Luke Hughes would ‘love’ to play with both brothers on Devils

NEWARK, N.J. — Two of the Hughes brothers are now under long-term contracts with the New Jersey Devils, after defenseman Luke Hughes signed a seven-year contract extension this week and rejoined his superstar brother Jack at training camp Thursday.

Could Quinn Hughes, star defenseman with the Vancouver Canucks, join his brothers in the near future?

Ever since Canucks team president Jim Rutherford said last April that Quinn “wants to play with his brothers,” there has been speculation about when and where that reunion might happen.

Editor’s Picks

Luke and Jack are now both under contract in New Jersey until 2030, while Quinn will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2026-27 season.

“I think the three of us would all love to play together someday. Whether it’ll happen or not, who knows? We’ll see,” Luke said Thursday. “But I know he loves Vancouver and he’s the captain there. We love being here. You never know. Never say never.”

Luke signed a seven-year, $63 million contract Wednesday that carries a $9 million annual cap hit. The 22-year-old defenseman is entering his fourth NHL season and has 93 points in 155 games, along with two assists in four playoff games.

Luke missed a chunk of training camp during contract talks with the Devils. Quinn Hughes also missed part of the 2021-22 preseason during free agent contract talks with the Canucks before signing a six-year, $47.1 million deal with Vancouver. Luke said Quinn offered his perspective as talks with the Devils continued.

“[He said] just stay patient and get what you want. As a family, we decided the deal and we’re really happy of the outcome and really excited to be here for the next seven years,” Luke said.

Jack said he didn’t have much advice to give his brother, given that he’d never been through a “holdout” like Luke had.

“I think it was important for him to get a deal that he’s really comfortable with,” Jack said. “I know he’s going to be ready to go for the season no matter what and you never want to miss time. But most importantly you need a deal you’re comfortable with.”

On top of missing a chunk of training camp, Luke’s preparation for this season was interrupted with his recovery from May shoulder surgery. Devils coach Sheldon Keefe said the team is taking that under consideration in working him back into the lineup.

Luke said he has been “bag [skating] myself” back home, skating five times a week to get into playing shape. In his first day back in camp, he skated in two consecutive practice sessions to start making up for lost time.

“That is the climb. It’s a bit of a unique situation where not only has he missed camp, but he’s also coming off of a major shoulder surgery since he played last,” Keefe said. “So we want to make sure we give him the appropriate time. But he looks good. He has been through all the medicals and testing that guys would normally go through at the beginning of camp, and he’s cleared.”

Keefe said he doesn’t see a reason why Luke won’t be ready for the Devils’ regular-season opener against the Carolina Hurricanes on Oct. 9.

The ‘Stranger Things’ Brothers Tease Their Paramount Plans

by admin September 28, 2025

2025 will end with the end of Stranger Things, after which creators Matt and Ross Duffer will be at Paramount. While the pair are knee deep in putting the finishing touches on their Netflix hit, they talked up what’s to come once they’re exclusive to the Mission: Impossible and Transformers studio.

Movie-wise, the brothers intend to focus on original things, but they also told Variety they wouldn’t mind tackling a known property owned by Paramount. However, they stressed any IP they took on would have to be ones they “really responded to,” not just something that’s popular or would make a good headline. They didn’t offer more specifics in terms of criteria, but Matt brought up “botched” properties where “someone swung and missed, [and] then you have an opportunity to do it properly.”

When they’re not tackling movies, the Duffers hope to find and foster new talent, akin to what Shawn Levy did for them by backing Stranger Things. They don’t want to get as big as Bad Robot, though, so they’ll just focus on “identifying really talented people and then just helping them get their vision made and then mostly staying out of the way.”

As for the Duffers’ TV ventures, they intend repeat what they did with Stranger Things and make event shows in the eight-to-10 episode range. Shows with 20-episode or more seasons are “fatiguing,” said Matt, and neither brother grew up a fan of that model. But they want to continue making shows with shorter seasons and a “when it’s done” model, with Matt calling the traditional way “a diminishing return. I like the buildup.” Brother Matt also acknowleged that it’s strange the two even ended up in TV to begin with when they grew up on movies and aren’t really fans of television—but hey, look forward to the last run of Stranger Things episodes beginning November 26.

Feds Charge Brothers in Alleged $8 Million Crypto Kidnapping of Minnesota Family

by admin September 26, 2025

In brief

  • Two brothers have been charged with kidnapping after allegedly holding a family hostage in a plot to steal $8 million in crypto.
  • The brothers allegedly forced their way into the family’s home at gun point.
  • The local school district canceled a homecoming football game as police searched for the brothers.

