t make sense for a character that was ostensibly still trying to be the bounty hunter he had been.

The N-1 was a hero’s ship, one that reflected that, for better or worse, Din’s status in the Star Wars galaxy had changed: he was no longer the lone wanderer just making his way on the fringes of the galaxy; he was thrust into the upper echelons of Star Wars‘ heroes and villains, rubbing shoulders with Luke Skywalker and being the onetime inheritor, whether he wanted to be or not, of the Mandalorian people’s legacy. He was recognized as recognizable and needed a vessel to match that.

The Razor Crest, in a lot of ways, represented the imperfect man we’d come to know over the course of The Mandalorian‘s debut season—it’s not a cool ship, it’s not decked out with a bazillion weapon hardpoints, it wasn’t luxurious inside or out, it was practical, rugged, the Star Wars equivalent of a hauling truck, and that made it perfect for a bounty hunter scrounging around from job to job. Replacing it with a starfighter that was distinctly impractical for the job of bounty hunting but was also the antithesis of everything that made the Razor Crest feel unique, felt like the show forcibly telling us that Din was moving on and accepting his new place in the galaxy, even if that new place was beholden to Star Wars‘ broader yearning for the familiar.

Now, in The Mandalorian and Grogu, Din has kept that new status quo while also returning to familiarity with this “new” ship. There’s no moving on or mark of what his life was like when The Mandalorian first began anymore. Now he is more explicitly that unequivocal hero, allied with the New Republic, and brushing shoulders with familiar faces over and over. Because the Razor Crest itself has now become something Star Wars can mine for nostalgia, as much as one can mine nostalgia for something that’s just six years old (and has been gone for most of those six years). Now we can be sold all those Razor Crest toys again, except they’ve got yellow paint markings on them. She’s got a new hat!

But really it’s not the ship itself that is necessarily a problem here (again, I liked what The Mandalorian said about Din through his ship of choice in its first two seasons a lot), but what this return represents overall: The Mandalorian finds it really hard to let go of any potential opportunity for growth. The Razor Crest‘s return pales in comparison, narratively speaking, to the number of character throughlines that the series has set up and then promptly dropped. Seasons one and two set up a compelling arc of Din coming to question the orthodoxy of his own Mandalorian covert—and, through characters like Bo-Katan, the idea that there were other ways for him to exist and be Mandalorian outside of those not necessarily healthy teachings—climaxing in both his decision to remove his helmet and to give up Grogu to be trained as a Jedi.

All that immediately turned around in season three, which opened with an arc of almost-penitence for Din, running back unequivocally into the arms and teachings of the covert with little engagement as to why he should do that. And that he did so with Grogu at his side again—a separation resolved between seasons in that aforementioned Book of Boba Fett appearance, largely at the heinous expense of mishandling the character of Luke Skywalker—was just further indication that the show could not imagine a way to follow through with the shifts in its status quo that it laid out. Din Djarin can only be the faceless adherent of the Way; only he can guide Grogu’s path, and now, he can only pilot that one kind of ship you know he piloted before.

It’s a strange sense of inertia that feels jarring as Din becomes the face of Star Wars‘ return to cinema at a time when the series needs newness to guide its way rather than resting on the laurels of familiarity. A couple splashes of paint just simply aren’t enough compared to the message The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s debut trailer sent: that sensation of newness has yet to be found here.

Silksong sickos have already painstakingly determined the DPS of every crest in the game, and you might want to switch off Reaper

Visic on YouTube and D4CLoveTrainn on the Silksong subreddit are two Silksongers of the admirably deranged, number crunching variety: Each one independently tested the DPS of every crest (weapon moveset) in the game, and their results exactly corroborate each other.

Such analysis is possible thanks to XiaoHaiNB’s ShowDamage HealthBar mod on the Nexus, which reveals both a bar and the hidden numerical value of every enemy’s health. The DPS values focus on damage from straight nail attacks, with both authors noting that this doesn’t show the whole story: General feel, platforming utility, charged attacks, and tool/spell combos are all factors to consider as well. That said, here are their numbers, with Visic reporting flat damage at max upgrades, while D4CLoveTrainn shows percentage (plus or minus) vs. the base Hunter crest.

  • Beast with temporary buff: 78.9 / +55%
  • Hunter (with max no-hit bonus): 69.4 / +36%
  • Wanderer: 68.3 / +34%
  • Beast (no buff): 52.4 / +0%
  • Hunter (no bonus): 50.9 / +0%
  • Architect: 50.2 / +0%
  • Witch: 45.7 / -10%
  • Reaper: 41.6 / -18%
  • Shaman: 41.5 / -18%

Both crest investigators praised Architect’s charge attack, which offers a powerful multihit with high burst damage. Indeed, Architect’s middle of the road DPS is less of an issue with that attack in mind, as well as its focus on using Silksong’s powerful tools as opposed to regular attacks.

Beast and Hunter at the top slightly oversell them, as they require a great deal of skill and timing to take advantage of: Beast is tied to a five second buff that triggers when you heal, and Hunter’s max damage requires landing 12 hits in succession without taking damage yourself—though there is also a middle bonus for just six hits in a row.

Which leaves my go-to, the Wanderer, as the de facto nail attack DPS king when it comes to consistent, real world use. Wanderer also just feels good, with attacks that come out super fast and a more straightforward down air “pogo” move like in the first Hollow Knight, as opposed to the Hunter’s diagonal dive.

