New PlayStation 6 tech all but confirmed by Sony and AMD – and it looks like it’ll make its way into other hardware too

by admin October 9, 2025

Sony and AMD just announced three key technologies that look likely to come to the PlayStation 6 and future AMD graphics cards, with PS5 system architect Mark Cerny and AMD senior vice president Jack Huynh teaming up to deliver the news. The talk is fairly technical, but the three core features – Neural Arrays, Radiance Cores and Universal Compression – look set to make a big impact on future AMD-based hardware. The main goal is speeding up computionally-expensive ray tracing and path tracing in some novel ways, as well as reducing the cost of the upscaling and denoising techniques they rely on.

Let’s start with Neural Arrays. In short, this is a new arrangement of the dozens of Compute Units (CUs) that make up a graphics processor like that in the PS5 Pro. Normally each of these CUs work alone on a bite-sized piece of the puzzle, which makes sense for most tasks, but can be inefficient for upscaling techniques like FSR or PSSR. Neural Arrays therefore link multiple CUs together in a “smart, efficient way”, like a “single, focused AI engine”.

The benefit is that this ought to allow for bigger (and therefore higher quality) machine learning models, with less overhead and better scalability. To say it another way, it means that an upscaling algorithm like PSSR ought to run faster at a given quality level, or accomplish more in a given time frame. The same speed-up also applies to denoising algorithms, which are important for ray-traced or path-traced graphics.

Here’s the full announcement. Watch on YouTube

Huynh also promises that Neural Arrays will allow for new features, including “dedicated innovations that bring cinematic rendering to an entirely new level.”

Radiance Cores are the second new technology, and they’re firmly a hardware change. Essentially, this is a new dedicated hardware block in next-generation AMD graphics processors that’s “designed for unified light transport”, ie ray tracing and path tracing. In the PC space, Nvidia has long held a ray tracing performance advantage thanks to its RT cores, and it looks like finally AMD is adopting a similar strategy.

Just as other dedicated hardware we’ve seen appear in graphics cards over the years, such as those that deal with media encoding or AI processing, Radiance Cores accomplish their given task faster than doing the same thing on more generic hardware. This speeds up the intensive work of ray traversal – “digging through complex data structures to locate where the millions of rays being cast hit the millions of triangles in the scene geometry”.

As well as the speed-up from having dedicated hardware, this change also unburdens the CPU and the rest of the GPU – so that they can perform the things they’re best suited for, such as simulation and geometry on the CPU and shading and lighting on the GPU.

Neural Arrays link up Compute Units in the GPU into larger groups to work on upscaling or denoising more efficiently.

Radiance Cores include dedicated hardware for every part of ray traversal, speeding up processing and reducing load elsewhere in the GPU and CPU.

The final bit of tech Sony and AMD announced is called Universal Compression, and thankfully it’s a bit easier to explain. In short, it’s a system that compresses everything that goes out to GPU memory, rather than just a few data types like textures, as is currently the case on the PS5 and PS5 Pro. Again, this is along similar lines to an existing Nvidia technology, in this case Neural Texture Compression.

By adding this compression step, effective GPU memory bandwidth is much higher. That means frame-rates might increase if you’re bandwidth-limited, but more importantly it allows for higher-quality assets and reduces power consumption too. This technique has broad positive implications, but it also specifically helps make both Neural Arrays and Radiance Cores more effective.

These technologies currently exist only in simulation, according to Cerny, but clearly both parties are confident enough to detail them at this early stage. Huynh also mentions that AMD is aiming to bring the technologies to developers “across every gaming platform”, which would follow in the company’s general approach of open-sourcing its graphics innovations.

Universal Compression is a more extreme version of the Delta Color Compression used on the PS5 and PS5 Pro, which compresses all data sent to graphics memory. | Image credit: Sony

It will be fascinating to see how these technologies work when they start to be realised in real hardware, and given the Project Amethyst partnership thus far, it seems reasonable to assume that the two companies will make further announcements over the next few years as the tech gets closer to completion – and when the expected PlayStation 6 is officially announced.

