Activision claims Call of Duty loadout ads for microtransactions were a test it published accidentally following intense community outrage

Activision has claimed advertisements for microtransactions Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Call of Duty: Warzone players were seeing on their loadouts were added by mistake, following intense community fallout.

This announcement came from the official Call of Duty Twitter account, which posted, “A UI feature test that surfaced select store content in the Loadout menus was published in the Season 04 update in error. This feature has now been removed from the live game.”

Reactions to this post aren’t exactly glowing in positivity. Twitter users expressed their disbelief in the statement, unconvinced that a feature like loadout ads were accidentally implemented, rather they were pulled down following negative feedback. One user wrote, “this some soviet era level gaslighting”.

This controversial addition at the weekend came alongside the game’s fourth season, and essentially meant that every time you swapped weapons you’d see a billboard-style poster shilling a premium skin. This, as you can imagine, went down like a lead balloon among the Call of Duty community, with one player on Reddit writing, “actively witnessing call of duty become the krusty krab”.

The Season 4 update also brought with it the returning Verdansk map to Warzone, widely believed to be the best map the game has ever had, with a variety of new additions to mix things up for older players.

At the same time, Activision continues its years-long struggle against cheaters, recently allowing players to turn off crossplay in order to help avoid cheaters, a nasty group of ne’er-do-wells Activision admits are most prominently found on PC.

Apple TV 4K is still your best bet for streaming privacy for one key reason, report claims

There is no shortage of streaming boxes or streaming sticks, but ever since the original Apple TV was unveiled, the Cupertino-based tech giant’s offering has always been decidedly premium. And beyond the easy integration with other Apple devices and the ability to live within the ecosystem, it’s also earned an accolade for being one of the best privacy-focused streaming boxes.

That is, according to a new report from the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) who spoke with Ars Technica. It all comes back to the idea of many streaming boxes integrating advertisements directly into the experience. You’ll find that on Roku as well as on Amazon Fire TV devices, which in some cases have full banner ads. It’s also common for smart TVs, from the likes of LG and Samsung, as well.

The director of the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), RJ Cross, told them, “Apple’s primary business model isn’t dependent on selling targeted ads, so it has somewhat less incentive to harvest and monetize incredible amounts of your data.” And it’s a good point, since this also limits the amount of tracking Apple might need to do on the device.

Yes, your recently watched list is available and can sync across devices, and content recommendations are also available. However, it’s not engaging ACR (or “automatic content recognition”) to track everything you’re doing on the device. This technology is primarily used to track viewing habits and what has been consumed on a TV, ultimately to build a profile. However, Apple has confirmed to Ars Technica that at this time or in the past, the streaming box has not used this technology.

That’s a big win for consumers and comes to the ultimate recommendation from PIRG that the Apple TV 4K is the best bet for privacy-conscious consumers who want a best-in-class streamer. You’ll still need to sign in with your Apple Account and agree to “Data & Privacy” terms during the setup process, but it’s less demanding than other streamers on the market.

The data that is collected, like what you or other profiles on the Apple TV 4K are watching or searching for, is done so anonymously, meaning it’s not traceable back to you or any other user on the streaming box. That data, once anonymized, can be shared with streaming services that use Apple’s APIs and offer apps. Here, additionally, you do have the ability to turn off some of the personalization and recommendation features.

When you use Siri, either through the Siri Remote that pairs with the Apple TV or another Apple device to control the Apple TV 4K, those conversations will fall under Apple’s general Siri privacy stipulations. For some requests and asks, the transcription is sent anonymized with no personal details to Apple’s servers, but it will only stick around for at most six months.

A quantum computing startup has announced plans to develop a utility-scale quantum computer with more than 1,000 logical qubits by 2031.

Nord Quantique has set an ambitious target which, if achieved, could signal a seismic shift in high-performance computing (HPC).

The company claims its machines are smaller and would offer far greater efficiency in both speed and energy consumption, thereby making traditional HPC systems obsolete.

Advancing error correction through multimode encoding

Nord Quantique uses “multimode encoding” via a technique known as the Tesseract code, and this allows each physical cavity in the system to represent more than one quantum mode, effectively increasing redundancy and resilience without adding complexity or size.

