RGB lighting and PC gaming are kind of synonymous, and I for one think it’s pretty cool. Sure, it can often be a lot but I love a hot rig with some sick coloured lights pulsing away inside. Some of the first decorative lights I ever got for my machine were by the way of cooling fans, and I distinctly remember feeling a weird swelling of PC gamer pride the first time I installed them.

Case lighting has come a long way since those dark ages, and that includes fans, with Corsair bringing out its new RS-R Series fans that are built differently with lighting needs in mind.

The new RS-R Series fans are touted as being a great solution for both aesthetic lighting and functional cooling. They feature eight addressable RGB LEDs in each fan, and boast controllable PWM cooling that can up to 65.8 CFM. Both of which can be controlled straight from the software on your motherboard, which they attach to using a single 4-pin PWM connector and one +5V ARGB header.

You can also daisy chain a bunch of these to run in series, so it should be a relatively easy cabling operation to kit out a case full of these fans. This setup also means you should be able to get the full force of these windmakers without requiring any additional installations or controllers.

Corsair’s iCue Link fans are our top picks when it comes to airflow that looks good while keeping your PC cool, but these may be a step up. Not having to delve into the iCue software to get these 120mm round bois just how you like them will be a godsend.

The headline feature for these new fans, however, is their reverse rotor. This means they can be oriented within your chassis as an intake without having the fan casing obsructing the lighting and making your funky fishbowl build look too industrial. The standard design for case fans means that is you’re using one as an exhaust then from the inside of the case you will just see the fan itself, in all its RGB glory. Turn it around to bring air in, however, and the plastic struts which give the fan housing its rigidity get it in the way of the pretties.

These reverse rotor fans, then, are designed for your intakes when you’re organising the airflow of your chassis. These aren’t the first fans from Corsair to sport the reverse rotor advantage, but they are much cheaper than what was on offer before. They’re also not the only fans to offer the feature; we used Phanteks’ reverse fans when we built The Rig for the PC Gaming Show this year.

That fine control, and even the ability to run at Zero RPM for ultra quiet standby computing do make for an appealing argument. They also feature magnetic dome bearings for minimal friction, and should have a fair amount of longevity for it. Corsair seems to think so to, offering a five-year warranty on the RS-Rs, which is always great for peace of mind.

The new RS-Rs case fans come in packs of three, in both black and white frame colours to help match your case aesthetics. Naturally you can pick the LED colours when you get them installed to help do the rest. They’re available now, and look to be going for around $60 USD a pack.

Apple’s powerful Mac Mini M4 has never been cheaper

If you’ve been curious about trying out a Mac for the first time or need a small computer powerful enough to be your home media server, we strongly recommend the latest Mac Mini. Thankfully, the step-up M4 model with 512GB of storage and 16GB of RAM is on sale at Amazon and B&H Photo for $689 ($110 off), which marks its lowest price ever. The entry-level model with 256GB of storage is also on sale at Amazon and B&H Photo for $469 ($130 off) — another all-time low.

Former Verge staffer Chris Welch called the machine “a tiny wonder” in his review last year, namely because of its size reduction and power boost over previous generations. Apple managed to pack a lot into a computer that’s five inches wide and two inches tall. We reviewed the upgraded 512GB model on sale here, and it performed very well using synthetic testing software, such as Geekbench 6 and Cinebench, as well as a 4K export in Adobe’s Premiere Pro. If you work with high-resolution audio, video, or photos, Apple’s latest Mini should be able to handle your projects without a problem.

One of the Mini’s other strengths is its abundance of ports. There are three Thunderbolt 3 ports, an HDMI port, and an ethernet jack on the back, along with a pair of USB-C (USB 3) ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the front. You can use these ports to connect up to three monitors simultaneously, plug it into a TV or projector without an adapter, switch from Wi-Fi to a wired connection on your home network, or attach other common accessories. Alas, the pair of USB-A ports that have been on the Mini for over a decade are gone.

One of our only knocks against the M4 Mini was how expensive it was to upgrade its RAM and storage capacity, but this deal helps mitigate that. Also, keep in mind that the Mini is a dedicated desktop computer, which means you will need to supply your own monitor, mouse, and keyboard.

