Bitcoin News Today: Ether (ETH) Likely to Top $5K, BTC Eyes Record High as Powell Sparks Rally; Watch for DAT Deal Risks: Asset Managers

by admin August 23, 2025

Cryptocurrencies surged late Friday after Federal Reserve President Jerome Powell struck a dovish tone at the Jackson Hole economic symposium, defying market expectations for a more hawkish stance. That has prompted asset managers to call for new all-time highs for bitcoin BTC$115,790.79, ether (ETH) and select altcoins.

What Powell said?

In one of his most important speeches, Powell suggested that the labor market could benefit from lower borrowing costs, having held the benchmark interest rate steady at 4.25% for eight months.

“Downside risks to employment are rising,” Powell said in prepared remarks for his keynote speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium, adding that the possibility of President Donald Trump’s tariffs having only a short-lived effect on inflation is “reasonable.”

“With policy in restrictive territory, the baseline outlook and the shifting balance of risks may warrant adjusting our policy stance,” he noted.

Cryptocurrencies and stocks soared, and the probability of the September Fed rate cut jumped to 90% following the speech. Most analysts expect the momentum to continue in the days ahead.

Analysts see new highs for BTC and ETH above $5K

Analysts at Monarq Asset Management anticipate that ether’s price will rise above $5,000 in the coming days.

“We maintain our overall bullish stance. Market internals remain constructive, with few signs of overheating and, as you point out, a clear path to new all-time highs in both BTC and ETH,” Sam Gaer, chief investment officer of Monarq Asset Management’s Directional Fund, told CoinDesk.

“Our house view is that Powell’s dovish pivot has cleared the way for $5,000+ in the near term (also not the hardest call to make). Demand from treasury vehicles should increase into the fall as many of the deals announced this summer close or de-SPAC, in addition to ongoing institutional and retail inflows,” Gaer added.

Ethereum’s native token ether has already gained nearly 10% in 24 hours, hitting record highs above $4,800. As of writing, it changed hands at $4,700, according to CoinDesk data. Meanwhile, market leader bitcoin traded near $115,600, slightly down from the overnight high of $117,400.

Data from Deribit-listed options shows that ether’s rally has sparked renewed demand for upside bets, or call options. At press time, risk reversals were positive across all tenors, implying relative richness of calls. The sentiment wasn’t so bullish in BTC options.

Gaer stated that over-the-counter desks and market makers are experiencing stronger demand for ETH compared to BTC, suggesting that ether may outperform ahead.

That said, BTC looked strong on its own too. “The BTC pullback from ATH was ~9.6%—far less than earlier drawdowns this year—indicating strong demand, as evidenced by whale wallet accumulation around the $113k level,” Gaer said.

Spencer Yang, managing partner at BlockSpaceForce, a crypto treasury advisory firm, said more rate cuts could happen after September, ensuring the momentum extends well into the year-end.

“We’re now fully expecting rate cuts to happen in September. It will be the first cut since Trump became President this year. This is significant, and many more will come,” Yang said, calling new highs in the crypto market.

“The major 5 that we pay attention to: BTC, ETH, BNB, SOL, LINK. These will do well given the various parts of the crypto industry they impact,” Yang added.

Focus on ETF flows

Steve Lee, co-founder and managing partner at Neoclassic Capital and investor in BlockTower Capital, called Powell’s dovish turn a short-term constructive development for cryptocurrencies while stressing the importance of continued inflows into bitcoin and ether spot ETFs.

“I see this as constructive in the short term, and it may help reverse this week’s sell-off. The key question is whether this momentum holds beyond the low-liquidity weekend. Since BTC and ETH price action is increasingly institutionally driven, spot ETF flows today and Monday will be a strong indicator of whether we are set for another leg higher,” Lee told CoinDesk.

Lee highlighted Base, Monad, Story, and SUI as key projects of interest that he is closely monitoring in his capacity as an early-stage venture capitalist.

Gaer, meanwhile, favored Solana and the SOL ecosystem, including high-beta SOL tokens such as JITO and JUP. Raydium and PUMP on both a “fundamental and forward-demand basis.”

Potential headwinds

While Powell’s dovish stance has set the stage for a rally, traders should remain cautious about potential pitfalls from corporate treasury cryptocurrency adoption and volatility in equity markets.

