Battlefield 6 devs knew ‘everything’ would leak from playtests but said the risk was worth it to get feedback from players: ‘That had to come at any cost’

Game developers, generally speaking, don’t like leaks. Infinity Nikki studio Infold, for instance, recently described leaks as “poison to all creation.” That’s maybe a bit much, but it does capture the broad sentiment: When you’re working on something that’s meant to be a surprise, and someone blows that surprise, it sucks.

Developers do what they can to prevent leaks, but sometimes there’s just no getting around it. Such is the case with Battlefield 6: Technical director Christian Buhl told IGN that Ripple Effect (formerly DICE LA) “did not want leaks,” but it did want as much feedback from players as possible—and that meant rolling the dice.

“We had, actually, discussions, I think about a year or two ago,” Buhl said. “I guess it was maybe about two years ago, about how much we were going to do to prevent leaks versus how much we were going to do to get the game in front of players. We made a very deliberate decision that we were going to bias very heavily towards putting things in front of players and getting their feedback, even though we knew things would leak.”

Sure enough, that’s exactly what happened: The Battlefield Labs program is technically a closed testing platform, but it’s been leaking like a sieve pretty much from the word go. That came as no surprise to developers—Buhl said he made a “big presentation” at one point where he asked rhetorically, and answered, “What will leak? Everything”—and it was ultimately viewed as a necessary price to pay: “We weren’t seeking leaks, but we knew that the most important thing was to get the game in front of players, get real feedback from players, get real telemetry, real data, and that had to come at any cost, including the fact that things would leak.”

Feedback from players is undoubtedly vital, especially when you’re making a game that aims to compete with the Call of Duty juggernaut. But there’s another significant benefit, as PC Gamer’s Morgan Park pointed out back in May when he wrote, “the Battlefield subreddit is an endless feed of leaked Battlefield 6 gameplay, and it might be the best marketing campaign of 2025.”

Leaks generate excitement that promotional trailers and developer streams can’t, because they’re “real” in a way that carefully curated marketing campaigns simply are not. And if that excitement generates demand for even more leaked material going forward, that has to be a lot better than people ignoring your game because nobody cares.

Battlefield Studios has shared lots more official information about Battlefield 6’s battle royale mode, including match sizes, gameplay systems, and how the game has the “deadliest ring” in the genre. Battlefield Studios will allow people to try the battle royale mode before it is released through the Battlefield Labs testing program, so be sure to sign up for a chance to play early.

“We see a great opportunity to infuse the core Battlefield pillars of class-based squadplay, tactical destruction, and vehicle combat into the battle royale genre to create a high-stakes and adrenaline pumping gameplay experience,” the developer said. “This is Battlefield’s twist on the classic formula, so you can expect to find all of the core principles of Battlefield taking place within this mode; gadgets, explosives, destructible environments, and vehicles can all be used to secure the win.”

Battlefield 6’s battle royale map, which doesn’t have an official name yet, was built specifically for battle royale, the developer said, and it will feature a “diverse array” of points of interest that provide “unique gameplay opportunities.”

The mode will have vehicles, too, including “common” transport vehicles and “powerful armored vehicles to turn the tide of battle.” Battlefield Studios said the goal is to “offer more ways for players to traverse the map early on in a match and to create interesting combined arms action in the process.” The battle royale mode will also carry forward Battlefield’s trademark destruction elements, allowing people to blast down walls to gain the advantage.

“We look forward to seeing players’ ingenuity with destruction and how they use it to defeat their opponents,” the developer said. In this new battle royale test, matches will be composed of 100 players, divided into 25 four-player squads. The goal, as you might have guessed, is to be the last squad alive. Battlefield 6’s battle royale mode also supports “second chances,” as Support class players can revive downed allies, while the game also has “Mobile Redeploy” options to stay alive longer.

In terms of what Battlefield Studios is calling the “deadliest ring in BR,” the studio said the ring will instantly kill players upon contact. In other games, including Call of Duty: Warzone, you can survive outside the ring for a period of time. “With urgent warnings as the fire approaches, soldiers will be pushed into more intense firefights as the game space continues to shrink,” the developer said. “There’s no jumping in and out of it, no using it for cover, no walking through it–if you get caught in it, you are done. We’re excited to see how the ring affects the pace of the game and how it creates spontaneous showdowns.”

