Unprecedented Video Shows Catfish Climbing Straight Up a Waterfall

by admin August 19, 2025

In the wild, catfish lead elusive lives, evading detection from scientists hoping to learn more about their lifestyles. And so, when police received reports of weird catfish clumps at the bottom of a waterfall, they immediately contacted a team of scientists to do some detective work.

After watching the fish for about 20 hours, the researchers arrived at the conclusion that these Rhyacoglanis paranensis—an orange-and-black species of bumblebee catfish common to South America—were scaling steep, vertical waterfalls as a team. A paper published August 8 in the Journal of Fish Biology records this bizarre yet remarkable moment.

“I would say it was a delightful surprise to all of us, crazy about fish, to witness all the tiny bumblebee catfishes gathering in a huge effort to climb the rocky walls—a great moment!” Manoela M. F. Marinho, study lead author and a biologist at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, told Gizmodo in an email.

The catfish started their climb after 6 p.m., gathering by the thousands at the bottom of small waterfalls. The steeper the climb, the more the fish appeared to wiggle solo; some even slithered upside down across the ceilings of crevices. More teamwork was on display near flatter rocks, where the catfish climbed on top of each other to get over the rock.

The researchers aren’t entirely sure why the fish are engaging in this behavior. Based on dissections and the timing of the sighting, they believe the catfish were likely migrating upriver to reproduce. They also didn’t appear to have eaten. But this behavior does appear to be instinctual: “They also climbed artificial objects, such as our plastic pail,” the paper reports.

The study demonstrates the value of field observations in ecology and how chasing down strange reports can lead to valuable and unexpected discoveries.

Personally, I’ve always thought catfish were cool. There’s something oddly charming about their flat, sausage-like build. And now that we know they’re good hikers? Even cooler.

Peak is a small, goofy co-op climbing game from the devs behind Another Crab’s Teasure and Content Warning

by admin June 15, 2025

It’s a crossover episode! Like the great team-ups of the past (Scooby-Doo and Batman, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Batman), Totally Accurate Battle Simulator and Content Warning developer Landfall, and Another Crab’s Treasure developer Aggro Crab have come to make Peak. As in it’s literally called Peak, not a qualitative descriptor that’s been more widely adopted into Gen-Z slang that you have to Google because you’re not a spring chicken anymore.

Peak is an aptly named game too, as it’s all about climbing mountains. This being a game made by both Landfall and Aggro Crab, this obviously comes with a certain amount of silliness. Your virtual avatar is one that I can only describe as a “little guy”, who you can apparently customise with different outfits and accessories. It’s also playable in co-op, in fact that kind of seems to be the main selling point, but you can go solo too.

our new game PEAK is a climbing game with friends where the slightest mistake can spell your doom🗻

The whole goal is to get to the top of the mountain (otherwise known as the peak of the mountain, if I need to spell it out for you), in hopes of being rescued after having crash landed on a mysterious island. There’s four biomes to wade through, and along the way you’ll have to pick up food to keep yourself going. You can get injured too, so unlike the example provided in the trailer above, you probably shouldn’t punt your med kit off the side of a cliff.

Interestingly, a majority of the game was made within a one month game jam, so you shouldn’t necessarily expect infinite content or whatever it is shareholders want these days. It just looks like a silly, goofy way to hang out with some friends for a few hours. It’s also out really soon! June 16th to be precise, so you’ve only got a couple of days to wait. You can wishlist it on Steam here.

Is Using a Stair Machine the Same as Climbing Stairs?

by admin May 30, 2025

Since the change in kinetic energy is still zero, this means that the positive change in gravitational potential energy is equal to the negative of the change in internal energy. Let’s say you have a mass of 75 kilograms (165 pounds). That means moving up 1 meter would reduce your internal energy by 735 joules. That’s called working out.

Climbing Stairs vs. a Stair Climber

Now we can go back to the original question: What does the work-energy principle say about stairs versus a stair-climbing machine? Well, we already did the physics of stair climbing. It’s the same calculation if you get on top of a 1 meter table or climb 100 stories—it’s just a different value for the height. But suppose you stay in the same place while the stairs move under you. If someone is measuring your forward motion, they’d say your speed is zero. Your height also doesn’t change, so now the work-energy equation looks like this:

This says the change in internal energy is also zero, which means you don’t burn any calories. I mean, that can’t be right … right? Then how do we fix this? I’m going to use a nice example based on this video from Steve Mould. It goes like this: Imagine you are climbing up a downward-moving escalator. Again, an observer on the ground would see you as stationary. However, we could also measure your speed from the reference frame of the escalator, and you would be moving up.

In fact, if the escalator had walls and a ceiling, you wouldn’t be able tell that you were staying in place. You wouldn’t even know the stairs are moving. Since the stairs are moving at a constant velocity (zero acceleration), this would be an inertial reference frame. In physics, any inertial reference frame is as valid as any other reference frame—the basic laws of physics remain the same. So, from the perspective of the escalator frame you are moving up and doing work. It’s the same as if you were walking up a stationary frame.

But Actually, the Stair Climber Is Harder

I said that the stair climber and climbing stairs were the same—but they are not. In fact, climbing up 100 stories is easier than the equivalent distance on a stair climber. Does that seem crazy? It is a little crazy. The reason they’re different is because the gravitational field (g) is never really constant.

Remember, we defined the gravitational potential energy as U = m x g x y? That’s not really wrong, but it is a little misleading. Actually, the gravitational potential energy for the Earth-person system would be defined as the following:
