Toilet Time With Your Phone Could Give You a Real Pain in the Butt

by admin October 3, 2025

We use our smartphones just about everywhere, even in the bathroom, though we may not want to talk about that part. A recent study of colonoscopy patients revealed that most used their phones on the toilet at least once a week — and that those phone-on-the-toilet users showed a 46% increased risk for hemorrhoids.

The cause and effect are clear. Caught up in news or games or social media, bathroom users stay seated on the throne longer, with research showing phone users tend to spend more than 5 minutes doing their business. The study says that hemorrhoids are associated with prolonged sitting on the toilet, as well as constipation and increased straining.

Don’t miss any of our unbiased tech content and lab-based reviews. Add CNET as a preferred Google source.

The 125 colonoscopy patients at Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Study who participated in the study answered questions about their bathroom phone habits, and endoscopists evaluated their hemorrhoids (just in case you think you have a bad job). Of all the respondents, 66% used smartphones while sitting on the toilet, and those participants tended to be younger than those who didn’t. More than one-third (37.3%) of smartphone users spent more than 5 minutes sitting on the toilet per visit, while only 7.1% of those without smartphones spent that long seated.

When the numbers were adjusted for age, sex, BMI, exercise activity and “straining and fiber intake,” results showed a 46% increased risk for hemorrhoids. Men were more likely than women to spend 6 minutes or more on the toilet, in case you wondered.

Those who used smartphones while on the toilet also admitted to getting less exercise than those who didn’t, which the researchers said “could signify a higher level of engagement with technology and a more sedentary lifestyle outside of the toileting environment.” (Yes, “toileting environment.” Otherwise known as just “the toilet.”)

The most common toilet phone activity was reading news, with 54.3% admitting to doing so, and 44.4% saying they were participating in social media while on the toilet.

The study didn’t directly connect constipation with time spent on the toilet, but Dr. Eamonn Quigley, chairman of gastroenterology at Houston Methodist, told The New York Times that it’s likely those who sit hunched over their phones while on the toilet might be more likely to experience constipation.

If you’re grossed out by the idea of your phone being in close connection with toilet time, you’re not alone. Doctors told the NYT the obvious: Fecal material can get on your hands while you’re wiping and be transferred to your phone, and flushing with the toilet lid open can also spray fecal matter onto your phone. Sure, you wash your hands, but now the stuff is on your phone, so it jumps right back on your hands after you dry them and start scrolling again.

In short, you’re probably going to scroll your phone while occupied in the bathroom. But this study notes that you should be aware that the phone’s fun distractions might make you sit there longer than you planned, and that could have painful consequences.

You are a mail delivering turnip with a surprisingly nice butt in Letters to Arralla, which is out now

by admin September 17, 2025

There are a bevy of games available in the world that let you play as what can only be described as “a little guy.” However, you can throw all of them out of the window, because I have found the game that has the perfect iteration of such a creature. It is called Letters to Arralla, and in it you quite simply play as a turnip, who has the juiciest derriere I’ve ever seen in perhaps any game ever. Yes, even more so than one of those anime gacha games, this turnip’s rump has got some serious jiggle physics.

A turnip with a pleasant dumptruck does not a game make, though, so here’s the lowdown: you deliver mail! There are plenty of equally funny “little guys” who you can bring mail to on an Australian island, with the added benefit of being able to open said mail. As the game’s Steam page notes, this is a crime – no, really, don’t read other people’s mail, it’s not allowed – but apparently in Letter to Arralla’s world it’s encouraged!

Said pieces of mail include pictogram puzzles you have to solve, and throughout your journey you’ll also need to help the island’s inhabitants figure out personal problems. There’s no pressure to do anything at any particular time, you’re welcome to play around, “throw stuff,” and even “call your mum!”

We might be heading into autumn in this hemisphere, but Australian developer Little Pink Clouds will slowly be making their way towards summer, and that’s exactly the kind of vibe this game gives off. Summer is arguably a video game genre unto itself, with games like Super Mario Sunshine, Outrun, and Boku no Natsuyasumi all being peak examples of such a thing. I think Letters to Arralla could fit quite neatly into that, so it’s one I hope to be able to make time for. Even if it’s only to warm myself back up again.

It’s also out today! And you can pick it up on Steam right here.

‘Scary Movie 6’ Will Make Everyone the Butt of The Joke

by admin September 14, 2025

Marlon Wayans has been talking up what’s in store for Scary Movie 6, and according to him, the series’ trademark crass humor will target any and everyone.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, he hyped up the upcoming horror-comedy flick as a “no holds barred and equal opportunity offender. We just want to make everybody laugh, and we don’t care if you’re sensitive. Even sensitive people need to laugh at themselves.” While skewering well-known movies like The Exorcist and War of the Worlds, earlier installments had jokes you probably felt bad about laughing at back then (if you did laugh). This is, after all, how the Wayans got popular back in the day, something he noted by highlighting White Chicks making fun of “Black people, white people, [and] Hispanic people. That’s just what we do.”

If that has your hackles raised, don’t worry: Wayans insisted it’s all the jabs have been done with love, and hoped the jokes in Scary Movie 6 reflect how comedy has evolved in the time since the movies first came out, and acknowledged not every joke is going to totally land. Still, he argued “you have to acknowledge how comedy has changed. Not just horror, but films have changed, the audience has changed, the world has shifted,” he explains. “I think the way to do that is to make the generational gap part of the conversation. […] Just know that we’re not just laughing at you, you get the chance to laugh at others.”

Mainstream goofy comedies got a resurgence with the success of The Naked Gun back in August, and Wayans is hopeful Scary Movie 6 can continue that trend while working as “a great conversation piece that [lets us] sit down and laugh together, over three generations of people who haven’t had great comedy in a long time.”

Scary Movie 6 hits theaters on June 12, 2026.