Battlefield’s class system will carry forward to battle royale, so players can pick a class and assemble a team however they see fit between the Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon classes. Once a match begins, however, players cannot change their class for the duration of the match.

Each class gets two default gadgets from their chosen class to begin a match, and then during matches, players earn XP by defeating players and completing missions. Each class has a “Training” element to it as well, and as players level up their Training, they’ll get new traits that “enhance” a given class. “One example would be the Assault class being faster in equipping an armor plate which makes them harder to defeat in their next (or current) firefight,” the developer said.

In terms of weapons and items, there are five tiers of weapons to loot, as well as attachments, throwable items like frag grenades, gadgets, strike packages, armor, upgrade kits, and “custom drops of favorited weapons.”

“These items can be found across the experience through general loot crates, class-specific crates, unlocking armored trucks, mission rewards, or looting defeated enemies,” Battlefield Studios said.

Battlefield 6 battle royale matches will also include “Missions” that squads can work together to complete for extra rewards. “Tasks range from unlocking high-value caches to planting explosives to eliminate mission-critical targets. Mission details will outline the available rewards like a weapons cache, vehicle key, or Mobile Redeploy unit, leaving it up to each squad to decide if the risk is worth the potential reward,” the developer said. “Once the mission objective is complete, rewards are airdropped in, so squads should stay alert for others who may attempt to steal them.”

The upcoming Battlefield Labs test for the battle royale mode requires players to sign an NDA and agree to not share gameplay footage, but if history is any indication, there will be lots of leaks.

Battlefield 6 launches on October 10 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. There is no word yet when the battle royale mode could be released, or if it’s a premium game that’s part of Battlefield or a standalone download.

Battlefield Studios has officially unveiled the first details of the Battlefield 6 battle royale mode, which was first announced in August at the game’s multiplayer reveal event. At the time, the developer didn’t confirm its official name, or really discuss any of its aspects.

It did announce, however, that the mode would be coming to Battlefield Labs, the community testing environment that’s been running in the background since February. That moment has now arrived.

In a blog post, the developer revealed some key, top-level goals for Battlefield 6’s battle royale mode. It still doesn’t officially have a name, but the post essentially makes it sound like a modern version of Battlefield 5’s Firestorm battle royale mode, with some features from Call of Duty: Warzone.

Destruction will play a key role in the mode, of course, but you can also expect many of the core game’s gadgets and vehicles to be present – including ways to acquire armored vehicles for late-game situations.

Anyone who played games like PUBG, Apex Legends, or Fortnite should be very familiar with how it’s going to flow. The post confirms respawn mechanics, for instance.

That said, this iteration comes with its own interesting twists on the battle royale formula. For one, classes from the multiplayer side will be present here, with one example being the Support’s ability to revive downed teammates.

Indeed, classes in general will play a larger role than you might expect. Each member of the squad gets to choose the class they’re going to play as, just like traditional multiplayer. These choices cannot be changed after the match has begun.

Each player starts the match with two gadgets from their class, and they’re able to level up during the match to unlock new Traits (like faster armor plate equip speed) for use within the same match. Throughout the game, there’ll be ways to earn XP, such missions with a variety of goals.

Battlefield 6’s BR mode will, of course, feature an ever-encroaching ring of fire that gradually makes the playable area smaller and smaller. Unlike most BR games, however, this one will instantly kill anyone caught outside of it, eliminating any out-of-ring play.

Ground loot is present, split across five tiers of rarities. Attachments appear to be separate lootable items this time around, which is an interesting change. Outside of other, expected items, you’ll also come across Strike Packages, which are effectively killstreaks.

Unfortunately, the mode will also allow players to bring in custom weapons from multiplayer, which can be called in using an item found in loot chests and on the ground.

This particular test will focus only on four-player squads, with a maximum of 100 players in each match. It’s not clear how high the player count is going to be in the final version, but 100 is within expectations for BR modes.

Battlefield Studios promised to return later to share more after feedback has been collected, and it’s certainly going to be interesting to see how players respond to some of that.

Better for Battlefield 6 vehicles to start off “too weak”, says producer to players sore about tooled-up engineers

In my experience, there are two kinds of tank in Battlefield games. There are the ones driven by other people, which are cut from solid granite yet move like ballet dancers. And then there are the ones driven by me, which are made out of candy floss and handle like shopping trolleys. Possibly, this reflects some kind of underlying “skill issue”, but come now, that’s speculative reporting that flies in the face of logic. Clearly it’s a balancing issue. Here’s Battlefield 6 lead producer David Sirland with a little more, based on learnings during the new shooter’s multiplayer beta.