“Digital asset treasuries (DAT) are an innovative vehicle for public market investors to gain exposure to the digital asset space. However, we have started to see the quality of DAT deals – from banking relationships, compliance, management team, and deal structure perspectives — dropping, which shows early signs of a ‘bubble,” Lee said.

Naqsdaq-listed Strategy started this trend of corporate BTC adoption in 2020. Since then, more than 100 publicly-listed firms have accumulated a total of 984,971 BTC, according to data source Bitcoin Treasuries.

“The trend may continue, but it is obvious that the risks associated with this are not ignorable,” Lee added.

Gaer called for closely tracking risks from an overheated equity market and “potential for macro or geopolitical shocks.”

Bitcoin May Hit $1.3M by 2035, Says Crypto Asset Manager Bitwise

by admin August 23, 2025

Crypto asset manager Bitwise is betting big on bitcoin’s (BTC) future, projecting that the next decade will mark a period of outsized growth for the world’s largest cryptocurrency.

In a report published Thursday, Bitwise analysts predicted that bitcoin could become the best-performing institutional asset over the next 10 years, with its price climbing to $1.3 million by 2035.

The prediction comes at a time when the bitcoin price has reached new all-time highs and is trading above $100,000 amid better regulatory clarity, and more institutional investors are jumping into the sector.

Bitwise’s new price prediction implies a compound annual growth rate of 28.3%, returns that would dwarf most traditional assets, though the firm cautions that volatility will remain a defining feature of the market, even if it trends lower than in past cycles.

Three forces will drive adoption and price appreciation, analysts led by Matt Hougan wrote.

The first catalyst is bitcoin’s ongoing emergence as an institutional-grade asset. The second is rising demand for hard-asset exposure in an inflationary environment, and the third is the fixed nature of its new supply.

Bitwise also said that bitcoin’s “historic four-year cycle” thesis, which has long been a touchstone for traders, is no longer relevant.

Still, it warns investors should expect steep drawdowns. Among the biggest risks: regulatory shifts, legislative changes in major markets, and the challenges of a relatively new asset with limited historical data.

While quantum computing and other technological threats are on the radar, Bitwise sees them as secondary concerns.

The firm also concedes that forecasting bitcoin’s future is fraught with uncertainty, given the lack of long-term data. “We aim to err on the side of being conservative,” the note said, underscoring that models for such projections are still evolving.

XRP Must Grow: RSI Says So, Bitcoin (BTC): Catastrophic Signal? Ethereum (ETH): $5,000 in September?

by admin August 23, 2025

  • Bitcoin’s divergence
  • Ethereum not empty

After dropping below its rising trendline, which indicates a deterioration in short-term momentum, XRP is now at a pivotal point. XRP is now trading at about $2.86, having lost ground above the crucial support trendline that once directed its rally.

Although indicators suggest that buyers may be losing ground, a recovery is still possible if momentum picks back up. The Relative Strength Index (RSI), which is currently trading just below 40, is one of the best indicators. Usually, this level means that the asset is approaching oversold territory, where selling pressure might start to wear off. Notable rebounds have frequently been preceded by similar RSI readings in previous XRP cycles.

XRP/USDT Chart by TradingView

Given that the market is at a technical crossroads, the RSI indicates that a relief rally may be possible in the upcoming sessions. This mixed picture is further compounded by the consistent drop in trading volume. Since there is less conviction behind the sell-off, a relatively small amount of buying pressure could reverse the momentum and push it back upward, as indicated by the decreased participation.

In order to regain the ascending structure and pursue additional recovery, XRP may need to regain the $2.95-$3.00 zone. But hazards still exist. Now a crucial battleground, the 50-day EMA is situated just below current prices. A breakdown below this level might hasten losses in the direction of the 100-day EMA, which is located at $2.74. This area might serve as a last line of defense prior to more significant corrections.

All things considered, the XRP chart shows weakness, but not surrender. Bulls may soon have a chance to recover lost ground if the oversold RSI reading indicates that the downside momentum may soon stall. It is still possible for XRP to recover if volume increases and stays above its moving averages.

Bitcoin’s divergence

In addition to showing a pronounced bearish RSI divergence, the top cryptocurrency recently broke below its 50-day EMA, a historically significant support level. This pattern indicates that even though the price reached a new all-time high earlier this month, the underlying momentum has been gradually eroding.

