Helldivers 2 developer explains why it’s so big to install on PC, and why that won’t be changing anytime soon

Helldivers 2 takes up around 150GB to install on PC (three times larger than on console), and the game’s deputy technical director has now explained why that won’t be changing anytime soon.

In a new blog post on Steam, Arrowhead’s Brendan Armstrong explained for the PC version the developers utilised data duplication to reduce loading times, something that’s primarily used to optimise games for HDDs.

As the older storage drives use a physical arm to read data, duplicating that data can make it quicker to find and thereby reduce loading times. SSDs don’t work in this way, which explains why the console versions of Helldivers 2 take up less storage space.

However, as Armstrong acknowledged, HDDs are part of the game’s minimum specs on PC but the studio doesn’t know how many players are still using them.

“Our best estimates put it at around 12 percent of all PC gamers but the data is very unreliable and relies on a lot of extrapolations,” said Armstrong. “Until we can more accurately determine the number of mechanical HDDs that Helldivers 2 is installed on, it is difficult to know how many players will be impacted by reducing the amount of data duplication. Even if that number is small, keep in mind that the load time for each player dropping into a mission is determined by the slowest member of the squad.”

Still, the studio is “actively exploring” a number of solutions for the future, although it “cannot eliminate all duplication without making loading times for mechanical HDDs 10 times slower and we do not feel that this is acceptable”.

In the short term, unused assets will be removed in the next update, though these will be replaced by new additions so won’t reduce the amount of storage space required.

A medium term solution is to bundle frequently used assets and remove duplicates, though Armstrong admitted this would increase load times for players using HDDs. In the long term, engine improvements are planned to not waste RAM loading data that isn’t needed.

A further solution would be to make the highest resolution textures an optional download. However, this isn’t natively supported in Arrowhead’s engine so would be a substantial project, Armstrong explained. As such, time on this would not be spent elsewhere on optimising performance or fixing stability issues.

“We’re taking your concerns very seriously but there are no easy solutions,” Armstrong surmised. “Until we live in a world where we know that most of our PC players are using SSD drives, sacrificing some extra hard drive space is necessary to ensure we’re all able to load into missions in a reasonable amount of time. We’ve clearly reached the limits of how much duplicated data is acceptable so smarter solutions and compromises are now required. We are very carefully weighing up the costs and tradeoffs of the options we have, and we’ll be sure to find a better balance between loading times and installation size soon.”

As a broader issue of game size, Armstrong’s reasoning explains why many modern games on PC now require an SSD, even as a minimum requirement. Arrowhead has instead aimed Helldivers 2 at a wider spectrum of PC specs, but this comes at a storage cost.

This blog post is the first of what the developer aims to be a series of posts detailing the technical challenges it’s working on.

An update for Helldivers 2 is due later this month to alleviate a number of performance issues players are currently experiencing, particularly as the game has grown in size and content since release.

Helldivers 2 also made its way to Xbox Series X/S consoles back in August, becoming the first Sony-published game on the platform and further broadening the audience.

Game Developer Conference rebrands as GDC Festival of Gaming: “the industry is changing and so are we”

The Game Developer Conference is rebranding as GDC Festival of Gaming, with the next event taking place March 9-13, 2026, in San Francisco, California.

Announcing the change on social media, the organization claimed it was “changing the game” as “the industry is changing and so are we.”

“The landscape has transformed. Budgets are tighter. Attention is fractured. Discovery is harder than ever. New tech and tools have redefined who can create. Our community needs more connection, visibility, and support,” the organizers explain.

“The Festival of Gaming exists to meet your needs — bringing the entire industry together at a moment that matters. More Connection. More Opportunity. More Relevance.

“From conference to industry game changer, [GDC is] the full game-making journey, in one place.”

There will be a new pass structure for March 2026’s event, with “more access” and “no more trade-offs” so full access is “the baseline – not the exception.” The Festival Pass replaces All Access at a “dramatically” lower price, with start-up and academic discounts available.

The next GDC conference — now GDC Festival of Gaming, of course — is scheduled to take place from March 9, 2026 to March 13, 2026 at San Francisco’s Moscone Center.

The organizers of this year’s Game Developers Conference revealed that almost 30,000 people were in attendance. This matches 2024’s figure, but there was an increase in exhibitors at San Francisco’s Moscone Center from 325 to 400.

Over 1,000 speakers took part in the event, which hosted 750 sessions, workshops, roundtable discussions, and networking opportunities. GDC 2025 also introduced the first annual GDC Nights after-hours event, which ran on March 17 and March 20, which welcomed more than 6,000 attendees.

