Easy queasy: Borderlands 4 FOV sliders may be coming to console

by admin September 17, 2025

One technical issue the console version of Borderlands 4 is facing is a lack of a customisable field of vision slider, as the game has on PC. Currently the console FOV is low and the zoomed-in perspective is making some players feel sick.

Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford polled console players recently about how strongly they felt about changing this, and three quarters of respondents felt very strongly about it. So, Gearbox appears to be doing something about it.

“We have heard your feedback on FOV (Field of View) sliders on console,” Gearbox announced on the Borderlands 4 X account. “The team is currently exploring how to bring these sliders to both Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 versions. We will continue to read your feedback & prioritise game updates with your experience in mind.”

Borderlands 4 had a popular opening weekend but is facing some backlash on PC for its technical performance there. Randy Pitchford took to X over the weekend to tell players they needed to make some graphical trade-offs if they wanted high frame-rates, and suggested high frame-rates weren’t, in a campaign-based looter shooter like this, the studio’s top priority. “It’s not a competitive FPS,” he said.

Our Borderlands 4 review is currently in the works.

How Shift Codes And Gold Keys Work In Borderlands 4

by admin September 17, 2025

Borderlands 4 is out now! Yay, that’s exciting. However, on PC, it has some performance problems that might dampen your enjoyment. But hey, whatever, you’re here because you want to figure out how Shift Codes work and how to get Gold Keys in Borderlands 4. It’s a weird and some might say unnecessary system, but I’ll help walk you through it. And by the end you’ll be good to go.

First, before we go any further, you need to create a free Shift account. Shift is Gearbox’s very own video game network… thing. It has been around since Borderlands 2, and the website for Shift has basically not changed since then, so it looks old, but it is pretty easy to use. Just hop over to the Shift site and make a free account. Next, you’ll want to link whatever platform you play on, like Xbox, to your new Shift account. To do that, look to the top left of the website and click “Gaming Platforms.” Then select your platform and follow the steps to log in and get everything all synced up. Okay, now, you can start redeeming Shift codes. But first…

What Are Shift Codes?

That’s a great question! Here’s a sticker. Shift codes are alphanumeric codes that are handed out by official Gearbox and Borderlands-related accounts, often on social media. These codes will provide an in-game reward when correctly redeemed. Many people can use a single Shift code, but they often have expiration dates, so older codes might not work.

One of the best and most frequent providers of new Shift codes is Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford himself, so you might want to follow him on X. Sorry about that. And no, I don’t think Pitchford pushed to create Shift simply to get more followers online, but it’s a funny theory.

Technically, Shift codes exist for other Gearbox games, like Aliens: Colonial Marines and Battleborn, but uh… well, these days, 99 percent of Shift codes are connected to Borderlands and Wonderlands because nobody plays Gearbox’s other games. Anyway, once you have a Shift code, either from Pitchford or one of the many fan sites and accounts that catalog them, it’s time to enter that code on the Shift website!

How Do I Use A Shift Code?

There are two ways to enter a Shift code and gain its rewards. The first, and worst way, is to boot up the game the Shift code is connected to and enter the code via that title’s Shift screen. This is a cumbersome way to do this and has no benefits and many drawbacks. Do you really want to enter a long string of letters and numbers with an Xbox gamepad and on-screen keyboard? Nah.

©Gearbox / Kotaku

The better way to use your Shift Codes is to do so on your phone or PC. Once you’re logged into your Shift account, you can just copy the code and hop over to the website. Then you just click “Rewards” and pop your Shift code into the empty box.

Depending on the code, you’ll likely need to specify a platform. So, for example, if you put in a Shift code for a Gold Key in Borderlands 4, the game will ask you what platforms you want to redeem it on and show you every platform you have linked. Fun fact: Most codes can be reused for each connected platform. If you enter it in correctly, you’ll get a prompt letting you know, and the rewards feed below where you entered the code will update to show you what you just earned, in what game, and on which platform.

Wait, I Want Gold Keys, Not Shift Codes!

