EA cancels Black Panther and shuts down Cliffhanger Games

by admin May 29, 2025

EA has canceled its Black Panther game and shuttered Cliffhanger Games.

Cliffhanger was only announced in July 2023 after it revealed its first project would be a game based upon Marvel’s Black Panther franchise.

As reported by IGN, EA Entertainment president Laura Miele wrote to staff earlier today, stating the closure comes as EA “sharpens our focus and put[s] our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.”

EA declined to comment on the closure, or confirm how many jobs have been affected, although IGN believes that as well as closing Cliffhanger and canceling Black Panther, staff on its central and mobile teams have also been impacted by redundancies.

“These decisions are hard,” Miele told staff. “They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them – including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles.”

According to IGN, Miele’s correspondence intimates EA is now focusing on a handful of its owned IP, chiefly Apex Legends, Battlefield, Skate, and The Sims, although Miele reportedly assured staff the company was still committed to BioWare’s upcoming Mass Effect game, Motive’s Iron Man title, and its upcoming Star Wars: Jedi project, in addition to its mobile portfolio.

Less than a month ago, EA cut 300 jobs. The redundancies chiefly impacted developers at Apex Legend developer Respawn and EA’s Experiences team.

EA’s Black Panther game reportedly cancelled and studio closed, resulting in more layoffs

by admin May 29, 2025

EA has reportedly cancelled its single-player Black Panther game and closed the studio behind it, resulting in an unspecified number of layoffs.

EA Entertainment president Laura Miele shared the news in an email to staff seen by IGN, insisting today’s Black Panther cancellation, the closure of Cliffhanger Games, and the resulting job losses – as well the recent cancellation of other projects, including an unannounced Titanfall game at Respawn – would help the publisher “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.”

EA declined to comment on the number of employees impacted by its latest round of layoffs when approached by IGN (these will reportedly also affect members of the publisher’s mobile and central divisions), but the website says it understands fewer individuals will be affected compared to the 300 job cuts recently made across Respawn and several other teams.

“These decisions are hard,” Miele wrote. “They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them – including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles.”

EA announced its Black Panther title back in 2023, confirming it would be handled by its then-new Cliffhanger Games studio in collaboration with Marvel Games. Although few details were shared at the time, it was described as a third-person title set in an “expansive and reactive” version of Wakanda, and still “early in development”. Nothing has been seen of the project since then, but a job listing in 2024 indicated it would be an open-world game.

Black Panther’s cancellation follows EA CEO Andrew Wilson’s comments last year that the publisher would be moving away from “future licensed IP”. And while Miele insisted EA will continue to invest in developer Motive’s Iron Man project and Respawn’s third Star Wars: Jedi game, she suggested the focus will now be on a small number of its own franchises, specifically Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends. That’s in addition to Bioware’s next Mass Effect.

Notably, EA also recently announced it was ending its licensing partnership with the World Rally Championship and “pausing development” on all future rally games – a move which resulted in an undisclosed number of additional layoffs at Codemasters.

A second Black Panther project – publisher Skydance Games’ Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, which is being penned by Uncharted writer Amy Hennig – was recently delayed into next year.

EA cancels Black Panther game, closes developer Cliffhanger Games

by admin May 29, 2025

Electronic Arts has canceled its Black Panther game and closed down developer Cliffhanger Games. IGN, which first reported the news, cites an internal email in which EA Entertainment president Laura Miele notified staff about the changes made to “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.”

“These decisions are hard,” Miele wrote, per IGN. “They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them — including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles.”

The email continues, detailing that EA will now shift resources to the historically successful Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends series. Miele also said that a game based on Iron Man is still in the works, as is the third entry in Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi series and BioWare’s next entry in Mass Effect.

EA previously laid off around 300 employees across both Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Art’s Fan Care teams in April 2025. Variety reported at the time that EA had effectively canceled the next Titanfall game and another unnamed game in “early-stage incubation.”

Polygon has contacted EA for comment and will update this story with any further information we receive.

Black Panther was first announced by Marvel Games, EA, and Cliffhanger Games in 2023. The game was part of a three-game deal that Marvel Games reached with EA that also includes an Iron Man game developed by Motive. EA established the Seattle-based Cliffhanger Games in 2023 to work on the Black Panther game, which coincided with the 57th anniversary of the hero. The studio, led by former Monolith executive Kevin Stephens, was staffed by developers known for working on series like Halo, God of War, and Call of Duty.

