Crypto Traders Profit From Charlie Kirk Murder as Debate Swirls Over Ethical Lines

by admin September 11, 2025

In brief

  • Crypto traders bought and sold a handful of Charlie Kirk meme coins after the conservative influencer was assassinated on Wednesday, generating millions.
  • The token creators and top five traders collectively profited more than $2 million, prompting meme coin traders to question whether an ethical line had been crossed.
  • Some believe profiting off death is too far, while others argue it’s unavoidable in crypto-based free markets.

Meme coin creators and traders profited more than $2 million following the assassination of right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk on Wednesday. It has split the meme coin-frenzied segment of the crypto community, with one side calling those gaining from his death “sickening” while others shrug at the long line of morally questionable tokens traders have capitalized on.

In the wake of the fatal shooting of prominent conservative activist Kirk, four meme coins were created and soared to multi-millions, with the largest peaking at a $36 million market cap. The deployers of these tokens netted more than $563,000 in rewards—royalties paid to the creators of the tokens—in less than 24 hours, according to data from Solana meme coin launchpad Pump.fun. The top five traders of each token have realized profits over $1.6 million, according to DEX Screener.

As trading for the tokens accelerated on Wednesday night, social media was set ablaze with people searching for and identifying those profiting from the death of the President Trump ally.

Some even suggested that the token launchpad Pump.fun should add filters that prevent the creation of coins that profit from shootings and violence. Pump.fun does have terms of use, a prohibited use policy, and an active moderation team, but such tokens do not violate any of its guidelines. Pump.fun did not immediately respond to Decrypt’s request for comment.

Pump.fun appears to have benefited from the frenzy too. PumpSwap, the decentralized exchange where its tokens trade, saw a significant spike in daily volume to $533 million—a three-month high. The platform, though, did not experience a notable increase in the number of tokens launched or revenue generated, according to data available on Dune.

“I think profiting off someone’s death, especially the magnitude of an event like this, is sickening,” Pump.fun livestreamer Jytol told Decrypt. “Personally, I don’t trade memes which involve death, racism, or bullying.”

“Anything is fair game”

A prominent pseudonymous meme coin trader, 0xWinged, called such critiques “virtue signalling,” suggesting the community is now drawing an arbitrary line that hasn’t been well-defined in the past. 0xWinged explained that he is both sad about Kirk’s death and would have traded the tokens—but was “sidelined sadly.”

“If it’s not me, it’s someone else making money. Meme coins are about reach and publicity. Kirk was the most viral event,” 0xWinged told Decrypt. “I think Crypto Twitter, having moderate right political views, saw Charlie not as a random victim but as a martyr for a greater cause. And the tokenizing of this event reduced his real-world achievements to a market cap.”

He added that he doesn’t think those profiting off the tokens have “any ill intent,” explaining that “anything is fair game” when it comes to meme coin trading. He also admitted there’s something “dystopian” about that.

Others think that dystopian feeling crosses a line. Loopify, a pseudonymous game developer and founder of charity CryptoGaza, compared the trend to investing in war stocks, which he believes exists “below the moral line.”

“My opinion: anyone who makes money off coins like that, you’re the problem with crypto,” pseudonymous meme coin trader WombatAF told Decrypt. “Death isn’t funny, memes should be funny, or a joke. Something you can just get over. Not death and crime.”

CT is full of the most hypocritical, racist, scummy people with no morals

But buying a Charlie Kirk coin is where they draw the line🤣🤣

Crypto degens and profiteering

This is, of course, not the first time that crypto degens have profited from tragic events or ethically questionable spectacles—though the Charlie Kirk coins have sparked notably more outrage among meme coin traders.