Calm down. Shift codes are how you get Gold Keys. And while it is true that not all Shift codes provide Gold Keys for various Borderlands games—some provide cosmetics and other bonuses—the vast majority of codes in 2025 will give you Gold Keys.

Just keep in mind that Gold Keys, once redeemed, can’t be used in any other Borderlands game. I have nearly 80 of the bastards waiting to be used in Borderlands 3, but none of them can make the leap to Borderlands 4. It makes me very sad.

How Do I Use These Gold Keys In Borderlands 4?

All Gold Keys in all Borderlands titles, including Borderlands 4, are used to open big gold chests that can be found in the hub areas of the various games. These chests have a high chance of dropping really good loot, including rare legendary guns and gear. In Borderlands 4, there are actually a few gold chests located at various safehouses and other points of interest, but be aware you can’t open a Gold chest until you unlock the Outbounder’s village near the starting area of the game in the Fadefields.

©Gearbox / Kotaku

To use a key, just go up to the chest and hit the open button. But be warned! You really shouldn’t do this until you are at least level 40, as early on in the game you’ll likely just replace whatever you get with better gear quickly as you level up. Also, if you’re playing with randos or greedy friends, be aware that the gear you get from the chest will fly out of it after 30 seconds or so, and at that point, anyone can grab it. This happened to me. I lost a great revolver. My friends laughed. I grew more bitter.

And that’s all you need to know about Shift codes and Gold Keys. If you want lots of Shift Codes for Borderlands 4, I’d recommend this account on Twitter that rounds them all up and posts them with a direct link to the Shift site, making it easy to snag some codes and keys on your phone while you are out and about. Or follow Randy Pitchford on Twitter, I guess?

Undertale turns 10 years old today

Undertale has nearly 150,000 “overwhelmingly positive” reviews on Steam. To say that this disarmingly simple-looking indie game has had a large impact would be an understatement.

In fact, it was one of our games of 2015. “Few games have ever touched so many people so deeply, or been so misunderstood by their critics,” wrote Richard Cobbett in his piece for us.

“It’s something harder to process – an incredibly smart, well-written and insightful RPG that’s comfortable enough to do the gaming equivalent of showing up in a tracksuit and sneakers. You look at any part of it and yes, it’s simple. Combine the pieces, and it’s special…”

It’s the sort of game that reveals itself, its humour and warmth, in the retelling, etching itself deeper in the memory with every subsequent lap.

“The game is pretty damn optimal” – Randy Pitchford responds to Borderlands 4 PC performance complaints

by admin September 16, 2025

Gearbox Software boss Randy Pitchford has been busy defending Borderlands 4 against complaints of poor game performance on PC. He said the game was “pretty darn optimal” and that people shouldn’t expect to be able to run it in huge resolutions at max settings and get incredible frame-rates.

“Every PC gamer must accept the reality of the relationship between their hardware and what the software they are running is doing,” Pitchford wrote on X. “We have made an amazing and fun and huge looter shooter campaign game. The game is pretty damn optimal – which means that the software is doing what we want without wasteful cycles on bad processes.

“With Borderlands 4, every PC gamer has a LOT of tools to balance their preferences between FPS, resolution, and rendering features. If you aren’t happy with the balance between these things you are experiencing, please tune to your preferences using the tools available to you.”

Watch on YouTube

It’s “absolutely reasonable” for a looter shooter like Borderlands 4 to focus on achieving 60 frames-per-second at recommended settings, he said, presumably meaning rather than anything higher. But you can’t have it all. If you want all the visual effects and a very high resolution, you’ll have to trade-off against frame-rate, he said, and vice versa.

“It is a mistake to believe or expect that PCs between minimum specification and recommended specification can achieve all of extremely high frame rate, maximum/ultra features, and extremely high resolution,” Pitchford wrote. “If that last post makes you have a negative reaction, I bet you have emotions and expectations that you feel aren’t sufficiently attended to. I’m sorry.

“But please accept that the game is doing a lot and running pretty optimally and that you may have to either accept some trade offs between fps, features and resolution as your preference or you will continue to be disappointed.”

