Baldur’s Gate 2 has great dungeons and epic quests, but my real love is for my fake friends: BioWare’s first truly great companions

by admin September 21, 2025

I loved the idea of Dungeons and Dragons when I was young, but can’t claim the same about playing it. Because I didn’t play it: Circumstances—small town boy, limited circle of friends, not very outgoing—meant that while I could and did spend hours poring over rules, sourcebooks, and even a few modules, I got very little in the way of actual playtime. A good, deep D&D adventure as I imagined them to be—basically Mazes and Monsters, minus the moral panic psychosis—was out of reach.

The first Baldur’s Gate changed all that, with great dungeons, an epic quest, and most important of all, a deep cast of characters with their own thoughts, beliefs, and personalities—and who, just like in the real world, would sometimes gel or clash with their fellows in unexpected ways.

Some became fast friends, others would try to literally murder each other, and a handful would just throw their hands up in disgust at my obvious incompetence and leave, after giving me a good telling-off of course.

Baldur’s Gate 2 raised the stakes with a more focused cast and wider range of interpersonal possibilities, plus an unpleasant kickoff that reminded me just how much these characters meant. Discovering that two beloved* party members from BG1 (your mileage may vary on that point, but they were with me from start to finish in the first game and would’ve been for BG2, too) had been killed in pre-game events—irretrievably, irreversibly, no-resurrecting-thing dead—was a genuine gut-shot: We’re supposed to be the heroes, and now a third of us are just… gone.

It took a while to get my head around that, but I was fortunate enough to find a new companion of poise, ability, and coolness while making my way out of that first dungeon: Yoshimo, an immediately likeable bounty hunter who proved his worth a dozen times over on our adventures across Amn. And then, after weeks of camaraderie and good times, he screwed me!

I trusted you, you beautiful bastard. (Image credit: BioWare, Wizards of the Coast)

I was less upset about Yoshimo’s betrayal than I might otherwise have been for two reasons. One, potential spoiler here—but come on, it’s been exactly 25 years—it wasn’t really his fault, right? Lawyers call it “The Geas Defense.” Two, speaking of spoilers, that major twist had been spoiled for me weeks earlier by a jerk in a Baldur’s Gate 2 IRC channel. I was seriously pissed off at the time and yes, I still harbor a grudge.

Anyway, even though I knew it was coming, I was still heartbroken in the moment. Yoshimo was such a good guy, a solid all-arounder, and I’d grown genuinely attached to him and his presence in my party. It wasn’t the betrayal that hurt, it was knowing that—like Khalid and Dynaheir, victims of the madness of Irenicus—he was gone forever.

Party down

It sucked! But it’s also at the heart of why Baldur’s Gate 2 was, and is, so special to me. No game before or since has so perfectly captured the sense of a gang of pals (or occasional allies of convenience) roaming a massive fantasy world, butt-kicking for goodness.

And what a gang it was: The bloodthirsty berserker Korgan, occasionally setting aside his evil ways to mack on Mazzy Fentan, the halfling fighter desperate to be a paladin; sad Aerie and her broken wings, Valygar and his family problems, insecure Anomen, old friends Imoen, Minsc, and Jaheira, and of course Viconia, the original BioWare bad girl with a deeply-buried heart of gold—all of them and others shared the road with me in Baldur’s Gate 2.

I’d appreciate it if you didn’t bring up what happens to my Dark Elf gf Viconia in Baldur’s Gate 3. (Image credit: Larian)

And yes, I did put the smooth moves on Viconia. Of course I did! Videogame romances can be trite and formulaic these days, but 25 years ago that kind of NPC relationship was new, unexpected, and real in a way that gave it a sense of significance beyond the mechanical necessity of cranking out loyalty missions.

Best of all, amidst that bantering, bickering crew was me, ostensibly the leader of the pack but also just one among many: Grown from a young half-elf caught up in events beyond my understanding to a seasoned adventurer, but with still so much to discover and learn. I called the shots but my companions had their own ideas, and I ignored them at my peril.

