“This is the endgame” Helldivers 2’s battle for Super Earth has entered its “final phase”, with agonising failure triggering an “all-out assault” on the final four cities

by admin May 27, 2025

Time must fly when you’re having fun. Or at least when you’re defending Super Earth from a huge Illuminate invasio. Helldivers 2’s latest major order is the “final phase” of the battle for the divers’ home planet that’s been raging since the Heart of Democracy update dropped on May 20.

I must admit, I thought the Galactic War twist that’s brought the biggest number of Helldivers back to the game of any update it’s gotten so far would last a bit longer than three MOs. Then again, this is Helldivers 2 – the war ain’t anywhere close to over while there are still troops on the march and enemies to surf on.

First of all, the last major order, which expired earlier today, was a proper heartbreaker. After casually killing 2.5 billion Illuminate in the first stage of Super Earth’s defense, players weren’t quite able to successfully extract from missions against the Illuminate 20 million times. They got damn close, though.

So, with that, while the divers have worn the Illuminate fleet’s strength down to an estimated “24% of its original operating power”, only four of Super Earth’s seven Mega Cities are left standing. Yep, two more have joined the brilliantly-named Eagleopolis as smouldering wrecks.

Cue Arrowhead’s latest order, which declares the third phase of Super Earth’s defense to be the final one. “High Command anticipates an all-out assault to take the final four Mega Cities,” the studio wrote, “The Illuminate have spent a century preparing for this invasion; they will hold back nothing. What has come before was the preamble; this is the endgame…The Helldivers have their orders: HOLD Super Earth.”

MAJOR ORDER: The Battle for Super Earth enters its final phase. The survival of Freedom hangs in the balance.

For days on end, we have defied annihilation. We have resisted Tyranny. We have demonstrated the unified might of Managed Democracy.

The cost has been grievous.… pic.twitter.com/vFRBOH62xG

In order to do that, players’ll need to dig in on Super Earth against the squids, while also scrapping 200 million Automatons so they can bring the Democracy Space Station back online to aid that first bit. As of writing, nearly 98 million bots have already been bashed in since the order debuted this morning.

Folks are seemingly going all out, no doubt buoyed by the fact today’s little Helldivers 2 patch – 01.003.003 – made a very popular change to the Reinforced Epaulettes passive that comes with the armour sets from the recently deployed Masters of Ceremony Warbond. As well as making your limbs less likely to snap like twigs, you’ll now be able to reload your primary weapon 30% faster and do 50% more melee damage when rocking the Parade Commander and Honorary Guard sets.

Cue celebrations on Reddit.

Are you planning on jumping in to help out with this final phase of Super Earth saving? Let us know below!

Marathon is fighting the ultimate uphill battle

by admin May 25, 2025

Ever since its initial reveal, Marathon has had an air of skepticism surrounding it by the gaming community at large. At first, I mostly attributed this to Bungie’s uneven approach to handling its premier live service franchise, Destiny. Between decisions like removing past expansions, vaulting weapons, and more underwhelming updates than positive ones, I could completely understand the hesitancy around the studio attempting to launch and maintain a second live service game.

As we’ve inched closer and closer to its release date, the general outlook seems to have only gotten more dismal. Yes, there have been some very concerning controversies that shouldn’t be swept under the rug, but Marathon is suffering from a more systemic problem with live service games as a whole that it will need to overcome to succeed.

The trust is broken

Live service games are labelled as such because they’re meant to be living, evolving experiences that players can keep coming back to for months and years. MMORPGs were the progenitors of this model, but now we’ve seen it applied to all sorts of genres. Despite its ups and downs, Destiny is still the poster child for what we now call live service games and the model so many have tried to imitate.

