ChatGPT asked to play an Atari 2600 at chess then ‘got absolutely wrecked on the beginner level’

by admin June 16, 2025

An engineer toying around with ChatGPT found OpenAI’s apparently world-leading LLM getting a little bolshy about how it would do at chess. In fact, ChatGPT itself asked Citrix engineer Robert Caruso to set it up against a basic chess program to see “how quickly” it would win: and then proceeded to get battered by an Atari 2600.

First things first: chess engines are now unquestionably superior to human players, and an off-the-shelf program like Stockfish will handily trounce the best in the world. There are also AI-based chess engines from the likes of DeepMind. And ChatGPT 4o, the latest model, may be a leader in LLMs—but it is not a chess engine.

Nevertheless, you might expect something a little more impressive than this. Talking to ChatGPT about the history of AI in chess “led to it volunteering to play Atari Chess,” said Caruso on LinkedIn. “It wanted to find out how quickly it could beat a game that only thinks 1-2 moves ahead on a 1.19 MHz CPU.”

And?

“ChatGPT got absolutely wrecked on the beginner level,” says Caruso. “Despite being given a baseline board layout to identify pieces, ChatGPT confused rooks for bishops, missed pawn forks, and repeatedly lost track of where pieces were—first blaming the Atari icons as too abstract to recognize, then faring no better even after switching to standard chess notation. It made enough blunders to get laughed out of a 3rd grade chess club.”

Video Chess is as basic as chess software comes, which is entirely a function of its era: the major challenge for the programmers was creating a working engine within 4KB (which was still double the standard 2KB for other VCS games). It essentially brute forces the best move in a given position, but lacks an overall strategy and doesn’t think ahead.

A decent human player, in other words, should have a pretty easy time conquering Video Chess. But for 90 minutes Caruso “had to stop [ChatGPT] from making awful moves and correct its board awareness multiple times per turn. It kept promising it would improve ‘if we just started over.’ Eventually, even ChatGPT knew it was beat—and conceded with its head hung low.”

ChatGPT itself asked for the game of chess against an Atari, “which it proclaimed it would easily win,” after a conversation about Stockfish and AlphaZero. The LLM was apparently “curious how quickly it could win” and, because Caruso had told it he was a weak player, “offered to teach me strategy along the way.”

The story isn’t entirely one-sided. Caruso says that when ChatGPT had an accurate sense of the board it offered him some “solid guidance” and at times was “genuinely impressive.” But at others, and this will be familiar to anyone who’s spent much time fooling around with ChatGPT, “it made absurd suggestions… or tried to move pieces that had already been captured, even during turns when it otherwise had an accurate view of the board.”

Naturally the AI evangelists will be out in force to say this is meaningless, it’s not what LLMs are designed to do, and so on. But this does raise wider questions about the technology and particularly its understanding of context (or lack thereof). “Its inability to retain a basic board state from turn to turn was very disappointing,” says Caruso. “Is that really any different from forgetting other crucial context in a conversation?”

In a nod to Atari’s once-famous marketing slogan, Caruso signs off: “Have you played Atari today? ChatGPT wishes it hadn’t.”

Amazon Restocks The New Legend Of Zelda Collector’s Edition Chess Set

by admin June 12, 2025

After selling out within hours earlier this month, Amazon has restocked the new Legend of Zelda Collector’s Chess Set. Priced at $45 and officially licensed by Nintendo, this new edition features gold and black figurines based on Hyrule’s biggest heroes and villains. We wouldn’t be surprised to see this sell out fast again.

$45

The Legend of Zelda-themed chess pits Link, Zelda, and their allies against Ganondorf and various evildoers who threaten the kingdom the Hyrule. Fittingly, Link and Ganondorf serve as the king pieces, while Zelda and Twinrova are the queens.

The main heroes of Hyrule are accompanied by four supporting characters who have appeared in numerous games, including Ocarina of Time: Navi, Impa, Darunia, and Link’s trusty steed Epona.

On the villainous side, Ganondorf is joined by the twin Gerudo witches known as Twinrova, Iron Knuckles from Zelda II, Phantoms from Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass, and series regulars Armos and Deku Scrubs.

The heroes are presented as miniature gold figurines, while the villains are the black pieces. All of the pieces have a weathered, rusty finish that looks great.

Here’s the full list of what’s included in the new Legend of Zelda Chess Set.

The Legend of Zelda Chess Set

  • Legend of Zelda Chess Board
  • 16 Hero Gold Chess Pieces
    • Link (King)
    • Zelda (Queen)
    • 2x Impa (Bishops)
    • 2x Epona (Knights)
    • 2x Darunia (Rooks)
    • 8x Navi (Pawns)
  • 16 Villain Black Chess Pieces
    • Ganondorf (King)
    • Twinrova (Queen)
    • 2x Iron Knuckles (Bishops)
    • 2x Phantoms (Knights)
    • 2x Armos (Rooks)
    • 8x Deku Scrubs (Pawns)

This isn’t the first time The Legend of Zelda has received a chess set. GameStop had an exclusive The Legend of Zelda Collector’s Edition Chess Set that routinely sells for high prices on reseller markets these days.