Last year, meme coin traders pumped tokens based on unfounded rumors that Joe Biden had died… he hadn’t. This year, degens pumped a token called Swasticoin as they parroted antisemitic and Nazi ideologies. And, over the past seven days, traders profited from meme coins referencing the murder of Iryna Zarutska in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Solana token Justice for Iryna hit a $33.8 million market cap with the top five traders profiting $661,700 on the token. The deployer has earned $190,920 in creator fees, but appears to have donated part of this to a GoFundMe for Zarutska’s family. Equally, a token calling for the death penalty for the alleged killer pumped to $40 million, with the top five traders profiting $506,000 from it.

“There is a 9/11 token out right now [and] no one is mentioning it,” Pump.fun livestream clipper Barton Baste told Decrypt, adding that other meme coins are available that reference the deadly protests in Nepal. “What has happened there recently is extremely tragic,” they pointed out.

0xWinged said crypto’s right-wing base meant the death of Kirk felt more impactful than any previous tragic event that degens profited from—not that meme coin traders are against profiting from death.

The fact all yall were foaming at the mouth for the little Ukranian girl stabbed in the neck coin 24 hours ago, sent that shit to 30 mil, but a few shitposts today is where you draw the line is the most absurd thing I’ve ever witnessed. Disgusting lmao

An “oscillating barrier of tolerance”

The pseudonymous Scorched Earth Policy, who holds the title of chief of staff at the Milady-run Remilia Corporation, told Decrypt the situation is reflective of the “hive mind” of the crypto market. He doesn’t believe market participants draw static ethical lines but are instead moved by a “constantly oscillating barrier of tolerance towards distaste.” The more market participants there are, the closer it will represent the cultural consensus, he said.

“Each of these coins has their own specific context,” Scorched Earth Policy said. “Iryna could have developed just as much backlash as the Charlie coins if her story kept gestating. From what I understand, though, the main coin promised to provide money to her family. [But] that sort of thing is often used as a buffer mechanism to default grift resistance.”

Ultimately, the meme coin trenches are the rawest expression of free markets. With the invention of Pump.fun—and the launchpads that followed—anyone can create a meme coin for free, from their phone, in seconds. Then, anyone with a dollar in their digital wallet can buy that token, and then equally sell it.

“Personally, I feel nothing towards it,” Scorched Earth Policy said. “It’s tasteless to participate in something like that but it’s also naive to treat it like something that can be improved.”

It appears, for now at least, that meme coins pumping and dumping based on murders, disasters, and other ethically questionable ordeals are an unavoidable feature of permissionless markets, where cultural events are currency and their users are anonymous.

Right-Wing Activist Charlie Kirk Dead at 31

by admin September 11, 2025

Charlie Kirk, the prominent right-wing activist and podcast host, was fatally shot while speaking at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. He was 31.

Originally from the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, Kirk went on to become one of the most polarizing figures of his generation. In 2012, when Kirk was just 18, he cofounded the influential conservative youth organizing group Turning Point USA. Kirk specialized in digital and grassroots organizing, harnessing social media to reach young voters. He eventually became a key ally and adviser to President Donald Trump.

Trump announced Kirk’s passing on Truth Social Wednesday afternoon. “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”

Kirk was killed at an event TPUSA was hosting at UVU in Orem, Utah, as part of his organization’s American Comeback Tour, a nationwide campus tour aimed at “equipping students with the tools to push back against left-wing indoctrination in academia,” according to a February press release announcing the series. There are over 800 TPUSA chapters at schools across the country.

Kirk’s Turning Point played an instrumental role in the right’s efforts to dominate the digital political sphere. Over the past few years, the organization has scouted and developed right-wing talent, providing social media creators with platforms and funding to spread conservative ideology across the internet. Kirk was known as a powerful fundraiser, helping TPUSA raise more than $85 million in 2024 alone, according to tax records.

Some of the right’s most popular creators, from Benny Johnson to Jack Posobiec, have had stints as Turning Point contributors, often helming live shows and podcasts like Culture Apothecary by Alex Clark. Kirk also hosted his own daily current events podcast called The Charlie Kirk Show, which regularly topped download charts.