Endless Legend 2’s demo had its critics – here’s how Amplitude are changing the early access build in response

I confess, after reading the comments on yesterday’s Endless Legend 2 early access impressions, I am mortally afeared that I’m one of those accursed “positive outliers” I keep reading about in the Gamer Witchfinder Almanac. Seemingly, a fair portion of you were turned off by the recent Steam demo. You may be interested, then, to read specifics about how Amplitude have changed the game in response to demo feedback.


As detailed in a new Steam post, here’s what they think you liked. Firstly, the Tidefall mechanic, whereby the ocean retreats periodically to reveal extra playable terrain, and the regular Monsoons that sweep the land. “This was a core element of the game, and we were happy to see it having a real impact,” the devs write, adding that they tinkered a lot with the quantity of Monsoons and Tidefalls. Apparently, there were once eight smaller Tidefalls to every game of Endless Legend 2, so many that players began ignoring them.


They also reckon you’re keen on the asymmetrical faction design – “always a focus of Amplitude” – and that you’re mostly enjoying the art and sound, including the map design, characters and jingles for stuff like minor factions, or the weird echoey thudding you might hear during Monsoons.


Now for weaknesses. According to Amplitude, the bulk of the negative feedback concerned the user interface. “A quarter of reviews mentioned UI and only 30% of those comments were positive,” they note. “In reading all your feedback we realize it’s not as simple as making a few changes and we are looking at something larger. There are instances where we displayed the wrong or not enough information. There were UI and text bugs to fix and we think more is needed here, which will take some time.”


In particular, they’re looking at making the city screens more intelligible. “Adjacency, leveling districts, managing population, and having clear decisions on what to build next were all muddy,” the devs write. This is a “flow issue”, apparently, which I guess refers to how your eyeballs and attention move from one UI element to the next in the course of urban management.

Amongst other things, they might change up Districts so that you can select them from a construction list like Improvements, rather than picking a tile to build on first. “This will take time to change and won’t be in the initial Early Access, but we will be sharing concepts with you to get feedback,” the devs comment.


To belatedly update my impressions from yesterday, I haven’t had much of a problem with the UI in the early access build, but there were definitely a couple of moments this week when the verdant tile designs made it hard to discern, say, city centres, or units inside cities. It’s definitely rather busy, which is to be expected for a 4X strategy game with such florid factions and a turbulent expanding map. I also sometimes forgot what right-click and left-click do in different contexts. I don’t consider any of these deal-breakers, however.


Following on from those UI thoughts, Amplitude acknowledge that some players have found the colourful world a little too hallucinogenic. They’ve addressed this in early access by making city foundations clearer, so you know to build there, while getting rid of bugs (not the Necrophage) that caused blurriness, and adding more graphics options. They’ve also reduced the colour saturation of the terrain a little and made the all-important hexagonal grid lines more prominent, while shrinking certain fancier vegetation that players kept confusing with Anomalies.


“It’s a difficult balance between providing a lush, detailed world where you can see the leaves blow in the wind during monsoon, and still not have to strain or be confused when trying to see information you need to play,” the developers observe.


In my impressions of Endless Legend 2, I was most critical of the character writing. Demo players were also iffy about this side of the game. In their Steam post, Amplitude note that there are many more words in Endless Legend 2 than the 2014 original, including reams of character dialogue. “We want heroes to feel personal and deep,” they write. “They may be members of your council, have their own friends and enemies, and they talk directly to you and each other. But this additional granularity also came with issues.


“For Early Access we have updated the presentation of the dialog, we are cutting lines and events to focus on only the best and most suitable,” the devs continue. “In some cases, the wrong character would say something, or a character it didn’t make sense for, which we are fixing.” I definitely picked up on a few instances of the latter, but my overarching problem with the character writing is that the focus on characters doesn’t do certain factions justice. The Necrophage are a horde, not a cast. The Aspect are a reef, not an ensemble. That’s what I find attractive about them conceptually, at least.


Endless Legend 2 launches into early access on 22nd September. It’ll start off with five factions. They’re planning to add a sixth plus multiplayer and custom faction support before the 1.0 release next year. If you end up disliking it please don’t burn my house down.

TikToker goes viral for changing homeless mother’s life with unreal gifts

TikTok star MDMotivator is competing with MrBeast after changing a single mother’s life by giving her a quarter-million dollars in cash, a home, and even free daycare for her children.

MDMotivator, real name Zachery Dereniowski, is an influencer with nearly 7 million subscribers on YouTube and 23M on TikTok, best known for his wholesome videos raising mental health awareness and filming himself performing random acts of kindness.

For instance, in one of his uploads, Dereniowski raised over $238K for a homeless man and his son with autism, while in another, he purchased 1,000 roses to give out to residents at a nursing home.

One of his latest random acts of generosity is going viral for how he went above and beyond to not only change the life of one person, but their entire family for generations to come.