For its part, Gearbox is doing “significant” work on PC performance, Pitchford said, and it’s fixing the “few real issues” affecting a “very, very small percentage of users”. In the meantime, Pitchford recommended lowering resolution or using a scaling resolution solution like DLSS to improve the performance of your game. “The game was built to take advantage of it,” he said. “This is not a competitive FPS.”

Poor PC performance of Borderlands 4 led to a glut of negative Steam reviews during launch weekend, where the game currently sits on an overall review average of “Mixed”. It has, however, had a seemingly very popular opening weekend, reaching a high of just over 300K concurrent players.

But it’s not just the PC version of Borderlands 4 that’s having some technical headaches. Console players have been struggling with a lack of customisable control over the game’s field of vision (FOV) – a setting players have control over on PC – and are finding it too zoomed in, and it’s making people feel sick.

Pitchford responded to these concerns by first claiming there is no motion blur in Borderlands 4, as some people had thought there was. Then, bizarrely, by explaining that the reason there is no FOV slider in the console versions isn’t due to performance issues but because “it might affect fairness”. But what he meant by that wasn’t entirely clear. “I can’t really talk about it yet,” was all he said. Though he did later add: “Be aware – you have no idea what the team and I were planning and how FOV slider might affect fairness with such a thing.” Some kind of competitive multiplayer mode, perhaps?

He then posted a poll to gauge how much people wanted a FOV slider in the game. The result was overwhelming: nearly three quarters of all poll responders chose the strongest affirmative answer – “FOV slider or GTFO!”

Borderlands 4 was released at the end of last week, but as we weren’t supplied with game-code ahead of the release, we had no review for you. We do now have a review in the works but, as we want to be thorough, it may take a few days.

Those years of Silksong memes were no joke: Even Borderlands 4 can’t escape its shadow after their first weekends on Steam

by admin September 16, 2025

The weekend after launch is often when games hit their all-time peak Steam concurrents (at least until a big sale or special update), and Borderlands 4 managed to hit 304,398 on Sunday, according to SteamDB’s record keeping.

It’s an impressive achievement for Gearbox’s $70 co-op shooter, but if it puts Borderlands 4 somewhere in the stratosphere, then Hollow Knight: Silksong must be mingling with the aurora borealis, having hit 587,150 concurrent Steam players on the Saturday after it launched.

Those numbers put Borderlands 4 at #46 on the list of all-time highest Steam concurrent peaks, just below Elden Ring Nightreign, and Silksong all the way up at #17, sandwiched between Apex Legends and Path of Exile 2.

Related articles

I don’t like to fixate too much on Steam concurrents as a measure of popularity, as they don’t tell the whole story, but they are one of few direct windows into what gamers are doing that we have, and this particular figure underlines just how colossal of a success Silksong has been.

The rest of the story in this case includes the detail that Silksong is much cheaper than Borderlands 4—$20 vs $70—which helps explain why it was able to attract a greater number of Steam players (and why Borderlands 4 is the one at the top of Steam’s best sellers chart, which is based on revenue). Silksong is also a game that should run on just about anything, including a Steam Deck, whereas Borderlands 4 has fairly demanding minimum specs and launched with frame rate and stuttering problems.

On the flip side, though, Silksong is available on Game Pass, while Borderlands 4 isn’t. Last we heard, Game Pass has more than 35 million subscribers. That’s 35 million people who can play Silksong without buying it on Steam, and the subscription service has in the past been blamed for limiting the retail success of games on it. Yet industry analyst GameDiscoverCo estimates that the 2D action platformer has sold 3.2 million copies on the platform so far.

Part of me thought that all those years of memey pining for Silksong—flooding the comments in every gaming showcase with demands for a trailer—were just a passionate but moderately-sized fanbase having some fun. It turns out there really was a Silksong army.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

Looking down on a behemoth like Borderlands from any vantage point is quite an achievement for an indie series. The first Hollow Knight saw 15 million copies sold, according to a recent Bloomberg report, which is obviously nothing to sneeze at, but 94 million copies of Borderlands games had been sold prior to Borderlands 4, according to Take-Two Interactive.

