Borderlands 4 Standard Edition Confirmed To Cost $70

Gearbox has opened pre-orders for Borderlands 4, confirming a $69.99 price for the Standard Edition. This news alleviates fan concern that the upcoming shooter would retail at $80 and follows CEO Randy Pitchford’s controversial comment last month that “real fans” would find a way to purchase the game at that price.

The worry over Borderlands 4’s price stemmed from an exchange on X with Randy Pitchford on May 13 where a fan told him the game “better not be 80 dollars.” Pitchford responded by saying the decision was “Not my call”, then added the following:

“If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen. My local game store had Starflight for Sega Genesis for $80 in 1991 when I was just out of high school working minimum wage at an ice cream parlor in Pismo Beach and I found a way to make it happen.”

Pitchford’s comment attracted criticism from those who took this as him implying that players who couldn’t afford to pay $80 are not true fans. It also fueled speculation that Borderlands 4 would indeed follow the growing trend set by Mario Kart World of retailing at the higher price point.

Following the backlash, Pitchford addressed his comment by sharing a clip from a PAX East developer panel (which occurred before Pitchford’s controversial X post), where he elaborated on Borderlands 4’s then-potential price by speaking on the current realities of video game development budgets and pricing.

“It’s an interesting time, right?” says Pitchford during the Q&A session. “On one level, we’ve got a competitive marketplace where the people who make those choices want to sell as many units as possible and they want to be careful about people who are price-sensitive. So there’s some folks who don’t want to see prices go up, even the ones deciding what the prices are. There’s other folks accepting the reality that game budgets are increasing and there’s tariffs for the retail packaging and it’s getting gnarly out there, you guys. Borderlands 4 has more than twice the development budget than Borderlands 3. More than twice. So the truth is, I don’t know what the price is going to be.”

He then added, “As artists, we want everybody to have it. We want to make it as easy as possible for everybody to enjoy what we’re creating.”

In addition to the $70 Standard Edition of Borderlands 4, Gearbox is also offering a Deluxe Edition for $99.99 and a Super Deluxe Edition for $129.99. Each version contains a bevy of extra content, and you can read more details about what each edition entails on the game’s website. 

Borderlands 4 will launch on September 12 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. A Switch 2 version is also planned for sometime this year.

After weeks of online discourse, drama, apologies, and bad posts, the price tag for the next major Borderlands game has finally been revealed by publisher 2K Games. Turns out, Borderlands 4 won’t cost $80 after all. Instead, the looter shooter sequel is launching with a $70 label.

On June 16, pre-orders went live for Borderlands 4. The massive-looking RPG FPS, which was announced last year, is set to arrive on consoles and PC on September 12, nearly two weeks earlier than originally planned. The standard edition of the game will cost $70, as confirmed by 2K in a press release. But because this is a modern video game released by a large publisher, there are two more versions available as well. The $100 Deluxe Edition comes with extra cosmetic goodies and post-launch DLC. And the $120 Super Deluxe Edition includes all of what’s in the Deluxe Edition as well as access to future Story Packs that will include new playable vault hunters.

Last month, the price of Borderlands 4 became a hot topic because of Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford. On May 9, after Nintendo and Xbox had announced $80 video games like Mario Kart World, Pitchford told fans at PAX East that a price was going to be announced soon. He also claimed to have no idea what the price would be, but assured people that the game would be worth it.

Then, on May 20, Pitchford really stepped in it. When a fan asked him on social media about a possible $80 price tag on Borderlands 4, he infamously replied: “If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen.” This went over poorly with the internet. A few days later he said he didn’t mean to sound like an asshole. A week later, he posted a 573-word tweet apologizing and explaining that he just meant that Borderlands 4 would be fine even with the higher price tag, and that he didn’t intend to set off a firestorm of controversy and discourse.

That brings us to today, where 2K has finally confirmed that Borderlands 4 is only $70. After all that hoopla and online drama, it turns out the game is going to cost what nearly every other AAA video game in 2025 costs: $70, plus tax. Was any of that worth it in the end? Not really. But hey, at least Borderlands 4 isn’t going to hold the game hostage and force you to pay a ransom fee to play a few days early. That’s nice!