TikToker gives homeless family $750K, mortgage-free house & more

On September 17, 2025, MDMotivator uploaded a video to TikTok showing himself surprising a 32-year-old single mother based in Michigan named Brienna, along with her two children, aged five and seven years old.

The family had been struggling with homelessness and living in and out of shelters. Both of Brienna’s parents had died, and she was escaping an abusive relationship, leaving her with little support.

In his video, he handed her a manila envelope with “ten full-time job offers” inside, as well as pre-paid free day care for as long as she needs it.

That’s not all; the influencer even gifted her a new white, four-door sedan, a new home in a safer neighborhood with a completely paid-off mortgage, and even handed over $500,000 to keep herself and her children financially stable for decades to come.

In full, Brienna actually got $750K, but some of that money was used to purchase her new home. Over on Instagram, Dereniowski explained that the house he’d used in the video was actually a ‘prop home’ to help keep her location private.

The influencer also connected Brienna with a financial advisor to help navigate her newfound wealth, set aside funds for her children’s education, and make investments so she “never has to worry about money again.”

Brienna had actually been featured in one of Dereniowski’s videos prior to this specific upload. On September 14, Dereniowski published a call to action to help raise money for her and her children, who were sitting on the sidewalk near a park.

In this video, Brienna offered the TikToker a blanket, assuring him that he didn’t need to return it. Her generosity, despite her meager means, inspired the internet to raise enough money to keep her family secure for generations.

“A house, $500,000, a job, and free daycare? YOU JUST CHANGED THEIR ENTIRE LIVES!” one viewer wrote on TikTok.

“You are PROOF that kindness changes lives,” another said.

“No mortgage? Financial advisor? This is how you give,” yet another commented.

Dereniowski’s video has racked up over 14 million views on TikTok in just one day, even drawing comparisons to fellow YouTuber MrBeast, who is also known for his charitable projects such as building wells to provide communities with clean water and working to end child labor in West Africa.

Founders of Subnautica 2 studio Unknown Worlds accuse parent company Krafton of “changing story mid-litigation”

The founders and former leadership team of Subnautica 2 developer Unknown Worlds have successfully blocked Krafton’s request for a court-ordered protective order, claiming the publisher “chang[ed] its story mid-litigation about why it fired the founders and seized control over Unknown Worlds.”

New court papers from September 12 and seen by GamesIndustry.biz confirm the court dismissed Krafton’s forensic inspection request, without prejudice, and also denied Krafton’s order compelling preservation, calling the request “unnecessary.” Both parties are now expected to meet and confer.

Details of the legal complaint against Krafton, Inc. by the former leadership of Subnautica 2 developer Unknown Worlds became public in July. The complaint concerns a $250 million bonus payout tied to revenue targets for the 2025 Early Access release of Subnautica 2, which the former shareholders of Unknown Worlds Entertainment, represented by Fortis Advisors LLC, allege owners Krafton, Inc. sought to avoid paying out by delaying the game using “pressure tactics.”

In its defense, Krafton accused the three former leaders of then threatening to self-publish Subnautica 2, “releasing it without Krafton’s backing, marketing, promotion, or distribution.” This, Krafton claims, left it with “no choice but to terminate their employment.”

The company also alleged that Max McGuire, Ted Gill, and Charlie Cleveland downloaded tens of thousands of “company files” and emails in the lead up to these terminations and claimed the former leadership “refused” to return “or at the very least confirm” what devices and confidential information remained in their possession.

Now, the founders claim that while Krafton initially alleged it fired them because of the founders’ “supposed intention to proceed with a premature release of Subnautica 2,” and “withdrawn game readiness as a grounds to justify its actions,” it has now “pivoted to a new theory that it admittedly came up with only after the fact: that it terminated the Founders and seized control because the Founders backed up files they were entitled to access in their work for Unknown Worlds.”

“Krafton’s disorganized retreat raises more questions than answers,” the court filing stated. “To say Krafton’s new theory is a Hail Mary would be an understatement – both because the downloads were not wrongful and because Krafton claims not to have learned of them until after it had fired the Founders. The downloads cannot have been the actual motivation for termination.”

Consequently, lawyers for former CEO Ted Gill, co-founder and creative director Charlie Cleveland, and co-founder and CTO Max McGuire requested that the court deny Krafton’s request for a forensic inspection, as well as dismiss a motion for a protective order on the grounds of its “shift in theories.”

Antarctica Is Changing Rapidly. The Consequences Could Be Dire

Seen from space, Antarctica looks so much simpler than the other continents—a great sheet of ice set in contrast to the dark waters of the encircling Southern Ocean. Get closer, though, and you’ll find not a simple cap of frozen water, but an extraordinarily complex interplay between the ocean, sea ice, and ice sheets and shelves.

