Octopath Traveler 0 Limits Your Town’s Size On Different Consoles

by admin September 8, 2025

Another dang Monday!? Didn’t we do this already? Fine, whatever, let’s go again. Welcome to Morning Checkpoint, Kotaku’s daily round-up of news and other stuff you might care about. Today, we have news about the next Wolfenstein game, information on how Nintendo develops new ideas, a trailer for the next Knives Out film, and bad news for people planning to play Octopath Traveler 0 on Switch.

Your city’s size in Octopath Traveler 0 depends on what platform you play on

In December, Square Enix’s Octopath Traveler 0 will launch and, in addition to questing through dungeons and slaying monsters, players will be building a new town in this upcoming RPG. But how big your in-game town can be will not be dependent on your skill or determination. As recently revealed by Square Enix and spotted by Wario64, the maximum size of your city will depend on what platform you play Octopath Traveler 0 on, with weaker consoles being more limited than PC and newer machines.

— Wario64 (@Wario64) September 5, 2025

The OG Switch has a 250 building limit. Meanwhile, the Switch 2 and PS4 max out at 400 buildings. Finally, if you want 500 buildings (and who doesn’t?), you’ll need to play the RPG on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, or PC.  As you might expect, where you play decides your max FPS and resolution, too, which are also included in the chart above. Lots to think about for Octopath fans ahead of the game’s December 4 release date.

MachineGames hopes to make a third Wolfenstein game

While Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was a fantastic video game and one of the best Indy adventures yet, it wasn’t what I wanted from developer MachineGames. What I wanted was a new Wolfenstein game. It felt like there was at least one more story to be told with the studio’s version of BJ, and it turns out that’s in fact the case.

In NoClip’s newly released documentary about the history of MachineGames and the making of its Wolfenstein series, co-founder and studio head Jerk Gustafsson confirmed that the plan from day one was always to make a trilogy. And that’s still the plan, assuming the studio gets a chance to make one more Wolfenstein game.

“I think this is important to say, because we have always seen this as a trilogy. So that journey for BJ – even during those first weeks at id, when we mapped out New Order – we still had a plan for at least that character. What will happen in the second one. What will happen in the third one. I think that’s important to say because, at least I hope, that we’re not done with Wolfenstein yet. We have a story to tell.”

Nintendo doesn’t need new franchises

Former Nintendo developer and programmer Ken Watanabe told Bloomberg that the company doesn’t really have a need to create new franchises, as it can simply incorporate new mechanics and ideas into one of its existing and already established IP.

“New franchises haven’t come out simply because there’s no real need to make them,” Watanabe told the outlet. “When Nintendo wants to do something new, it’s basically about the gameplay mechanics first — about creating a new way to play. As for the skin or the wrapper, they don’t really fuss over it. They just pick whatever fits that new gameplay best.”

Schedule 1 will add shrooms, which apparently weren’t in the game before

Schedule 1, the super-popular drug-dealing simulator on Steam, recently asked players what they wanted added to the game next, and the fanbase voted for shrooms. Which is fine, but also weird to me. It’s not weird that people playing a game about drugs want more drug variety, but, weirdly, shrooms weren’t in Schedule 1 to begin with. Anyway, shrooms will be added around November as a free update. Meanwhile, fishing fans, you lost out, and that feature won’t be added to the game in the near future. Sorry.

Yooka-Laylee remaster comes to consoles and PC on October 9

by admin August 30, 2025

Yooka-Replaylee, the remaster of the platformer Yooka-Laylee, will be available on October 9. It’ll be playable on PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and Switch 2. It’s getting both a digital and physical release, and preorders for the physical versions are up right now.

Speaking of physical copies, the Switch 2 version will include the full game on the cartridge and no game-key card. Nintendo has given developers the option to release cartridges that are basically empty shells, called game-key cards, that require an immediate download upon being slotted in the console. Collectors aren’t exactly keen on this practice, so an actual cartridge release for Yooka-Replaylee is a welcome bit of news.

This is a remade and enhanced version of Yooka-Laylee, which was itself an homage to 3D collectathon platformers like Banjo-Kazooie. Developer Playtonic is staffed with people who worked on Rare titles like the aforementioned Banjo and the Donkey Kong Country games.

Yooka-Replaylee brings some new features to the table, including updated challenges, a fully orchestral soundtrack and, of course, more stuff to collect. There’s also a bigger map, a refined story and enhanced graphics. It looks pretty nifty.

The digital version of the game will cost $30, while physical copies will cost $50. There’s a promotion going for long-time fans, as those who already own the game will get 30 percent off so long as they buy the remaster on the same platform family as the original. This means Switch to Switch 2, PS4 to PS5 and Xbox One to Xbox Series X/S.

Skate 4 Is Finally Launching On Consoles & PC In September

by admin August 27, 2025

Electronic Arts and developers Full Circle announced that after years of waiting and fans begging for a new game, the upcoming Skate reboot will launch in September in early access on consoles and PC.

On August 26, EA posted a short trailer for the next Skate game, which is confusingly just titled Skate, and finally confirmed an early access release date. Previously, the publisher had teased that it would be out sometime this year and later promised it would be out this summer. But now we know that the new, online-only Skate reboot is launching on September 16. Mark your calendars and set aside some time to kickflip. Or crash. You’ll probably be crashing a lot.  Here’s the new trailer:

We are so hyped to announce that skate. will release in Early Access September 16th, 2025. See you in San Vansterdam! 🛹 pic.twitter.com/3tR3onovwb

— skate. (@skate) August 26, 2025

This new Skate reboot will be an online-only multiplayer-focused open-world adventure featuring over 100 songs and up to 150 players skating together in a single session. The game is set in San Vansterdam, a city built from the ground up by EA and Open Circle to be the dream playground for all skateboarders.