This is a risky situation that frequently occurs before lengthy corrections. Because the divergence reflects market conditions observed in June 2022, when a similar setup preceded a deep and prolonged sell-off, it is especially concerning. Even though price action initially looked bullish, the RSI trended lower in both instances as the price pushed higher, indicating that buyers were losing strength. The final collapse resulted in a series of liquidations, and the state of the market now suggests that history may repeat itself.

You Might Also Like

The apparent drop in trading volume strengthens the bearish argument. Usually, a declining volume trend during a retracement indicates that there is not enough demand at the current price levels. Given that Bitcoin is currently trading just above the 100-day EMA at $110,600, the likelihood of further declines increases in the absence of strong buyer support. The 200-day EMA, at about $103,500, might be the next crucial line of defense if this level gives way.

RSI is another warning sign, as it is currently approaching the neutral 40 zone. If it falls below 40, bearish dominance would be strengthened, which could hasten the downward trend. The market is delicately balanced in light of this, and further selling pressure could trigger a further decline.

Ethereum not empty

With Ethereum displaying resilience once more, there is conjecture that a run toward $5,000 might occur as early as September. ETH had to undergo a necessary correction after weeks of sharp increases, cooling off from its peak around $4,800. Crucially, the correction happened under control, with ETH recovering from the 26-day EMA and remaining above $4,200, a level that traders are currently targeting as short-term support. Corrections are frequently seen as a way to cool down markets, and Ethereum appears to have done so successfully.

While the recent pullback cleared out speculation and excess leverage, volume patterns indicate that sellers are waning as buyers gradually regain control. The technical room for another leg higher has been created by the RSI’s normalization after it had previously entered overbought territory. The self-driven correction in ETH’s setup is what makes it so interesting. Instead of being a panic-driven sell-off, Ethereum’s decline was more of a consolidation phase than a sudden market-wide crash. Usually a bullish sign, this type of behavior indicates that the asset is stabilizing before continuing on its current course.

You Might Also Like

The likelihood of Ethereum retesting $4,800 increases if it keeps its footing above $4,200 and buyers keep intervening. A run toward the psychologically significant $5,000 mark would then be possible if that resistance zone were broken. Ethereum is the focus of renewed investor interest as Bitcoin consolidates and altcoin momentum increases.

Even though there are no guarantees in the cryptocurrency space, the charts indicate that ETH has established a stronger base for future growth. Ethereum may finally make the much-awaited move above $5,000 in September.

Philippines Congressman Pushes Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Bill With 10,000 BTC Goal

by admin August 22, 2025

Filipino lawmaker Representative Migz Villafuerte has introduced House Bill 421, which seeks to establish a strategic Bitcoin (BTC) reserve for the Philippines. The bill tasks the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) with acquiring 10,000 BTC over the next five years.

Philippines Politician Floats Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Bill

Under the proposal, the BSP would be responsible for building a national Bitcoin reserve aimed at strengthening financial security by diversifying the country’s monetary assets. Bitcoin’s performance over the past year has reinforced its reputation as a store of value, with the digital asset hitting an all-time high of more than $124,000 before retreating slightly.

House Bill 421 recommends that the BSP purchase 2,000 BTC annually, targeting a total of 10,000 BTC within five years. These holdings would be locked in for a minimum of 20 years to provide long-term debt stability. Villafuerte explained:

It is vital for the Philippines to stockpile strategic assets such as BTC to serve important national interest such as providing financial stability, among others.

During the 20-year holding period, none of the BTC in the reserve may be sold, swapped, or auctioned except to reduce government debt. One year before the term expires, the BSP governor must provide recommendations on whether to keep the reserve or allow gradual sales.

After the minimum holding period, the reserve may be reduced. However, sales will remain capped at no more than 10% of total holdings every two years.

The bill calls for oversight by the Monetary Board (MB) to ensure transparency. It also requires the BSP to include updates on the Bitcoin reserve in its quarterly reports.

Strategic BTC Reserve Trend Picks Momentum

In his speech, Villafuerte cited examples of other countries exploring options of establishing a strategic Bitcoin reserve. For instance, the US government is actively working on developing its BTC reserve, following Donald Trump’s victory in the November 2024 presidential election.

Following in the US’ footsteps, multiple countries have expressed willingness to create their own sovereign BTC reserves. Earlier this year, several Chilean lawmakers proposed the creation of a strategic Bitcoin reserve for the South American country.

In the same vein, Pakistan’s Minister for Crypto and Blockchain announced in June the creation of the country’s first strategic BTC reserve. Another South Asian country, Bhutan, has already stockpiled huge quantities of Bitcoin.