According to a Marvel press release, the Black Panther game was set to be “an original, third-person, single-player Black Panther game…that empowers players to experience what it is like to take on the mantle of Wakanda’s protector, the Black Panther.”

EA cancels Black Panther game and closes studio developing it

by admin May 28, 2025

EA is cancelling its Black Panther game and closing the studio creating it, Cliffhanger Games, as part of a larger round of layoffs at the company, IGN reports. The third-person action-adventure game was originally announced in July 2023 as one of several Marvel projects being developed at EA studios.

IGN writes that a smaller number of people are being laid off than the previous round of cuts that impacted Titanfall developer Respawn, but EA is still eliminating roles outside of Cliffhanger, including people on the publisher’s “mobile and central teams.” EA is reportedly telling staff that the layoffs are a way to “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.”

As of right now, those “opportunities” include an Iron Man game in development at EA Motive, the next Star Wars Jedi game from Respawn, and new entries in a few key franchises, like The Sims, Battlefield, Skate and Apex Legends. Beyond that, the company has EA Sports and the next Mass Effect game, though Bioware has gone through multiple rounds of layoffs since 2023, so there’s uncertainty there, too. In a similar way to how it approached Bioware’s restructuring, IGN reports that EA is trying to find roles for at least some Cliffhanger Games staff in other parts of the company.

Engadget has contacted EA for comment and will update this article if we hear back.

EA growing disinterest in licensed games as been public since at least February 2024, when CEO Andrew Wilson announced that the company was “moving away from development of future licensed IP that we do not believe will be successful in our changing industry.” The company recently announced a new strategy game using the Star Wars license — Star Wars Zero Company — but that seems more like an outlier than the norm.

EA’s Black Panther game wasn’t the only project featuring the character — Amy Hennig’s Marvel 19943: Rise of Hydra hasn’t been cancelled yet — but it does seems strange the company gave up so easily. Black Panther made over $1.3 billion during its original run in theaters. It seems entirely possible the same audience that enjoyed the movie would show up for a new game featuring their favorite Marvel character.

The 8TB WD Black SN850X PCIe Gen4 SSD is now just $589 at Amazon

by admin May 25, 2025

Just because you’re on a budget doesn’t mean you can’t get high performance and plenty of storage capacity from your SSD. Today, we’ve come across an offer on the WD_Black SN850X 8TB SSD. This high-spec PCIe Gen4 gaming SSD usually goes for around $639, but right now it’s available for just $589. This is close to the lowest price we’ve ever seen for the SSD, by about $10 (USD).

This offer is for the edition that comes with a bundled heatsink. While we haven’t reviewed the 8TB model, we did get our hands on a WD_Black SN850X for review. In general, we loved the experience and gave it a rating of four out of five stars. You can see how this M.2 SSD compares to some of our other favorites in our list of best gaming SSDs.

This discount is for the 8TB model, but it comes in smaller capacities, as well, including 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB models. All the drives in this line feature an M.2 2280 form factor and are compatible with the PCIe Gen4 x4 standard. The 8TB edition can reach read and write speeds as high as 7,200 MB/s and 6,600 MB/s, respectively.

Amazon’s offer is on the edition with an integrated heatsink for cooling. The purchase is supported by a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty from Western Digital. This warranty voids if the drive reaches 4,800 TBW. However, because the SSD is sold through Amazon, you also get to take advantage of Amazon’s 30-day return policy.

This deal is among a few this weekend to lead us into Memorial Day sales on Monday. It’s not clear when the offer is set to expire. In the meantime, check out the WD_Black 8TB SN850X SSD product page at Amazon for more information and purchase options.

When is the next double XP weekend in Black Ops 6?

by admin May 23, 2025

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 turns back the clock with classic Prestige mode, where XP and leveling up fast are more important than ever. And that means double XP weekends are key.

The harsh reality of classic Prestige sets in once you enter, and everything gets reset to level one. It’s a bummer each time it happens, but that just means it’s time to have fun unlocking everything all over again in the latest CoD.