AMD stealth launches the Ryzen 5 5500X3D, a cheaper downclocked version of its oldest 3D V-Cache CPU architecture

Without the slightest fanfare, AMD has added a new “X3D” model with 3D V-Cache to its CPU lineup. Give it up, ladies and germs, for the new Ryzen 5 5500X3D (thanks to X user MEGAsizeGPU for spotting it).

It’s a six-core, 12-thread chip with 96 MB of L3 cache memory, which makes it a hardware doppelgänger for the existing Ryzen 5 5600X3D, which launched back in 2023. The difference with the new chip is all about clockspeeds.

The old 5600X3D runs 3.3 GHz base and 4.4 GHz Boost clocks. The “new” 5500X3D makes do with rounding those numbers down to 3 GHz and 4 GHz respectively.

Both chips share AMD’s first-gen 3D V-Cache tech, which stacks a slab of cache memory atop the CPU die. The idea is that the added on-package cache means the CPU cores have less need to pull data from main system memory. Accessing data from on-package cache is much faster than going out to RAM.

The real-world performance benefits of the added cache vary according to application type. Tasks like video encoding don’t see much of an uptick from adding cache. However, games can run quite a bit faster, sometimes as much as 30 to 40% faster than a comparable CPU without the 3D V-Cache, albeit the upside is usually more in the 10% range. Which is why AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D is currently our gaming CPU of choice.

Apart from the 3D V-Cache, the main appeal here is compatibility with legacy rigs running ye olde AM4 socket. Arguably, if you’re building a new rig from scratch to today, it would make more sense to go with a newer AM5 non-X3D CPU, for instance a Ryzen 5 7600X or 9600X. That way you should have more drop-in upgrade options down the road.

But if you’ve already got an AM4 rig and the time isn’t quite right to go for a full system upgrade, the new 5500X3D could be interesting. That will, of course, hinge on price to a great extent.

For now, pricing and availability isn’t clear. The Ryzen 5 5600X3D was a Microcenter exclusive and is no longer available. Right now, the closest alternative is the Ryzen 7 5700X3D, which goes for around $260.

That’s an eight-core chip with higher clocks, so the 5500X3D would probably come in around $200. For context, a Ryzen 5 9600X is currently around $180 and hits 5.4 GHz, though obviously isn’t a drop-in option for AM4 motherboards. So, we’ll have to wait and see how the 5500X3D is priced and how widely available it is.

Llano V10 Gaming Laptop Cooling Pad: review

The Llano V10 Gaming Laptop Cooling Pad is a relatively high-end option for keeping your gaming or productivity laptop cool. At $89.99 / £116.26 (around AU$140), it certainly costs a pretty penny; but in return you get a cooling pad with a giant 4.72-inch turbo fan capable of spinning at up to a ludicrous 3,500rpm.

Unlike more shy and retiring options, the Llano V10 isn’t scared to announce its presence – in fact, it’s a little bit of a loudmouth. To benchmark this laptop cooling pad, I ran a 3DMark stress test on our Acer Predator Helios 300 testing laptop with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 GPU testing laptop, while running the Llano V10 at max power for 15 minutes. Using a sound level meter, I measured the noise it was kicking out 10 minutes into the test; it registered 69dB from a few inches away, and 57.5dB at my head height. This makes the Llano the second-noisiest cooling pad I’ve tested, right after the Llano RGB Laptop Cooling Pad, which clocked 79dB and 64dB respectively.

But the one thing you can count on from this little blowhard is that it blows – hard. I measured our gaming laptop’s peak temperature before benchmarking, and again at the conclusion of the 15-minute stress test. With the Llano running at max, its temperature rose from 81.5ºF (27.5ºC) to 103ºF (39.5ºC), a rise of just 21.5ºF (12ºC). This performance is right up there with the best cooling pads, with the only one I’ve tested that could beat it being the Llano RGB Laptop Cooling Pad. So, you’re getting pretty icy cooling here.

Having launched on May 17, 2024, the Llano V10 Gaming Laptop Cooling Pad is available now. It can be purchased from Amazon at a list price of $89.99 / £116.26 (around AU$140). While that’s at the higher end of the market, it’s still its lowest ever price in the UK, and only a few dollars off the $87.99 it briefly dropped down to in May 2025. As such, it represents a decent deal.