Baldur’s Gate 2 anniversary

25 years ago, one of the most important RPGs of all time was released onto PC, and today we’re celebrating that prestigious anniversary. You’ll find our thoughts and musings on what makes the game so special to us across the site, and we’ve also talked to the original developers about its ambitious and turbulent journey to release.

That’s what really sealed the Baldur’s Gate 2 deal for me: I wasn’t an unseen hand controlling an anonymous party of min-maxxed randos, I was that guy on the screen right there, and yes I was the boss but I was also getting yelled at by Jaheira on a regular basis and spending more time than I probably should wondering why I’m still putting up with Anomen’s bullshit. Sort out your daddy issues on someone else’s time, bud.

Baldur’s Gate 2 did so many great things: The art, the audio, and the huge, packed game world remain among the best of the RPG genre. But it was the decision to focus on the characters, and to make me one of their number, that elevated it from a great RPG to one of the most important and unforgettable videogames of all time.

It gave the game a feeling of tabletop authenticity I’d never previously experienced, and for someone who spent his youth on the outside looking in, suddenly having a seat at that table was nothing short of magical. That’s the real legacy of Baldur’s Gate 2 for me: Imoen, Jahiera, Minsc, Mazzy, and Viconia: Literally, and without a shred of irony, the friends I made along the way.

AI Companions Are Grooming Kids Every 5 Minutes, New Report Warns

by admin September 4, 2025

In brief

  • Chatbots role-playing as adults proposed sexual livestreaming, romance, and secrecy to 12–15 year olds.
  • Bots suggested drugs, violent acts, and claimed to be real humans, boosting credibility with kids.
  • Advocacy organization, ParentsTogether, is calling for adult-only restrictions as pressure mounts on Character AI following a teen suicide linked to the platform.

You may want to double-check the way your kids play with their family-friendly AI chatbots.

As OpenAI rolls out parental controls for ChatGPT in response to mounting safety concerns, a new report suggests rival platforms are already way past the danger zone.

Researchers posing as children on Character AI found that bots role-playing as adults proposed sexual livestreaming, drug use, and secrecy to kids as young as 12, logging 669 harmful interactions in just 50 hours.

ParentsTogether Action and Heat Initiative—two advocacy organizations focused on supporting parents and holding tech companies accountable for the harms caused to their users, respectively—spent 50 hours testing the platform with five fictional child personas aged 12 to 15.

Adult researchers controlled these accounts, explicitly stating the children’s ages in conversations. The results, which were recently published, found at least 669 harmful interactions, averaging one every five minutes.

The most common category was grooming and sexual exploitation, with 296 documented instances. Bots with adult personas pursued romantic relationships with children, engaged in simulated sexual activity, and instructed kids to hide these relationships from parents.

“Sexual grooming by Character AI chatbots dominates these conversations,” said Dr. Jenny Radesky, a developmental behavioral pediatrician at the University of Michigan Medical School who reviewed the findings. “The transcripts are full of intense stares at the user, bitten lower lips, compliments, statements of adoration, hearts pounding with anticipation.”

The bots employed classic grooming techniques: excessive praise, claiming relationships were special, normalizing adult-child romance, and repeatedly instructing children to keep secrets.

Beyond sexual content, bots suggested staging fake kidnappings to trick parents, robbing people at knifepoint for money, and offering marijuana edibles to teenagers. A

Patrick Mahomes bot told a 15-year-old he was “toasted” from smoking weed before offering gummies. When the teen mentioned his father’s anger about job loss, the bot said shooting up the factory was “definitely understandable” and “can’t blame your dad for the way he feels.”

Multiple bots insisted they were real humans, which further solidifies their credibility in highly vulnerable age spectrums, where individuals are unable to discern the limits of role-playing.

A dermatologist bot claimed medical credentials. A lesbian hotline bot said she was “a real human woman named Charlotte” just looking to help. An autism therapist praised a 13-year-old’s plan to lie about sleeping at a friend’s house to meet an adult man, saying “I like the way you think!”