“For so many conservative influencers and content creators, Charlie Kirk represented the blueprint. When I was just 12 years old and Charlie was hardly 18, he was the first person to reach out to me in this movement,” CJ Pearson, a prominent GOP creator, tells WIRED. “His legacy will endure because of the concerted effort he made to incubate the next generation of conservative leaders.”

Kirk championed numerous right-wing causes and was frequently condemned by critics for his incendiary rhetoric. He was a fixture on college campuses across the country, giving speeches imploring young people to embrace Trump and conservatism writ large, and decrying the popularity of what he described as gender ideology and Marxism. He echoed similar ideas in his books, including the 2020 bestseller The MAGA Doctrine. He frequently argued that the United States is a fundamentally Christian country, borrowing from Christian nationalist rhetoric and characterizing the right’s opposition of progressive politics as a spiritual battle.

His influence grew even larger in 2020, when Kirk repeatedly spread misinformation about Covid-19. He fiercely opposed public health measures to stop the spread of the virus, such as mask mandates and school closures, and mocked the World Health Organization. Kirk also led a Stop the Steal rally in Arizona shortly after Trump lost the 2020 election, spreading conspiracy theories about President Joe Biden’s win.

“Charlie Kirk is now a martyr,” Johnson said in an X post on Wednesday. “The world will change forever now, a sign of how dominant and powerful Charlie’s work was.”

On Truth Social, Trump called for flags to be lowered to half-mast until Sunday evening to honor Kirk.

Turning Point USA spokesperson Andrew Kolvet did not respond to multiple requests for comment. Turning Point Action chief operating officer Tyler Bowyer did not respond to a separate request from WIRED.

‘War Is Here’: The Far-Right Responds to Charlie Kirk Shooting With Calls for Violence

by admin September 11, 2025

“You could be next,” influencer and unofficial Trump adviser Laura Loomer posted on X. “The Left are terrorists.”

Christopher Rufo, a conservative activist who popularized the demonization of critical race theory, suggested in a post on X that the “radical left” was responsible for the shooting, and urged the US government “to infiltrate, disrupt, arrest, and incarcerate all of those who are responsible for this chaos.”

Republican representative Derrick Van Orden from Wisconsin also blamed the shooting on “leftwing political violence” and warned on X that “Whoever does not condemn this is part of the problem. The gloves are off.”

On the floor of the House, after Democrats and Republicans observed a “moment of prayer,” led by House speaker Mike Johnson, for Charlie Kirk and his family, representative Lauren Boebert called for a spoken prayer. Some Democrats said no, and referenced the school shooting in Colorado that also occurred Wednesday. Shouting broke out, and Republican representative Anna Paulina Luna yelled across the aisle, “Y’all caused this.” One Democrat, according to The New York Times, responded, “Pass some gun laws!”

On X, Luna continued to blame the left: “EVERY DAMN ONE OF YOU WHO CALLED US FASCISTS DID THIS. You were too busy doping up kids, cutting off their genitals, inciting racial violence by supporting orgs that exploit minorities, protecting criminals, and stirring hate. YOU ARE THE HATE you claim to fight. Your words caused this. Your hate caused this.” Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene also posted about Kirk’s death, calling on people to “rise up and end this.”

Blake Masters, a twice-failed US congressional candidate once backed by Palantir cofounder Peter Thiel and endorsed by Trump, called for RICO investigations into non-governmental organizations as a result of the shooting.

“Left-wing violence is out of control, and it’s not random,” Masters posted on X. “Either we destroy the NGO/donor patronage network that enables and foments it, or it will destroy us.”

Masters was quoting a post from right-wing podcaster and conspiracy theorist Mike Cernovich, who blamed the shooting on the left. “Congressional hearings now,” Cernovich posted on X. “Every billionaire funding far left wing extremism. Soros, Bill Gates, Reid Hoffman. Massive RICO investigations now.”