The fun settles down once you realize you’re missing your loadouts and weapons, so it’s time to level up as fast as possible. Thankfully, double XP weekends in BO6 are a thing, and they’re the perfect time to maximize your XP gains and burn through a Prestige over the course of a few days with lots of gaming.

Here’s when the next double XP weekend is in BO6 so you can plan accordingly.

Call of Duty’s double XP weekends happen every so often throughout the year. They usually take place during holidays, after the release of new content, and towards the end of seasons, whenever the XP grind is most important as players aim to finish their battle passes.

The next double XP weekend starts on Friday, May 23, at 11am CT, and is likely to end on Monday, May 26 at the same time. The event features double XP (player level) and double weapon XP for a few days.

A double XP weekend is coming soon. Screenshot by Dot Esports

Even though double XP weekends are only a few short days whenever they are live, make sure not to burn yourself out on the CoD grind. Another double XP weekend should be coming shortly, so pace yourself and have fun while you can.

Remember, no double XP weekend is worth it if you don’t have the will or desire to play. Prestige Master will come in due time.

Double XP start and end times

Double XP weekends begin at 9am PT / 11am CT / 12pm ET / 4pm GMT on a Thursday or Friday, then coming to an end on the following Monday at the same times. However, double XP weekends are often extended, particularly if there are server issues.

The double XP event beginning on May 23 lines up perfectly with the final weekend of CoD season three—so it’s a great time to grind your Prestige, level up your weapons, and earn the remaining unlocked items in your battle pass before heading into season four.

Double XP weekends are the best time to play BO6 to make the grind through Prestige levels much faster, but twice the XP is only the start. There are other ways to maximize your XP gains during these special weekends, like these:

  • Spam tacticals like concussion, flash, and decoy grenades, along with Scorestreaks like UAV and Counter-UAV, for extra assists and points.
  • Use Dispatcher and Bank Roll perks for easy Scorestreaks and better score.
  • Save up Mastery Badges to unlock during double XP.
  • Play small maps and fast-paced respawn modes (Face Off, Stakeout 24/7, etc.)
  • For less effort, zone out and casually play Zombies for XP.
  • Complete daily challenges every day that double XP is live.

Philips Hue Indoor Smart LED Lightstrip Kit Is Way Cheaper Than It Was on Black Friday on Amazon

by admin May 20, 2025

The right lighting can totally transform a space. Whether it’s to add mood lighting or to match up with what you’re watching to make for a more immersive experience, lights can change things in ways you might not expect. Of course, they can make things brighter when you don’t have any light to go by, too. And if you’re looking for flexible lighting to add to your home or maybe even just your living room, strip lighting is the way to go.

Right now, you can get the 16-foot Philips Hue Indoor Solo Lightstrip Base Kit for just $55, down from its usual price of $90. That’s $35 off and a discount of 39%.

See at Amazon

Flexible lighting at an affordable price

This 16-foot lightstrip delivers up to 1,700 lumens of brightness, providing awesome illumination for various settings. Its RGBWW LEDs ensure a wide range of color options, allowing you to customize the hue and intensity to match your mood or activity.

All the lighting has a silicone sleeve covering it, so it’s more durable and easier to manipulate. And it works just like a regular strip you’d cut of paper. You just trim it to how much you want and stick it to a clean surface. Then plug it in. You can add it to your TV, to walls, and a number of different places and it’ll stay there as long as you want it.

You can control the lighting with the Philips Hue app, which gives you over 60 preset scenes and the ability to create custom lighting schedules. For those who prefer voice commands, the lightstrip is compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit, providing hands-free operation.

While the Solo Lightstrip functions effectively on its own, integrating it with the Hue Bridge (sold separately) unlocks additional features. This includes the ability to control up to 50 lights and accessories, set up automations, and manage your lighting remotely, enhancing the overall smart home experience.

For just $55, you’ve got a lot of flexibility in terms of where you can put the lighting, how much you cut, what color you use, and much more. It’s much easier to use than a regular lamp, and you can make sure everything stays where it should. If you want to add some lighting options to more difficult spaces, this might be your best bet. Just make sure you get yours before it’s no longer on sale. You’ll be glad you did.