$35 (was $40)

Though it’s not a brand-new release, it’s worth shouting out the awesome Super Mario Chess Set. This one comes with 32 custom-sculpted and hand-painted figures depicting modern character models of Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Bowser, Bowser Jr., and more. Plus, it’s available for only $35 at Amazon and Target.

On the frontlines, the pawns are presented as gold coins for the Mushroom Kingdom side, while Bowser’s disposable units are Koopa Shells.

Here’s the full breakdown of the characters and pieces in Super Mario Chess:

Super Mario Chess Set:

  • Super Mario Chess Board
  • 16 Hero Figurines
    • Mario (King)
    • Luigi (Queen)
    • Peach (Bishop)
    • Daisy (Bishop)
    • 2x Yoshi (Knights)
    • 2x Toad (Rooks)
    • 8x Coin (Pawns)
  • 16 Villain Figurines
    • Bowser (King)
    • Bowser Jr. (Queen)
    • 2x Magikoopa (Bishops)
    • 2x Birdo (Knights)
    • 2x Goomba (Rooks)
    • 8x Green Shell (Pawns)

The Legend of Zelda Collector’s Edition Chess Set

The Op Games has also made various editions of The Legend of Zelda Monopoly over the years. Unfortunately, much like the original Zelda chess set, The Legend of Zelda Monopoly is out of print and tends to sell for high prices. At the moment, Monopoly: The Legend of Zelda Collector’s Edition is listed for $110 at Amazon via Toynk Toys (fulfilled by Amazon). The game pieces in this version are all based on iconic weapons and symbols, like Link’s shield, the Ocarina of Time, and the Triforce.

For more themed chess sets based on popular gaming and entertainment franchises, The Noble Collection has a variety of impressive options, including The Lord of the Rings Chess Set for $45. You can choose to command the armies of good with pieces led by Galadriel, Aragorn, Frodo, and Gandalf the Grey, or if you’re feeling evil, you can unleash the forces of Sauron, who is allied with Gollum, the Nazgul, and Saruman on the chessboard. In addition to the sculpted pieces, this set also comes with two branded storage bags to keep everything in.

Here’s a list of a handful of standout chess sets in The Noble Collection:

007: First Light’s Bond plays “more reckless” than Agent 47’s murder chess, and after scissoring Mads Mikkelsen before diving off a balcony, I think I get it

by admin June 9, 2025

As soon as Hitman devs IO Interactive were revealed to be making a Bond game, I was on board with it. Agent 47 and 007 have a bunch in common, at least in terms of the sneaky, shooty, or stabby stuff their jobs entail, so IO’d be putting a fresh twist on a kind of game it’s already proven great at making. There is a difference though, and having killed Le Chiffre in Hitman over the weekend, I feel like I understand it better than before.

IO exec Hakan Abrak has offered his view on how 007: First Light’s Bond will play differently to 47 in an interview with IGN, which I’m glad to see also saw him emphasise that the studio aren’t done with the Hitman series.

In addition to Bond’s humour being more British and involving less flamingo disguises than Hitman’s, Abrak described the difference in how the two games feel to play like this:

“You have definitely glimpses of IO Interactive, as you would know from Hitman games as well, but it’s more front foot. It’s less of an analytical mind, chess play, where you sit and meticulously plan. All the clockwork things in Hitman where if you do this or do this, where Bond is more impulsive, more reckless sometimes. It’s more like he’s just taking things and acting and handling it more as they arise.”

That’s all well and good to say, but the experience I had half-heartedly roleplaying as Bond while taking on Hitman’s Le Chiffre contract has helped convince me that this new 007 won’t just feel like 47 in a nice wig. I walked into reskinned Paris as the usual bald barcode boy, dressed in a sharp tux for maximum Bond vibes. Rather than getting on with the job right away, as per usual, I decided to mess around in ways I thought befitted his Bondulence.

I slowly moseyed up the red carpet, pausing in order to pretend I was hobnobbing with various dignitaries, and stopping by every unattended wine glass in order to simulate taking advantage of the free drinks. Once I was inside, I had three potential opportunities to secure an invitation to a super secret Casino Royale-ish poker game. The first one I flubbed by losing ten million government-bankrolled chips in a roulette flutter-off against a billionaire.

