Silksong’s Launch Has Already Caused One Game Delay

by admin August 23, 2025

And…there we go! It’s officially Friday, folks. I’m filling in for Ethan, who should have written today’s edition, so if you prefer his take on Morning Checkpoint, well, sorry, you have to deal with me. This morning, we learn about Double Fine’s future, get ready to watch a weird Fortnite stream, check out what’s up with Black Ops 7‘s campaign, and catalog the first game to run away from Silksong‘s September launch. Oh and here’s a trailer for a movie that looks like Jaws, but set during the Second World War. Enjoy?

Aeterna Lucis is delaying its launch to avoid Silksong

Yesterday, after many years of waiting, we finally got a release date for Silksong. It’s arriving next month, and one game is already throwing in the towel and delaying its launch to avoid the indie superstar sequel. On Friday, the devs behind Aeterna Lucis announced that the game was being pushed back from a planned September launch to sometime in 2026, partly because of Silksong and partly because they lack all the dev kits needed for a release on “next-gen” platforms.

“Our initial plan was to launch [Aeterna Lucis] this September,” said the devs in a statement. “But after the announcement of Silksong, we are fully aware that our game wouldn’t have the visibility it deserves. Competing with a phenomenon of that scale would not only be unfair to our team’s effort, but also to you, the community, who expect to experience this adventure under the best possible conditions.”

Double Fine isn’t working on Brutal Legend 2 or any other sequels

Keeper, Double Fine’s next game, looks great! It comes after a big gap following the company’s last game, Psychonauts 2. If you’re worried that, after Keeper‘s release, you’ll be waiting a while again for more Double Fine goodness, take heart: the studio’s founder and boss, Tim Schafer, says that Double Fine is working on multiple projects at the moment. But, if you were hoping for a Brutal Legend 2 or Psychonauts 3, well, I’m sorry to say that ain’t happening anytime soon.

“I’m working on other stuff,” Schafer told IGN. “The studio is doing multiple projects right now and they’re all original IPs, because we did Psychonauts 2 and that will hold us for sequels for a while.”

I don’t have much to add to this other than that we live in a very strange world.

Call of Duty Black Ops 7 is ditching campaign difficulty levels

The latest Call of Duty is making some big changes to the series’ handling of campaigns. Black Ops 7‘s will support co-op, and there will be a rogue-like endgame included with it. Another big change? Black Ops 7 won’t feature the franchise’s usual difficulty levels, like Veteran or Hardened. Instead, as developers, Treyarch explained to IGN, the studio is using co-op to balance the game. The more players you include in the action, the harder things get. It’s an interesting change, though I wonder how more casual players hopping in to play with a friend might handle getting their ass kicked over and over again and having no way to make things easier.

Be careful about spending money on a second-hand Switch 2, as one player has reported receiving a bricked console caused by Nintendo’s anti-piracy policy

by admin June 24, 2025

  • Pre-owned Switch 2 consoles that have been modded are reportedly being bricked by Nintendo’s anti-piracy policy
  • Redditor Bimmytung says they bought a second-hand console from Walmart, only to discover that the Switch 2 is permanently offline
  • Nintendo has been blocking access to online services on the console if players have modded the console using the MIG Flash tool

If you’re thinking about purchasing a second-hand Nintendo Switch 2, you may want to think twice, as Nintendo’s anti-piracy policy has reportedly left some consoles permanently offline.

As IGN reports, Redditor Bimmytung shared a post explaining how they bought a pre-owned Switch 2 from Walmart, only to find that it had been ‘bricked’ by Nintendo after booting it up.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Nintendo had been blocking access to online services on the console if players had used MIG Flash, a tool used to allow players to backup copies of games.

Before the Switch 2 launched, Nintendo suggested in its user agreement that it had the power to ‘brick’ devices that are modded.

“Nintendo may render the Nintendo Account Services and/or the applicable Nintendo device permanently unusable in whole or in part”, it reads.

Those affected will be presented with error code “2124-4508,” which will permanently block players from accessing online services, which is exactly what Redditor Bimmytung has experienced.

Found one. Didn’t end well. from r/switch2

“Been casually looking for a Switch 2. Today I was driving between work sites and stopped at two different Walmarts. At the second one I find a Mario Kart edition sitting in the case and couldn’t believe my luck,” Bimmytung said.

“Physically it’s fine, everything seems there. Notice that the Mario Kart code is scratched off. Hmm. Naturally wonder if the original buyer redeemed the code and returned the system. They knocked $50 off the price so I figured I’d roll the dice and at least have the hardware. Bought a Pro Controller 2 while I was at it.

The Redditor continued, saying, “Get home and go to finish the setup – quickly get Error Code 2124-4508. A quick Google search shows me I’m screwed. FML. Thankfully my local Walmart accepted the return without any fuss but still… I wish nothing but enthusiastic double gonorrhea to the lowlife scum that did this.”

Users with a ‘bricked’ Switch 2 would essentially be unable to access any multiplayer games like Mario Kart World, the eShop, Game Chat, and more.