Similarly, Brazil’s chief-of-staff to the Vice President said earlier this year that the country can no longer afford to ignore the rising global adoption of the Bitcoin protocol as a reliable monetary network. At press time, BTC trades at $112,420, down 0.7% in the past 24 hours.

Public Keys: Ethereum Treasuries Soar, Bitcoin ETFs’ $1 Billion Bleed, Crypto IPO Chatter

by admin August 22, 2025

In brief

  • Crypto stocks surged on Fed Chair Powell’s dovish Jackson Hole speech hinting at September rate cuts, with Ethereum treasury companies and Bitcoin miners leading gains of 8-15%.
  • Bitcoin ETFs bled $1 billion over five consecutive days while Ethereum ETFs rebounded with $288 million in net inflows on Thursday.
  • Blockchain lender Figure Technologies filed for an IPO, seeking to go public after processing over $16 billion in home loans on its Provenance blockchain.

Public Keys is a weekly roundup from Decrypt that tracks the key publicly traded crypto companies.

Wings of a Dove

Crypto stocks (and the rest of the crypto and stock market) are soaring thanks to a big boost from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s dovish speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium on Friday morning.

Crypto and stocks tend to get a boost when the Fed lowers rates because it triggers a rotation of funds from treasury bonds and into risk-on assets.

During his remarks, Powell said the “shifting balance of risks may warrant adjusting our policy stance.” In other words, he opened the possibility for a rate cut when the Federal Open Markets Committee meets again in September.

Crypto exchange Coinbase’s shares gained about 6% and Bitcoin hoarding behemoth Strategy rose 5% on the day—a nice reversal from earlier in the week.

But it’s Bitcoin miners and Ethereum treasury companies that won the day. The two largest Ethereum treasuries—former Bitcoin miner BitMine Immersion and online gambling marketer SharpLink—  gained 12% and 15.6%, respectively.

Bitcoin mining rig manufacturer Canaan’s stock gained 12%, and Bitcoin miners Riot Platforms and Iris Energy picked up 7.7% and 9.3%, respectively.

Katalin Tishhauser, head of research at Sygnum Bank, noted that while crypto markets had a “swift and positive” reaction to the news, she flagged that the underpinning economic data still shows signs of trouble.

“Even if a September cut does not materialize, the market has proven resilient in digesting past disappointments while still setting new highs. Momentum may continue, albeit with higher volatility,” she told Decrypt. “Meanwhile, spiralling debt and rising inflation remain unresolved structural issues—factors that strengthen the case for safe-haven assets over the longer term.”

$1 Billion Bleed

Bitcoin ETFs just spent five days in the red and shed $1 billion—even as their Ethereum counterparts staged a turnaround. On Thursday, Ethereum funds stopped the bleed and pulled in $288 million worth of net deposits.

The dominance of Ethereum in the current market narrative is very much warranted, according to the latest note from M31 Capital.

The private equity and venture capital fund pointed out that infrastructure, DeFi, L1 and L2 networks, and Web3 companies were all in the green—and all came out ahead of Bitcoin.

But nothing short of another all-time high for BTC was going to top last week’s record-setting run to $124,128.

Figure on the runway

Just as Bullish makes its $1.15 billion debut, there’s a new crypto company ready to test its wings.

Blockchain lender Figure Technologies has filed  paperwork for an initial public offering.

Now, it’s important to make a distinction about what Figure does given the history of crypto lenders in the space: Figure uses its platform to enable lending outside the traditional scope of the crypto industry, such as real estate.

The company says that its the largest non-bank provider of home equity lines of credit in the U.S. and that its software has been used for more than $16 billion worth of home loans.

Illia Otychenko, the lead analyst at CEX.IO, told Decrypt earlier this week that the company “dominates the tokenized private credit space, with more than 70% market share and over $11 billion in active loans on its Provenance blockchain.”

Figure is co-founded by SoFi co-founder and former CEO Mike Cagney, who left the bank in 2017 amid sexual harassment allegations. The IPO would mark his return to leading a publicly traded company.

“The IPO is one step in a long process to bring blockchain to all aspects of capital markets,” he said in the company’s SEC filing. No word yet on share pricing, though.

Other Keys

Timber: Nasdaq has delisted drug developer Windtree Therapeutics, which announced last month that it would buy $700 million worth of Binance’s BNB token. The company said in an SEC filing that its shares stopped trading on the Nasdaq for failing to maintain the $1-per-share minimum bid price required by the exchange.