“Multimode encoding allows us to build quantum computers with excellent error correction capabilities, but without the impediment of all those physical qubits,” explained Julien Camirand Lemyre, CEO of Nord Quantique.

“Beyond their smaller and more practical size, our machines will also consume a fraction of the energy, which makes them appealing for instance to HPC centers where energy costs are top of mind.”

Nord’s machines would occupy a mere 20 square meters, making them highly suitable for data center integration.

Compared to 1,000–20,000 m² needed by competing platforms, this portability further strengthens its case.

“These smaller systems are also simpler to develop to utility-scale due to their size and lower requirements for cryogenics and control electronics,” the company added.

The implication here is significant: better error correction without scaling physical infrastructure, a central bottleneck in the quantum race.

In a technical demonstration, Nord’s system exhibited excellent stability over 32 error correction cycles with no measurable decay in quantum information.

“Their approach of encoding logical qubits in multimode Tesseract states is a very effective method of addressing error correction and I am impressed with these results,” said Yvonne Gao, Assistant Professor at the National University of Singapore.

“They are an important step forward on the industry’s journey toward utility-scale quantum computing.”

Such endorsements lend credibility, but independent validation and repeatability remain critical for long-term trust.

Nord Quantique claims its system could solve RSA-830, a representative cryptographic challenge, in just one hour using 120 kWh of energy at 1 MHz speed, slashing the energy need by 99%.

In contrast, traditional HPC systems would require approximately 280,000 kWh over nine days. Other quantum modalities, such as superconducting, photonic, cold atoms, and ion traps, fall short in either speed or efficiency.

For instance, cold atoms might consume only 20 kW, but solving the same problem would take six months.

That said, there remains a need for caution. Post-selection – used in Nord’s error correction demonstrations, required discarding 12.6% of data per round. While this helped show stability, it introduces questions about real-world consistency.

In quantum computing, the leap from laboratory breakthrough to practical deployment can be vast; thus, the claims on energy reduction and system miniaturization, though striking, need independent real-world verification.

Indie devs go viral after calling out player who claims their game is a failure

The indie game devs behind Hypercharge, a Toy Soldiers-inspired game where you play as action figures shooting each other with toy weapons, roasted someone who claimed their game is dead because it doesn’t have many players online.

Making a multiplayer-only game in 2025 is a tall order. There are so many live service games that are vying for people’s attention that it’s incredibly hard to convince people to drop the games they’re already playing and have been playing for years. Good multiplayer games getting shut down is nothing new.

This is especially true of a small dev team that doesn’t have the same sort of marketing push behind them or the ability to support a live service model robust enough to go free-to-play.

And, while Hypercharge isn’t exactly exploding in popularity in the years after release, the devs fought back against the narrative that their game is dead just because players can’t find full matches online.

Hypercharge devs push back on dead game narrative

When it comes to most live-service games out there, multiplayer is no longer accessible once servers go down. Most of the world’s most played games are on a clock that runs the risk of ending at any time if the devs decide to shut down service. That’s the reality of modern multiplayer games.

However, Hypercharge is a paid title with options to fill matches with bot opponents and play in a LAN setup. As long as the game is live on storefronts and installed on your system, it’ll be playable.

And, though it isn’t nearly as popular now as it was upon release, the devs are still proud of what they made. Someone called out Hypercharge, calling it a “failure” and claiming the devs were “lazy” and looking for a cash grab now that their game has released on PlayStation.

HyperchargeSplit screen is one of Hypercharge’s biggest selling points, bringing back couch co-op.

“Maybe there aren’t thousands of players online. But somewhere, someone’s on the couch with their kid, playing split-screen, laughing, figuring things out together, side by side. If that’s all Hypercharge ever is… that’s enough for us. Not every game is meant to be online-only.”

This tweet went viral, resulting in the dev team making a larger statement on the topic.

“We made the game we always wanted as kids. And yes, it’s cliché, but it’s true. When you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. As long as we can pay the bills, feed our families, and keep creating what we care about, then yeah, in our eyes, we’re already rich. That is what success means to us,” reads a portion of their statement.

All of Hypercharge’s cosmetics are earned in game, with their being no microtransactions

The devs claimed they didn’t go with a free-to-play model because they believe that’s not the only way to make a successful multiplayer game.

