James Gunn Explains Why That ‘Superman’ Cameo on 'Peacemaker' Wasn’t Who You Hoped

James Gunn Explains Why That ‘Superman’ Cameo on ‘Peacemaker’ Wasn’t Who You Hoped

by admin September 27, 2025

If you watched the latest episode of the HBO Max original and DC Studios series Peacemaker, the question on every Superman fan’s mind has been answered by James Gunn. We finally know who shows up to help Rick Flag Sr. and ARGUS course-correct Peacemaker’s whole portal door to Earth X (Nazi America) ordeal, leading into the show’s finale.

However, if you haven’t watched, a spoiler warning is ahead!

When it came down to who to get help from with finding the 11th Street Kids and where they took the portal, ARGUS director Rick Flag Sr. went to the most powerful villain they have in their pocket (jail cell). And that, of course, is Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), who has a big price to use his tech to track down Peacemaker and friends.

In an interview with Variety, director and DC head James Gunn discussed the cameo that many thought would be David Corenswet as Superman and why it’s not (despite a certain Peacemaker x Supes selfie). Gunn even went as far as squashing our hopes to see an Earth X or Earth-1 Man of Steel, telling the trade, “No,” to the possibility: “In fact, David was very upset that Nick got to be on the show, and he didn’t. It just didn’t work.”

So no Nazi Superman, which in a way is a relief because we don’t want to tarnish the feel-good way Corenswet opened his era as the hero.

Gunn continued to explain why he needed Hoult back: “I needed Lex in the show to serve a specific purpose. And actually, what Lex and Rick Flag are up to affects very much what happens in an aspect of Man of Tomorrow. So all of that is connected. But this relationship between Rick Flag and Lex Luthor is a potentially negative thing for Superman and all meta-humans.”

He also discussed that it has all been in alignment with his plans for DC Studios as part of his universe reset pitch from the get-go. “I didn’t know some things about it, but I knew what the overall story of the DCU was. That was something I pitched to [Warner Bros. Discovery CEO] David Zaslav before we even took the job. I’m like, here’s the story. There’s going to be this movie, this show, this movie, this show, and those things all fit in in different ways. Some things came, like Clayface, that we didn’t expect, and other things have been a harder road to travel. But the general outline of that overall story is what we are following through Superman, Peacemaker, Man of Tomorrow, and beyond.”

You can stream the first 3 episodes of Only Murders in the Building season 5 now, but one cameo will keep you coming back for more

by admin September 9, 2025

The first three episodes of Only Murders in the Building season 5 are now available to stream on Hulu (Disney+ in the UK and Australia), and I can’t remember the last time I binged a TV show so quickly. You can read my full reaction in my season 5 review, but for me, our lead trio and main ensemble have never been better.

Fans of the series will already know that there’s sadly been another death at The Arconia as we learned at the end of season 4 (RIP, Teddy Coluca’s Lester). Frankly, I’m not sure how many more dead bodies it’ll take for the building to be closed down altogether, but hey, it’s these mysteries that keep bringing us all together.

But not everybody is dead or an incredibly familiar face in the latest installment of the hit series – some hot new bombshells have entered the villa, to borrow a quote from Love Island. In fact, one cameo is so metaphorically hot that I think they’re already my favorite character in Only Murders in the Building season 5… even though we’ve only seen them for all of 30 seconds.

Renée Zellweger’s Camila White will be the best part of Only Murders in the Buliding season 5

Watch On

Spoilers for Only Murders in the Building season 5 ahead.

Of course, I’m talking about the magnificent Renée Zellweger, who’s joined the cast of season 5 as Camila White. It’s the first major role we’ve seen her in since the latest Bridget Jones movie that released in February, and I’m thrilled we’re finally getting more opportunities to see her onscreen outside of wearing massive granny pants with her skirt tucked into them.

She’s introduced in the very last moments of episode 3, after Charles (Steve Martin) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) discover there’s a secret casino underneath The Arconia. They’re trying to figure out where local mobster Nicky Caccimelio (Bobby Cannavale) has disappeared to and who’s connected to Lester’s death. Instead of finding Nicky, though, the trio return to the casino to find three billionaire CEOs, one of them being Camila.

