Niners’ Mac Jones beats odds, lets it fly in OT win over Rams

Nick Wagoner is an NFL reporter at ESPN. Nick has covered the San Francisco 49ers since 2016, having previously covered the St. Louis Rams for 12 years, including three years (2013 to 2015) at ESPN. In over a decade with the company, Nick has led ESPN’s coverage of the Niners’ 2019 and 2023 Super Bowl run, Colin Kaepernick’s protest, the Rams making Michael Sam the first openly gay player drafted to the NFL, Sam’s subsequent pursuit of a roster spot and the team’s relocation and stadium saga.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — In the hours before Thursday night’s game against the Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan approached quarterback Mac Jones and let him know that the short-handed Niners were more than touchdown underdogs against their division rivals.

“I don’t really pay attention to much to it,” Jones said, laughing. “Kyle came up to me, and he was pissed about it. He’s like, ‘Dude, I can’t believe they moved us to underdogs again,’ or like more [extreme underdogs] or whatever. And I’m like, ‘I don’t know what that means really, [but] like, yeah, let’s go kill them.’ He was pissed about it. I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m pissed, too.'”

Jones said he doesn’t pay much attention to social media and has little knowledge on the inner workings of odds making, but Shanahan’s motivational ploy seemed to work as the Niners’ backup quarterback delivered one of his best career performances and the 49ers pulled off a 26-23 victory despite missing many of their biggest stars.

The Niners entered the game as 8.5-point underdogs, according to ESPN BET, and Thursday night’s win was their first outright victory with odds that big since 2011 against the Philadelphia Eagles, when they were 9.5-point underdogs. It was also the largest upset of the 2025 season so far, surpassing the Cleveland Browns’ win against the Green Bay Packers in Week 3 as 7.5-point underdogs.

San Francisco improved to 4-1 on the season and 3-0 in the NFC West despite missing starting quarterback Brock Purdy, top-three wideouts Brandon Aiyuk (knee), Ricky Pearsall (knee) and Jauan Jennings (ribs/ankle), and star tight end George Kittle. In addition, star defensive end Nick Bosa is out for the season with a torn right ACL.

To open the game, Jones was throwing to a collection of receivers and tight ends that had mustered zero catches for the 49ers in 2024, with Kendrick Bourne and Demarcus Robinson starting at receiver and Luke Farrell getting the nod at tight end.

Jones battled through a sprained left knee and a cramping forearm to finish 33-of-49 for 342 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for a passer rating of 100.9.

“He played his ass off,” Shanahan said. “He was unbelievable in the first half. Got banged up a little bit there in the second half, and battled through it, and protected the ball. Going against that defense and throwing the ball that many times and not having a turnover and protecting it like he did, I can’t say enough good things about Mac.”

With a few extra days to rest before a Week 6 trip to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Niners don’t yet know how much longer they’ll need Jones to start. The team ruled Purdy out Wednesday, and though he has indicated his toe is still much better than it was following the initial Week 1 injury, Shanahan said there is no definitive timeline on Purdy’s return.

“Everything we told you guys last week is true,” Shanahan said. “He just reaggravated it, and it’s week-to-week. We don’t know how it’s going to heal, and hopefully it’ll be better tomorrow, and we’ll continue to go throughout the week.”

Jones and the Niners’ cobbled-together group of pass catchers opened the game with a pair of touchdown drives as he hit Tonges and running back Christian McCaffrey to stake San Francisco to a 14-0 lead.

For most of the night, Jones was on point. He had only two off-target throws among his 49 attempts, a 4% mark that is his lowest in a start since Week 12 of 2022 as a member of the New England Patriots. Jones even handled the Rams’ pass rush well, going 6-of-9 for 53 yards and four first downs when pressured.

Many of his throws were to Bourne, whom the team signed before Week 2 against New Orleans. Coming off a game against Jacksonville in which he had three drops, Bourne had another key drop Thursday night and also had some issues lining up correctly, but he atoned for the mistakes by setting career highs with 10 receptions for 142 yards, including eight catches for first downs.

“KB has brought so much energy, so much juice to this team, and we love and appreciate him so much,” fullback Kyle Juszczyk said. “Guys that have played with him before knew that, but I think everyone that hasn’t has seen it right away. He’s definitely helped spark this team.”