As with anything successful in the gaming industry, it wasn’t long before every big player wanted a piece of that pie. The allure of a perpetual money-maker was too great to resist, despite the reality being much more complicated. Sony was arguably the one to invest the most heavily in the model, at one point boasting over 12 live service games in the works. Between released and cancelled projects, that number has shrunk to possibly two, those being Marathon and Fairgames. While we can’t discuss the broken trust between gamers and the current and upcoming slate of live service games without mentioning Concord, the root of the problem goes back much further than that.

The first game I recall raising major red flags in the gaming sphere was Anthem. Even before all the behind-the-scenes problems in development were brought to light about the game, fans were leery about a studio known for RPGs seemingly trying to hop onto the latest trend. Anthem launched to a less-than-stellar response and quickly went on life support. It failed to satisfy BioWare’s core RPG fans or any potential Destiny converts due to a lack of both a satisfying story or a compelling endgame grind. Before launch, EA shared a roadmap calendar detailing three acts of content, and when nothing beyond Act 1 was released for over a year, BioWare promised a major overhaul of the game, unofficially called Anthem 2.0.

All of these plans were cancelled.

Firewalk Studios

Since then, we’ve seen more major games make bold claims about months and years of future content, only to pull the rug out from players after a middling — or downright abysmal — launch. Examples include Redfall, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and, of course, Concord. That last one is likely the one that broke the camel’s back for most gamers due to how unprecedented it was. This was a PlayStation first-party release with prime showcase placement, an ambitious roadmap of content, an experimental storytelling method, and even a tie-in episode in Secret Level before the game had even come out.

That game failing would be bad, but it being scrubbed from existence is catastrophic for gamers’ trust in PlayStation and live service as a whole. Not only do we have to be concerned about a game simply breaking all promises of support, but also the entire experience being ripped from us. While I don’t think the sins of one game should be borne by another, I can’t blame anyone who has adopted a more wait-and-see approach to new live service games. If we can’t count on a name as big as PlayStation to make good on its promises, why should we think differently for any other studio?

Trust isn’t given anymore, it needs to be earned.

The impressions I have seen from both major pundits and average players in forums for Marathon feel a lot like what the sentiment was for Concord before launch. The general feelings appear to float around a “it’s pretty fun to play, but there’s not enough there right now” type of vibe. Justified or not, that’s a death sentence for a game that relies on a large population of people being willing to support the game at its weakest so that it can even attempt to reach its full potential.

Gamers have long memories — at least when it comes to being burned. A roadmap and a “trust us” from the development team just doesn’t cut it anymore. Marathon could very well have the potential to be amazing, but it has to start out great to even have a chance to get there. Not enough people will settle for even good, and with so many people perfectly content sitting on the sidelines to see if it fails before it even gets off the ground, it will result in a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Bungie shouldn’t be let off the hook for blatant plagiarism or the apparent crashing moral at the studio. Rumors swirling about how the unrealistic amount of money it needs to make to be considered a success don’t help either, but Marathon‘s fate wouldn’t look any more certain even if that had never occurred. Until enough live service games earn our trust back, each game is fighting an uphill battle that gets steeper with every failed attempt.

Eagleopolis has fallen despite Helldivers 2 players slapping up 2.5 billion squids for an opening victory in the battle for Super Earth, leaving six Mega Cities to defend

by admin May 23, 2025

Do you want the good news or the bad news first? Well, good news, Helldivers 2 managed to win the first major order of the battle for Super Earth by slaughtering over two billion Illuminate. The bad news? It’s not stopped Eagleopolis from falling.

As it turns out, not even the biggest number of Helldivers the game’s had since last spring diving in to help try and hold off the invasion of fresh Illuminate baddies was enough to stop one of Super Earth’s seven Mega Cities being reduced to ruins. It’s ok, don’t cry. Hug your SEAF buddy and watch a clip of someone surfing on a Leviathan if that’ll help.

The previous major order, which was the Helldivers’ initial defense of Super Earth after the Illuminate invasion of their home planet began with the arrival of the Heart of Democracy update, ended this morning. Things looked good, the goal of casually killing 2.5 billion Illuminate had been achieved. Let the good times roll right?