At this stage we know hardly anything about her, but her sheer demeanor tells us she’s going to be a lot of fun this season. If Bridget Jones got drunk off her face, put all of her best clothes on at once and decided to behave like a lofty aristocrat playing a game of Cluedo, we’d have Camila White. It’s difficult to know if we can take her seriously or not – or how much of a problem she’s going to cause The Arconia going forward – but it’s clear she’s going to be hilarious to watch.

Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.

Against her two fellow billionaires, she’s even more entertaining. Millennial Jay Pflug (Logan Lerman) has clearly got rich by some very lucky accident, tapping into every atrocious stereotype that would make you want to avoid him at any cost. Bash (Christopher Waltz) is the complete opposite, a cold-hearted tech billionaire molded in the shape of Steve Job and Bill Gates’ Silicon Valley baby. They’re an odd trio, and thankfully, this dysfunctional dynamic is only just getting started.

Only Murders in the Building season 5 will have been hyping Zellweger up as its new recruit for a reason, and something tells me we could be seeing a lot more of her than anyone else joining The Arconia’s ranks. It’s the perfect fit, and she might be the only person in the show’s history to match Oliver’s (Martin Short) natural level of camp.

NB: An extra shoutout is needed to Dianne Wiest as Lester’s wife Lorraine, who does an incredibly impressive cuckoo impression about 10 minutes into episode 1. More of her too, please.

Watch out, Hollow Knight: Silksong's hiding a sneaky Stardew Valley creatorman cameo

Watch out, Hollow Knight: Silksong’s hiding a sneaky Stardew Valley creatorman cameo

by admin September 6, 2025

In case you missed it, a plucky little game no one had heard anything about whatsoever arrived yesterday. Hollow Knight: Silksong. Yeah, I know, it’s news to me too. Anyway, what’s also news is that Stardew Valley creator Eric Barone has a voice acting cameo in Skong. Though, he’s being all coy about revealing when and where you can hear his dulcet tones.

This came to light because of some valiant folks who’ve already made it to Silksong’s end credits, presumably having pulled mammoth sessions last night, as our own Ollie did to provide you lot with some helpful early game walkthroughs. Or, you know, they’ve gone to the extras bit of the main menu and pressed the button that rolls the credits.

Barone’s name is just chilling there in a section dedicated to additional characters voices, which also features Team Cherry marketing and publishing fellow Matthew Griffin. Naturally, the question is where do folks have to go to find Barone’s cameo?

According to The Verge, who reached out to ConcernedApe LLC’s head of operations Cole Medeiros, neither he nor Barone would just come out and say where the cameo is, despite confirming it is indeed that Eric Barone. Medeiros told the site that the Stardew and and also Haunted Chocolatier dev would “rather not say which character(s) so as not to spoil any surprises for anyone”.

I’ve not had a chance to join the RPS Skong hive currently reviewing/guiding/Edwining their way through Silksong yet, so I’m gonna take a big old stab in the dark as to which character Barone’s voiced.

It’s this one:

I can’t wait to meet this guy

I stress, that’s a total guess based on zero knowledge or information, just vibes. If it’s correct, everyone who reads this owes me a pound of human flesh to feed Horace. If it’s wrong, I’ll pretend it didn’t happen and probably go dark on the socials for a bit, as is the custom when you’ve callously said something wrong and are a bit embarrassed about it.

Outside of the Barone cameo coming to light, Silksong’s arrival also briefly murdered Steam. The storefront has since been revived by a crack team of medics exhibiting the sort of CPR enthusiasm reserved for those who know their ability to play I Am Jesus Christ’s demo is at stake.

‘The Wizard of Oz’ at the Sphere Has a Shocking 2-Second Cameo: David Zaslav

by admin August 29, 2025

The Sphere’s version of The Wizard of Oz has already drawn controversy over its use of AI. Now we know another unsettling element has been introduced into the Hollywood classic: a likeness of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and president David Zaslav.

No, really: the exec, along with the Sphere’s executive chairman and CEO, James Dolan, will be superimposed on the faces of uncredited background characters in what are apparently blink-and-you’ll-miss-them appearances. The stunt is to celebrate the movie’s monumental screening series at the Sphere in Las Vegas.