Borderlands 4, the latest entry in Gearbox Software’s popular looter shooter franchise, is available to pre-order now for $70, a good $10 less than many assumed it would cost. The game’s price first came into question when its September 12 release date was announced without pre-order details, and Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford suggested that whether the game came with a $80 price tag was out of his hands.

Pitchford put his foot in his mouth in a thread on X sharing a behind-the-scenes video about bringing Borderlands 4 to the Switch 2. A fan replied to the video asking Pitchford to not charge $80 for the game, to which Pitchford responded, “A) Not my call. B) If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen.”

Naturally, that came off as a bit glib to anyone surprised by the sudden emergence of $80 games following the release of Mario Kart World. Pitchford didn’t exactly double-down next, but at a PAX East panel later in May, he also didn’t deny the game would have a higher price, noting that “Borderlands 4 has more than twice the development budget than Borderlands 3.“

The official pre-order information settles things: the game is not going the way of Mario Kart. The Standard Edition of Borderlands 4 costs $70 and comes with free Vault Hunter, weapon and drone skins if you pre-order. If you step up to the $100 Deluxe Edition, you get even more skins and a “Bounty Pack Bundle” that includes exclusive areas and weapons. For the $130 Super Deluxe Edition, you get all of that plus the “Vault Hunter Pack,” which includes the game’s two story DLC packs and new playable characters. A $70 game is not a $60 game, but if price is your biggest concern, it’s better than $80.

Gearbox plans to show off more of Borderlands 4‘s story and gameplay at Borderlands Fan Fest on June 21. The game is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X / S and PC on September 12. The Switch 2 release is scheduled for 2025, too, and Gearbox plans to share more information about it at a later date.

Borderlands 4 special editions and price confirmed (and it won’t cost $80)

With Borderlands 4’s September release inching closer, publisher Take-Two has announced pricing and a variety of special editions for the shooter. And there’s good news for anyone worried an $80 price tag might be on the cards following all that recent hoo-ha; the standard edition does not, it turns out, cross Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford’s “real fan” threshold.


Pitchford, of course, raised more than a few eyebrows last month, when he implied potential customers not willing to spend $80 on Borderlands 4 (amid a hypothetical discussion of its price tag) weren’t ‘real fans’. His statement – that “real fans” would find a way to get their hands on a copy of the game, even if it came with a $80 price tag – did not go down well, and Pitchford later attempted to justify his comments in a longer video. Unfortunately, he then followed that up with another ill-conceived social media post irritated fans quickly branded “tone-deaf”.


But it turns out Pitchford could probably have avoided needlessly annoying the Borderlands community if he’d just held fire a little longer. Take-Two has now confirmed Borderlands 4 will, in fact, cost $70 for the standard edition of the game – but the full story is a little more complicated given regional pricing, variations in platform pricing, and the usual scrum of special editions offering various strands of Borderlands stuff.


PC is where you’ll pick up Borderlands 4 cheapest; the standard edition costs £59.99 on Steam and Epic, and you’ll be paying £69.99 for the same version on Xbox Series X/S and PS5. That then climbs to £89.99 for the Deluxe Edition (which I suppose is now technically the Real Fan Edition given the price) and £119.99 for the Super (Fan?) Deluxe Edition.


And in case you’re wondering what the difference is, the Deluxe Edition features the game, the Bounty Pack Bundle (which includes four post-launch DLC packs promising new areas, missions, and bosses), plus Vault Cards containing more challenges and rewards, new gear and weapons, four new vehicles, Vault Hunter cosmetics, and the Firehawk’s Fury Weapon Skin.


The Super Deluxe Edition, meanwhile, includes all the above, plus the Ornate Order Pack (featuring Vault Hunter Skins, four Vault Hunter Heads and four Vault Hunter Bodies), and the Vault Hunter Pack. This latter includes two post-launch Story Packs, each bringing a new Vault Hunter, new story and side missions, new map regions, new gear and weapons, plus additional Vault Hunter and ECHO-4 cosmetics.

Borderlands 4 Post-Launch Plans Include New Vault Hunters, But They Won’t Be Free

Borderlands 4 developer Gearbox has outlined its post-launch plans for the game, which include new Vault Hunters. These new additions to the roster won’t be free, however, as they’ll be added to the game through the $130 Super Deluxe Edition. Gearbox has not yet revealed if they’ll be available as standalone purchases, but it’s likely that the new Story Packs or an upgrade can be purchased for the Standard or Deluxe Edition of Borderlands 4.

