EA's Black Panther game reportedly cancelled and studio closed, resulting in more layoffs

Despite Black Panther cancellation, EA confirms it still has “at least three” Marvel games in the works

by admin May 29, 2025

Following EA’s decision to pull the plug on its Black Panther game and close the studio making it, the publisher has insisted the move doesn’t reflect a change to its partnership with Marvel, and confirmed it still has “at least three” additional Marvel games in development.

Little had been revealed of EA’s Black Panther game since its announcement in 2023, and word of its cancellation – alongside yet more layoffs at the company – arrived earlier this week. Commenting on the decision to end development in an email to employees, EA Entertainment president Laura Miele said the move would help the publisher “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities”.

Miele also stressed developer EA Motive’s Iron Man game was unaffected, but Black Panther’s cancellation – which comes as the publisher continues a planned retreat away from “future licensed IP” – had some commentators wondering if the company’s previously announced three-game deal with Marvel could be wrapping up prematurely.

Now, however, EA has confirmed to IGN that not only is the deal alive and well, the company is still working on “at least three” Marvel games following Black Panther’s termination. “The multi-title, long-term relationship between Marvel Games and EA… remains strong,” an EA spokesperson told the publication. “Development of our console and PC titles, beginning with Marvel’s Iron Man, is led by Motive Studios.”

Black Panther’s cancellation and subsequent job cuts follow a string of similar incidents at EA this year. In April, the company laid off more than 300 employees, with Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi studio Respawn Entertainment losing around 100 staff. At the same time, EA cancelled a number of in-development projects – reportedly including a new Titanfall game – as part of what it called a “continued focus on our long-term strategic priorities”. Still more layoffs were confirmed last month, following EA’s decision to end its licensing partnership with the WRC.

A second Black Panther project unconnected with EA – Skydance Games’ Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, from Uncharted writer Amy Hennig – was recently delayed into next year.

MindsEye studio confirms its map editory bits come from the weird “community-driven gaming platform” that was originally set to host it, clearing up like 5% of the confusion

by admin May 29, 2025

MindsEye, the GTA-ish, Cyberpunk-ish action game about fighting killer AI bots that also includes UGC systems that’ll let you create your own races and levels actually pulled those systems from the weird platform thingy it was originally planned to launch as part of.

That’s according to Leslie Benzies-helmed studio Build a Rocket Boy, which has confirmed to VGC that this is the case, but hasn’t indicated what it means for the future of that weird “community-driven gaming platform where you can build, remix, and play together in a vast connected world” – Everywhere.

The level and race-building systems included in MindsEye were a big part of its gameplay trailer the other day. Christened Build.MindsEye (the bit where you build stuff) and Play.MindsEye (the bit where you share stuff you’ve built so people can give it a go), it turns out these two bits comprise a creation suite dubbed Arcadia, which Build a Rocket Boy has now confirmed is the same creation suite developed for Everywhere.

“As with all new products, things evolve,” the studio said, “Arcadia was originally envisioned as our creation platform, but as we continued developing MindsEye and building out BARB’s ecosystem, it naturally grew into something more focused — Play.MindsEye and Build.MindsEye.”

It went on to re-iterate that those two creatory bits go alongside MindsEye’s campaign to form “three seamlessly interconnected experiences”, adding: “For BARB to fully realize our vision, we had to beta test our creation system with a community of builders in real-time and started with Everywhere while we were in stealth mode developing MindsEye.”

Ok, cool. What does that mean for Everywhere, the website link of which VGC points out now redirects you to MindsEye’s website? Well, the studio hasn’t said. VG247 has reached out to Build a Rocket Boy for comment on that.

So, to recap as I understand it, prior to becoming a standalone game punlished by IO Interactive, MindsEye was originally set to be launched as a part of weird platform thingy Everywhere. Now, it turns out some bits of Everywhere are part of MindsEye, and it’s not clear whether Everywhere is going somewhere. Easy.

In other MindsEye-related news, Build A Rocket Boy’s co-ceo seemingly suggested on Discord the other day that he thinks there might be some kind of co-ordinated campaign to make people think it’s crap.

ASRock confirms its BIOS settings are killing Ryzen CPUs, is fully committed to fixing any damaged motherboards

by admin May 29, 2025

ASRock confirmed that it is responsible Ryzen 9000 failures plaguing ASRock motherboard owners. In a discussion between Gamers Nexus and ASRock’s VP of motherboards, Chris Lee, the company confirmed its latest BIOS revision, 3.25, alters certain PBO settings to stop Ryzen 9000 chips from failing.