U.S. federal prosecutors in Minnesota charged two Texas brothers with violently kidnapping a Minnesota family and stealing $8 million in crypto, according to a filing on Thursday by the U.S. Department of Justice.

The U.S. Attorney Office, Minnesota district accused Raymond Christian Garcia, 23, and Isiah Angelo Garcia, 24 of using an AR-15-style rifle and a shotgun to force their way into the family’s Grant, Minnesota home, where they bound a man, his wife and their son, and held them hostage until he transferred the amount to their digital wallets. The DOJ did not reveal which digital coins specifically were stolen.

The ordeal led to the cancellation of a homecoming football game. Grant is in the Eastern part of the state about 45 minutes from Minneapolis.

“A violent kidnapping that stole $8 million and silenced a homecoming game is not just a crime.  It is a blow to the sense of safety of everyone in Minnesota,” Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson said.

He added: “This is not normal. Minnesotans should not accept wild violence and thievery as normal.  Every Minnesotan deserves to live in peace and a life unaffected by rampant crime.”

Mahtomedi High School canceled its September 22 game against Bloomington Kennedy for the “safety of its community,” as police searched for the alleged kidnappers.

Investigators allege that the Garcia brothers restrained the family for nine hours starting on September 19. At one point, Isiah Garcia forced the father at gunpoint to drive three hours away to a family cabin to access a portion of the crypto holdings, while Angelo remained with the wife and son.

According to the DOJ report, the son managed to call 911 when Angelo left the home. Police arrived to witness the son and mother still zip-tied and Angelo fleeing the home. They later found a suitcase that held a disassembled rifle, ammunition, clothing and beverages.

Investigators tracked a rented Chevrolet white Malibu to the brothers’ home in Waller, Texas, where they were arrested. Isiah Garcia has confessed to the kidnapping, according to the DOJ report.

The DOJ charged them with kidnapping. The defendants made their initial appearances in federal court on Thursday.

The brothers also face three counts of kidnapping with a firearm, one count of first-degree aggravated robbery, and three counts of first-degree burglary, according to a complaint in Washington County, Minnesota.

Crypto-fueled kidnappings—dubbed “wrench attacks”—are on the rise worldwide. In France, a total of 25 suspects were arrested this year after a series of crypto-driven attacks and kidnapping attempts, including the failed abduction of the pregnant daughter of Pierre Noizat, co-founder and CEO of French crypto exchange Paymium.

And Ledger co-founder David Balland and his wife were kidnapped in France and held for ransom back in January, with Balland’s finger reportedly cut off and sent to associates. Police liberated the couple after about 24 hours of captivity.

Gemini Stock ($GEMI) Surges 14% on IPO Debut; Winklevoss Brothers Predict $1M Bitcoin

by admin September 13, 2025

Gemini Space Station, the cryptocurrency exchange founded by Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, surged in its Nasdaq debut Friday after raising $425 million in an initial public offering.

The company priced its IPO late Thursday at $28 a share, valuing Gemini at about $3.3 billion before trading began. That price was above the revised $24 to $26 range it set earlier in the week and well above the initial $17 to $19 range. The offering covered 15.2 million shares.

On Friday, the stock opened at $37.01, a 32% premium to the offer price. Shares climbed as high as $45.89 during intraday trading before settling at $32, still 14% above the IPO level by the close.

Gemini, headquartered in New York, operates a suite of crypto services including a spot exchange, custody solutions for institutions, a U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin, a crypto rewards credit card, and staking products. As of the end of July, the company held more than $21 billion of assets on its platform. Filings show Gemini lost $159 million in 2024 and $283 million in the first half of 2025.

The Winklevoss brothers, who became the first bitcoin billionaires after early investments in the cryptocurrency, appeared on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on the morning of the IPO. Tyler Winklevoss described bitcoin as “gold 2.0” and said adoption remains in the “first inning.” He and his brother projected that bitcoin could reach $1 million within the next decade.

Gemini’s listing follows those of Coinbase (COIN) in April 2021 and Bullish (BLSH), which owns CoinDesk, last month.

Russo Brothers drop cryptic Avengers: Doomsday clue and this could be the answer

by admin September 9, 2025

The Russo Brothers have just uploaded a cryptic Instagram post, and only one thing is clear: Avengers: Doomsday is coming.

Doomsday is one of Marvel’s most mysterious projects ever; certainly more so than Infinity War and Endgame, where everyone had a vague idea of what would happen. Unlike the past saga, we know very little about why everything is happening.

Here’s what we do know: Robert Downey Jr is returning to the MCU to play Doctor Doom, there are 26 confirmed actors in the cast, the original X-Men (Patrick Stewart, James Marsden, and Ian McKellen, etc) are reprising their roles, and it’ll set up Avengers: Secret Wars.