You may have found that the tanks, helicopters, jeeps and jets on show in said Battlefield 6 beta were somewhat squishy, versus the hardiness of infantry and especially, engineers equipped with anti-tank mines and rockets. Responding to an aggrieved Xitter post (as reported by PCGamer), Sirland acknowledged that there’s a balancing issue here, but also, suggested that developers DICE, Ripple, Motive and Criterion may have lowballed the rides to begin with, in order to set a good foundation.


“That is a balance issue wholesale, not specific to this special situation however,” he wrote, when one user complained about the potency of said engineers and their dastardly munitions. “And one we are actively working on. Rather have too weak vehicles over too powerful to start. Its a tricky one as players get better at using them over time as well.”


I find this both funny and interesting. Funny because Battlefield 6 has made a drinking game out of slaughtering vehicles in trailers: those choppers certainly don’t seem fit for much besides blowing up. And interesting because it’s a quick glimpse into the ever-gripping intricacies of game balancing.

There is arguably no such thing as “good balance” inasmuch as balancing is an on-going process – developers have to keep adjusting the mixture to keep up with the ingenuity and quirks of clashing groups of players, while hazily targeting some kind of optimal all-round experience. Sirland’s aside has made me consider the prospect that developers might deliberately ship a game they consider ‘unbalanced’ because they’re trying to anticipate how player behaviour might evolve. They’re trying to balance for how people will be playing in a few month’s time, perhaps. A fearful gamble, indeed.


Add these insights to EA’s longer, official account of how they’re changing Battlefield 6 based on the beta playtest. There are vehicle-heavy maps coming in future Battlefield Labs playtests, so we can get another sense of the curiously variable sponginess of those tanks, which assuredly has nothing to do with the steadiness of my thumbs.

The final game will release on October 10th. The single player story sees the US army trying to save NATO from a rogue PMC, which I think is a bit daft given the current US administration’s foreign policies.

You know something is off in Battlefield when piloting a multi-million dollar metal box with a building-leveling cannon mounted on the end is a bigger risk than hoofing it across the map.

That was the state of last month’s Battlefield 6 beta: tanks, helicopters, jets, and especially jeeps could never get much room to vroom before getting blasted by any number of anti-armor rockets, laser-guided missiles, stationary cannons, mines, or sticky explosives.

A month ahead of launch, we have our first acknowledgement from DICE that vehicle balance needs work via lead producer David Sirland.

The exchange began with a video of leaked Operation Firestorm gameplay depicting an engineer sniping and firing rockets from the map’s highest tower. To critics of Battlefield 6’s controversial “open weapons” default ruleset, the scenario is a perfect example of why letting any class use any gun disrupts the balance of Battlefield.

“A classic demonstration of why open classes don’t work. Support with ammo resupply/sniper, and APS gadget and engi[neer] with sniper/launchers on Firestorm getting constantly resupplied. It just creates these ridiculously broken combinations,” wrote Battlefield YouTuber GhostGaming.

Sirland, not usually one to acknowledge leaked gameplay, offered a retort.

“That button still exists (as in the originals) & the fact we have more [anti-tank] on the map isn’t really a problem either?” Sirland wrote. “Let’s not pretend this type of gameplay is effective in any shape or form, it really isn’t (unless you can safeguard the pos – which can be cleansed with fire :)”

Whether or not you agree with Sirland’s assessment—if you ask me, an engineer holding a sniper rifle is an affront to the very idea of the class system—it was Sirland’s next response, pivoting toward vehicles/anti-air in general, that’s most interesting.

Responding to someone who made the point that engineers carrying up to five rockets and powerful anti-tank mines means “infantry is more dangerous to vehicles than vehicles are to infantry,” Sirland agreed it’s a balance problem that the studio is currently grappling with.

Perhaps that’s true of tanks, APCs, and aerial vehicles, but what about my poor jeep? For four long days, I watched hundreds of teammates ignore my honks of friendship, opting to run an extra 30 seconds instead of climbing aboard. Give those gunners some armor plating at least!