A few days ago, YouTuber Tech Yes City revealed that ASRock had allegedly solved its Ryzen 9000 problem. The issue surrounded three power and voltage-related functions, Electric Design Current (EDC) and Thermal Design Current (TDC) in Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO), and shadow voltages which were set too high in older ASRock firmware. ASRock has since provided BIOS version 3.25 to its armada of AM5 motherboards with re-tuned EDC, TDC, and shadow voltage settings to rectify the issue.

ASRock confirmed to Gamers Nexus that it is solely responsible, and AMD’s chips aren’t causing problems. ASRock also stated it will cover shipping costs both ways if users RMA their motherboards. However, it notes that it has not seen a single damaged motherboard in this whole ordeal.

If customers RMA their motherboard with the faulty CPU, ASRock will automatically send the CPU back to the retailer from which the customer bought it. ASRock is not recommending users RMA this way; rather, this was to clarify what happens if this scenario occurs (particularly for less tech-savvy focused customers).

ASRock also recommends that users check if BIOS version 3.25 is installed on brand-new AM5 ASRock motherboards and not to assume it is already preloaded from the factory. ASRock also apologized for not being as transparent with customers about the problem as it could be.

This is the second time ASRock has had to provide BIOS updates to fix its “Ryzen 9000 death” problem. The first time, ASRock pinned the Ryzen 9000 failures on memory compatibility issues and claimed initially that the problem was fixed with a new BIOS update that rectified the memory compatibility issues. Only time will tell if ASRock’s second attempt will be successful.

Evidence has already emerged that ASRock has not fully resolved this issue. At least two Reddit reports online claim that their Ryzen 7 9800X3Ds died with the 3.25 BIOS update.

Bitcoin Steady as US Confirms Economy Shrank in Q1

by admin May 29, 2025

In brief

  • The U.S. confirmed its economy contracted by an annualized 0.2% in Q1 2025, marking the first economic contraction since 2022.
  • The economic slowdown follows President Trump’s global trade war that imposed tariffs up to 104% on over 180 countries.
  • Bitcoin and crypto markets have shown a muted response to the economic news, with Bitcoin trading flat, Ethereum up 1.1%.

The U.S. economy has had its first contraction since 2022, revised official statistics revealed on Thursday, as the economy shrank by an annualized 0.2% during the first quarter of 2025.

If this sounds like déjà vu, it’s because the U.S. reported initial data at the end of April and published its final and revised report Thursday morning.

Since the economic slowdown isn’t entirely a surprise, the response from the cryptocurrency market has largely been muted. At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading flat, Ethereum bucked the trend by climbing 1.1%, and XRP dropped just 0.4% in the past day. The largest mover in the top 10 tokens by market capitalization is Solana which has fallen 1.3% on the day.

Revised figures show the gross domestic product—the value of goods and services provided within a country—decreased by 0.2% in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2025.

The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis said the decrease in U.S. gross domestic product (GDP), the value of goods and services provided within a country, reflects an increase in imports and decrease in government spending.

This follows President Trump’s global trade war, which saw more than 180 countries slapped with tariffs of up to 104%. Markets broadly tanked as Trump applied, revised, and reapplied tariffs to a number of major trade partners, including China, the UK, and Europe.

Recently, the trade war has appeared to ease with Trump extending the deadline for the European Union negotiations and the U.S. reaching an agreement with China. With that, Bitcoin broke through to a new all-time high as the market reacted favorably to Trump’s retreats.

But, it appears the trade war period wasn’t without its economic consequences.

Compared to the fourth quarter of 2024, which saw a 2.4% gain in GDP, the Bureau of Economic Analysis report revealed a clear deceleration in consumer spending. That’s on top of an increase in imports and a downturn in government spending.

Fortunately for crypto traders, major tokens have mostly shrugged off this news.

The strongest movers on the day are both meme coins. Ethereum token SPX6900 (SPX) jumping 10.9% and Solana meme coin Fartcoin (FARTCOIN) dropping 7%—fairly muted moves figures for such volatile assets.

Persona 4 voice actor confirms a remake is in development, after not being cast

Persona 4 voice actor confirms a remake is in development, after not being cast

by admin May 29, 2025

A voice actor from the original Persona 4 has confirmed a rumoured remake is indeed in development.

Yuri Lowenthal, also known as the voice of Spider-Man in Insomniac’s superhero series, was the voice of Yosuke in the original release of Persona 4 back in 2008 (as well as the protagonist of Persona 3).