That relationship is in serious peril. A new paper in the journal Nature catalogs how several “abrupt changes,” like the precipitous loss of sea ice over the last decade, are unfolding in Antarctica and its surrounding waters, reinforcing one another and threatening to send the continent past the point of no return—and flood coastal cities everywhere as the sea rises several feet.

“We’re seeing a whole range of abrupt and surprising changes developing across Antarctica, but these aren’t happening in isolation,” said climate scientist Nerilie Abram, lead author of the paper. (She conducted the research while at Australian National University but is now chief scientist at the Australian Antarctic Division.) “When we change one part of the system, that has knock-on effects that worsen the changes in other parts of the system. And we’re talking about changes that also have global consequences.”

Scientists define abrupt change as a bit of the environment changing much faster than expected. In Antarctica these can occur on a range of times scales, from days or weeks for an ice shelf collapse, and centuries and beyond for the ice sheets. Unfortunately, these abrupt changes can self-perpetuate and become unstoppable as humans continue to warm the planet. “It’s the choices that we’re making right now, and this decade and the next, for greenhouse gas emissions that will set in place those commitments to long-term change,” Abram said.

A major driver of Antarctica’s cascading crises is the loss of floating sea ice, which forms during winter. In 2014, it hit a peak extent (at least since satellite observations began in 1978) around Antarctica of 20.11 million square kilometers, or 7.76 million square miles. But since then, the coverage of sea ice has fallen not just precipitously, but almost unbelievably, contracting by 75 miles closer to the coast. During winters, when sea ice reaches its maximum coverage, it has declined 4.4 times faster around Antarctica than it has in the Arctic in the last decade.

Put another way: The loss of winter sea ice in Antarctica over just the past decade is similar to what the Arctic has lost over the last 46 years. “People always thought the Antarctic was not changing compared to the Arctic, and I think now we’re seeing signs that that’s no longer the case,” said climatologist Ryan Fogt, who studies Antarctica at Ohio University but wasn’t involved in the new paper. “We’re seeing just as rapid—and in many cases, more rapid—change in the Antarctic than the Arctic lately.”

While scientists need to collect more data to determine if this is the beginning of a fundamental shift in Antarctica, the signals so far are ominous. “We’re starting to see the pieces of the picture begin to emerge that we very well might be in this new state of dramatic loss of Antarctic sea ice,” said Zachary M. Labe, a climate scientist who studies the region at the research group Climate Central, which wasn’t involved in the new paper.

Steam Review Scores Are Changing Amid Endless Review-Bombing

Valve is overhauling how Steam reviews are displayed in a new update, it announced on Monday. The percentage score usually assigned to games based on the number of positive and negative user reviews will now exclude reviews written in other languages. The change comes as Steam becomes an increasingly popular global PC storefront and routine review-bombing from players in specific regions can torpedo a game’s rating for everyone on the platform.

“Steam’s growth since then into an even larger global presence means customers in different regions of the world may have vastly different experiences from each other for the same game,” Valve explained in a new blog post. “There are a variety of reasons this may happen for a particular game, including translation issues, cultural references, poor network connections, and many others; things that the Overall Review Scores haven’t been able to capture until now. Calculating a language-specific review score means that we can better distill the sentiment of these different groups of customers, and in doing so, better serve potential customers that belong to those groups.”

Not every game will be impacted by the changes. Valve said it will only start calculating “language-specific review scores” for games with at least 2,000 total publicly visible user reviews, and at least 200 written in a particular language. Players can now click through the review score section of a game’s Steam store page to get a breakdown of the scores across different languages. While this will now be the default mode for review scores on Steam, everyone will still have the option to toggle back to the old system.

“We realize that whenever we make changes to User Reviews, we’re inviting some scrutiny into our motivations for making those changes,” Valve wrote. “Maintaining trust in the system is crucial to us, so we’ve erred on the side of being as transparent as possible.”

The move comes just days after one of Steam’s bigger releases of the season, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, implemented controversial changes to the game following apparent pushback from some Chinese fans over historical references in the fictional Soulslike. While it’s unclear if that game factored into this new policy at all, games on Steam increasingly get review-bombed for all sorts of reasons that don’t always necessarily have to do with the underlying functionality or experience, from allegations of using generative AI to complaints of terms of service requirements in places like Europe.

Data from Simon Carless’ Game Discover newsletter earlier this year showed that a plurality of Steam users in 2024 had “simplified Chinese” as their primary language on the platform, followed narrowly by English in second place. Over the summer, Helldivers 2 was briefly review-bombed after an apparent translation error led Chinese players to feel cheated by one of the game’s weekly mission objectives. The latest changes to review scores seem like an attempt by Valve to keep those two audiences separate, at least when it comes to rating new games.
