Chase Elliott wins overtime sprint to advance in NASCAR playoffs

by admin September 29, 2025

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Chase Elliott somehow stole Sunday’s race at Kansas Speedway, where he drove from eighth to the checkered flag during a two-lap overtime sprint to earn a spot in the third round of NASCAR’s playoffs.

It was a wild ending to a race that probably should have been won by Denny Hamlin, who dominated and led 159 laps until a bevy of late issues denied him his chance at career win No. 60 for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Editor’s Picks

The race had a slew of late cautions — Hamlin dropped from the lead to seventh on a slow pit stop — that put Bubba Wallace in position to win the race. A red-flag stoppage for Zane Smith flipping his car set up the final overtime restart and Wallace was holding tight in a door-to-door battle with Christopher Bell for the victory.

Then Hamlin came from nowhere to catch Wallace, who drives for the team Hamlin co-owns with Michael Jordan, and Wallace scraped the wall as he tried to hold off his boss. That’s when Elliott suddenly entered the frame and smashed Hamlin in the door to get past him for his second win of the season.

“What a crazy finish. Hope you all enjoyed that. I certainly did,” NASCAR’s most popular driver told the crowd after collecting the checkered flag.

Elliott joins Ryan Blaney as the two drivers locked into the third round of the playoffs. The field will be cut from 12 drivers to eight after next week’s race in Concord, North Carolina and Elliott said once he got in position for the victory, he wasn’t giving up.

“I wasn’t going to lift, so I didn’t know what was going to happen. I figured at the end of the day, it was what it was at that point,” Elliott said. “Wherever I ended up, I ended up. At that point, we were all committed. Really cool just to be eighth on the restart and somehow win on a green-and-white checkered. Pretty neat.”

Hamlin finished second and was clearly dejected by the defeat. The three-time Daytona 500 winner is considered the greatest driver to never win a Cup title and needed the victory to lock up his spot in the next round of the playoffs. He also has a 60th Cup win set as a major career goal and is stuck on 59 victories.

He drove the final 50-plus laps with his power steering on the fritz.

“Just super disappointing. I wanted it bad. It would have been 60 for me,” Hamlin said. “Obviously got really, really tight with [Wallace], and it just got real tight and we let [Elliott] win.

“Man, I wanted it for my dad. I wanted it for everybody. Just wanted it a little too hard.”

Hamlin was followed his JGR teammates Bell and Chase Briscoe, who were third and fourth.

Wallace wound up fifth and even though the victory would have moved him deeper into the playoffs than he’s ever been in his career, he was satisfied considering how poorly his car was running earlier in the race. He wasn’t even upset with Hamlin, and he shook hands with his boss on pit road.

“To even have a shot at the win with the way we started … you could have fooled me. We were not good,” Wallace said. “Two years ago I’d probably say something dumb [about Hamlin]. He’s a dumbass for that move. I don’t care if he’s my boss or not. But we’re going for the win. I hate that we gave it to Chevrolet there.”

Elliott, in a Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, was the only non-Toyota driver in the top five.

Next up is a playoff elimination race at the hybrid oval/road course at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where Kyle Larson won a year ago. The playoff field will be cut from 12 drivers to eight following next Sunday’s race.

The four drivers in danger of playoff elimination headed into that race are Ross Chastain, Austin Cindric, Reddick and Wallace.

“Obviously there’s only one thing we can do at Charlotte (win), and that’s what we’ll be focused on,” Reddick said.

Retail Stores May Soon Use Drones to Chase Thieves

by admin September 26, 2025

As if we weren’t already tracked enough, malls and stores across the U.S. might soon deploy drones to catch shoplifters.

Controversial surveillance company Flock Safety, which supplies drones and other invasive tech to police departments, announced on Thursday that it is now offering its drones to private security firms.

Drone use in policing is on the rise, and this move makes it likely that private companies will soon adopt the same tech. But as drones become normalized for public and private security, privacy advocates warn they could push the U.S. closer to a surveillance state.

“Security leaders are being asked to protect more with less across bigger footprints, tighter budgets, and real staffing constraints,” Rahul Sidhu, Flock Safety’s VP of Aviation, said in a press release.

The company says each drone dock can cover roughly a 3.5-mile radius with flight times up to 45 minutes, providing rapid response for warehouses, rail yards, hospitals, ports, malls, and business centers.

In its press release, Flock Safety pitched its drones specifically to retail stores, arguing that organized retail crime remains high. It cited an industry report showing that retailers saw a 93% increase in shoplifting incidents in 2024, and said the drones’ quick response could help reduce related costs over time. Of course, it’s worth noting that retailers’ claims of a shoplifting epidemic were largely debunked in 2024, but that didn’t stop police departments from going on a shopping spree for new toys.

