Capcom sparks backlash after putting Street Fighter 6 finals behind paywall

Capcom has announced that the 2025 Capcom Cup 12 Finals and the Street Fighter League 2025 World Championship will be streamed globally via pay-per-view, marking a significant shift from past years when the same fixtures were freely viewable.

Starting March 14, 2026, Street Fighter fans will need to purchase virtual tickets to watch the live finals. The developer confirmed the change in a September 28 X/Twitter post, specifying that free replays of matches are intended to drop one week later.

Depending on the ticket tier, prices for the pay-per-view stream range from ¥4,000 and ¥6,000 (approximately $27–$40 USD).

Fans push back against paywall

Unsurprisingly, the shift from free to pay-per-view triggered backlash from fans. The announcement on social media was met with an overwhelmingly negative reception.

It’s worth noting that Capcom already adopted the same pay-per-view model in Japan in 2024, so introducing the same model overseas isn’t as spontaneous as it may initially seem.

However, several users suggested that Capcom, as a Japanese company, hasn’t taken into account cultural differences between the two markets. “Unfortunately, the rest of the world does not have Japan’s culture. This will be the biggest PR nightmare for your brand,” one user said.

Fighting game content creators have been similarly outspoken. YouTuber Maximillian Dood released a video on September 30 titled “Capcom…what are you doing?!”

While backlash towards the company as a whole will be inevitable, Max said that the decision had “Nothing to do with the Street Fighter development team, although they’re probably going to be getting an earful over all of this stuff after the weekend is over.”

Assuming concerns don’t result in any changes to the pay-per-view model, it remains to be seen how they’ll affect viewership for future events.

Black Ops 7 devs reveal $100 Vault Edition weapons won’t change after skin backlash

Black Ops 7 developers have clarified that the Mastercraft weapons from the Vault Edition of the game won’t be updated despite the skins changing. 

There have been some iconic special edition versions of Call of Duty titles. The original Modern Warfare 2 (2009) had Night Vision Goggles as a part of its special edition, while Black Ops had a drivable RC-XD for fans to own.

Those physical special edition releases have slowed down a bit in recent years, making way for in-game skins, early access periods, and bonus CoD points as things have gone all-digital.

Black Ops 7’s Vault Edition has already undergone some changes, too. A number of the skins from the $100 edition were updated amid backlash, including the T.E.D.D. Operator. The TranZit bus driver has been updated to look more terrifying.

Mastercraft weapons won’t change in Black Ops 7

With the skins being changed, some fans wondered if the five Mastercraft weapon bluperints would also be undergoing a revamp.

However, Treyarch has clarified things, revealing that it won’t be the case. “Don’t believe. I don’t think so,” Design Director Matt Scronce told CharlieIntel when quizzed about it.

“Most of the feedback is really about the operators anyway. Right? So we do wanna make sure that those still feel lost when fun,” Treyarch’s Ben Lewis added. “I mean, if you look at the ones from BO6, they were pretty out there too.”

Treyarch.There are 5 Mastercraft blueprints in Black Ops 7’s Vault Edition.

As noted, there are five Mastercraft weapon bluperints in the Vault Edition. These are: 

  • Blank Certainty Blueprint – Peacemaker MK1 (Assault Rifle)
  • Authorized Destroyed Blueprint – Dravec 45 (SMG)
  • Dire Experiment Blueprint – M10 Breacher (Shotgun)
  • Ballistic Scyth3 Blueprint – VS RECON (Sniper Rifle)
  • Shock Blade Blueprint – Flatline Mk.II (Melee)

They will be available at launch in Multiplayer for Vault Edition owners, while the Mastercraft Weapon Collection will be available in Warzone when Season 1 kicks off.

The third initiative addresses a major customer complaint by making it easier to reach human support representatives.

Coinbase is minimizing chatbot barriers that previously frustrated users trying to escalate issues beyond automated responses.

The final component focuses on improving live support quality when human interaction becomes necessary. The company has rolled out new tools to help support staff provide faster resolutions and higher-quality assistance in real-time conversations.

Griffith reported early positive results, with customer satisfaction scores hitting an all-time high in August, up 20% over the previous two months.

The company also reduced customer contact transfers to 10%. This means fewer users need to explain their issues multiple times to different representatives.

