BTC News: Hard Fork Chatter Disputed

by admin September 27, 2025

Debates over Bitcoin’s future are nothing new, but this week the discussion took on a sharper edge. One of Bitcoin’s long-serving developers was at the center of a storm about immutability, censorship and what it means to “save” the protocol.

The controversy escalated on Sept. 25, following an article published by The Rage claiming to reveal that Luke Dashjr, maintainer of the Bitcoin Knots software, advocates a hard fork that would install a trusted multisig committee with power to retroactively alter the blockchain, review transactions and remove illicit content.

A blockchain hard fork is a permanent divergence from the previous version of the blockchain software, requiring all participants to upgrade to the new protocol because the new and old versions are incompatible.

The piece cited purported leaked text messages in which Dashjr allegedly warned: “Either Bitcoin dies or we have to trust someone.”

The story spread across X, drawing hundreds of thousands of views and intensifying a long-running philosophical rift: should Bitcoin remain a neutral settlement layer, or should developers actively filter what counts as legitimate use of the network?

Dashjr rejected the claims outright. “The truth is I have not proposed a hardfork or anything of the sort, and these bad actors are just grasping at straws to slander me and try to undermine my efforts to save Bitcoin again,” he wrote.

The Rage responded with a meme to the effect of demanding to know who sent the leaked messages that its story shared.

Dashjr repeated his position multiple times over the following 24 hours. “Nope, nothing changed. Nobody is calling for a hard fork still.” he posted. In another reply, he underlined: “There is no hard fork.”

The Knots vs. Core Divide

Behind the dispute lies a deeper divide between Dashjr’s Bitcoin Knots project and the broader Bitcoin Core software used by most of the network.

Knots enforces tighter transaction policies, including blocking non-financial data such as Ordinals inscriptions and Runes tokens. Dashjr and his supporters argue such measures protect Bitcoin’s monetary integrity and safeguard it from regulatory risks. Core developers have historically taken a more permissive approach, tolerating non-standard data as long as it does not break consensus.

The alleged hard fork proposal cut to the heart of that tension. For Dashjr’s critics, it seemed to confirm fears that his vision requires compromising Bitcoin’s principle of immutability. For his defenders, the leak was an opportunistic smear designed to derail the case for stronger spam filters.

Among his defenders was Udi Wertheimer, co-founder of Taproot Wizards, a Bitcoin Ordinals project, so one which most would assume embodies everyting to which Dashjr is opposed.

“Not a Luke fan but this is a hit piece and fake news. He is not proposing this,” Wertheimer posted on X, referring to the supposed hard fork plan.

“I’m (obviously) not on Luke’s side but…this is just a sloppy low quality propaganda piece,” he wrote.

Wertheimer concluded that what Dasjhr’s leaked messages were a hypothetical discussion about using zero-knowledge proofs to allowing Knots nodes to avoid downloading “spam.”

“This is, as always, a nothing burger,” he concluded. “It’s pretty obvious to me that this proposal never gets implemented, and even if it did, it does not censor the network and does not split the network, and remains fully compatible with core.”

It’s worth noting that over the past 24 hours, BTC$109,485.29 slipped 2.2% to trade at around $109,000, a drop of over 5.5% in the last week.

While there’s no direct evidence linking this dip to the controversy over Dashjr’s alleged plans, the timing is hardly helpful. In crypto markets, uncertainty alone can amplify downward pressure and rumors of protocol upheaval tend to stoke exactly that.

Shiba Inu price eyes bounce amid ETF chatter, Fed’s rate cut

by admin September 17, 2025

Shiba Inu continues to struggle with downside pressure but appears bullishly positioned amid fresh chatter around a potential exchange-traded fund and the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision.

Summary

  • Shiba Inu price hovered around $0.00001306 as bulls attempted to mirror gains across crypto.
  • Excitement around exchange-traded funds and Fed’s rate cut could be key catalysts.

Price is also above the level seen during that dip to a low of $0.00001170 last week. However, a 12% decrease in trading volume to $177 million suggests indecisiveness for bulls and bears.

Shiba Inu poised above $0.000013

After a volatile swing to lows of $0.00001295, Shiba Inu (SHIB) has posted a slight bounce as top memecoins target a potential recovery. SHIB traded near $0.00001306 at the time of writing. The memecoin’s price is back at levels where bulls have consolidated support over the past month.

Notable for Shiba Inu is that its recent price dip followed the security breach that impacted Shibarium.

The hack saw SHIB retreat to key levels, dropping out of the top 20 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, currently at $7.69 billion. But with exchange-traded fund anticipation driving sentiment for Dogecoin (DOGE), analysts say a similar expectation may catalyze SHIB’s price gains in the coming weeks.

“With a multi-billion dollar market cap, global exchange listings, and one of the largest retail communities in crypto, SHIB already meets some of the same criteria that made Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF-ready,” the Shibarium team recently wrote.

“An ETF could expose SHIB to a new class of investors who prefer traditional financial products, bringing more attention (and legitimacy) to the token,” they added.

SHIB price outlook as Fed cuts interest rates

As with other cryptocurrencies and tokens, the overall outlook for Shiba Inu is bullish as the highly anticipated Federal Reserve interest-rate cut arrives.

Markets have been upbeat for several weeks after Fed Chair Jerome Powell hinted that the U.S. central bank would cut interest rates this September. On Sept. 17, after a two-day Federal Open Market Committee meeting, the Fed announced a 25-basis-point interest-rate cut.

Stocks were mixed as the market reacted to the 25bps rate cut, which was already priced in and suggests investors wanted more.

Bitcoin (BTC), which showed signs of spiking ahead of the Fed meeting, gained slightly as it edged above $116,000. Shiba Inu’s price will follow the overall crypto market movement, with bulls’ advances beyond $0.000013 including short-term targets of $0.00001475.