USA Made: Bitcoin miner Bitdeer confirmed it’s going to begin manufacturing mining rigs in the U.S. this year. That news came as two of its competitors—Iris Energy and CleanSpark—have been hit with letters from U.S. customs asking for millions in tariffs on Chinese-manufactured rigs purchased in 2024.

Bitcoin Miners Hit by $100M Tariffs

by admin August 22, 2025

The Bitcoin mining industry is squarely in the crosshairs of the US-led trade war, with publicly traded miners receiving hefty invoices from US Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Yet, in a twist, a mining venture backed by US President Donald Trump’s family secured more than 16,000 rigs from China’s Bitmain without incurring additional duties.

Beyond mining headwinds, the broader blockchain sector is intensifying efforts to court Wall Street as institutional adoption accelerates across exchange-traded funds, corporate treasuries and tokenized real-world assets. Ether (ETH) treasury firms are also ramping up accumulation, while reports suggest China may be preparing to greenlight yuan-backed stablecoins.

This week’s Crypto Biz newsletter explores these developments, highlighting The Miner Mag’s latest findings, Polkadot’s new capital markets division, SharpLink’s major ETH purchase and Beijing’s potential stablecoin pivot.

US Bitcoin miners face $100M+ tariff hit

The US Bitcoin mining industry has been swept into President Donald Trump’s trade war, with public miners CleanSpark and IREN warning of potential tariff liabilities of $185 million and $100 million, respectively, according to The Miner Mag.

Both companies said they received invoices from US Customs and Border Protection, which alleged that certain mining rigs were of Chinese origin. Under the White House’s revised tariff schedule, equipment sourced from China is now subject to an effective duty of 57.6%.

Beyond tariffs, The Miner Mag noted that mining revenues “remain under pressure,” with transaction fees slipping below 1% of block rewards.

Production data for July showed IREN and Mara Holdings each mined more than 700 BTC, while CleanSpark and Cango generated over 600 BTC apiece.

Polkadot establishes capital markets division

Polkadot has launched a new capital markets division aimed at attracting institutional investors to its blockchain — a move that underscores the industry’s growing effort to court Wall Street.

The new entity, Polkadot Capital Group, is based in the Cayman Islands and was established in response to rising institutional demand for digital assets, the company said. It also pointed to recent positive regulatory signals in the United States as a catalyst for the launch.

Polkadot Capital Group will focus on showcasing blockchain use cases across decentralized finance, staking and real-world assets, while helping traditional finance players explore crypto opportunities in areas such as asset management and banking.

Polkadot is the 24th largest blockchain by market capitalization with a total value of around $6 billion.

China reportedly weighs yuan-backed stablecoins

Despite its sweeping restrictions on digital assets, China is reportedly considering allowing the development of yuan-backed stablecoins — a potential policy shift that would mark a major reversal for the world’s second-largest economy.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, Reuters said authorities in Beijing are open to approving yuan-backed stablecoins as part of a broader strategy to expand the currency’s role in global trade. Such a move would represent a sharp departure from the country’s stance nearly four years ago, when it effectively banned crypto trading and mining.

The reports come as stablecoin adoption surges elsewhere, particularly in the United States, which recently passed the GENIUS stablecoin bill. The total value of stablecoins in circulation has now surpassed $288 billion, with US dollar–backed tokens accounting for the overwhelming majority.

SharpLink bags another $667M ETH

SharpLink, a sports betting firm that has adopted Ether as a treasury asset, added 143,595 ETH as the token approached all-time highs, according to regulatory filings.

The purchase, valued at $667.4 million, brings SharpLink’s total holdings to 740,760 ETH — worth roughly $3 billion at current market prices.

Even with the massive haul, SharpLink is not the largest Ether treasury holder. That title belongs to BitMine, which acquired 373,000 ETH on Monday, lifting its total holdings to 1.52 million ETH, valued at about $6.5 billion.

While ETH has corrected lower this week, the asset remains one of crypto’s top performers, having gained nearly 200% since its April low.

Dormant Bitcoin Whale Awakens: BTC OG Rotates Into $577M ETH Long

by admin August 22, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

Bitcoin is entering a decisive phase after setting fresh all-time highs last week but failing to trigger a clean breakout. Following the rejection below $125K, the market has shifted into uncertainty, with volatility rising and traders split on what comes next. Analysts are divided: some warn of a breakdown below current range supports, while others argue that this consolidation is just another step before a continuation higher.