Nope, said Arrowhead. “Eagleopolis, a venerable stronghold of Managed Democracy since time immemorial, lies in ruins,” the studio informed us all via its latest MO briefing, “Its tattered shopping centers stand in warning as to the fate that awaits the rest of Super Earth, should our mission fail.”

So, that’s one of the seven Mega Cities which make up Super Earth destroyed, but there’s still a long way to go in the battle for Super Earth, and that win has seen folks make some progress towards wiping out the entire Illuminate fleet or forcing it to retreat.

“Illuminate Fleet Strength currently stands at 49%,” Arrowhead continued, “Six Mega Cities remain standing. The Helldivers must dig in, alongside their SEAF allies, and continue to fight, day and night, to defend the heart of our Federation. The surviving Mega Cities must be defended at all costs. The Helldivers must deploy to the Mega Cities as Illuminate pressure shifts among them to prevent them from falling. Once they fall, they cannot be reclaimed.”

Hence the latest order’s goal – successfull extract from missions against the Illuminate 20 million times, in order to strike a further blow to the fleet’s big invisible health bar. And, of course, to avenge Eagleopolis, which I’m sure people on the game’s subreddit would be cut up about if they weren’t too busy post fan art about loving their SEAF trooper buddies in a fashion that totally isn’t getting a bit creepy.

Are you shedding super tears for Eagleopolis? Let us know below!

Off The Grid, The Cyberpunk Battle Royale From District 9 Director Neill Blomkamp, Hits Steam Next Month

by admin May 21, 2025

Gunzilla Games has announced that Off The Grid, its cyberpunk battle royale featuring a narrative by District 9 director Neill Blomkamp, is coming to Steam in June. It launched into Early Access on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via the Epic Games Store last October, and now, it’s coming to Steam via Early Access as well.

As part of the Steam launch, Off The Grid will support full crossplay across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, allowing players to link up regardless of where they’re playing the game. Gunzilla says it has been actively evolving the game in line with community feedback with “improved performance, refined balancing, and introduced new cybernetic limbs, weapons, locations, and game modes.”

“Bringing Off The Grid to Steam is a major milestone for us, not just because of the platform’s reach, but because it allows us to welcome an entirely new wave of players into a game that’s been built hand-in-hand with the community,” CEO and co-founder of Gunzilla Games Vlad Korolov said in a press release. “From new limbs and weapons to map expansions and performance upgrades, every major step forward has been shaped by player feedback. This launch is a celebration of that collaboration, and it’s only the beginning.”

You can wishlist Off The Grid on Steam starting today. It launches there next month, though Gunzilla did not announce the exact date.

Fortnite is back on the US App Store, as Epic and Apple’s legal battle royale over it concludes with a 55-year-old exec tweeting the word “fam”

by admin May 21, 2025

Fortnite’s available on iOS in the US again, with Epic and Apple’s legal tussle over it seemingly having concluded, at least for now. Epic Games has at least managed to get one of the outcomes it wanted out of all the hoohah, and its CEO has reponded as only he could – by letting all know we’re his “fam”.

As we’ve recently chromicled, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney launched a fresh effort to get Apple to agree to re-admit the game to its App Store following a judge issuing a pretty damning verdict against the fruit company earlier this month. The suit was actually all about payment options and the cut Apple takes of them, in case you’ve forgotten in the five years it’s rumbled on for.

Now, though, tensions have seemigly cooled, with the two sides having concluded their bickering over Fortnite’s return to the US App Store by filing a joint notice stating they have “resolved all issues”. That’s after Epic went back to the judge presiding over the case in response to the initial trouble it appeared to be having getting the game through Apple’s review process.

“Fortnite is BACK on the App Store in the U.S. on iPhones and iPads…and on the Epic Games Store and AltStore in the E.U,” Epic has since announced, “It’ll show up in Search soon!”