In addition to the new Story Packs adding more Vault Hunters, these will also throw in an entirely new region of Kairos with extended narrative content, Gearbox said in a blog post. Additional storylines and side missions will be included alongside various cosmetics and Bounty Packs that will feature “more tightly focused content” for players.

Each Bounty Pack will feature a new area with fresh missions alongside a unique boss fight, loot, a new type of personalized Digirunner vehicle, and a Vault Card with its own set of rewards for completing certain challenges. Bounty Packs will be included in the Deluxe and Super Deluxe Editions of the game.

The previous mainline Borderlands games have had four post-launch expansions. The first Borderlands game introduced fan-favorite character Moxxi in the Underdome Riot expansion, Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep from Borderlands 2 was critically acclaimed, and Borderlands 3 brought back everyone’s favorite villain Handsome Jack–kind of–for a heist story.

Paywalling new Vault Hunters behind post-launch content isn’t unusual either for the series, as characters like Gaige, Krieg, Handsome Jack’s doppelganger Timothy, and Aurelia were all available as DLC or as preorder bonuses. The only exception to the rule is Borderlands 3, as all four playable Vault Hunters were available at launch and no additional characters were introduced as post-launch DLC.

Borderlands 3 also had a lot of free DLC added to it over the years, with one of the more notable examples being a block-shifting puzzle game that helped real-world scientists organize data. Millions of players took part in this project, and they were officially recognized as scientific contributors for their help. Borderlands 4 launches on September 12 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2, and ahead of its arrival, Gearbox has been sharing a few more details on the game.

We’ve already seen some of the big co-op changes that Gearbox has been working on, more details on the new Vault Hunters have been revealed, and the loot system has also been overhauled.

This fall, Borderlands 4 is bringing the mainline franchise to the current console generation. With the game just a few months away from release, the development team at Gearbox Software has created a new YouTube show, Beyond the Borderlands, to chronicle its progress. And the first episode focuses on what it takes to create a memorable vault hunter.

“We want them to be somebody that players and ourselves can relate to,” explained art director Adam May. “A comic book [hero] is frequently a good reference point for us. You want to get something that feels familiar and play as somebody [you] actually want to be in real life. It starts with the ideation of trying to define and decipher what kind of fantasies we want to build for players.”

The team also explained that pitches for new vault hunters come in from all over the company, and sometimes character pitches are combined into new combinations. According to lead character designer Nick Thurston, “The guiding principle of Borderlands, just in general, is just to be badass. The abilities, the gear, everything; it all has to be the things that our community expects. They can be from any walk of life. They can bring anything to the table, but ultimately they have to be cool and they have to be fun to play.”

The price for Borderlands 4 hasn’t been announced yet, but Gearbox Software boss Randy Pitchford caused some controversy when he suggested that “real fans” will find a way to come up with $80 to buy it, if it costs that much. Pitchford subsequently walked that statement back a bit.

Borderlands 4 will hit PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on September 12. A port will also be released on Nintendo Switch 2 at a later date.

With Borderlands 4 nearly here, a community of archivists are racing to revive a dead Borderlands MMO

Video game archival is a noble act, especially in this day and age where always-online games vanish when their servers are turned off, or when niche but beloved games disappear alongside the services they’re locked to. There are libraries of indies locked to Apple Arcade, the PS Vita, and elsewhere, never to be played again; and then there’s Borderlands Online.

Borderlands Online, a Chinese free-to-play MMO developed by Shanda Games, was canceled in 2015 when the studio was shut down. It’s somewhat of a white whale for archivists, one of those projects so far out of reach as to create a sort of mythology around it. That is until recently, when a collective effort to revive a playable build has picked up steam.

To find out more I spoke to content creator, game developer, and data miner EpicNNG, the face of this archival effort to find out how exactly the project came about, the hurdles in doing so, and their hopes for the future of Borderlands Online.

“It really ‘started’ in late April. I just randomly said to my friend Let’s just do it. What if it’s out there?” EpicNNG tells me through Twitter DMs. “It was actually funny because we thought it’d be impossible – but they found a public build of it in less than 20 minutes. It didn’t feel real. From here we knew what had to be done.”