“I’m used to the comments. ‘Dead on arrival.’ ‘Free to play or not play’ Or, ‘How do you make money without some free to play business model?’ The answer is simple. You make a damn good game. Hypercharge will never bee free to play. It will never have in-game microtransactions battle passes, etc. Will we lose money doing that? Or miss out on millions of players? Maybe.

“But what we won’t lose is sleep by going against what we believe in,” the statement concludes.

Even if unintentionally, this viral saga has brought a ton of publicity to their game and has a chance of boosting player counts more than a pricy ad campaign would.

DeepSeek, a China-based artificial intelligence company, has announced an upgrade to its AI chatbot, saying it can now offer enhanced overall logic, mathematics and programming with a reduced hallucination rate.

According to DeepSeek, the upgraded model — DeepSeek-R1-0528 — has “significantly improved its depth of reasoning and inference capabilities.” The startup said the model’s overall performance is now “approaching that of leading models, such as O3 and Gemini 2.5 Pro.”

DeepSeek’s debut of its R1 chatbot in January sent shockwaves through the AI industry and further established China as an AI force. The company’s first AI model had a training cost of $6 million and similar performance to leading AI models trained on significantly larger sums of capital.

According to data from Business of Apps, DeepSeek has been downloaded 75 million times since its launch and had 38 million monthly active users (MAU) as of April. In a recent antitrust lawsuit, Google estimated that Gemini reached 350 million active users in March, while OpenAI’s ChatGPT claimed 600 million active users in the same month.

Chinese-American AI race heats up

The United States government is planning to restrict the sale of advanced chip design software to China. According to a Bloomberg report, the move seeks to limit China’s ability to advance its domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.

Semiconductors are critical for a wide range of technologies, including AI, where they serve as the hardware backbone for training and running complex models.

New China AI models, such as Tencent’s T1 and Alibaba’s Qwen3, have also emerged in the first few months of 2025, spurring the AI race along.

Tfue has shared his thoughts about why Fortnite is one of the highest skill gap games of all time, even ahead of CoD.

What’s the game with the highest skill gap in the world? It’s a contentious question where there’s really no objective answer. It’s all relative. Some may think MOBAs are hard, while others may picture fighting games or aim-intensive titles at the top of the list.

For Twitch star Turner Tenney, also known as Tfue, Fortnite is among the hardest games to play out there, as he explained on the Impaulsive podcast.

On the surface, the Battle Royale title may appeal to all ages thanks to its wide range of collabs, live events, and cartoony graphics. But Tfue has explained it’s far from easy despite how it looks.

“I think right now Fortnite is like one of the highest skill gap games of all time,” he said. He then went on to explain that if you take “some random” pro player from another game and have them hop on Fortnite, they could be just “average” due to the high skill gap.

Although Fortnite can, of course, be enjoyed casually, he described the top players in this game as “so good” that these people are “insane.” Think of those who have played Builds for years with their wild reaction times, as well as impressive aiming and decision-making skills.

Following this, he mentioned the experience of well-known streamer Stable Ronaldo, who “was a great Fortnite player back in the day,” being able to compete and play in tournaments.

Although his content has shifted, at one point, he challenged “one of the best players” in the world to a 1v1. “His opponent would start with 99 deaths, and he would start with about one life. So, all he has to do is kill him once, and this kid has to kill him a hundred times,” he explained.

In the end, he didn’t even get to kill the player once and died a hundred times. “That’s how good these new players are.”

Tfue added: “You can go into a game with one of the best players in the world, and we could give you a month, but you just wouldn’t kill them. Where, like, if you go into a Call of Duty lobby versus the best CoD player in the world, dude, you’re gonna kill them.”

Obviously, the matter is up for debate. We’d wager the likes of Scump or the Tiny Terrors would have a thing or two to say about it. If push comes to shove, let’s settle it in a good old-fashioned Rust 1v1.

Yesterday, Build A Rocket Boy – the studio helmed by Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies – showed off some gameplay from the GTA-ish, Cyberpunk-ish, FarCry map editor-ish action thriller MindsEye, which is set to let you shoot a bunch of evil AI robots. Now, BARB’s co-ceo has claimed that there’s a real life “concerted effort to trash the game and the studio” going on, involving evil bots.