Coinbase data breach highlights support importance

The customer service improvements come as Coinbase deals with fallout from a major data breach affecting 69,461 customers.

Court documents revealed that Ashita Mishra, a TaskUs employee, planned a conspiracy involving photographing up to 200 customer records daily and selling the data to hackers for $200 per photograph.

The breach potentially cost Coinbase between $180 million and $400 million in remediation expenses and forced the company to terminate its relationship with TaskUs.

Mishra and his accomplices accumulated data from over 10,000 customers before their arrest. They also recruited other employees, including team leaders and operations managers.

In response, Coinbase terminated all involved TaskUs employees and established a new U.S.-based customer support hub.

CEO Brian Armstrong emphasized the dual approach to support improvements and stated the company is “improving products so fewer people need support, and providing a faster, higher quality experience when you do.”

Nintendo is facing continued backlash for its pricing, but are the new Mario Galaxy re-releases on Switch really too expensive?

Hello and welcome to another entry in our “The Big Question” series, in which we present an argument to you, the Eurogamer community, for further interrogation. This week: are the new Mario Galaxy re-releases on Switch really too expensive?

We’ve become accustomed to things becoming cheaper over time, to the extent that it feels like a right. Don’t buy a car brand-new, fresh off the manufacturing line, wait for it to be traded in a year later and then buy it for huge savings. Who hasn’t scoured the sandwich chiller at the supermarket for a ropey wrap massively reduced in price because they are nearing their sell-by date? And I’m not sure there’s ever been a bigger moment in UK gaming than when Gamestation reduced the price of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim to about £20, in December 2011, less than one month after the game was released. Things should get cheaper if you wait, right? Right? I’m not sure. Let’s say it’s complicated.

The examples above aren’t exactly equivalent – a slightly stale onion baji sandwich made three days ago isn’t the same as a car being driven for 8,000 miles (mainly motorway), I know. But I think the point should be somewhat clear. Games start at one price, then get cheaper, and cheaper, until they sell for pennies. Unless you are Nintendo.

Let’s look at Nintendo’s Switch (and Switch 2) re-releases of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. £34 to buy each digitally on their own, or £59 as a bundle. This has been met with the expected amount of derision online, with the sentiment among many essentially boiling down to: How dare Nintendo charge this much for games which are 18 and 15 years old, respectively. Games which are not receiving massive overhauls, at that.

These people are wrong. Sorry. Taken at face value, games becoming cheaper is wonderful, and if a publisher wants to market towards a different audience through budget lines (RIP, PlayStation Platinum range), I think that’s great and an avenue that makes sense for certain games. But Nintendo setting the price of two iconic, borderline immaculate video games, and people arguing they aren’t worth that much money, is a very different matter. Small extra point: £34 today is about £22 in 2011.

As much as I would love all Nintendo games to reduce in price over time and save me money (a lot of money, now exacerbated by my son also wanting games), I firmly believe that Nintendo is right to keep its prices relatively high – not just with Mario Galaxy but pretty much all its first-party games. The very best games don’t age. They don’t get worse. They stand as tall today as they did on release.

I gave Mario Galaxy (the Switch version included in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection from 2020) a whirl last night, just to make sure I wasn’t being a victim of nostalgia goggles, and I was right – this is still 100 percent an incredible game, with an art style that belies its age and a joyousness in design that I think only its sequel has bettered. Frankly, £34 is a bargain that only ceases to be as such when your view on the industry is one you’ve lived through from generation to generation to generation. Present someone new to video games with Mario Galaxy and a bunch of other recent 3D platformers, and I’d be astonished if 95 percent of those surveyed didn’t pick Nintendo’s micro-planet-hopping adventure as the best and most-deserving of its price tag.

If we compare all this to how re-releases are handled in the film industry, well, you might not want to read on if you find Nintendo’s pricing policy to be too cash-grabby. As someone who has owned movies from VHS through to Ultra HD Blu-ray, on digital, and everything in-between, I’ve bought some films six times. VHS, DVD, higher-bit-rate DVD, Blu-ray, Apple TV, and Ultra HD Blu-ray. These films, mostly released back in the 80s, aren’t getting cheaper each time they release – they aren’t even getting improved that much, at least not these days when we aren’t seeing anything like the eyebrow-raising leap from VHS to DVD.