Marvel has been tight-lipped about the film, but Joe and Anthony Russo have given fans a tiny taste of what’s to come.

Russo Brothers tease Avengers: Doomsday in new post

The blurry image shows some white, squiggly lines, and it’s captioned: “DoomsdayIsComing.” Notably, Josh Brolin has already liked it, which could be good for people hoping to see Thanos one more time (especially if they adapt an iconic panel from the comics).

So, what is it? Some people think it’s teasing Moon Knight’s role in Doomsday, others believe it has something to do with Scarlet Witch. No disrespect to the latter camp, but they’d attribute almost anything to Wanda; they just want to see her back in the MCU, and that’s fine.

Here’s what it (probably) is: a photo of Reed Richards’ chalkboard, and it may be blurred out as it could reference Doctor Doom and/or incursions.

“Yall it’s the f**king whiteboard that Reed was using,” one user wrote. “What is Reed cooking up on the board???” another posted. “That’s just the smartest man in the world working like a Tuesday at the Baxter Building,” a third wrote.

So, what could he be jotting down? Equations regarding incursions are the most likely option, given they’re expected to be Doom’s main motivator in Doomsday. For those who aren’t aware what an incursion is, it’s when two universes collide, and at least one is destroyed completely.

There’s been a long-running theory that Steve returning all of the Infinity Stones at the end of Endgame caused an incursion, and Doom may be trying to stop him – or possibly even avenge his world.

It’s also been theorized that Doom will pit the Avengers against the X-Men, and the movie could even end with their deaths (or some of them, at least, with a few staying on for Secret Wars). And that’s before we get to Deadpool…

Brothers Seek to Block Google Search History in $25M Crypto Heist Case

by admin August 26, 2025

In brief

  • Brothers Anton and James Peraire-Bueno filed motions Friday to exclude Google search evidence, claiming prosecutors want to use searches for legal terms to prove criminal intent in their alleged 12-second Ethereum blockchain exploit.
  • The defense says the searches occurred during attorney consultations after being threatened by “anonymous sandwich attackers” and would force them to waive privilege to explain the context.
  • If convicted, the brothers face up to 20 years in prison per count, in what prosecutors call the first criminal case over MEV-boost blockchain exploitation.

Two MIT-educated brothers accused of allegedly stealing $25 million in crypto through a blockchain exploit are fighting to keep their Google search history out of court, saying federal prosecutors want to unfairly use searches for “top crypto lawyers” and “wire fraud statute of limitations” to prove criminal intent.

Anton and James Peraire-Bueno filed the motion in Manhattan federal court on Friday, claiming the searches are “unfairly prejudicial” and occurred during privileged attorney consultations following their alleged April 2023 heist.

U.S. District Judge Jessica G.L. Clarke must now decide whether searches conducted after the alleged crime can demonstrate consciousness of guilt or simply reflect prudent legal consultation during the investigation.

The brothers were arrested in May 2024 on conspiracy, wire fraud, and money laundering charges, with prosecutors calling it a “first-of-its-kind manipulation of the Ethereum blockchain.”

Authorities allege they used their “specialized skills and education” to exploit Ethereum’s MEV-boost system in April 2023, fraudulently intercepting private transactions and diverting $25 million in just 12 seconds.

Court documents reveal they retained counsel immediately after being “threatened by anonymous sandwich attackers” who demanded the return of the allegedly stolen funds.

Defense attorneys provided detailed privilege logs showing Google searches coincided precisely with attorney communications.

A search for “top crypto lawyers” occurred the same day as “communications with potential counsel seeking legal representation,” according to court filings.

“For the government to argue its preferred inference (i.e., consciousness of guilt of the alleged crimes), the government would first need to establish that any given search was connected to this case,” the brothers said in the motion. “But the contents of the searches themselves do not show that.”

The defense claims prosecutors lack witnesses who can provide context for the searches, making any criminal inference “purely speculative.”

“Google search histories can be used as hints, but they’re context-dependent,” Even Alex Chandra, partner at IGNOS Law Alliance, told Decrypt. “The mere fact that someone googled something isn’t automatic proof of intent or guilt.”

“Post-conduct searches are weaker evidence,” he said, compared to searches conducted before alleged crimes, which can show planning or intent.

“It still needs corroborating evidence showing that the searches align with criminal intent,” he added. “Since it would be dangerous if Google searches are determinative alone.”

The brothers also moved to exclude news articles as hearsay with “inflammatory descriptions,” and to block a Twitter screenshot of their alleged “false signature,” saying prosecutors cannot authenticate an image from pseudonymous researcher samczsun’s tweet.

Each brother faces up to 20 years in prison per count if convicted.