Surprised a bit by that failure, I decided to take things a bit slower with the other two possible invite providers. One involved killing a guy for an American agent, which is pretty Bondy. The other hinged on serving a lady a shaken, not stirred, martini, which is even more Bondy. After spending some time chilling at the bar pretending to chat up a group of NPCs who weren’t fussed in the slightest, I decided to go with the latter.

Then, a notification sprung up neatly informing me I’d missed the window for all three story opportunities to get into the poker game.

The contract didn’t fail, but I still panicked a bit, wondering if I might miss Le Chiffre entirely if I didn’t act fast. Cue a rush to the top floor by shimmying up the drain pipes, the hasty acquisition of a guard uniform, and the absent-minded pilfering of some random scissors. I watched Le Chiffre and his guests play for a bit, then the intrusive thoughts took over and I lobbed the scissors at his head, sending his body flying up into the air.

Cutting my losses rather than trying to go for the second target, I narrowly survived clambering over a balcony while surrounded by gunfire, then snuck into an evac chopper licking my wounds.

I got the kill, but under Hitman rules, being impulsive, reckless, and just making things up as I went along hadn’t exactly rewarded me too handsomely. Sure, it was definitely because I was playing like a bumbling idiot, but had I been playing First Light, where the Bondiness will be not just accepted but embraced, maybe things would have gone differently.

Are Trump and Musk Playing chess with the market? Which coin will win the game?

Trump–Musk feud shakes markets as Tesla drops, crypto hit; investors brace for fresh waves of uncertainty.

A public feud between Donald Trump and Elon Musk just rattled global markets. The two titans clashed over Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” with Musk publicly blasting the policy for threatening economic stability.

Trump, never one to back down, responded by hinting at halting government support for Musk-linked ventures like SpaceX and Tesla. Within hours, Tesla shares nosedived, and the ripple effect slammed into the crypto space, signaling more than just political drama. For investors, the message was clear: uncertainty is back, and the smart money is already repositioning.

Elon Musk vs Trump sends the crypto market falling

After Elon Musk and Donald Trump clashed online over the weekend, the entire crypto market took a heavy hit. Bitcoin fell sharply, dropping below the $101,000 mark, while Ethereum slipped by over 6%. In total, more than $170 billion was wiped from the market in just a few hours.

The sell-off was quick and brutal. Within a single day, over $950 million in long positions were liquidated. Traders were forced out of their bets as prices dropped fast, and panic spread across exchanges. It was one of the most sudden crashes seen in recent months.

Some believe it was just a healthy correction. Others think it might have been triggered on purpose. With two of the loudest voices in tech and politics, Musk and Trump, now at odds, tension is rising. Trump criticized Tesla and hinted at policy changes, while Musk fired back online. Tesla shares took a hit, and soon after, crypto followed.

Now many are asking the same question: Was this just a coincidence… or a move to reset the market and shake out weak hands?

Either way, this dip has created new chances, and sharp investors are already moving toward the next breakout.

After the drop, some investors panic – others spot opportunity

Big crashes don’t scare everyone. In fact, they often light the path for those paying attention. While most eyes are still on the feud and the market chaos, some investors are already shifting their focus toward something that’s been quietly building: a frog. Not just any frog but Pepeto.

Back when memecoins first took off, Elon Musk once changed his X profile picture to a frog, sparking wild speculation about what he was hinting at. Some now believe that move wasn’t random. Fast forward, and Elon’s name is being tied to the Trump token launch — a coin that surged, then slumped, all while his public feud with Trump heats up.

Now, enter Pepeto , a memecoin born from the same roots as Pepe, but with a story of betrayal and revival. Rumors in the crypto world say it was sidelined in the early days, only to return now with stronger tech and bigger plans.

📣 Announcement 📣 :

PEPETO EXCHANGE DEMO VERSION IS READY, SET TO BE DISPLAYED IN PEPETO OFFICIAL SOCIALS, IN LESS THAN ONE WEEK – APPLICATION FOR LISTING VIA OFFICIAL WEBSITE WILL RESUME AFTERWARDS –

Comment – $PEPETO is the God of all frogs- if you are all set up and ready… pic.twitter.com/29jey8Oqrg

More than hype, Pepeto runs on Ethereum, features zero-fee trading with PepetoSwap, and allows for fast cross-chain token transfers via its custom bridge. It’s the rare project with both narrative and infrastructure , and as whispers of a Tier 1 listing grow louder, early buyers are racing in before the price moves.

Why Pepeto is quickly becoming a top contender

• Ethereum-based with zero-fee PepetoSwap
• Cross-chain bridge for seamless trading
• Fully audited contract for user protection
• A revived meme story tied to Elon-era speculation
• Tier 1 exchange listing expected to be announced soon

Discover Pepeto before the listing goes live.

In a market that runs on stories, timing, and tools, Pepeto checks every box. It’s not just a comeback; it might be the next 100x. And this time, no one’s ignoring the frog.