Yep, he seemingly just suggested these things were the case via some responses to players on the game’s Discord server, as you’d expect an exec to casually do.

Mark Gerhard, the co-ceo in question, goes by the handle MMG in the server, and was asked during a bit of back and forth about the game with fans: “Do you think that all the people who reacted negatively were financed by someone?” He responded: “100%”

Naturally, folks were a bit taken aback by an exec at a studio seemingly suggesting negative reception for a game had been paid for in some fashion, but Gerhard went on to add: “doesn’t take much to guess who”. A user in the server was quick to comment: “a co-CEO for a studio implying another studio is paying previewers to talk negatively about your game is an absolutely wild comment to make in a public environment in any situation”, to which the exec replied: “Not wild when it’s true…..”

Fans and content creators in the server who’d expressed criticism of MindsEye or Build A Rocket Boy then started to question whether Gerhard might be talking about them, leading the co-ceo to respond to such questions being asked about a user with the handle Cyber Boi.

“Folks I never said Cyber Boi was being paid by anyone,” Gerhard wrote, “I just said that there is a concerted effort by some people that don’t want to see Leslie or Build A Rocket Boy to be successful that are making a concerted effort to trash the game and the studio. Its pretty easy to see the bots and the repeated replies to any content that we put out.”

GTA YouTuber GameRoll then asked him directly: “So just to clarify – you believe that individuals, be it content creators or otherwise, have been paid off to criticise Mindseye?” “No I never said that,” Gerhard responded, “I do KNOW that there are bot farms posting negative comments and dislikes.”

ASIC Sues Former Blockchain Global Exec Over $20M in Unpaid Customer Claims

A former director of the collapsed Australian crypto exchange ACX.io is facing civil court action over what regulators allege are serious breaches tied to the disappearance of millions in customer funds.

On Wednesday, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission announced proceedings against Liang “Allan” Guo, accusing him of misusing user funds, failing to keep proper financial records, and making misleading statements while serving as a director at Blockchain Global Ltd. 

The company, now in liquidation, operated the ACX exchange, which froze withdrawals in late 2019 and ultimately left over $20 million in claims from former customers.

The lawsuit is the culmination of a years-long investigation into one of Australia’s earliest and most damaging crypto exchange failures. 

Liquidators estimate that ACX users are owed at least $22.7 million of the company’s total debt of $58.6 million to unsecured creditors.

The regulator had previously halted Blockchain Global’s 2017 IPO bid and refused it a financial services license, citing governance concerns.

ASIC launched its formal investigation into the exchange’s collapse in January 2024. Weeks later, the Federal Court imposed interim travel restrictions on Guo. 

When those expired on August 20, he left the country on September 23 and has not returned.

Same story, different exchange

In an October 2023 report to ASIC and creditors, liquidator Andrew Yeo of Pitcher Partners found that customer funds were co-mingled with company money and redirected into related entities, as cited by ABC News.

That’s reminiscent of former global exchange FTX’s misuse of customer funds, where billions were allegedly diverted to its affiliated trading firm, Alameda Research, without user consent.

Guo told liquidators that wallet credentials for Blockchain Global’s crypto holdings, worth several million dollars, were lost when his laptop was stolen in China in 2019. 

As first reported in December 2021 by The Sydney Morning Herald, no police report was ever filed to substantiate the claim.

Blockchain Global’s other directors, Xue “Sam” Lee and Zijang “Ryan” Xu, are also under investigation by ASIC. 

In the same month the probe began, Lee was charged by U.S. authorities with allegedly running a $1.89 billion Ponzi scheme under the HyperTech umbrella, which included HyperFund and HyperVerse.

U.S. prosecutors unsealed criminal wire fraud and securities fraud charges against Lee, accusing him of promoting bogus investment platforms with false promises of crypto mining returns. 

The SEC also filed a civil complaint the same day against Lee and promoter Brenda “Bitcoin Beautee” Chunga, who later pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit securities and wire fraud.

A new report has lend further credence to last year’s claims Apple is working on game-focused iOS app that’ll integrate store, social features, achievements and more – with the company now said to be “seeking to sell gamers and developers on the idea that it’s a leader in the market.”