And the Hollow Knight fans were right to anticipate Silksong: We awarded the tough-as-nails indie metroidvania a 90% in our review.

We don’t yet have a review of Borderlands 4, but it’s on the way, and critics who received advanced copies have mostly liked it. In the meantime, we do have lots of Borderlands 4 guides to offer. (Don’t tell the cool kids with their bug game, but Borderlands 4 is more my thing, so that’s where my personal contribution to these numbers lies.)

Is Borderlands 4 the new Crysis? Official GPU setting recommendations peg 4K performance with the RTX 5090 at 60 FPS, with DLSS and frame generation enabled

by admin September 16, 2025

Video game publisher 2K Games has released an extensive list of recommended graphics settings for Borderlands 4 across Nvidia and AMD GPUs at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K. These presets are said to offer players a reliable baseline, something that many found missing right after the game’s launch last week.

The official requirements for Borderlands 4 highlight just how demanding the game is across GPU generations, and the results aren’t flattering by any means. If we look at Nvidia, the minimum requirements list the RTX 2070, which can barely scrape by at 1080p, managing just 30 FPS with DLSS upscaling, along with low settings for textures, shadows, and foliage. A smoother 60 FPS gaming experience at 1080p requires an RTX 3060 Ti. If you want to play the game smoothly at 1440p with 60 FPS, the RTX 3080 12GB is the minimum requirement, but not without DLSS and demanding texture features set to medium.

More settings have been listed by 2K Games for Nvidia GPUs and AMD GPUs.

You may like

On paper, the RTX 5090 stands out as the most powerful gaming graphics card available, and Borderlands 4 puts that muscle to good use. According to 2K’s recommendations, it’s the only GPU positioned to run Borderlands 4 at 4K (with DLSS and frame generation enabled) while pushing nearly every visual setting to the max. Notably, these recommendations only target a minimum of 60 FPS, which feels less than impressive for a flagship-grade GPU that costs upwards of $3,000.

On the other hand, the Radeon RX 5700 XT from AMD serves as an entry point for 1080p, although this can only be achieved using FSR and reduced settings for shadows and lighting to maintain frame rates at 60 FPS and above. As for mid-range GPUs like the RX 6700 XT and RX 7700 XT, they should be good enough at 1440p while maintaining much of the game’s visual quality. At the higher end, the RX 6950 XT and RX 7900 XTX push into 4K territory, but still rely on FSR in Balanced or Performance mode to deliver consistent performance.

AMD’s latest Radeon 9000 series is also part of the recommended list, with the latest RDNA 4 GPUs offering the best experience for Borderlands 4. The lineup benefits from FSR 4 and improved frame generation support, thus making the Radeon RX 9060 and 9060 XT suitable for 1440p, while the RX 9070 and 9070 XT are recommended to run the game at 4K / 60.

The release of these preset settings comes in the wake of Borderlands 4 drawing criticism for severe performance issues. Players have reportedly been running into all sorts of issues, ranging from low frame rates, stuttering, and crashes, even on top-tier graphics cards like the RTX 5090. While a 2.7GB day-one patch improved stability and fixed some crashes and errors, reports of inconsistent performance continue to surface. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford acknowledged the situation, noting that players with systems below spec or without SSDs would likely struggle.

Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox.

The recommended settings also highlight just how demanding the game truly is. Even with Nvidia’s latest RTX 50-series and AMD’s Radeon 9000-series GPUs, players are expected to lean on upscaling and frame generation to achieve smooth performance at higher resolutions. That in itself speaks volumes about the game’s hardware demands, underlying optimization issues, or likely both.

The Borderlands 4 PC Performance Fiasco, Explained

The Borderlands 4 PC Performance Fiasco, Explained

by admin September 15, 2025

Borderlands 4 launched last week to big numbers and mostly positive reviews on Steam. But there’s been a lot of chatter and debate online about the looter shooter’s performance. Some players aren’t happy that Borderlands 4 seemingly requires DLSS and frame generation to run decently, even on the highest-end hardware. Meanwhile, Gearbox co-founder and CEO Randy Pitchford has defended the game’s performance, calling it “pretty damn optimal,” and suggested people need to use the “tools” provided by the studio and accept some trade-offs.