As in San Francisco’s three other wins this season, the team also got key contributions from defensive members of its 2025 draft class. Second-round defensive tackle Alfred Collins forced and recovered a fumble at San Francisco’s goal line late in the fourth quarter to prevent a potential game-winning touchdown, and rookie safety Marques Sigle was in on the final tackle of Rams running back Kyren Williams to stop him short on fourth-and-1 at the Niners’ 11.

“[General manager] John Lynch is probably going to celebrate on that plane tonight,” linebacker Fred Warner said. “Our young guys really coming and playing big for us. I mean all these games so far … and they’re just getting started.”

Early sales on gear from Apple, Anker, Samsung, Beats and others

by admin September 20, 2025

Amazon Prime Day has returned in the fall for the past few years, and 2025 is no exception. Prime Day will return on October 7 and 8, but really, you don’t have to wait until the official start date to save. Amazon typically always has early Prime Day deals in the lead-up to the event, and this year we’re already seeing some solid discounts on gadgets we like. Here, we’ve gathered all of the best Prime Day deals you can get right now, and we’ll keep updating this post as we get close to Prime Day proper.

Best Prime Day deals: Engadget’s top picks

Apple

Apple Mac mini (M4) for $499 $100 off): If you prefer desktops, the upgraded M4 Mac mini is one that won’t take up too much space, but will provide a ton of power at the same time. Not only does it come with an M4 chipset, but it also includes 16GB of RAM in the base model, plus front-facing USB-C and headphone ports for easier access.

Apple iPad Air (11-inch, M3) for $449 ($150 off): The only major difference between the latest iPad Air and the previous generation is the addition of the faster M3 chip. We awarded the new slab an 89 in our review, appreciating the fact that the M3 chip was about 16 percent faster in benchmark tests than the M2. This is the iPad to get if you want a reasonable amount of productivity out of an iPad that’s more affordable than the Pro models.

Apple MagSafe charger (25W, 2m) for $35 (29 percent off): The latest version of Apple’s MagSafe puck is Qi2.2-certified and supports up to 25W of wireless power when paired with a 30W adapter. The two-meter cable length on this particular model gives you more flexibility on where you can use it: in bed, on the couch, at your desk and elsewhere.

Anker 622 5K magnetic power bank with stand for $28 (42 percent off): This 0.5-inch thick power bank attaches magnetically to iPhones and won’t get in your way when you’re using your phone. It also has a built-in stand so you can watch videos, make FaceTime calls and more hands-free while your phone is powering up.

8BitDo Pro 2 controller with travel case for $40 (34 percent off, Prime exclusive): We generally love 8BitDo controllers, and the Pro 2 has been one of our favorites for a long time. This model works with Switch 2, Steam Deck, Android and more, plus it has Hall Effect joysticks and a slew of customization options.

Anker Nano 5K ultra-slim power bank (Qi2, 15W) for $46 (16 percent off): A top pick in our guide to the best MagSafe power banks, this super-slim battery is great for anyone who wants the convenient of extra power without the bulk. We found its proportions work very well with iPhones, and its smooth, matte texture and solid build quality make it feel premium.

Best Prime Day deals on tech

SAMSUNG

Anker Soundcore Select 4 Go speaker for $23 (34 percent off): This small Bluetooth speaker gets pretty loud for its size and has decent sound quality. You can pair two together for stereo sound as well, and its IP67-rated design will keep it protected against water and dust.

Anker Soundcore Space A40 for $45 (44 percent off): Our top pick for the best budget wireless earbuds, the Space A40 have surprisingly good ANC, good sound quality, a comfortable fit and multi-device connectivity.

Anker MagGo 10K power bank (Qi2, 15W) for $60 (25 percent off): A 10K power bank like this is ideal if you want to be able to recharge your phone at least once fully and have extra power to spare. This one is also Qi2 compatible, providing up to 15W of power to supported phones.

Levoit Core 200S smart air purifier for $75 ($15 off with clippable coupon): This compact air purifier cleans the air in rooms up to 140 square feet and uses a 3-in-1 filter that removes microscopic dust, pollen and airborne particles. It has a mobile app that you can use to set runtime schedules, and it works with Alexa and Google Assistant voice commands.

Amazon Fire TV Cube for $100 (29 percent off): Amazon’s most powerful streaming device, the Fire TV Cube supports 4K, HDR and Dolby Vision content, Dolby Atmos sound, Wi-Fi 6E and it has a built-in Ethernet port. It has the most internal storage of any Fire TV streaming device, plus it comes with an enhanced Alexa Voice Remote.