Beyond the rumoured PlayStation 6, we could also see these approaches being used in a PlayStation or Windows-based gaming handheld. Power consumption and memory bandwidth limitations are key challenges for any mobile form factor, so no doubt the likes of Valve, Asus and Lenovo would be mighty interested in any significant advancements. Valve has famously said that they’re waiting for a “generational leap” to justify a Steam Deck 2, and this might just qualify.

Similarly, this is huge news for fans of AMD desktop graphics cards, which have traditionally offered great price to performance in rasterised games and plenty of VRAM, but have fallen behind Nvidia alternatives in terms of RT performance and other features. AMD could massively close the gap here, and that’s an exciting prospect.

Either way, I’m happy to see Sony and AMD share the fruits of their partnership so openly, and it’s certainly food for thought when it comes to seeing how Sony, AMD and other tech giants are looking to circumvent the rise in silicon costs that has prevented faster, cheaper models from arriving this console generation.

For the first time ever, a Call of Duty beta will include Zombies – as Survival has been confirmed for the Black Ops 7 beta

by admin September 25, 2025

Now that we’ve been acquainted with pretty much everything in multiplayer in the upcoming Black Ops 7, it’s naturally time for Zombies, the co-op, undead-clearing mode that’s been a staple of the series for years.

Treyarch has now revealed a whole lot of information about the map, challenges, Wonder Weapons, GobbleGums, the new Wonder Vehicle and more.

Much like the multiplayer blog post from earlier in the week, the Zombies blog is also very extensive, offering a deep dive into almost the entirety of the mode’s different facets. Even more Zombies gameplay will be shown off at Call of Duty: Next next week, so there’s that to look forward to there as well.

Ashes of the Damned is the big new map for Zombies, and it’s the one that will be available at the game’s launch in November. It’s made up of several areas, each of which you can unlock and explore.

It’s large enough that you’ll need a vehicle to traverse between the main locations, which is where the pickup truck comes in. You’ll have to get it working first, of course, because nothing in Zombies works when you first find it. The vehicle can be upgraded throughout the journey, and the blog post talks about “some ways” to repair it when it gets damaged.

Watch on YouTube

One of the more interesting new additions is the Necrofluid Gauntlet Wonder Weapon, which we see a glimpse of in the gameplay trailer above. Normal and armored enemies return, but Black Ops 7 is also throwing a couple of new misshapen beasts into the mix – including a mutated bear.

Even going beyond the new additions, Treyarch is making several key changes to Zombies. For one, the number of super sprinter zombies will be lower, and they won’t spawn as often. Armored zombies will no longer be able to sprint in higher rounds, and their armor can now be more easily destroyed – though they will take less damage from explosives.

Zombies in Black Ops 7 has four modes: Standard, Directed, Survival, and Cursed. Standard is the base style, offering no guidance for main and side quests. Directed – introduced with last year’s Black Ops 6 – is more streamlined and designed for players looking to experience the core story content. Directed won’t be available at launch, so you can expect it a few weeks afterwards.

BO7 brings back Survival, which offers smaller, more focused experiences that take place in wardened off areas of the Ashes of the Damned map. Survival is designed for maximum carnage, with no quests or anything except trying to stay alive as long as you can. Finally, Cursed is designed for veteran players, hiding side quests for them to uncover, which in turn unearth cursed Relics. When activated, they spawn harder challenges for everyone to face.

The biggest news out of the blog, however, has to be the fact that Survival mode will be playable in the upcoming Black Ops 7 beta. This is the first time Zombies content has been playable in a Call of Duty beta, so it’s a big deal.

Black Ops 7 arrives November 14 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The game’s beta kicks off next week, split across two stages and featuring a whole lot of content.

Larian Studio’s Tara Saunders confirmed to continue as BAFTA Games committee chair

by admin September 24, 2025

Larian Games studio head Tara Saunders is continuing as chair of the BAFTA Games committee, the arts charity has confirmed.

BAFTA confirmed the new and returning chairs and deputy chairs of its film, games, and television committees in a press release on September 24, 2025.

Alongside Saunders, Des Gayle, founder of Altered Gene, is continuing in his role as deputy chair of the BAFTA Games committee.