It’s been a long wait for this new Skate game. EA first revealed it was working on a new Skate in 2020 after years of fans begging them to make it. Since then, the game has been leaked a few times, and EA has put out early, unfinished footage of Skate as part of a plan to be more transparent about the open-world skateboarding game’s development. Skate has also been playtested by fans in the lead-up to its launch. The new Skate arrives on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on September 16.

Huge Path of Exile 2 changes coming

I’m not sure if this is bad news or not, but Path of Exile 2 definitely won’t make a full, 1.0 release this year. There was, if you remember, a chance it might. But those plans have been upended by a need to reblanace and sort out some existing areas of the game. In other words, the playerbase isn’t currently thrilled with the game, so developer Grinding Gear Games is addressing that.

The other major hold-up is story content. The Early Access release came with three of six story acts, and the fourth is only just being added to the game, in a huge Third Edict update due 29th August, which will coincide with a free weekend to play the game, by the way. The game can’t launch until the fifth act has been added and tested, so my guess – given the game’s quarterly release schedule – is that we might not see a 1.0 release until June 2026. There, that’s my guesstimate in writing.

I’m OK with that, though. There’s no rush. And watching a video rundown of everything coming in the Third Edict update – and everything changing in it – reminds me how exciting Path of Exile 2 can be. Check out my fuller report compiled after a press briefing, below.

The Rogue Prince of Persia is officially out for PC and consoles

by admin August 20, 2025

Ubisoft and Evil Empire’s long-awaited The Rogue Prince of Persia is finally out and available for purchase. It’s been in early access on Steam for over a year and the developers have made plenty of changes during that time to get the game ready for a general launch.

It’s available for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X/S and PS5. It’s also playable in the cloud by using the Xbox Cloud service, Ubisoft+ and Amazon Luna. Nintendo fans will have to wait a bit longer. The game’s coming to the Switch and Switch 2, but not until later this year.

For the uninitiated, The Rogue Prince of Persia is a sidescrolling roguelike with plenty of fast-paced action and a graceful move set inspired by other games in the franchise. Co-developer Evil Empire is the company behind the iconic Dead Cells, which is also a sidescrolling roguelike.

Since launching in early access, developers have added more biomes and a new story, in addition to refining the gameplay and character designs. If you’ve been hankering for a new roguelike with some light Metroidvania elements (just like Dead Cells), this could be the game you’ve been waiting for. It costs $30.

Tropico 7 announced for PC and consoles, and it’s coming to Game Pass on day one

by admin August 20, 2025

El Presidentes assemble! Tropico 7 – the latest entry in Kalypso Media’s Caribbean-set city building sim – is official and heading to Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Game Pass next year.

The original Tropico debuted in 2001, melding elements of city building, resource management, and political wrangling that gave players the freedom to run their tropical island either as a feared dictator or peace-loving statesman. The series has changed hands multiple times since then, with developer Limbic Entertainment taking the reins for 2019’s Tropico 6.

As for the newly revealed Tropico 7, it’s being helmed by Gaming Minds Studios (Port Royale 4, Railway Empire 2) and features a new story campaign playing out across 5 maps. That’s alongside 20 additional sandbox maps, a random map generator, and 10 extra scenarios. There’s also talk of new terraforming tools, a new council feature serving as a focal point for your political machinations, a new nemesis in Victoria Guerra, and more.

Tropico 7 announcement trailer.Watch on YouTube

Tropico 7 arrives sometime next year for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5, and will be joining Xbox Game Pass on launch day. You’ll find the full list of currently announced features below.

  • Lead your nation to new heights: Tropico 7 tells El Presidente’s continuous success story across 5 campaign maps – starring himself, Penultimo and a new nemesis: Victoria Guerra.
  • More is more: Archipelagos, with the biggest islands ever in the series, await your rule, expanded with 10 extra scenarios, more than 20 sandbox maps, and endless possibilities with a random map generator.
  • Move mountains – literally: Erase them, create beaches, or even create entirely new islands! The new terraforming feature brings your megalomaniac dreams to life. Start that mammoth project – NOW!
  • Bollocks uhm… Politics: Navigate the snares and pits of internal politics, when you summon the different factions to your council, a new way to meet them face to face while you pulverize their dreams – or use them for a BIG DEAL to your own advantage.
  • Make the world your playground: Elections, election speeches and a vast portfolio of edicts depending on your political standing spice up your daily rule while you juggle foreign affairs and occasionally steal… uhm relocate a landmark to revel in its benefits.
  • Built to prosper: Strategically place buildings to make use of synergy effects, keep citizen satisfaction high, and fill any unused plots of land with beautiful parks in a freely customised size.
  • Generalissimo No. 1: Eliminate those pesky rebels and fend off foreign threats with a reworked military system enabling more direct control of your military units.
  • Always judge a book by its cover: Customise the appearance of your palace and El Presidente with new and creative options.

Sony Raising Price On PS5 Consoles In America Tomorrow

by admin August 20, 2025

Sony has announced that it is raising prices on all versions of the PlayStation 5 in America. The increased prices go into effect on August 21, giving folks little time to plan ahead of the price hike.

All new PS5 consoles will now cost $50 more in the United States. Here are the new prices:

  • PlayStation 5 – $549.99
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99
  • PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99

“Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment,” said Sony in a very short blog post announcing the news. “As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21.”

This is a developing story…