Epic’s friend and fellow Borderlands Online enthusiast found this public build on a long abandoned Chinese website, filled with dead links and viruses. From there the process of digging through the files began in earnest. Major milestones were posted online, including first breaching onto the login screen, running into an infinite login screen following character creation, and the discovery of Counter Strike map Dust 2 in the files, of all things.

Over the course of months, progress was being made, but it was slow. So why dedicate so much time to such a project? Why this game, of all things?

“I’ve always wanted to do this.” EpicNNG states. “I am a superfan of this franchise. I’ll do anything I can to get my hands on this kind of thing. I won’t stop at Borderlands Online. Borderlands started my addiction to video games, and wanting to be a developer myself.”

Even with this fanhood setting the wind to their sails, that didn’t stop the project from running into roadblocks. Borderlands Online, obviously, hasn’t got dedicated servers online. There was that virus-laden website mentioned earlier, bizarre error messages popping up that had to be bypassed through trial and error too.

EpicNNG sums up the experience as such: “It has been incredibly challenging. If you don’t know what you’re doing it can feel like trying to escape a maze blindfolded. I eventually reached my skill ceiling, and that realization was tough to accept.”

“My focus is on Borderlands 4, but opportunities like this don’t come up very often. To a Borderlands fan, this previously truly felt like the definition of “lost” media. Now I have the opportunity to let them play it for the first time, no matter how good/bad it is. How can I pass this up?”

At which point, a lengthy call-to-action was uploaded to YouTube. This roughly 30-minute video contains a detailed summary of how much work the small team had done, multiple extensive explanations that the project was not breaching 2K or Gearbox’s copyright, and how there was no intention to profit from releasing a build.

This video concludes on a request for help, with the initial team running into a wall of work they doubted could be cracked open before Borderlands 4 neared release and lawyers would be more aggressive with takedowns on such projects.

“I’m incredibly worried about this. The last thing I want is for this to turn into a legal battle.” EpicNNG explains. “I am ready to cease development the moment they tell me to. I’m a fan of the franchise, it is not my intent to cause harm. I just want people to see Borderlands through my lens. I truly love the franchise in the most unapologetic way.”

This interview was only conducted with express permission of EpicNNG, before which the risk of further publicity on the project was laid out plainly. But with the release of his video, EpicNNG believes the build may not end up playable without additional attention, and the extra hands it could provide.

This decision has borne fruit, according to EpicNNG. Following the release of their video, players flocked in to help out where they could. “Since I came out with this news, I have had nearly 100 people reach out through various methods to let me know they’ll be working on this project. It’s a feeling I can’t even describe. I even had people who have never played a Borderlands game before become interested in this project. In a way, it’s growing the franchise to an extent.”

There’s still no word on the exact progress of this large-scale community effort, but the hope according to EpicNNG is that a build will be playable before July. “My hope is that a playable build will exist before July. I cannot speak for the progress of other teams however, since I have no idea where they’re at with their efforts. Maybe they’ll beat me to it? I look forward to seeing it.”

The reason this effort by a dedicated collection of Borderlands fans and preservationists is worth highlighting is clear, at least to me. Borderlands Online may have very well been a game you’ve never heard of until today, and if we’re being honest, there’s a good chance it wouldn’t have rocked the world if it ever came out.

But it is history. It’s a small blurred segment of the Borderlands timeline, a series that has persisted for over 15 years. It’s a reminder of an earlier desire by 2K to push into the Chinese market, long before we saw the development and purchasing power of that region made manifest with games like Black Myth Wukong. It’s a reminder of an age where making an MMO was the trend, even if the vast majority of them never met the aspirations of the companies building them.

And for those putting in the work like EpicNNG, it’s a way of experiencing a series that’s close to their heart. “I just want to play it, and say I have played it. I don’t particularly think the game will be very good, but it will be a fun and exciting experience not only to preserve a project like this, but to then experience it with friends whilst we wait for Borderlands 4. I hope this project brings people together.”

Borderlands 2 is getting review bombed on Steam despite being given away for free

Borderlands 2, one of the highest-rated and best-selling games of all time, is getting review bombed on Steam almost 13 years after its original release. And when it’s being given away for free, no less.