The committee supports BAFTA in delivering its “strategic charitable mission” and plays a vital role in the oversight and steering of the BAFTA Game Awards, including providing consultation on the awards’ rulebook.

Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz in August, Emma Baehr, BAFTA’s executive director of awards and content, referred to the committee as a “sounding board” when it comes to ensuring the award guidelines remain current and reflective of what’s happening in the industry.

Alongside Saunders and Gayle, committee members include Adele Cutting (former senior audio director at EA and head of Soundcuts), Alyx Jones (founder of Silver Script Games), Anna Mansi (director of video games and certification at BFI), Katherine Bidwell (co-founder of State of Play Games), and Charu Desodt (studio director at Interior/Night ).

“We are so grateful to our sector committee members, who are comprised of people from across the screen industries who generously volunteer their time and expertise,” said Sara Putt, chair of BAFTA.

“Our committees play a central role in ensuring BAFTA’s activities, including our world-leading awards, support and spotlight the screen industries and the talented people within them.”

Earlier this month, Luke Hebblethwaite, the head of games at BAFTA, announced on LinkedIn that he was leaving the charity after three-and-a-half years, “due to some recent internal changes,” which meant his role is “being discontinued.”

“While BAFTA’s work in games will continue, for my part it’s been a tremendous privilege to have had a role where I’ve been able to champion and advocate for the industry, to recognise and celebrate brilliant games and to support the many incredibly talented people who make them,” Hebblethwaite said in the post.

“It’s been inspiring to work with such a dedicated, hard-working and passionate team of people at BAFTA (both past and present) and I feel incredibly proud of the things we’ve achieved during my tenure.”

Firaxis writer Emma Kidwell shared on LinkedIn: “I was affected by the layoffs at Firaxis, and am open to full time writing work at your studio. I’m an incredibly adaptable writer who wrote on Civilization VII and Marvel’s Midnight Suns during my (nearly) 5 years at the studio, and I encourage you to keep an eye out for my former colleagues who were also laid off.”

While the total number of staff affected is unknown, publisher 2K gave the following statement to our friends over at RPS:

“We can confirm there was a staff reduction today at Firaxis Games, as the studio restructures and optimises its development process for adaptability, collaboration, and creativity.”

I got laid off from Firaxis today. I helped ship Marvel’s Midnight Suns DLC and Civilization VII, and would love to talk to you about mid level Producer roles.

Hollow Knight Silksong

On the eve of Silksong, ultrawide monitor support is confirmed, and the soundtrack looks to be double the size of the original

by admin September 4, 2025

Silksong comes out in less than 10 hours. By the time you read this it’ll be even less than that. Heck, if you read this tomorrow, the game will already be out. Notice how I sound like an idiot? It’s because Silksong is upon us, and I’m excited. I’d rather be playing it right now than writing this.

Every new detail on Silksong is of utmost importance: even the fact that it has ultrawide support. Silksong marketing guy Matthew Griffin confirmed as much earlier today. “For PC players, screen ratios up to 21:9 are fully supported,” he posted on X, along with some screenshots to prove it (see them below, but don’t get too excited: they’re screenshots you’ve seen before, only wider now).

Not content with allaying the fears of ultrawide zealots the world over, Griffin also retweeted an account pointing out that the Silksong soundtrack is much bigger than the original game’s, with a total of 53 tracks compared to Hollow Knight’s 26 (if you don’t count the DLC tracks). Team Cherry pointed it out in their most recent letter to backers, who also get the soundtrack at launch.

I don’t mean to suggest that the amount of songs in the Silksong soundtrack is commensurate with its size compared to its predecessor, but it does sound like this sequel will be a much bigger game. It’ll have over 200 enemies and 40 bosses, according to its most recent trailer, which is a far sight more than the original Hollow Knight at launch.

Ahead of Silksong’s imminent launch, Tyler Colp has gathered together some of the best Hollow Knight lore videos to get you up to date. Elsewhere, Sean has gathered the Silksong release time for each region.