Rode Wireless Go III for $199 (30 percent off): A top pick in our guide to the best wireless microphones, the Wireless Go III records pro-grade sound and has handy extras like onboard storage, 32-bit float and universal compatibility with iPhones, Android, cameras and PCs.

Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 for $200 (20 percent off): These Beats earbuds have a hook design that will be good for anyone who wants the most secure fit while doing strenuous workouts. They also have a built-in heart rate monitor and up to 45 hours of battery life with their included charging case.

Nintendo Switch 2 for $449: While not technically a discount, it’s worth mentioning that the Switch 2 and the Mario Kart Switch 2 bundle are both available at Amazon now, no invitation required. Amazon only listed the new console for the first time in July after being left out of the initial pre-order/availability window in April. Once it became available, Amazon customers looking to buy the Switch 2 had to sign up to receive an invitation to do so. Now, that extra step has been removed and anyone can purchase the Switch 2 on Amazon.

Rex-Osprey’s XRP ETF Beats IVES In Biggest 2025 ETF Launch

by admin September 19, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

Rex-Osprey’s new XRP exchange-traded fund finished its debut session with $37.7 million in trading volume, edging out Wedbush’s Dan Ives AI fund (ticker: IVES) for the largest “natural” day-one dollar volume of any 2025 ETF launch, according to Bloomberg Intelligence’s Eric Balchunas. He added that the firm’s Dogecoin product (DOJE) closed at $17 million, a tally that would rank among the top five debuts this year out of roughly 710 launches.

“XRPR traded $37.7m on Day One, which edges out IVES for the biggest day one (natural) $ volume of any 2025 launch. $DOJE is no slouch at $17m, which would be Top 5 for year.. out of 710 launches. Good sign for the onslaught of 33 Act ETFs coming soon..,” Balchunas wrote via X.

The early order flow was striking. Within 90 minutes of the opening bell, the XRP fund had already crossed $24 million in turnover—“5x more than any of the XRP futures ETFs did on Day One,” Balchunas noted. “SEMI-SHOCK: Rex XRP ETF is already at $24m in volume.”

For Dogecoin, the first hour wasn’t less spectacular. “My over/under got destroyed in the first hour of trading as DOJE already posting nearly $6m in volume. That’s shockingly solid.. Most ETFs trade under $1m on Day One,” Balchunas noted via X.

Why The XRP And Dogecoin ETF Are Big Surprises

Both funds list on Cboe and trade under the tickers XRPR and DOJE (Dogecoin). They are not structured like the 1933 Act spot bitcoin and ether ETFs; instead, they launched under the Investment Company Act of 1940, a framework that carries “stricter limits” and a different exposure design.

Prior to both launches, Balchunas set the expectation bar quite because of that: “The fact that’s it 40 Act and not 33 Act (and is not big boy issuer) could diminish interest a bit relative to other crypto first evers. We’ll soon find out.”

Surpassing IVES matters because the Dan Ives Wedbush AI Revolution ETF has been one of 2025’s breakout thematic launches. While Balchunas used “natural” to describe the record—his term for organic first-day trading rather than seeded prints—his comparison underscores that XRPR’s debut bested a widely watched, high-velocity AI fund. Public materials describe IVES as a June 2025 launch tracking a Solactive AI index.

The robust openings land alongside a pivotal regulatory shift. On September 18, the SEC approved generic listing standards across major US exchanges for spot commodity ETPs, streamlining the path for crypto products beyond bitcoin and ether. In tandem, the agency approved Grayscale’s Digital Large Cap Fund to list, tracking a CoinDesk index of five assets. The move is widely expected to catalyze a wave of additional crypto ETFs.

ETF strategist Nate Geraci flagged that an index-based, multi-asset spot crypto ETF was imminent: “Looks like first index-based spot crypto ETF launches tomorrow… Grayscale CoinDesk Crypto 5 ETF. Holds btc, eth, xrp, sol, & ada. IMO, index-based & actively managed spot crypto ETFs will be met w/ *significant* demand, esp from financial advisors. Will be *huge* category.”

At press time, XRP traded at $3.04.

Bullish’s Beats Q2 Earnings, Sees Higher Adjusted Ebitda for Next Quarter

by admin September 17, 2025

Bullish (BLSH), the owner of CoinDesk, earnings per share beat average analyst estimates, while expecting higher adjusted Ebitda for the next quarter.