You do have options, of course. You aren’t required to buy re-releases and, unless you go back a very long way or are trying to get hold of rare games, you can fairly easily pick-up classics for way less than the marginally improved versions releasing on new hardware. The Galaxy games are not hard to buy for under £15 each. I can buy The Matrix on DVD for about the same price as a small bottle of Pepsi Max, but on Ultra HD it’ll set me back over £20. If we say the Wii is DVD, Switch is Blu-ray, and Switch 2 is UHD, and the improvements from one the next is largely in image clarity, I think the comparison stands.

My point, really, is that quality should come at a price and Nintendo has no reason to devalue its most celebrated works of art. You can argue that Nintendo has become more money-grabby of late, both in terms of pricing its Switch 2 games higher than on the Switch, and in squeezing money out of players on DLC – both its recent Donkey Kong Bananza and Switch 2 Edition upgrades to the likes of Mario Party 8 have been criticized. While increasing game prices is arguably simply adapting to market conditions, there’s a good case for the DK Island & Emerald Rush DLC feeling like it should have been in the initial game’s release.

And yet, none of this makes me think the Super Mario Galaxy releases on Switch and Switch 2 are too expensive. Great art is expensive and ultimately the argument comes down to what consumers are willing to pay to get it. Given that these two games rank among the very best ever made, and Nintendo knows this, I don’t think they are going to have any problem convincing people to part with their money.

Bloodlines 2 Won’t Lock Clans Behind Paywall After Fan Backlash

The controversy surrounding the DLC clans in the upcoming Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is finally over. The studio behind the upcoming game has confirmed that it is walking back its plans to lock two clans behind a paywall after receiving lots of “feedback,” aka people yelled at them online for a while.

Last month, Bloodlines 2 devs The Chinese Room and publisher Paradox announced at Gamescom ONL that the long-awaited vampire RPG sequel would finally arrive on PC and consoles in October. After a lengthy and messy development cycle that involved multiple studios and delays, a lot of fans were just happy that Bloodlines 2 was actually, for real, coming out.  But then folks discovered that two of the game’s six vampire clans, which essentially act as your class, were locked behind a $30 paywall. People got mad, a lot of negative headlines were posted, and about a week later, on August 27, the devs announced they were going to make some tweaks to the DLC plans. And now we know what that means: All six clans are included in the base game.

On September 17, in the YouTube description of a new Bloodlines 2 gameplay overview trailer, the executive producer on the game thanked fans for the “frank feedback” about the game’s Premium Edition DLC before confirming that none of the clans would be locked behind a day-one DLC paywall. He also praised the devs for helping create two new story packs that will now be included in the Premium Edition.

“Thanks to our community for the frank feedback on Bloodlines 2 and the Premium Edition,” said Bloodlines 2 executive producer Marco Behrmann. “That feedback made it clear: Lasombra and Toreador belong in the base game, so that is what we are doing. We’d also like to thank The Chinese Room for their quick turnaround on the concepts for the post-launch Story Packs. We’re constantly impressed by their creativity and skill in weaving enticing narrative threads that expand on the main story in Bloodlines 2.”

The two new story packs are: “Loose Cannon“ (Brujah Sheriff Benny’s story) and “The Flower & The Flame” (Toreador Primogen Ysabella’s path). The plan is for this DLC, which replaces the missing paid access to clans, to launch in 2026. And so ends the Bloodlines 2 DLC saga. Hopefully, after all of this and all the years of waiting, the game is worth it all. We’ll find out when Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 launches on Xbox, PS5, and PC on October 21.

Z-A’s DLC And Online Sub Sparks Backlash

There were plenty of really exciting announcements about Pokémon Legends: Z-A during last week’s Nintendo Direct, with fans especially thrilled that several Pokémon who probably should’ve gotten Mega Evolutions a decade ago would finally get them in the upcoming RPG. The Kalos starters and the big mouse himself, Raichu, are all getting these beefed-up transformations in Legends: Z-A after they were each snubbed when X and Y first introduced the mechanic back in 2013. However, the excitement has quickly been replaced with annoyance, as each of these new forms has both paid and skill-based gates put on them, and the base game isn’t even out yet.