Adding fuel to the debate, new on-chain data from Lookonchain reveals activity from a long-dormant Bitcoin OG. This wallet, which first received 100,784 BTC ($642M) seven years ago, has ended its dormancy with a surprising strategy. Instead of continuing to hold BTC, the OG sold a significant portion while rotating into Ethereum. The whale purchased 62,914 ETH ($267M) spot and opened a massive 135,265 ETH ($577M) long position.

The scale of this move is notable, signaling one of the boldest bets by an early Bitcoin holder in recent years. It underscores shifting dynamics in crypto markets, where institutional demand and cross-asset strategies now play a critical role. Whether this signals fading Bitcoin momentum or a tactical rotation remains to be seen, but the coming weeks could be decisive.

Bitcoin OG Whale Moves Align With Ethereum Rotation

According to Lookonchain, one of the largest Bitcoin OG wallets has been actively moving funds on-chain, depositing BTC into Hyperliquid to sell while simultaneously accumulating Ethereum. Tracking shows this OG originally received 85,947 BTC ($547M) around seven years ago, and the trading activity strongly mirrors the whale behavior reported recently.

Further on-chain analysis identifies six wallets tied to the same OG, collectively holding an enormous 83,585 BTC ($9.42B). The scale of these holdings confirms that we’re watching one of the most influential individual players in the crypto market.

Bitcoin dormant whale transactions | Source: Lookonchain

These recent moves do not necessarily signal a wholesale rotation from Bitcoin into Ethereum across the broader market, but they highlight the tactics of a large, strategic whale. The Bitcoin short positions opened could serve as a hedge against existing BTC exposure, protecting gains while reallocating into ETH. Alternatively, the OG might anticipate a stronger relative performance from Ethereum in the short to medium term.

The reality is that the exact motives remain unclear. Still, these actions align with the latest trend of asset rotation into Ethereum, fueled by institutional adoption, treasury strategies, and leveraged bets. Regardless of intent, the market impact of such large-scale moves cannot be ignored, as they add weight to Ethereum’s growing dominance narrative.

BTC Enters Critical Phase

The 8-hour chart shows Bitcoin trading at $112,779, holding just above its 200-period moving average (red line), currently positioned at $113,498. This level has become a crucial battleground between bulls and bears, as BTC tries to stabilize after losing the $120K zone earlier this month.

BTC consolidates below key levels | Source: BTCUSDT chart on TradingView

Price action highlights a clear lower high structure following the rejection at $123,217, which now stands as strong resistance. Since then, Bitcoin has struggled to recover momentum, consistently trading below the 50-period (blue) and 100-period (green) moving averages, signaling a bearish short-term bias. The confluence of these MAs around $116K–$117K marks a zone that BTC must reclaim to shift momentum back in favor of bulls.

For now, support at $112K is being tested repeatedly. A breakdown below this level could trigger further downside toward $110K, aligning with the broader market’s weakening momentum. On the flip side, if bulls manage to defend current levels and push price above the 50MA, the path back toward $118K–$120K could reopen.

From the midterm point of view, the price of BTC has made a false breakout of the support of $111,919. In this case, one should focus on the weekly candle’s closure. If it happens far from that mark, bulls may again seize the initiative, which may lead to a test of the $120,000 mark.

Bitcoin is trading at $116,750 at press time.

Coinbase, Strategy Lead Crypto Stock Rebound as Bitcoin and Ethereum Soar

by admin August 22, 2025

In brief

  • Shares of crypto companies rose in price alongside digital assets and major stock indices.
  • The price surge comes after Federal Reserve Jerome Powell indicated that the central bank could cut rates next month.
  • Bitcoin and Ethereum were also trading higher on Friday, with ETH and altcoins leading the charge.

Crypto-focused company stocks rose Friday alongside digital coins following a more dovish-than-expected speech from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.

Nasdaq-listed Coinbase (COIN) spiked and was recently trading more than 6% higher on the day at $319. Meanwhile, Bitcoin treasury and software firm Strategy—MSTR—was up by nearly 65 to $354. Both had been trading down in recent days, but COIN is now in the green over the past week while MSTR remains slightly down during the span.

And Circle, which debuted on the New York Stock Exchange in May in a blockbuster IPO, jumped higher. The stablecoin giant was recently priced 6% higher over the past day, currently at $140, but had shown a 9% leap earlier in the morning.