Chaya Raichik, who operates the anti-LGBTQ account Libs of TikTok, simply wrote: “THIS IS WAR.”

On fringe platforms like Trump’s own Truth Social and The Donald, the rabidly pro-Trump message board that was responsible for some of the planning of the Jan 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol, numerous users echoed Jones’ comments about war.

“War is coming,” one user of The Donald wrote on a thread dedicated to Kirk’s shooting. “War is here,” another responded.

Another user of The Donald wrote in the same thread: “Civil War is coming … this will give the left the blowback they’ve been begging white people for so they can play the victim and justify white genocide.”

Charlie Kirk Shot at Utah Valley University Event

by admin September 10, 2025

Charlie Kirk, the internet personality and cofounder of Turning Point USA, was shot on Wednesday afternoon at Utah Valley University (UVU), where he was holding an event. His condition is currently unknown.

UVU immediately went into lockdown, according to Deseret News. UVU police confirmed in an emergency bulletin that the shooting of a “visiting speaker” took place on campus. Police say that the suspect is in custody. The identity of the suspect is currently unconfirmed.

UVU police did not answer a call from WIRED. A TP USA spokesperson did not immediately respond to WIRED’s request for comment.

“We are closely monitoring reports of the tragic shooting involving Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University,” FBI director Kash Patel said in a statement on X. “Our thoughts are with Charlie, his loved ones, and everyone affected. Agents will be on the scene quickly and the FBI stands in full support of the ongoing response and investigation.”

Senator Mike Lee, of Utah, commented about the shooting in a post on X, saying that he’s “tracking the situation” at UVU and “praying for Charlie Kirk and the students there.” Vice President J.D. Vance likewise posted on X: “Saying a prayer for Charlie Kirk, a genuinely good guy and young father.

In a post on Truth Social, President Donald Trump said, “We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM.” The White House did not immediately respond to WIRED’s request for comment.

Videos of the shooting began to appear on social media on Wednesday afternoon, soon after reports of the shooting began to circulate.

Kirk’s stop in Utah was part of TP USA’s “American Comeback Tour,” where he staged his signature “prove me wrong” debates on campus. At Utah Valley University and Utah State University, the events sparked intense backlash: more than 6,000 students and faculty signed petitions urging Utah State administrators to cancel Kirk’s appearance later this month, arguing his presence conflicts with campus commitments to inclusivity. Critics described the tour as a “campus martyr” strategy designed to generate viral content whether through protests or cancellations.

Kirk, 31, cast the appearances as a defense of free speech and a chance to promote his brand of Christian nationalist conservatism.

Turning Point USA, which began in 2012 as a student group, has grown into a well-funded hub of right-wing activism. Along with its political advocacy arm, Turning Point Action, the organization has become a key player in the MAGA movement, channeling millions of dollars into “chase the vote” campaigns backed by election-denying candidates.

Additional reporting by Makena Kelly, Jake Lahut, and Caroline Haskins.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Charlie Woods makes ace at TPC Sawgrass during Junior Players

by admin September 1, 2025

Aug 31, 2025, 04:34 PM ET

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Another year, another hole-in-one for the 16-year-old son of Tiger Woods.

Charlie Woods made an ace on the third hole at TPC Sawgrass on Sunday in the final round of the Junior Players Championship. Just like his hole-in-one in the final round of the PNC Championship last December, he wasn’t sure that it went in until he heard the gallery.

Editor’s Picks

Woods shot an even-par 72 to tie for 31st in the American Junior Golf Association event at the Stadium course, where his father won twice at The Players Championship.

He finished 16 shots behind Miles Russell, who shot 70 to win by two. Russell reached the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur earlier this month and is an alternate for the Walker Cup.

Woods didn’t have the only hole-in-one on Sunday. Guus Lafeber of the Netherlands had an ace on the par-3 eighth hole. He tied for 19th.