Escape from Tarkov is coming to Steam now its full release is imminent, as confirmed by a picture of a random bloke ironing

by admin September 1, 2025

Escape from Tarkov is finally emerging from an early access period that will have lasted nearly a decade, when its full release on November 15th rolls around, and you’ll soon be able to grab it on Steam.

Yep, it’s taken yeaaaaarrrssss. Tarkov’s initial alpha release came on August 4th, 2016, just a few days before No Man’s Sky arrived for the first time, and just after a little game called Stardew Valley dropped. Think about what you were doing back then. I was a teenager, still far from the job-having husk I’ve since morphed into.

Anyway, old feeling aside, Tarkov’s Steam page looks like it’ll drop any day now, after Battlestate Games studio head Nikita Buyanov decided to tweet some things. First there was a gif of an old bloke holding a steaming iron on August 30th, which everyone took as a tease rather than an endorsement for getting the creases out of your favourite top from the FPS developerman. Said FPS developerman was also, er, rather forthright in his reply to someone who responded to that post with accusations of scamming.

Then, the next day, Buyanov dispensed with the pagentry. “Yes! The page on Steam will be available soon. All the details later,” he posted, alongside a picture of said Steam page that’d be easier to dissect if it didn’t have a great big Steam logo slapped on top of it. You know, just in case you don’t know what a Steam page looks like, or had missed him saying that’s where Tarkov’s heading.

Will existing players who want to switch to Steam have to buy it again and start from scratch? That’s what folks in Buyanov’s replies wondered, and he doesn’t look to have provided an answer. Don’t worry, I’m sure everything’ll work out ok.

If it’s been a while since you’ve escaped to Tarkov, cheaters have remained an issue in it over recent years, but it’s still on our top survival games list. Also here’s an excerpt from an article about Craig Pearson hunting down some toilet roll in it:

I stalked the corridors, cracking doors and checking rooms, closing them as I went, because I was taught to be respectful even during an apocalypse. I found piles of crap and burnt-out detritus, but no loo roll. When I discovered a body pile on the roof it was full of worthless military doodads. This is a world with more shotguns than sponge soft shitter sheets.

Here’s hoping he’s located some loo paper in the years since 2020.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sequel or DLC confirmed: it’s only “one of the stories that we want to tell”

by admin August 31, 2025

You know what, I’m going to bare all: I’ve still yet to play Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 beyond the hour or so I played at a preview event, during which I approximately deemed it “a pretty tidy slice of RPG with some cheeky QTEs on the side”, but certainly not the diamond-plated GOTY candidate described by Nic in his review. As is my rotten nature, my desire to see what all the fuss is about is proportionately lower for knowing that they’re going to make a sequel – or at least, some rather substantial-sounding DLC. Ugh, I have even more to catch up on now. Why do the gods mock me.

That’s according to creative director Guillaume Broche, following on from lead writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen’s remarks in May that “chances are good” that Expedition 33 will have some kind of successor.

“Clair Obscur is the franchise name,” said Broche to Youtuber MrMattyPlays this week, as detected by The Gamer. “Expedition 33 is one of the stories that we want to tell in this franchise. Exactly what it will look like and what the concept will be is still too soon to announce, but what is sure is that this is not the end of the Clair Obscur franchise.”

For context, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 takes place in a society that is being gradually obliterated by an all-powerful Paintress. Every year, she paints a number on her canvas, and everybody that age or older is wiped from existence. The titular expedition 33 are the latest in a series of increasingly junior warriors who set forth each year to slay the mad artiste. I don’t know any of the story’s endings, but I imagine there’s scope, at least, for some melancholy prequel stories involving expeditions 34-75.

I know far more about the kerfuffle surrounding Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s development team size than I do the plot of the game. It’s been repeatedly enshrined as evidence that smaller outfits are the magical panacea for an industry currently prone to laying thousands of people off. As Nic wrote last year, the much-quoted figure of 30 or so core developers is rather disingenuous – it ignores an external animation team, many of the musicians who worked on the killer soundtrack, and dozens of localisation, QA and voice production staff.

Geez fine, I’ll play it already. It’s not that long, right? Brisk little 30 hour campaign, yes? Nothing I need to take time off for?