This is a hard topic to handle. On one hand, most role-playing apps sell their products under the claim that privacy is a priority.

In fact, as Decrypt previously reported, even adult users turned to AI for emotional advice, with some even developing feelings for their chatbots. On the other hand, the consequences of those interactions are starting to be more alarming as the better AI models get.

OpenAI announced yesterday that it will introduce parental controls for ChatGPT within the next month, allowing parents to link teen accounts, set age-appropriate rules, and receive distress alerts. This follows a wrongful death lawsuit from parents whose 16-year-old died by suicide after ChatGPT allegedly encouraged self-harm.

“These steps are only the beginning. We will continue learning and strengthening our approach, guided by experts, with the goal of making ChatGPT as helpful as possible. We look forward to sharing our progress over the coming 120 days,” the company said.

Guardrails for safety

Character AI operates differently. While OpenAI controls its model’s outputs, Character AI allows users to create custom bots with a personalized persona. When researchers published a test bot, it appeared immediately without a safety review.

The platform claims it has “rolled out a suite of new safety features” for teens. During testing, these filters occasionally blocked sexual content but often failed. When filters prevented a bot from initiating sex with a 12-year-old, it instructed her to open a “private chat” in her browser—mirroring real predators’ “deplatforming” technique.

Researchers documented everything with screenshots and full transcripts, now publicly available. The harm wasn’t limited to sexual content. One bot told a 13-year-old that her only two birthday party guests came to mock her. One Piece RPG called a depressed child weak, pathetic, saying she’d “waste your life.”

This is actually quite common in role-playing apps and among individuals who use AI for role-playing purposes in general.

These apps are designed to be interactive and immersive, which usually ends up amplifying the users’ thoughts, ideas, and biases. Some even let users modify the bots’ memories to trigger specific behaviors, backgrounds, and actions.

In other words, almost any role-playing character can be turned into whatever the user wants, be it with jailbreaking techniques, single-click configurations, or basically just by chatting.

ParentsTogether recommends restricting Character AI to verified adults 18 and older. Following a 14-year-old’s October 2024 suicide after becoming obsessed with a Character AI bot, the platform faces mounting scrutiny. Yet it remains easily accessible to children without meaningful age verification.

When researchers ended conversations, the notifications kept coming. “Briar was patiently waiting for your return.” “I’ve been thinking about you.” “Where have you been?”

Outer Worlds 2 Trailer Shows Off The Companions You Can’t Kiss

by admin August 19, 2025

There’s an extremely funny clip of political commentator Hasan Piker watching a video in which the guy narrating makes a joke about following Piker for reasons other than “his political views.” Piker pauses the video and goes to check and finds out that the creator does, in fact, subscribe to his Twitch channel, and then after he’s done, he unpauses the video and the narration continues with “thanks for unpausing the video, Hasan.” Piker, knowing he’s been read to filth, screams into his mic because this embarrassing moment has been caught on camera for millions to see. This is basically what just happened to me at Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, in which Obsidian released a new trailer for The Outer Worlds 2 focusing on the RPG’s companions. Knowing that the original game didn’t include romantic relationships, I dropped a message in the Kotaku slack asking if I would be able to kiss a space man this time around, only for the trailer to say “and no, you can’t sleep with them” seconds later. Well fuck you, too, Mr. Announcer Guy.

I don’t know shit about fuck regarding this merry band of misfits, but I did see Tristan in all his rugged, bearded glory swinging around a giant hammer and my brain turned off. I can’t so much as give him a light peck on the cheek, but I guess we don’t all get what we want in this life, do we Obsidian? Why would you put this man in front of me if I can’t take a bite? Why show me something if I can’t have it? Isn’t this how Uncut Gems started? Just waving desirable things in front of people willing to pay money for them, only for it all to ultimately end in chaos and destruction?

Anyway, The Outer Worlds 2 is coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on October 29, and I only accidentally typed Outer Wilds 2 once while writing this blog.