“We back fam,” Epic CEO Tim Sweeney, a 55-year-old exec, tweeted in response to the game making its comeback. Am I being a bit harsh suggesting that it’s a bit embarrassing for someone firmly in the dad to grandad age range to be using the word fam in reference to them getting their way in some legal wranglings over who gets the cash people spend on games that turned into an argument over one game returning to one storefront? Maybe, but does have a very ‘How do you do, fellow kids’ feel to it.

Folks in the EU have been able to enjoy iOS Fortnite again for a little while now, but this is a big day for Apple users in the states who’ve been having to get their mobile Fortnite fix by listening to this song on repeat.

You can finally talk to the AI Darth Vader that’s led Epic and Llama Productions to have an unfair labour practice charge filed against them by SAG-AFTRA.

UPDATE: “All eyes now turn to Liberty’s Heart” Helldivers 2’s big battle for Super Earth is here, as the Heart of Democracy update brings an Illuminate “Great Host” invasion

by admin May 21, 2025

UPDATE (20/05/25, 10:00 AM BST): Arrowhead has just dropped the Heart of Democracy update that leaks had previously hinted at, meaning missions on Super Earth itself have arrived.

“Fight among the towering skyscrapers and crowded streets of our home turf as the Illuminate rain down destruction all around you,” the studio wrote in a PlayStation Blog post, “Inside the city biomes, you will tackle operations and work to liberate cities together, having a significant impact on planetary campaigns.

Your mission is repel the invasion and arm some killer cannons, with Arrowhead explaining: “The might of Super Earth’s arsenal lies hidden beneath our peaceful, democratic streets. With your help, we must activate our Planetary Defense Cannons and take down the Illuminate fleet in a grand show of power.”

You’ll have help from some commandable squads of SEAF troops and have to avoid killing any of the Super Earth citizens you find running around the streets.

Original story follows:

It’s been clear since last week that Helldivers 2’s Galactic War is headed to Super Earth, with a renewed Illuminate offensive pushing towards the home planet of the Helldivers. With the conclusion of the latest major order seeing three planets fall in one fell swoop, that battle’s now imminent.

We’ll still have to see whether this fight for the ball that gifted the galaxy a militaristic force that acts quite fascisty comes with its own fresh update to the game, as leaks have suggested. Either way, though, it’s shaping up to be just as key a point in the war as you’d think.

To set up this inevitable next step in the way, the game’s latest major order has just ended with players losing three planets to The Illuminate “Great Host” at once. Widow’s Harbor, Pilen V, and New Haven – all Altus Sector worlds which are right on Super Earth’s doorstep – are now occupied by the squids.

The Helldivers just couldn’t hold them, despite what looks to have been a very valiant effort. Especially so in the case of New Haven, which looks to have fallen at the order’s climax, leaving folks either watching on in horror from orbit or planting the Super Earth flag in defiance before exfiltrating one final time with a declaration that they’ll be back.

As I was writing this, Arrowhead’s just announced a further blow – The Illuminate have “razed” Mars, forcing Helldiver training facilities to be moved to another planet.

Mars has been razed by the Illuminate. All Helldiver Training Sites across the planet, where rigorous, thorough, and safe training of the Galaxy’s Elite has long occured, have been destroyed. All these losses have got them pretty amped up to defend Super Earth too. “Super Earth’s hyper-urbanized landscapes once grew bountiful wheat. Soon, Illuminate blood shall make it fertile again,” a user with the handle Efficient_Menu_9965 wrote in one of those threads, while Diamondeye12 busted out the caps lock to bellow: “WE WILL HOLD SUPER EARTH TILL THE LAST MAN WOMAN AND CHILD.”

Arrowhead’s briefing for the order’s conclusion is every bit the ra-ra speech you’d expect with such an important clash in the offing. “Millions of Helldivers—paragons of valor, fortitude, and unshakable obedience—undaunted by a knowingly unwinnable fight, formed Democracy’s first line of defense,” the studio wrote making it clear this had not been “in vain”.