But even with Architect and Wanderer looking like the real S-tier picks, I’m impressed at how balanced the movesets still are overall. Wanderer is held back slightly by suboptimal tool slots, while even the bottom of the barrel Reaper, with low DPS and no game changing bonus, has a niche as a long range, relatively “safe” pick with a nice feel. Shaman has a spellcasting specialization, while Witch has a unique offensive heal and strong charge attack in its own right. Hunter and Beast, meanwhile, seem like they could have a lot to offer high-skill players who can avoid getting hit or take advantage of a limited attack window⁠—D4CLoveTrainn sees speedrun potential in them.

Both authors have more to their analysis than just DPS numbers, like potential tool combos with different crests. Visic also breaks down damage per hit for different moves, while D4CLoveTrainn shows the damage bonus for each level of nail upgrade, plus a subjective assessment of how each crest feels to play. They’re worth diving into for Silksicko power gamers. As for me, I’m just going to keep hitting things with crazy Wanderer DPS.

How to get the Wanderer Crest in Silksong

The Wanderer Crest is an optional upgrade in Hollow Knight: Silksong that transforms Hornet’s attack patterns and playstyle.

Essentially, the Wanderer Crest is the counterpart to the Reaper Crest, trading the latter’s stronger-but-slower attacks for quick, successive strikes. While the former does less damage per swing, each attack is faster, granting Hornet better mobility and evasive capabilities.

To get this upgrade, however, you’ll need to venture through the dank Wormways. Here’s everything you need to know about getting your hands on the Wanderer Crest.

Where to find the Wanderer Crest

The Wanderer Crest is obtained from the Wanderer Chapel in Bone Bottom. While it’s located in one of Silksong’s first areas, though, it won’t be immediately accessible. Before beginning the journey, you’ll first need to acquire the Drifter’s Cloak from Far Fields by following the story.

Once you’ve obtained that nifty upgrade, return to Bone Bottom via Bellway and climb above the town until you reach a series of cages hanging in the sky. You’ll need to use the Dash and Drifter’s Cloak to traverse these and reach the Western side of the chasm.

If you’re in the correct place, you should find an entrance to a new zone, the Wormways.

The Wormways is a relatively small zone containing no boss. However, it’s extremely dark, cramped, and per its namesake, infested with giant worms that hamper your traversal.

To reach the Wanderer Chapel, you’ll want to enter Wormways via the southernmost entrance and head West. Keep going past the first hole in the floor and drop down the second. Keep following this path until you reach the zone-break pictured above.

You’ll now be back in Bone Bottom, but on the far Western side, past the sewer drain blocked off from the East. Make sure to go this direction first to flip a switch and open the shortcut, allowing you easy access to the Bone Bottom town and Bench.

Once that’s done and assuming you’re coming from the Bone Bottom Bench, simply head as far West as possible to reach the Wanderer Chapel. See the picture below for reference.

Complete the Wanderer Chapel combat trial

Just like the Reaper Chapel, you’ll need to traverse a small, linear dungeon to reach a combat trial. Once you enter the trial room, you’ll be locked in and required to defeat several waves of enemies.

Emerge victorious, and the doors will swing open, allowing you to progress to the inner sanctum and claim your reward, the Wanderer Crest.

Fans of the original Hollow Knight are likely to favor this Crest, as it replaces Hornet’s moveset with that of the first game’s titular hero.

Unlike Hunter and Reaper, the Wanderer Crest has no blue tool slot by default. Instead, you’ll have one red and two yellow, and will need to use Memory Lockets found in the world to add more blue or red slots.

How to get the Reaper Crest in Silksong

The Reaper Crest is a powerful upgrade in Hollow Knight: Silksong that completely alters Hornet’s attack patterns and playstyle.

In addition to making her standard attacks do more damage – the trade-off being a slower attack speed – the Reaper Crest also allows Hornet to generate more Silk from defeated enemies, allowing her to heal and use Silk skills more often.

To get the upgrade, however, you’ll have to first get to Greymoor. Here’s everything you need to know about getting your hands on the Reaper Crest.

Where to find the Reaper Crest

The Reaper Crest is obtained from the Reaper Chapel in Greymoor. However, getting hold of the upgrade isn’t as simple as walking in the front door and taking your spoils.

In order to reach the Crest, you’ll first need to traverse the Chapel and complete a combat trial at the end. See the Chapel’s entrance marked on Greymoor’s map below.

If you’re having trouble finding the Chapel without the Greymoor map, you can return to Bone Bottom to purchase it for Rosary Beads from Shakra or find her on the East side of Greymoor. A Bellway to fast travel back to Bone Bottom can be found almost directly East of the Chapel, as shown on the map.

Once you’ve found the Chapel, head inside.

Complete the Reaper Chapel combat trial

The Reaper Chapel is a relatively small, mostly linear side dungeon. Descend the Chapel’s platforms while sticking to the Eastern wall until you find a vertical corridor that loops counterclockwise back towards the entrance.

In the final room, you’ll be locked in and required to defeat a series of increasingly difficult enemies. Triumph, and the final door will open, leading to the inner sanctum and your reward, the Reaper Crest.

Like the default Crest Hornet starts with, the Reaper Crest comes with one yellow, red, and blue tool slot, with one more of each able to be added with the use of upgrade materials.

In addition to the additional damage and Silk generation, the Reaper Crest replaces Hornet’s 45-degree angle dive with a more vertical aerial attack, making bouncing off red bulbs and other rebound surfaces much easier.