Elsewhere, leading Bitcoin miners, CleanSpark (CLSK) and Riot Platforms (RIOT) rose by 5% and nearly 9% on the day, respectively, to nearly $10 and above $13.

Crypto treasuries like SharpLink and BitMine Immersion—which focus on buying and holding Ethereum, the second biggest digital coin—both jumped by more than 12%, hitting nearly $20 and $54.

Broadly, stocks are up on the day, with The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbing higher by 880 points, or nearly 2%, touching a new high. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 climbed 1.45%, and the Nasdaq rose by 1.6%.

The rise in equities comes as leading cryptocurrencies Bitcoin and Ethereum also jump. Bitcoin was recently priced at $116,318, up 3% in the hour after Jerome Powell spoke, CoinGecko data shows. Ethereum spiked higher by nearly 8% in one hour. The coin was recently trading for $4,740, about $130 away from its all-time high mark from 2021.

Over the past day, Bitcoin and Ethereum were up 3% and nearly 12%, respectively.

An interest rate cut would likely help cryptocurrency and tech stocks. Both assets have typically done well in the past in a low interest rate environment, as traders are more drawn to risk assets.

U.S. President Donald Trump has been pressuring Powell to cut rates, frequently insulting the Fed chair on Truth Social and even threatening to fire or even sue him.

The Fed started aggressively raising rates in 2022 in an attempt to control 40-year high inflation brought on by COVID-19. The central bank then started cutting borrowing costs again last year as the economy cooled.

Are Bitcoin Treasury Companies Good Or Bad? Analysts Expand On Skepticism

The rise of Bitcoin treasury companies has sparked an intense debate over whether they add stability or new layers of risk to businesses. Analysts from the global credit rating agency, Morningstar have expanded on the skepticism, pointing out that using cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin as a primary reserve currency may weaken, rather than strengthen the stability of corporate treasuries.

The Dark Side Of Bitcoin Treasury Companies

The adoption of cryptocurrencies for treasury functions has become one of the most trending topics in the financial industry. In a commentary published on August 21, Morningstar analysts noted that while Bitcoin and Ethereum are increasingly used for payments and investments, the shifts toward employing them for treasury functions introduce risks that could outweigh potential benefits.

According to the commentary, Bitcoin treasury companies are likely exposing themselves to elevated levels of financial instability. One of the biggest drivers of this risk is the absence of clear regulatory oversight. Morningstar analysts highlighted the lack of a global regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies, with countries like the United States and Canada adopting differing approaches, while others, such as Egypt and China, impose outright bans.

This fragmented environment reportedly creates unpredictability for corporations that must manage compliance and financial stability. For treasuries, where certainty and legal clarity are vital, the analysts caution that such uncertainty may heighten credit risk and weaken confidence in long-term planning.

Morningstar further stressed that cryptocurrency markets lack the depth of traditional asset markets, making liquidity unreliable. The analysts warn that this can cause companies to incur losses or face delays when attempting to access capital. They also note that such disruptions undermine the efficiency expected of corporate treasury management.

Morningstar’s report also highlighted security risks for Bitcoin treasury concerns companies, noting that reliance on third-party custodians and exchanges such as Coinbase or Binance exposes them to operational failure, cyberattacks, and regulatory disputes. It added that the dual role of these exchanges as both trading platforms and custodians increases counterparty risks, weakening the stability of treasury reserves.

Further Warnings Issued Over BTC Treasury Firms

In the commentary, Morningstar analysts further stated that volatility remains the most striking weakness of Bitcoin treasury companies. Their research underscored that Bitcoin is nearly five times more volatile than the S&P 500 in the short term, exposing companies to sudden valuation swings that can severely destabilize operations.

Morningstar also noted that the materiality of crypto holdings is another central concern of Bitcoin treasury companies. The analysts caution that when digital assets make up a significant portion of a company’s reserves, the treasury begins to function more like a speculative portfolio than a financial safeguard.

The report pointed out that firms like Strategy Inc., which holds over 629,000 BTC, are particularly exposed to this imbalance. With the top 20 public companies controlling 94% of total public Bitcoin treasury holdings, the sector also faces significant concentration risks. Furthermore, Morningstar warns that Bitcoin treasury companies may also be vulnerable to technical failures, exchange insolvency, liquidity crises, and weakened creditworthiness, even with insurance and security measures in place.