In a new post on social media, the actor has stated he won’t be returning for the Persona 4 remake – despite the fact Atlus itself hasn’t confirmed its existence.

P5X News -First announcement! Watch on YouTube

“And for those who keep asking, no, I will not be returning as Yosuke for the Persona 4 remake,” he wrote. “I asked. Maybe I even begged, but they don’t want me to come back.”

While Persona 5 was the game to truly give the Japanese RPG series huge success, Persona 4 was arguably the game that popularised it by building on the formula of its predecessor. In short, Persona 4 is particularly popular among fans, and the rumoured remake is highly-anticipated.

It would follow the release of Persona 3 Reload last year, which enhanced the 2006 original with elements of the more recent Persona 5. Fans have therefore expected a similar remake of the fourth game to follow suit.

Even more eagerly anticipated is the expected Persona 6, though little is known beyond a leak suggesting it’s coming to multiple platforms.

Until then, spin-off Persona 5: The Phantom X is due out next month on PC and mobile.

Naughty Dog working on second game alongside Intergalactic, Neil Druckmann confirms

by admin May 20, 2025

It feels like we’ve only just been introduced to Naughty Dog’s sci-fi action-adventure Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, but studio boss Neil Druckmann has now confirmed there’s a second game in development at the studio.

Druckmann shared the news in conversation with the Press X to Continue podcast, explaining that alongside Intergalactic – where’s he’s serving as writer and creative director – “there’s another game that’s being worked on at Naughty Dog where I am more of a producer role.”

“And I get to mentor and watch this other team, and give feedback and be, like, the executive in the room,” he continued. “I enjoy all those roles, and the fact that I jump between one to the next, it makes my job very exciting and always feeling fresh. I’m never bored.”

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet was unveiled in December.Watch on YouTube

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard multiple games are in development at Naughty Dog; the studio said it had “more than one ambitious, brand-new single player game” in the works back in 2023, when it announced the cancellation of The Last of Us Online. Druckmann’s latest statement is, however, the first confirmation since then that multiple projects are still underway.

As to what this second project might be, Druckmann offered no hints, but it’s possible it’s being helmed by Uncharted: The Lost Legacy director Shaun Escayg – who rejoined Naughty Dog back in 2021 after serving as creative director on Crystal Dynamics’ Marvel Avengers.

Druckmann has, of course, been teasing a third The Last of Us game in recent years, but he seemingly backtracked on that in March, telling fans, “Don’t bet on there being more.” For now, his main focus appears to be Intergalactic, which is currently expected to arrive in 2027. And while details on the game are currently limited, Druckmann recently named another actor who’s been cast in Intergalactic after their appearance in The Last of Us’ television show.

The Last of Us TV showrunner confirms four season plan, says “no way” to wrap things up in three

by admin May 20, 2025

Craig Mazin, the showrunner behind HBO’s acclaimed live-action TV adaptation of The Last of Us, has confirmed the team is working to a four season plan, insisting there’s “no way” the narrative can be wrapped up in three seasons.

This isn’t the first time the magic number four has been floated in regard to The Last of Us’ TV adaptation, of course. Mazin started the chatter all the way back in 2023, suggesting the show could “end up being three or five [seasons]. But four seems like a good number. Some seasons, because of the story we’re telling, will need fewer episodes and some will need more.”

Then earlier this year, HBO exec Francesca Orsi mirrored those comments, saying it was “looking like four seasons” for the adaption, but stressed HBO didn’t have “a complete or final plan”. Instead, she appeared to defer to Mazin, adding, “I wouldn’t want to confirm that, but it’s looking like this season and then two more seasons after this and we’re done.”

And now Mazin has seemingly made that official in an interview with Collider. Discussing the big Joel moment that kicked off season two, Mazin explained, “It’s so impactful. It’s such a narrative nuclear bomb that it’s hard to wander away from it. We can’t really take a break and move off to the side and do a Bill and Frank story. I’m not sure that will necessarily be true for Season 3. I think we’ll have a little more room there.”

“There’s a decent chance that Season 3 will be longer than Season 2,” he elaborated, “just because the manner of that narrative and the opportunities it affords us are a little different… but certainly, there’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season. Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That’s the most likely outcome.”

As for season two, there’s just one episode to go following this week’s sixth instalment. Opinions on the second season have been a little more mixed compared to the widely acclaimed original, with Eurogamer’s The Last of Us superfan Victoria Kennedy recently pondering if Mazin and team might have bitten off more than they can chew.