Currently, it’s a free pickup on Steam until June 8, 2025, but players are coming back to the Steam page just to give it negative reviews even if they’ve got hundreds of hours in the game.

However, no new content has been added. The last update was years ago, right before Borderlands 3 came out. So, what’s happening here?

Due to some changes in Take-Two’s End User License Agreement in regards to how much information they can collect from players, people are rebelling en masse to show their displeasure with them now having their information collected. However, all of this panic may have been over nothing.

Is Borderlands 2 spyware? EULA change explained

What exactly changed in the EULA that has players so mad? Well, Take-Two’s updated agreement applies retroactively to all their games, and has clauses about banning players who implement mods and cheats (something co-op parties often do in BL2), as well as the ways in which your information is collected and used.

This has resulted in mass backlash, with almost 5000 recent negative reviews on Steam at the time of writing.

However, Take-Two’s EULA is fairly standard in games industry terms, and the agreement lays out plainly what users’ information is used for:

  • Business Purposes: Provide the Services and support; fulfill orders and requests; improve the Services and our business; develop new products and services; enhance your experience on the Services; protect the security for our users, employees, facilities, and Services; and develop internal marketing and demographic studies.
  • Commercial Purposes: Market and advertise our and our business partners’ products and services; send you promotional materials; and administer promotional activities or events.
  • We also use your information as permitted by law.

This is what the vast majority of companies have outlined in their own EULAs, with the use of user information being fairly standardized in the industry and beyond. For instance, most web browsers have a very similar function, which is how things like AdSense work to send you ads for products you may be interested in.

Additionally, Borderlands 2 has no form of anti-cheat or any built-in rules about whether or not you can modify the game or use Cheat Engine and other software to alter it. Even if users could get banned over it, there’s no way for the game to detect it.

While this may mean that Borderlands 4 ends up having some sort of anti-cheat and may bar users from using mods in that title, that doesn’t retroactively apply to Borderlands 2 because of these changes.

So, despite Steam review bombing, it’s safe to say that Borderlands 2 isn’t spyware. If it, or any other Take-Two games for that matter, were used in that way due to this universal EULA change for several of their titles, they’d have been removed from Steam almost immediately as that’s against the platform’s TOS and also generally illegal.

Borderlands 2 is free to keep on Steam and it’s getting review-bombed at the same time because of, uh, the EULA?

Borderlands 2 is free to keep on Steam until June 8, and if you think people are happy about that, well sir, you are wrong. They are in fact madder than hell, and they are expressing their displeasure in the time-honored way of gamers: With a good old-fashioned review bombing.

Borderlands 2 is an older game, having come out in 2012, but it’s also widely regarded as the best game in the series. We gave it a 90% score in our review, calling it a “satisfying and tactically interesting shooter, with great missions and excitingly random guns.”

Right now it’s totally free, for keeps as I mentioned, and it’s on Steam, the online store that people actually like. So what could possibly be the issue?

It’s not, as you might reasonably think, because people are mad about something Randy Pitchford said—although I suppose that might actually be it for some people. The big problem, though, is that Take-Two recently changed its EULA, which numerous negative Steam reviews claim turn its games into “spyware.”

This is actually not a new phenomenon. As we reported in May, it all seemingly started in March when a Borderlands YouTuber by the name of Hellfire posted a video entitled “Take-Two Spies on Borderlands Players,” highlighting policy changes made by Take-Two earlier in the year. The video turns on two primary complaints: That Take-Two collects personal information like name, username, phone number, IP address, and operating system, and a clause that some say could be used to ban mods or the people who use them.

In the wake of that and subsequent videos, which drove even more strident claims about Take-Two’s underhanded intentions, review bombs fell across the entire Borderlands series on Steam. Eventually it subsided, as these things do, but it flared up again with Borderlands 2 going free: 738 negative reviews have been posted so far today alone, which is a lot for a 13-year-old videogame.

So that’s where it stands: Borderlands 2 is free on Steam and that’s triggered a round of review bombing for unrelated reasons that have dragged the recent user rating down to “mostly negative,” and if you think that’s odd for such a highly regarded shooter, well, now you know why. Grab it while you can.