We’ll see what’s in store for rocket pockets and vehicle armor when Battlefield 6 launches October 10.

Will this month’s rumored Nintendo Direct finally be the big one that gives us a peak at all the big new games the company has planned for Switch 2? Battlefield 6 battle royale leak shows swimming, sledgehammers, and more

Roughly nine minutes of new footage of Battlefield 6 recently leaked showing off more of its battle royale mode. The map looks massive and the gameplay shows swimming and shooting while in the water. There’s also a dual-purpose ladder gizmo and smashing through a concrete wall with a sledgehammer.

Will it be better than Warzone? Will anyone care? “Can’t wait to play 1 single round of this then go back to the real Battlefield and never touch it again,” wrote one fan on Reddit.

September Nintendo Direct rumors intensify

According to podcast host and industry leaker NateTheHate, rumors of a mid-September Nintendo Direct are accurate. “Yes, there is a Nintendo Direct in September,” he posted over the weekend. “When: The second week of the month, in the latter half on or around Sept 11 or 12th.” That’s a week before the previous rumored date.

Where the hell is that Final Fantasy 9 remaster?

Producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida has been a busy man. Alongside getting philosophical about modding in Final Fantasy 14  and opening up PAX West with a story time about how the Mario Bros. arcade game taught him about PVP, he’s also penned a short Q&A celebrating the 25th anniversary of FF9. He’s still not tipping his hand about the long-rumored remaster, but he did confess he’s still searching for the meaning of life just like Vivi.

Fairgames lost its game director

Daniel Drapeau left the PlayStation studio Haven to join Warner Bros. Montreal. It comes a few months after studio manager Jade Raymond left as well amid a reported delay of the multiplayer heist game due to poor internal feedback.

Bungie’s super-secret Marathon test will pay $500

That’s according to emails sent out to some fans, TheGamePost reports. They have to play the sci-fi extraction shooter at least one hour every day for a month. Clearly concerned about leaks, the test will also reportedly take place on Bungie’s internal development servers rather than Steam. Players even have to submit their IP addresses to Bungie for clearance.

You Can Get Battlefield 6 Cosmetics In The New Battlefield 2042 Battle Pass

In celebrating the legacy of Battlefield, EA recently released a new battle pass for Battlefield 2042. Called “Road to Battlefield 6”, it features unlockable skins and cosmetic items that represent different games in the series. What’s most notable about the pass–beyond the fact that’s completely free–is that it also includes 20 item unlocks for the upcoming Battlefield 6.

Like most battle passes, the unlockable items are grouped into levels or tiers. In Tier 8, for instance, players will be able to unlock a Battlefield 1 era player card background, card icon, weapon package and more. There are even a few vehicle and soldier skins up for grabs at the later levels; fans looking to unlock the Aurora Vehicle Skin from Battlefield Bad Company 2, for instance, can do so after hitting Tier 30.

Many Battlefield 6 Fans Played Beta Using Minimum Specs, Says EA

According to EA, the Battlefield 6 play test is the biggest beta in Battlefield’s history in terms of players. Research firm Oppenheimer estimated that the beta reached more than 20 million people. However, a “substantial number” of those fans may have been playing Battlefield 6 with the minimum recommended specs.

Battlefield 6 technical director Christian Buhl made that assertion during an interview with Eurogamer. Buhl also noted that EA and DICE planned from the beginning to ensure that players using lower-end hardware would still receive a comparable experience to those on high-end machines.

“Min spec is certainly one of our most important specs … it’s super important from both a commercial and business perspective,” said Buhl. “We want as many people as possible playing the game … We did a lot of analysis, we did tests on the game on a wide range of hardware above and below our minimum and recommended specs. We figured out what we can hit, what we need to hit from a business perspective, and that was to capture a wide audience on PC. It’s been super critical.”

In the same interview, Buhl addressed the game’s unpopular secure boot requirement, which he says is critical to fighting cheaters.

“The fact is I wish we didn’t have to do things like Secure Boot,” said Buhl. “It does prevent some players from playing the game. Some people’s PCs can’t handle it and they can’t play: that really sucks. I wish everyone could play the game with low friction and not have to do these sorts of things … Unfortunately these are some of the strongest tools in our toolbox to stop cheating.”

EA has shared the PC specs for Battlefield 6, as well as some upcoming changes to based on player feedback from the beta. Battlefield 6 launches on October 10 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.