“Firstly, this heroic stand impeded the unforeseen Illuminate offensive and, in a testament to our martial superiority, reduced their estimated fleet strength by 21.5%,” it continued, “Additionally, the time secured by their sacrifice has been fully utilized: Mega Cities are now heavily fortified, garrisons reinforced by SEAF battalions recalled from distant sectors.

“The fight for our Freedom is upon us. There is no fallback. All eyes now turn to Liberty’s Heart, as the Helldivers prepare to fight for the very survival of Managed Democracy.”

So, get ready to lock and load. There’s a planet to defend, and you can’t just drop a crap tonne of mechs on your foes anymore.

Brothers Aaron, Bret renew Battle of Boones in Yankees-Rangers

NEW YORK — For the first time in two decades, the Boone brothers will be in opposite dugouts when the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers meet for a three-game series at Yankee Stadium this week.

Back in 2005, Bret Boone and little brother Aaron — whose father and grandfather were major leaguers — were in their 30s and nearing the end of their careers as third-generation players. This time, Aaron is in his eighth season as Yankees manager and Bret is in his third week as Rangers hitting coach.

To celebrate the unlikely occasion, they had dinner together Monday after not seeing each other since spending Christmas together in San Diego.

“Well, it’s new for me,” Bret said. “He actually paid the bill last night.”

Editor’s Picks

Bret, 56, had never been on a major league coaching staff before the Rangers unexpectedly called him to gauge his interest in helping their anemic offense. He quickly accepted the job and took over as hitting coach on May 5, days after the club fired offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker.

At the time, the Rangers, less than two years removed from winning the World Series with Ecker, ranked last in the American League in runs scored. The sample is tiny, but the Rangers entered Tuesday ranked seventh in the league since May 6, Boone’s first day on the job.

“He’s fit in really nicely,” said Rangers manager Bruce Bochy, who managed Bret on the 2000 San Diego Padres. “Bret’s brought some new ideals, another set of eyes and ears. And I think he’s done a really nice job of getting to know the guys, building relationships already, and he’s a pleasure to have around.”

Yankees manager Aaron Boone, left, and older brother Bret Boone, the Rangers’ hitting coach, faced off for the first time since their playing days Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. Frank Franklin II/AP

Growing up, the brothers, because they were four years apart, didn’t play together or against each other in any official capacity. But there were battles of all kinds at home.

“We used to box when we were kids, and I used to wear the headgear and he wouldn’t,” Aaron said. “So, picture, I’m probably 6, he’s probably 10. And I popped him good one time. And kind of got him upset, and he took it to me pretty good.

“And I’m starting to cry a little bit. And he’s like, ‘No, you can’t cry. We’re gonna get in trouble.’ Years later, I was thinking, ‘We’re gonna get in trouble? You’re gonna get in trouble for beating up your little brother.'”

The last time the Boone brothers went against each other at the major league level was on April 24, 2005. Bret, who was in his 14th and final season, started at second base for the Mariners and went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and a sacrifice fly. Aaron started at third base for Cleveland. He went 1-for-3 with a solo home run against Jamie Moyer for Cleveland’s only run.

Aaron, 52, played until the 2009 season. Eight years later, he was hired as Yankees manager, and he has gone on to lead the team to the postseason six times, including a World Series appearance last October. Aaron began Tuesday tied for 15th with a .584 career winning percentage.

“It was weird for me,” Bret said. “He was always Bret’s little brother. And then all of a sudden he got the Yankees job and people were saying, ‘You’re Aaron’s brother.’ I’m very proud of what he’s done.”

Before Tuesday’s game, the two brothers exchanged their respective teams’ lineup cards at home plate. They shared laughs with the umpire crew and came together for photos. Then it was all business.

“I’m sure I’ll peek over there at some point during the game,” Aaron said, “and see what his act looks like.”