Thankfully, stores like Walmart can accept refunds, but if you were to buy a second-hand console from eBay without knowing if it had been modded, you’re out of luck.

Hunt: Showdown 1896 goes offline for a day after its latest update caused so many problems Crytek had to remove it completely

by admin June 18, 2025

It’s been a rough day for Crytek, which after struggling for a day to get the new Hunt: Showdown 1896 2.4 update working properly has given up, rolled the whole thing back, and says it will try again later.

Trouble with the update became apparent almost as soon as the Judgment of the Fool update went live, as a raft of complaints about server problems and the inability to purchase Blood Bonds came flooding in. A couple hours after the update went up, Crytek said it was aware of the problem and took all game servers offline so it could fix the issue, with a promise to “update you as soon as the servers are back online.”

More than eight hours later, the servers finally came back—to Steam, anyway—but the 2.4 update did not.

“After exhausting all possible solutions, we have decided to revert the game back to Update 2.3 to restore stability and will be monitoring stability,” Crytek wrote on X. “At this time, the return to Update 2.3 is now available for Steam players. Console players can expect an update soon as we work on restoring availability to PlayStation and Xbox.”

A return date for the 2.4 update was not provided, but Crytek said it will bring it back “as soon as possible.” It also promised that players who encountered problems with purchases during the 2.4 update’s brief life will receive the items they bought as well as other unspecified compensation, and that “as a token of our appreciation for your patience,” all players will have until June 27 to redeem a code (XIE25T57R247N190) granting them 10,000 Hunt dollars.

This has not mollified much of the Hunt: Showdown community. Some fans (particularly those with less-than-great internet) are annoyed at having to download 26GB of data for the 2.4 update, only to have to download another 26GB of data to get rid of it, while others are irritated by the fact that they’ve been unable to play the game for an entire day.

The lack of regular updates from Crytek during the downtime is also a big sore point, and the offer of 10,000 Hunt dollars has also not made much of an impression: It’s a decent amount but not the premium currency, so it can’t be used for things like Legendary skins or battle passes.

Naturally, there’s also been a spate of negative user reviews on Steam, where the “recent reviews” rating now sits at “mixed.” 146 negative reviews have been posted so far today, many of them by players with literally hundreds or even thousands of hours in the game.

For now, that’s where things stand: Hunt: Showdown is playable on Steam, apparently not yet playable on consoles, and the 2.4 update is coming but it’s not clear when. We’ll keep our eyes open and let you know when it does.

MindsEye crashes caused by a memory leak, developer says, as it remains committed to ensuring all players have a great experience

by admin June 12, 2025

The team at MindsEye studio Build A Rocket Boy is “heartbroken that not every player was able to experience the game as we intended,” it has said, promising more fixes throughout June.

MindsEye released earlier this week, however it wasn’t the smoothest of launches. Many found themselves presented with distorting character bugs and stuttering issues when they booted up the game. Build A Rocket Boy released a statement yesterday, when it said it would be prioritising gameplay performance with an update.

“Our teams have worked tirelessly throughout the night to solve many of these issues, and we have now identified that the vast majority of crashes were caused by a memory leak,” the developer has since shared on the MindsEye Discord, adding roughly one in 10 players were impacted.

The Death of Console Exclusives Is Inevitable and I Don’t Know How I Feel About It. Watch on YouTube

“We have developed a hotfix that addresses this issue (alongside other issues that our players have highlighted), which we are working hard to deploy as soon as tomorrow on PC and on consoles once it passes certification with PlayStation and Xbox,” it continued, stating the team is “fully committed to ensuring all players have a great experience”.

Build A Rocket Boy additionally shared its hotfix plans for up until the end of June. These are:

Friday, June 13-15 – Hotfix #1 – PC & Console

What players can expect:

  • Initial CPU and GPU performance improvements, along with memory optimisations
  • Reduced difficulty for the CPR mini-game
  • A new setting to disable or adjust Depth of Field
  • Fix for missing controls in the MineHunter and Run Dungeon mini-games
  • Pop-up warnings for PCs with Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling disabled and for PCs with CPUs prone to crashes

Hotfix #2 – Week of June 16 – PC & Console

What players can expect:

  • Continuous incremental performance and stability improvements
  • Fix for the buggy wheels not visually spinning while driving
  • Fix for areas in Car Manufacturing where players could fall through the world

By End of June – Update 3 – PC & Console

What players can expect:

  • Ongoing performance & stability improvements
  • Rebalanced “Hard” difficulty setting
  • Animation fixes
  • AI improvements

MindsEye has had an unusual lead up to launch, it has to be said. At the end of May, the studio’s co-CEO suggested the game’s negative reaction up until that point had been paid for in a “concerted effort” against the developer. This is something IO Interactive, which serves as the game’s publisher, doesn’t believe to be the case.

Meanwhile, the studio’s Chief Legal Officer and Chief Financial Officer left the company, just one week before MindsEye released.