Gemini Overtakes Coinbase on App Store Amid IPO Chatter

by admin August 26, 2025

American cryptocurrency exchange Gemini has surpassed Coinbase on Apple’s App Store’s financial application charts in the U.S. The development comes hours after it launched an XRP edition of the Gemini Credit Card and ongoing chatter around the exchange’s upcoming initial public offering (ICO).

The Gemini credit card has been launched in partnership with Mastercard and Ripple Labs. Gemini released a statement on X on the launch of the card. “This limited edition metal card gives up to 4% back in XRP instantly. No waiting, just stacking,” the announcement read.

This move pushed Gemini to surpass Coinbase in the US finance category rankings, placing 11th while Coinbase ranked 20th, according to Sensor Tower.

Coinbase Continues Leading in Trading Volume

Interestingly, Coinbase has more than thrice the daily trading volume of Gemini. According to CoinMarketCap, Coinbase ranks third among crypto exchanges by trading volume, recording $4.54 billion in the past 24 hours, while Gemini sits at 24th with $382.49 million. Gemini also filed for the initial public offering (IPO) on August 16 on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol GEMI.

Public Keys: Ethereum Treasuries Soar, Bitcoin ETFs’ $1 Billion Bleed, Crypto IPO Chatter

by admin August 22, 2025

In brief

  • Crypto stocks surged on Fed Chair Powell’s dovish Jackson Hole speech hinting at September rate cuts, with Ethereum treasury companies and Bitcoin miners leading gains of 8-15%.
  • Bitcoin ETFs bled $1 billion over five consecutive days while Ethereum ETFs rebounded with $288 million in net inflows on Thursday.
  • Blockchain lender Figure Technologies filed for an IPO, seeking to go public after processing over $16 billion in home loans on its Provenance blockchain.

Public Keys is a weekly roundup from Decrypt that tracks the key publicly traded crypto companies.

Wings of a Dove

Crypto stocks (and the rest of the crypto and stock market) are soaring thanks to a big boost from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s dovish speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium on Friday morning.

Crypto and stocks tend to get a boost when the Fed lowers rates because it triggers a rotation of funds from treasury bonds and into risk-on assets.

During his remarks, Powell said the “shifting balance of risks may warrant adjusting our policy stance.” In other words, he opened the possibility for a rate cut when the Federal Open Markets Committee meets again in September.

Crypto exchange Coinbase’s shares gained about 6% and Bitcoin hoarding behemoth Strategy rose 5% on the day—a nice reversal from earlier in the week.

But it’s Bitcoin miners and Ethereum treasury companies that won the day. The two largest Ethereum treasuries—former Bitcoin miner BitMine Immersion and online gambling marketer SharpLink—  gained 12% and 15.6%, respectively.

Bitcoin mining rig manufacturer Canaan’s stock gained 12%, and Bitcoin miners Riot Platforms and Iris Energy picked up 7.7% and 9.3%, respectively.

Katalin Tishhauser, head of research at Sygnum Bank, noted that while crypto markets had a “swift and positive” reaction to the news, she flagged that the underpinning economic data still shows signs of trouble.

“Even if a September cut does not materialize, the market has proven resilient in digesting past disappointments while still setting new highs. Momentum may continue, albeit with higher volatility,” she told Decrypt. “Meanwhile, spiralling debt and rising inflation remain unresolved structural issues—factors that strengthen the case for safe-haven assets over the longer term.”

$1 Billion Bleed

Bitcoin ETFs just spent five days in the red and shed $1 billion—even as their Ethereum counterparts staged a turnaround. On Thursday, Ethereum funds stopped the bleed and pulled in $288 million worth of net deposits.

The dominance of Ethereum in the current market narrative is very much warranted, according to the latest note from M31 Capital.

The private equity and venture capital fund pointed out that infrastructure, DeFi, L1 and L2 networks, and Web3 companies were all in the green—and all came out ahead of Bitcoin.

But nothing short of another all-time high for BTC was going to top last week’s record-setting run to $124,128.

Figure on the runway

Just as Bullish makes its $1.15 billion debut, there’s a new crypto company ready to test its wings.

Blockchain lender Figure Technologies has filed  paperwork for an initial public offering.

Now, it’s important to make a distinction about what Figure does given the history of crypto lenders in the space: Figure uses its platform to enable lending outside the traditional scope of the crypto industry, such as real estate.

The company says that its the largest non-bank provider of home equity lines of credit in the U.S. and that its software has been used for more than $16 billion worth of home loans.

Illia Otychenko, the lead analyst at CEX.IO, told Decrypt earlier this week that the company “dominates the tokenized private credit space, with more than 70% market share and over $11 billion in active loans on its Provenance blockchain.”

Figure is co-founded by SoFi co-founder and former CEO Mike Cagney, who left the bank in 2017 amid sexual harassment allegations. The IPO would mark his return to leading a publicly traded company.

“The IPO is one step in a long process to bring blockchain to all aspects of capital markets,” he said in the company’s SEC filing. No word yet on share pricing, though.

Other Keys

Timber: Nasdaq has delisted drug developer Windtree Therapeutics, which announced last month that it would buy $700 million worth of Binance’s BNB token. The company said in an SEC filing that its shares stopped trading on the Nasdaq for failing to maintain the $1-per-share minimum bid price required by the exchange.

USA Made: Bitcoin miner Bitdeer confirmed it’s going to begin manufacturing mining rigs in the U.S. this year. That news came as two of its competitors—Iris Energy and CleanSpark—have been hit with letters from U.S. customs asking for millions in tariffs on Chinese-manufactured rigs purchased in 2024.