Keith Kauffman, Flock’s drone program director, told the MIT Technology Review how the drones could work in practice.

When a store’s security team spots shoplifters leaving the scene, they can activate the drone, which is docked on the roof. Equipped with video and thermal cameras, the drone can track thieves escaping on foot or in a vehicle. Its video feed can then be sent to the company’s security team and transmitted directly to local police.

Flock’s technology is already in use in many police departments. Just this week, its license plate cameras were credited with catching a murder suspect in El Paso and locating a missing teen in Boulder, Colorado.

But not everyone is thrilled with the company’s tech. The city of Evanston, Illinois, ordered Flock Safety this week to uninstall 18 license plate readers after Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias discovered that Flock had given U.S. Customs and Border Protection access to the readers’ data. And in August, Congress launched an investigation into what one member called Flock’s “role in enabling invasive surveillance practices that threaten the privacy, safety, and civil liberties of women, immigrants, and other vulnerable Americans.”

ACLU Senior Policy Analyst Jay Stanley has warned in recent years that the expanding use of drones in policing and private security requires strict privacy guardrails, including limits on when and where drones can be used and how video and other sensor data are handled.

“We don’t want to end up in a nightmare scenario where drones are used for mass surveillance and the experience of having police flying cameras buzzing overhead becomes routine in people’s daily lives,” Stanley wrote in a recent blog post.

Exclusive: Funko Launching Classic Mega Man Funko Fusion Figure With Chase Variant Version

by admin August 24, 2025

Funko Fusion didn’t set the world on fire when it released last year, but at least it’s giving us some cool Funko collectibles. We’ve already seen figures based on Battlestar Galactica, Shaun of the Dead, and The Thing, and soon we can add Mega Man to that list. The Mega Man Funko Fusion figure is now available to preorder for $15 ahead of its December 27 release date. The figure will come in a standard version that captures the hero’s original blue design, and a rare Chase variant that gives the character a zombified makeover. Alongside the Blue Bomber, Funko also announced Funko Fusion figures based on Colonel Sanders, Invincible, and Five Nights at Freddy’s.

$15 | Releases December 27

This new Mega Man Funko Fusion vinyl figure features Capcom’s retro icon in his classic blue armor and helmet, with a blue energy blast firing from his arm cannon. Like all Funko Pops, this one does not have any articulated joints, but it should make for a fun addition to your game room or home office. If you’re lucky, you might land the Chase variant of the Mega Man Funko Fusion, which “zombifies” the character, turning his eyes white, his skin pale, and adding flecks of green goo across his armor. Like all Chase variants, there’s about a 1/6 chance to find it.

Mega Man Funko Fusion Standard and Chase Variants

The vinyl is arriving alongside the Funko Fusion: Deluxe Edition video game, which adds several new, exclusive characters to the game. Our Funko Fusion review gave it a 4/10, though folks looking for a quirky cooperative game with constant references to pop culture icons will probably find something to enjoy about the adventure. The main reason to pick up this new $40 Deluxe Edition is for all the new playable characters from several popular movies and TV shows. Here’s a look at the new characters in the Deluxe Edition:

  • Wicked: The Wizard, Madame Morrible, Elphaba, Glinda, Prince Fiyero, and Shiz variants of Elphaba and Glinda
  • Universal Monsters: Dracula, Bride of Frankenstein, Invisible Man, Wolf Man
  • The Office: Michael, Dwight, Jim, Pam

The Funko Fusion standard edition is also available for $20 on PS5, PS4, Switch, and Xbox Series X. While the base version lacks the additional content and characters from the new Deluxe Edition, it does include Mega Man in its playable roster.

Funko Fusion Colonel Sanders, Freddy Fazbear, and Invincible features

As mentioned above, Mega Man is just one of several new Funko Fusion figures launching in December. You can preorder new vinyl collectibles based on KFC mascot Colonel Sanders–wielding a chicken-launching cannon, no less–that also comes in an all-gold Chase variant. He drops on December 9, alongside a new Invincible figure that has a blood-spattered chase variant. Following those two, a new Funko Fusion Freddy Fazbear wielding a pizza launcher drops on December 27 with a zombified Chase variant. Preorders for all these new figures are available for $15 apiece at Amazon.

There are several other figures available in the lineup that are available now, including classic heroes like He-Man, or villains like the Cylon robots from Battlestar Galactica. Fans of the Cornetto Film Trilogy can add Shaun from Shaun of the Dead or Nicholas Angel from Hot Fuzz to their shelves, while fans of creatures and monster movies can pick up the mutant Indominus Rex dinosaur or the grotesque monster from The Thing.