On PC, many games can utilize real-time upscaling tech, like Nvidia’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR. Nvidia and others have also created tools that allow your GPU to fill in the gaps between real frames rendered by the game with frames generated using deep learning tech. When this kind of tech was first introduced about six years ago or so, players complained that DLSS and other tools made games look blurry, even if it led to some performance boosts. As DLSS and similar tech have improved, the images produced looked have better and better. Today, DLSS 4.0 can produce some truly sharp-looking frames and provide some big performance gains, assuming you have a powerful enough video card.

But some, myself included, have started to grow concerned that studios are building games around DLSS and other similar tech, and aren’t optimizing them in the way devs did in the past. When DLSS was introduced, it felt like a great tool for gamers who had a slightly older card but still wanted to play a newer game. It would let them squeeze out a bit more performance without shelling out for a pricey upgrade. Now it seems like newer games running on more advanced engines require users to turn on DLSS and frame gen to play. And so enters Borderlands 4, a game that has found itself at the center of this heated debate.

Shortly after Borderlands 4 launched, players on PC began to complain that the game didn’t run very well. Gearbox responded with some updates that, at least in my experience with the game on PC, helped a bit. The company also released a guide from Nvidia for how to optimize the game based on your GPU and settings. And while that helped some reach better performance on PC, many others, myself included, were struggling to get the game to run well on powerful hardware. I’m rocking a 5080, and even playing the game at 1080p on medium settings led to tons of FPS drops, even while trying to play at 60FPS. That all changed when I did as Gearbox and Nvidia suggest and turned on DLSS and frame gen. Now, I can run Borderlands 4 at a mostly locked 120 with most settings set to high and medium. It looks nice and plays fine, but many aren’t okay with a game in 2025 being unable to run on high-end hardware without some upscaling assistance.

Not helping matters is the fact that Randy Pitchford posted, as part of a recent and lengthy thread on Twitter, that people should use DLSS because it’s “great” and added: “The game was built to take advantage of it.” That, and a different part of the thread claiming it was acceptable for devs to focus on “default settings” reaching only 30FPS, didn’t go over well with a lot of PC gamers who specifically buy new parts and upgrade their rigs to achieve high framerates at high resolutions. For many, Pitchford’s claim that Borderlands 4 was developed to “take advantage” of DLSS was him confirming that it was built with the assumption that most users would use DLSS. And that, to some, sounds a lot like the game wasn’t properly optimized to run without help from DLSS and frame generation.

While I do agree that newer DLSS and frame gen tools are powerful and impressive, it feels weird that Borderlands 4, along with other games like Alan Wake 2, demand that even users with the highest-end hardware lean on upscaling tech to play at decent settings and historically popular framerates like 120. In a recent video, the tech experts over at Digital Foundry weren’t impressed with Borderlands 4 on PC, with one even saying: “[Borderlands 4] does seem to be running worse than usual for an Unreal Engine 5 game. It is below where it seems like it should be given how other games using this engine perform.”

Pitchford has promised on Twitter that more updates are coming, including some more improvements to how the game runs on PC. He’s also been spending a lot of time online helping people improve how Borderlands 4 runs and claiming that performance issues are not as widespread as some might make you believe. Personally, I just miss when games could run on a high-end computer packed with powerful hardware without needing four different upscaling tools. And it seems I’m not alone.

Gearbox tries to prove to Borderlands 4 players that the game is optimised, actually, but just shows it’s a load of Claptrap

by admin September 15, 2025

Borderlands 4 is getting lambasted everywhere online for just how poorly it performs for many players on PC. It’s all anyone is talking about in the game’s Steam reviews and elsewhere.

The debacle has certainly given the game a certain image, and developer Gearbox clearly isn’t happy with this current state of affairs. Unfortunately, the developer has decided to respond to the complaints in a strange way that ends up actually undermining its point.

The saga of Borderlands 4’s performance troubles on PC is a very common one. It’s a modern AAA game that performs worse than you expect it to given the hardware it’s running on. In this case, too, the visuals aren’t impressive enough to warrant how heavy the game is.