Battlefield 6’s open beta may be over, Battlefield 2042 might also have been transformed into Battlefield 6, but there must be more battles in the fields of six, so sign-ups for another round of Labs testing are now open. Two fresh maps with plenty of room for vehicle-based fisticuffs will be on offer, as well as a chance to check out the server browser that may well be chock full of 24/7 scraps once the final game launches.

EA have wheeled out all of this info in two separate blog posts, which follow neatly on from them running down all of their learnings from the open beta.

First of all, the two maps. Operation Firestorm and Mirak Valley are set to debut, and if you were among the many miffed at the open beta largely sticking to smaller maps, you’ll be glad to hear that they facilitate larger scraps with “a diverse range of vehicles, from quad bikes to tanks and aircraft”.

As you might expect, their inclusion’s part of EA working to ensure “balancing occurs across different-sized environments” following the open beta. “Improvements to weapons, large-scale vehicular combat, gadget balancing, and more” are all on the publisher’s radar to monitor and tweak. This round of testing’ll also be used to lock in “the official setting for Hardcore mode”, so put on your best killing pants.

If you hop into this latest Labs test, you’ll also get your first chance to muck around with a work-in-progress version of Battlefield 6’s server browser. Its features will be “intentionally limited” so EA can focus on making sure it’s stable and useable at a basic level. Basically, making sure folks can set up a server via a shortcode, fill out its description and tags, then host away trouble-free as other players join and leave.

Those who’ve grown up jumping into 24/7 servers that serve you one map on repeat and don’t disappear when everyone goes to bed at the end of the first day will be glad to know EA have confirmed custom servers will be persistent. It won’t cost you any extra over the base price of the FPS either, which is a nice bit of non-money-grabbing from EA, and should mean Battlefield 6 has less trouble establishing a strong sense of community out of the gate.

If you’ve not taken part in any Battlefield 6 Labs tests to this point, you can head here to sign up. Though, there’s no guarantee you’ll be granted access either right away or at all, as the spots are much more limted than the open beta.

Battlefield 6 dev says “a significant number” of users played the game below the minimum recommended specs, as EA points to the importance of weaker hardware

A “substantial number” of Battlefield 6 open beta players were playing on or around the minimum recommended specs, according to technical director Christian Buhl.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Bulh broke down some user data for the initial wave of PC players who hopped into the game earlier this month, stating that of the “millions of players” who were jumping in, a sizable portion of them were doing so on lower-end hardware.

Speaking about some of the lengths Battlefield Studios and EA went to to ensure the game was playable by those on older setups, Buhl stated: “We built maps, and had to go to our artists and tech artists to adjust these maps so they were more performant. We’ve put in a lot of effort across the board to make sure these performance targets were set, and whether you’re on min spec or ultra spec you’re going to get the experience we’re targeting.”

When asked how important it is to serve minimum spec players at a time when PC hardware is getting more expensive, due to bloated prices or general economic challenges right now, Buhl responded by saying: “Min spec is certainly one of our most important specs […] it’s super important from both a commercial and business perspective – we want as many people as possible playing the game.”

Buhl continued with an anecdote from earlier in the game’s development: “We did a lot of analysis, we did tests on the game on a wide range of hardware above and below our minimum and recommended specs. We figured out what we can hit, what we need to hit from a business perspective, and that was to capture a wide audience on PC. It’s been super critical.”

When asked what percentage of players were playing at or around that min spec, Buhl could not recall the exact number, dubbing it a “meaningful percentage”. He also noted a number of players below the minimum spec, emphasizing the existence of this group.

In a follow up email after the interview, EA PR would not provide the exact number, pointing to Buhl’s prior statement that it was a “substantial number” of players

The current state of affordable computing in the USA, Battlefield 6’s primary market, is one of turmoil. Not only has a cost-of-living crisis made the price tag on high end hardware unpalatable for a sizable number of gaming enthusiasts, ongoing political policy has had a drastic impact on international trade.

Buhl also spoke to Eurogamer about the anti-cheat used in Battlefield 6, it’s ability to curb a sizable portion of cheaters during the betas, and the reality that some players weren’t able to play due to Secure Boot requirements. Nonetheless, this beta proved exceptionally popular, taking the title as most popular Battlefield beta of all time.