Word that Apple was looking to expand its gaming strategy with a dedicated iOS app first surfaced last year, when news site 9to5 Mac reported efforts were underway at the company to combine the functionality of iOS’ App Store and its long-defunct Game Center service – which previously offered a centralised place to view likes of challenges, leaderboards, and achievements before the app was removed from iOS in 2016.


And now, eight months later, Bloomberg has corroborated 9to5’s story with a similar report, saying Apple is looking to preinstall the new gaming app on iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV set-top boxes later this year. There’s also talk of a Mac version, capable of displaying games downloaded outside of the App Store. As in 9to5’s earlier report, Bloomberg – citing “people with knowledge of the matter” – says the app will serve as a launcher for games and centralise in-game achievements, leaderboards, communications, and other activities.

It’ll reportedly also feature internally produced editorial content highlighting new games available within the app, which will include those from the App Store’s game section and the company’s Apple Arcade game subscription service. Bloomberg says the app is due to launch as part of Apple’s next iOS version, iOS 19, and will be showcased during the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference on 9th June ahead of a September arrival.


Apple’s push to create a prominent games destination for iOS users does, of course, follow the EU’s mandate last year that Apple must allow sideloading and alternate marketplaces on its devices to comply with the Digital Markets Act. Since then, a number of third-party marketplaces have taken advantage of the EU’s new rules, most notably the Epic Games Store.


A new game-focused iOS app from Apple would mark another small step in the company’s slowly evolving gaming strategy, which has so far included the launch of its Apple Arcade games subscription service in 2019, new tools to help developer easily port their Mac games to iOS, and even a push to woo major publishers like Capcom and Ubisoft onto its platform in recent years – although efforts to sell full-price AAA games such as Resident Evil 7, Death Stranding, and Assassin’s Creed Mirage to iOS users have reportedly proved disappointing.


Reports of Apple’s new app come as the company announces its first video game studio acquisition. It now owns RAC7, the two-person studio responsible for Apple Arcade hit Sneaky Sasquatch – although an Apple spokesperson told Digital Trends the move was a “unique circumstance”, as it saw an opportunity to help the team grow its game further.

Switch 2 hardware appears to be officially out in the wild, but it doesn’t sound like anyone will be able to play the console early. A day-one patch is needed for it to fully work, according to someone who uploaded a brief unboxing video of the new Nintendo console to YouTube.

The video, published by a user named a2dubai, is simply titled “Nintendo switch 2 unboxing” and is less than eight seconds long. It shows an apparent Switch 2 box sitting on a table next to the existing Switch. The person opens it to reveal exactly what you’d expect: a Switch 2 screen and the corresponding Joy-Con wrapped in plastic.

Why don’t they keep the camera rolling and turn it on? “Nintendo locked the switch 2,” a2dubai claims in the comments section. “It needs update to function so I am waiting for June 5th to unlock it.” Even so, fans are already pushing the pre-launch acquirer to do a full unboxing of the new hardware. More videos might follow, though Nintendo will surely be looking for any reason it can find to keep a lid on the new hardware until it’s officially out later next week.

A big software update for the Switch 2 was previously reported by The Game Business’ Chris Dring, who listed it as one of the potential reasons why media and content creators won’t be getting much early access to the hardware to test it for pre-release reviews. Unlike with previous hardware launches, Nintendo reportedly won’t be making the Switch 2 available to many in the press until a day before launch at the earliest.

“Another person shared with me that they have a Nintendo Switch 2 as well,” gaming news and deals insider Wario64 posted on X. “I have no permission to post pics but can share that when they try to boot a Switch 1 game, a message prompts ‘Please connect to the internet and update your system.’ Needs update to boot a game.”

It’s possible the Switch 2 consoles currently sitting in storage rooms (or the middle of the aisle at Target) could require an internet connection and download before they can start playing any games. That would be bad news for fans already frustrated that Nintendo is leaning into Game Key Cards and other initiatives this console generation that place less emphasis on physical media and products that work directly out of the box without the need to connect to the Mario maker’s servers.

But it’s also possible the nature of the required update might only lock the console from being used prior to a set date and time, but let it work normally after that period even without the day-one patch. We won’t know for sure until the big day is finally here.