Borderlands 4 also runs on Unreal Engine 5, which has itself become something of a punching bag. Anytime a game that uses it runs into technical issues, players are quick to blame the engine. Add Denuvo DRM to the mix and the game really has the full package.

Gearbox’s solution to all that negative feedback – which includes many hours of content from top tech YouTubers – was to release ideal settings for some of the most popular Nvidia and AMD GPUs on the market, which it suggests players use.

There are two massive guides – one for each GPU brand – that list every single in-game setting, and the recommended value for each for 1080p, 1440p, and 4K. It’s a bit of an overkill, considering the initial settings released for Borderlands 4 ahead of its launch were nowhere near as detailed. These updated guides, on the other hand, offer framerate targets, resolution, and whether or not upscaling is required to achieve each one.

Unfortunately, as detailed as they may be, the two lists only serve to prove players’ points that Borderlands 4 simply isn’t optimised well enough to take advantage of the hardware it’s running on. The reason is that upscaling is required for almost every single one.

In fact, for most of the higher-end GPUs, achieving a framerate beyond 60fps requires frame generation, which the two guides clearly state. Frame generation, if you’re unfamiliar, is similar to motion smoothing, in that it interpolates the frame buffer to add more virtual frames, increasing input lag.

Frame generation is also generally recommended for players who can already reach above 60fps comfortably, as its drawbacks become much more serious when your hardware/settings combination can’t reliably achieve 60fps without it.

The guides only really serve to shift the blame onto players, who are clearly advised to temper their expectations (and their settings), not to mention rely on frame generation to achieve acceptable results regardless of how powerful their GPUs are.

Borderlands 4 update aims to “improve stability for a wide range of PCs”, but comes without proper patch notes

by admin September 15, 2025

Borderlands 4 developers Gearbox have chucked more wrenches at the shooter’s PC performance over the weekend, following issues that’ve landed it mixed Steam review fortunes since launch last week. However, if you’re looking for patch notes, you’re gonna be a bit disappointed. Ah well, at least there are essay-length Randy Pitchford Twitter threads to scroll through if you’re partial to someone waffling about how the game runs.

Initially, Gearbox’s response to the PC performance problems was to publish a massive recommended settings table. Our James had a go at seeing if following it made a tangible difference. While you can and should read his full testing write-up , the short version is that the stuttering many players have reported wasn’t magically wiped away by that guidance.

Cue this latest update, which as Gearbox wrote on Steam, aims to “help improve stability for a wide range of PCs”. Unlike most patches, they declined to get into any nitty-gritty specifics beyond that. There’s a warning that whenever you change your graphics settings, it can take up to 15 minutes for your shaders to recompile, as well as a reposting of those optimisation guides for Nvidia and AMD hardware.

Aside from those, the studio added: “We’re continuing to read your feedback, planning additional updates and will have more details to come”. So, no bullet-pointed patch notes to illustrate exactly how the update’s gone about trying to make things run in a more stable fashion, which seems a strange choice and has understandably raised eyebrows among some players.

Who needs full patch notes, however, when you’ve got Gearbox CEO yammering into the void about Borderlands 4 on the socials. He has at least emphasised that the studio are putting in “significant work on PC performance”. Though, that did come midway through an essay-length thread that began with the declaration: “Every PC gamer must accept the reality of the relationship between their hardware and what the software they are running is doing.”

Every PC gamer must accept the reality of the relationship between their hardware and what the software they are running is doing.

After shouting at anyone who’s assumed that PCs between minimum and recommended specs “can achieve all of extremely high frame rate, maximum/ultra features, and extremely high resolution”, the tweetman asserted that “there are a few real issues, but they are affecting a very, very small percentage of users.”

In other Borderlands 4 launch-related news, publishers Take-Two took the opportunity to reiterate they aren’t in the “spyware” business via the game’s terms of service agreement. That followed some concern over the contents of such Take-Two docs in terms of data collection earlier this year, with some older Borderlandses briefly being review-bombed.