Dolan announced the surprise AI cameos at a special walkthrough of the experience. “I won’t tell you where, it’s only for like two seconds,” he disclosed, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “[They] replaced the faces of two very short, two-second characters in the movie with mine and [David’s]. I challenge you to find it.”

Now whether they’ll depict Munchkins or flying monkeys (or some other characters entirely) is something you’ll have to discover for yourself if you plan on seeing the MGM classic (now owned by Warner Bros.) in Las Vegas. The Sphere used AI to augment The Wizard of Oz to fit its unconventionally sized and shaped screen, hoping it will attract tourists despite the discourse surrounding the tech.

“I think [with] the controversy around AI replacing humans through technology, we ended up employing more artists on this project than I think Hollywood has employed in previous years, just to continue this journey,” shared the Sphere’s visual effects specialist Ben Grossmann in defense of its use to showcase the film to audiences in a new way.

Let us know what you think of The Wizard of Oz: The Zaslav Cut in the comments.

Why Peacemaker’s White Rabbit cameo has already divided Batman fans

by admin August 22, 2025

Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 1 featured a brief cameo from White Rabbit, a niche DC comics character with a big connection to Batman – and some fans aren’t happy.

James Gunn doesn’t pull many punches in the opening episode of Peacemaker’s new season. He completely retcons the Justice League’s appearance in the Season 1 finale, simply reshooting the scene and replacing them with the Justice Gang.

If you’re invested in the DCU, there’s plenty of Easter eggs to spot and ponder; does the Bludhaven reference mean Nightwing already exists, is Jared Leto’s Joker officially out after those 30 Seconds to Mars jokes, and who is the “jarhead” Harcourt is dating in the other dimension?

Batman isn’t mentioned at all in Episode 1, but we do get a glimpse of a lesser-known character from his rogues’ gallery.

Who is White Rabbit?

DC

White Rabbit, real name Jaina Hudson, is a Gotham City criminal and Batman foe who was first introduced in The Dark Knight Vol 2 #1 in 2011.

Raised in a wealthy family by an American diplomat and Bollywood actress, she grows up to assume the mantle of White Rabbit, a mysterious criminal dressed like a bunny who has the ability to duplicate herself into two separate beings, allowing her to be in two places at once.

Batman has had some notable encounters with her in the comics, like flirting with her non-villainous counterpart at a charity function or spotting her at an Arkham Asylum breakout.

Why Batman fans are unhappy about Peacemaker’s White Rabbit cameo

In Episode 1, White Rabbit is played by Brey Noelle. She’s on-screen for around 10 seconds, crying and storming out of her interview with the Justice Gang.

She’s wearing a comic-accurate costume, complete with the pink-striped and white corset, ears, and knee-high boots. So, what’s the problem?

For those pushing the agenda for Robert Pattinson’s Batman to join the DCU, it makes it look… less likely, given the grittier, less showy aesthetic of Matt Reeves’ Elseworlds universe. Do you think Pattinson’s caped crusader would face off against a villain like this, considering the Penguin’s last name was changed from Cobblepot to Cobb because it sounded more grounded?

“Okay, Battinson is definitely not the DCU Batman,” one user wrote with a screenshot of White Rabbit from the new episode. “It took White Rabbit for people to get off the merger train bc they know Reeves would NEVER,” another posted.

“I really don’t know why it took people so long to realize that their visuals, tones, and thematic approaches are irreconcilable,” a third wrote. “Yeah any ideas or thoughts I had about how it could work for Battison in the DCU after this episode are dead,” another tweeted.

Others aren’t ready to give up hope, citing how projects like Daredevil and Thor: Love and Thunder take place in the same Marvel universe, despite being polar opposites in terms of tone, violence, and character designs.

“I must remind you that each DCU project’s tone and style will be dependent on the director, that includes costumes,” one user argued. “I just don’t think a random obscure cameo in a Peacemaker episode is a thing to judge the direction of a future Batman film. Cos even if it’s not Robert Pattinson, I really don’t think the DCU version’s villains will look like that,” another wrote.

Article continues after ad

“They said she’s from the West Coast, plus her inclusion is mainly to have another random costumed character set up disappointment for Peacemaker,” a third pointed out.

After the first episode, keep tabs on the Peacemaker Season 2 soundtrack, read more about why it isn’t a multiverse story, and catch yourself up on why Peacemaker killed Rick Flag.