Unfortunately, though, the fact that this is a premium product means it has quite a few rivals nipping at its heels. From one end of the market, the budget-priced $19.99 / £20.99 / AU$66.91 Liangstar Laptop Cooling Pad offered disproportionately frosty cooling for its mild price, seeing our test laptop rise by 27.5ºF (15.3ºC). Conversely, if you catch it on sale then you can pick up the Llano RGB Laptop Cooling Pad from as little as $95.99 / £129.99 – it stopped our testing rig from warming any more than 14.5ºF (8ºC), which is a substantial performance boost for comparatively little extra spend.

How I tested the Llano V10 Gaming Laptop Cooling Pad

Tested over the course of multiple days
Measured its cooling while running a stress test on our testing laptop
Recorded the combined volume of the cooling pad and laptop’s fans

I tested the Llano V10 Gaming Laptop Cooling Pad over the course of several days, using the standard TechRadar testing process I designed. First, I recorded the baseline temperature of our Acer Predator Helios 300 with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 testing laptop using a thermal camera. Then I ran a 3DMark stress test on the laptop for 15 minutes while setting the cooling pad to its highest setting, recording the laptop’s temperature again at the end of the test to measure the impact the cooling pad had on the laptop’s warming.

In addition, I measured the peak volume of the laptop and cooling pad to assess how much noise they kicked out. When the stress test had been in progress for 10 minutes, I checked the volume of the combined fan noise using a sound level meter, both from a few inches away and at my head height (21 inches from the surface of the laptop).

I also tested how the Llano V10 Gaming Laptop Cooling Pad felt in use, while working and playing games, to assess its overall build quality and ergonomics. In terms of additional experience, I’ve been using a gaming laptop and using creative workflows for decades, meaning I’m very familiar with the struggle of keeping a laptop cool.

That rage-inducing Borderlands 4 price tweet hasn’t stopped Randy Pitchford posting, as he declares an indie game is “cheaper than a point of meth”

Yep, this is a thing the Gearbox exec has tweeted. He’s posted that indie shooter Mycopunk is “cheaper than a point of meth” and “probably has fewer side effects, too”, in response to publisher Devolver Digital making a joke about Borderlands 4 potentially costing $80.

We all through the exec accidentally revealing B4’s revised release date ahead of schedule by goofing up with timezones when tweeting about it was him at the peak of his posting powers. It wasn’t. Randy’s still evolving, and he has things to say.

There’s some context to this latest ‘you what?’-inducing post from Pitchford, and it involves more ill-concieved tweets. On May 14, the Gearbox CEO responded to a fan concerned about the latest entry in the Borderlands possibly setting players back $80.

“A) Not my call. B) If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen,” the exec replied, “My local game store had Starflight for Sega Genesis for $80 in 1991 when I was just out of high school working minimum wage at an ice cream parlor in Pismo Beach and I found a way to make it happen.”

As you’d expect, that post’s drawn him lots of flak from regular folks who don’t like having it insinuated that you’re not a “real fan” if you aren’t able to buy an $80 game while also keeping your head above water during the cost of living crisis we’re all living through.

One of the responses has come from Devolver, which joked: “You’re gonna be able to buy Mycopunk for you and three of your friends for the price of one copy of Borderlands 4.” Pitchford responded to that light ribbing that mainly serves to promo developer Pigeons at Play’s upcoming co-op shooter by posting: “Mycopunk is cheaper than a point of meth – probably has fewer side effects, too!”

Yeah, imagine if your boss – who’s already made your work life harder by running his mouth – posted that.

That’s not been it either, Pitchford’s also issued what very much looks like a response to the “real fan” backlash by sharing a clip of him talking about Borderlands 4’s still unrevealed price at a recent PAX East panel, reasoning that it’s “the truth” for those who want it.

It’s three minutes long, and basically sees him admit that he doesn’t know how much the game’ll cost, before going through the factors that could influence how much games cost these days – game sellers having to be aware that some folks they’ll want to sell to are in “price-sensitive” situations, while others are “accepting the reality that game budgets are increasing, and there are tariffs for the retail packaging, and it’s getting gnarly out there”.

“We want people to buy [the game], so we have the resources to make more,” Pitchford said, “but we want everyone who buys and plays a Gearbox game to feel certain that they got the better end of the bargain. Whatever the price is, that they got the best value.” Why didn’t he just say that in the first tweet? Beats me.