The crypto platform reported earnings per share (EPS) of $0.93 in the second quarter, beating the average analyst estimate of $0.03, according to FactSet data. Bullish also reported adjusted revenue of $57 million for the second quarter, versus estimate of $60.7 million.

Tom Farley, CEO of Bullish, said in a filing that the crypto firm experienced “exciting liquidity services growth, executed on a successful Consensus conference,” and that it is seeing “strong business momentum” in the third quarter.

The firm’s trading volume surged to $179.6 billion, up from $133.0 billion in the same quarter last year. For the next quarter, Bullish sees trading volume of $133.0 billion to $142.0 billion.

Bullish also expects $25 million to $28 million in adjusted Ebitda for the third quarter versus $8.1 million in the second quarter, according to the statement.

The report marks the company’s first quarterly report since going public on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in August. BLSH’s IPO price was set at $37 a share and currently trades at $53.54, up 44% from the IPO price.

The stock was up during normal trading hours on Wednesday after the firm secured a BitLicense from the New York State Department of Financial Services. Analysts called this a crucial regulatory approval that opens the door for the firm to expand in the U.S.

The stock is up about 4.5% in post-market trading.

Crypto prices soared in the months from April to June, with bitcoin gaining 30% that quarter, making it the best-performing major asset globally. The CoinDesk20 Index, which tracks the broader market, rose 23% in the same period.

Beats’ new iPhone 17 case has a lanyard that turns into a kickstand

by admin September 10, 2025

Beats has launched a new collection of cases to go with Apple’s latest iPhones, including one with a removable lanyard that doubles as a kickstand. Lanyards and cross-body straps for phones are becoming pretty common these days. If you’re someone who travels every now and then, they can help protect you from pickpockets or from accidentally leaving your phone behind while you struggle with your luggage. The lanyard on Beats’ case comes with something extra: It has an adaptor at the end that slides open and attaches to a magnetic part on the side of the case so that it can act as a kickstand for hands-free phone use. The Beats iPhone 17 Kickstand Case with MagSafe & Camera Control is available in Granite Gray, Bedrock Blue, Lime Stone and Pebble Pink. You can get it from Apple’s website for $59.

The new collection also includes a basic case that Beats describes as “thin, light, and precisely crafted.” It’s available in the same colors, with the same matte hard outer shell that prevents fingerprints and an interior microfiber lining. This model will set you back $45 and is the only one in the collection that you can get for the iPhone Air.

Finally, the Beats iPhone 17 Rugged Case with MagSafe & Camera Control will give you some extra protection if you tend to drop your devices. Beats designed it with a rugged polymer backing that’s complemented by impact-absorbing sidewalls. It has an enclosed bottom for enhanced protection and a textured matte exterior to give you a good grip on your phone. The manufacturer said it put the case through repeated drop and scratch tests, as well as multiple thermal, mechanical and chemical tests to simulate real world use. Beats’ rugged case is available in Everest Black, Rocky Blue, Alpine Gray and Sierra Orange for $79.

Strategy Stock Falls as Robinhood Beats It to S&P 500 Inclusion

by admin September 5, 2025

Michael Saylor’s Strategy (MSTR) missed out on being added to the S&P 500 index on Friday, despite hopes of inclusion after the company posted one of the strongest quarters in its history and met all criteria for joining the index.

The stock of the largest corporate bitcoin BTC$110,637.97 holder declined nearly 3% after market hours, erasing all of Friday’s gains. The inclusion would have been a significant milestone for the company and for the industry as it would have exposed millions of average investors and portfolio managers to the company, potentially acting as a bullish catalyst.

In a surprise move on Friday, the digital trading platform Robinhood (HOOD), with growing crypto ambitions, was included in the S&P 500 index, driving the stock 7% higher after the market close. The changes will go into effect on September 22.

Before Friday, only two crypto-linked stocks were part of the index: Crypto exchange Coinbase (COIN) and Jack Dorsey’s Block (XYZ). Robinhood will now be added to this coveted list.

Tether’s USDT Revenue Hits $148.99M This Week, Beats Circle USDC

by admin August 28, 2025

Tether’s stablecoin USDT is currently dominating the crypto market, USDT, which has made $148.98 million in the past week, according to DefiLlama.

This figure outpaces its competitors, with Circle earning $49.25 million, Hyperliquid $31.18  million, Tron $13.96  million, and Pump.fun $12  million, which makes Tether the leader in the US-dollar-backed stablecoin.

Tether has an approximate of 100 employees, but its output is remarkable. To put it in perspective, JPMorgan Chase made a profit of $8.5 billion employing more than 317,000 people, which highlights the high profitability of a small scale in the case of Tether.

Its growth aspirations are supported by the fact that the firm has reserves of $162.57 billion. Tether is going global and particularly in Asia where the adoption of digital assets is increasing.

Despite the good performance, the company continues to be under regulatory scrutiny and combats fraud, most recently collaborating with blockchain companies to freeze up to $23 million in illegal USDT.

The increase in revenue is due to increased crypto trading and new stablecoin issues, which also increase the overall market activity. Meanwhile, rivals like Circle USDC face hurdles, further strengthening Tether’s lead in the stablecoin market.

Investors closely monitor Tether as it innovates, carefully balancing growth with regulatory requirements in a fast-moving market. Its robust performance underscores the growing importance of stablecoins like USDT in both crypto trading and global finance.

The translucent Beats Studio Buds Plus are half off

by admin August 22, 2025

Noise-canceling earbuds are great productivity tools, blocking out noisy roommates and busy coffee shops so you can focus on studying or work. While there are a number of great options these days, few are as eye-catching like the translucent Beats Studio Buds Plus. And right now, you can buy the stylish wireless earbuds for just $84.99 from Woot — a 50 percent discount and the best price we’ve seen outside of a brief drop to $63 earlier in June.

The wireless earbuds are some of our favorites, and not just because they look cool. Despite the fact Apple owns Beats, they play well with both iOS and Android devices. They don’t support every software feature — like Apple’s automatic device switching — but they still offer perks like one-tap pairing and integration with each platform’s respective Find My networks. Their sound quality also comes close to matching the latest AirPods Pro, and their active noise-cancellation does a good job of tuning out distractions — even if it’s not as powerful as Apple’s premium earbuds.

The Beats Studio Buds Plus are also comfortable, arriving with four swappable silicone ear tips. You also get IPX4 water resistance, as well as up to six hours of battery life on a single charge with ANC enabled. While we wish they also offered wireless charging and multipoint Bluetooth connectivity, all in all they’re a well-rounded option that can help you focus while looking good — especially if you own both iOS and Android devices.

Nothing Beats Our Editors’ Favorite Office Chair, and It’s on Sale Now

by admin August 21, 2025

Office chairs can be surprisingly expensive, easily breaking $1,000 for a seaworthy seat. The Branch Ergonomic Chair Pro, with a list price of just $500, beat out a number of expensive seats from some very recognizable chair makers to earn the top spot on our office chair roundup. For labor day, Branch is offering 10% off when you use code LABORDAY on the base price of the chair, as well as any accessories you might want to add on, plus free shipping, so you can build the ultimate home office.

Branch

Ergonomic Chair Pro

Unlike some other less expensive chairs, the Ergonomic Chair Pro features an absolute raft of adjustment options. Take the armrests, for example, which have vertical, forward and back, and angular adjustments, or the seat depth, which has both depth and tilt options, and of course there’s an adjustable lumbar support.

Branch doesn’t cut corners on materials, with a powder-coated aluminum base and casters that roll smoothly on hardwood floors. There are fabric, real leather, and vegan leather options in a variety of neutral or natural colors, another option typically reserved for chairs more than twice the price.

There are a variety of discounted accessories that might put some wind in your sails. Our editor thought the headrest was a bit unnecessary, but as a 6’4″ person, appreciated the tall cylinder to sit a little higher on the waves. Whichever route you choose to navigate, you’ll save a bit of cash, which is always great when you’re picking up an expensive new piece of furniture.

Ready to keelhaul your current bridge? Branch is offering an extra five percent, for a total 15% discount, if you also pick up a desk to go with your new chair. The Branch Four Leg Standing Desk is our editors’ favorite standing desk, with an elegant, understated design and a variety of options for its rounded plywood tops. Accessories for the desk are marked down as well, although I didn’t see anything particularly exciting or unique there.

The discounts on Branch’s chairs, desks, and accessories, as well as the additional bundle discount, are already live and run until September 5th. The website says to use the promo code LABORDAY, but I saw the discounts automatically displayed on items as I browsed the site. Just make sure you see the free shipping and discounted price when you check out.