Let’s start with the most straightforward one. Mega Raichu X and Y are part of Legends: Z-A’s $30 Mega Dimension DLC. This is a post-game story expansion that will introduce both Raichu Mega forms and involve Hoopa, the dimension-jumping mythical Pokémon, who is apparently opening up new dimensional rifts throughout Lumiose City. Paid DLC for Pokémon games isn’t new, as both Sword and Shield and Scarlet and Violet had them, but they weren’t announced until some time after the games launched. 

There has been some misinformation spreading, suggesting that Mega Dimension is a day-one DLC and that the new story content is ready to go and is being deliberately separated from the main game to squeeze out an extra $30 from fans, but that’s not entirely accurate. Mega Dimension is listed on the eShop as having the same October 16 release date as Legends: Z-A, but this is because buying the DLC grants you immediate access to a set of costumes, while the story content, and Mega Raichu X and Y, will be out “by February 28th, 2026.” Nevertheless, Mega Dimension raises the cost of Legends: Z-A’s set of new Mega Evolutions to $100 total if you’re buying the game on Nintendo Switch 2, as the game itself is $70.

“Paid DLC for a 70$ game that’s not even out yet.. Are you fucking kidding me…Silksong is 20 dollars btw,” a user on Reddit wrote in response to the announcement. 

“I missed when Pokémon was a full game,” another user replied. “Well into the era of scam DLCs they made full games. Even Legends Arceus is [a] post-pandemic full game. Sad to see them doing this shit, and this direction has me reconsidering a purchase of Z-A.”

DLC isn’t new, though, so there’s some precedent for Mega Raichu and any others added in Mega Dimensions that might be unveiled between now and launch to be gated behind a paywall. The Kalos starter Mega Evolutions, however, are adding a new wrinkle to completing the Pokedex that is gated behind both an additional cost and a gameplay skill check. In order to get Mega Chesnaught, Delphox, and Greninja, you’ll have to rise up the ranks in online battles, and that means you not only have to play online, but you have to win against other players. The first rub of this is that it’s another pay gate, as you’ll have to pay for an online subscription to play against other trainers through the internet. It will require at least a few months of subscribing to get all three, as each is being given out as a seasonal reward, though we don’t know how long each season will last yet. A Nintendo Online membership costs at least $3.99 a month, so you likely won’t be able to get all the Mega Evolutions the game has to offer without also spending at least $12 on a subscription.

After you’ve paid to play online, you’ll actually have to defeat other players, meaning that if you’re not a skilled competitive player who is looking to get sweaty in ranked matches, you could very well not get the Mega Stones you’re paying for. This also means you won’t be able to have any of these forms on your team during your first playthrough, which is a real bummer for folks who want to have these guys by their side as they see Legends: Z-A’s story through.

When you lay it all out, completing the Mega Pokedex in Legends: Z-A will cost, at minimum, $112 on the Switch 2. If you’re playing the game on the original Switch, that total will be 10 dollars lower as the game itself only costs $60 on older hardware. But wowza, that’s a lot of money to be asking for when the game isn’t even out yet. That’s nearly the price of two full-priced games, which is typically what The Pokémon Company asks for when it puts out each new pair of games each generation. Maybe this is the company’s way of making up for taking a year off from a mainline RPG or DLC in 2024, or perhaps The Pokémon Company has the type of greed they talk about in the Bible. One way or another, completing Legends: Z-A just got much more expensive after one Nintendo Direct, and that’s not the vibe Game Freak or The Pokémon Company probably wants with the game just a month away from launch on October 16.

Bwipo responds to backlash for comment about women’s esports and FlyQuest suspension

League of Legends professional Gabriël ‘Bwipo’ Rau has responded to backlash after he said that women shouldn’t compete in gaming while on their period.

On September 9, FlyQuest star Bwipo was plunged into hot water after making comments about women competing in League of Legends while on their period. The Belgian initially said “there’s just not enough support for female pro players” during “their monthly cycles.” However, it was his subsequent comments that sparked outrage.

“I think a lot of people, even men, get tilted out of their f**king minds when they play League of Legends. When a woman is on the wrong part of the month, for playing competitively — you know what I mean? There is a time of the month where you should not be playing competitive games as a woman, in my opinion,” he said back on September 2.

“This is my experience. I lived with one for a while, and she played a lot of League ranked. It was really obvious when she was getting super irritated at every little thing. I’m not trying to be sexist or anything, that’s just the way it was.”

Bwipo apologizes after FlyQuest suspension

Those resurfaced comments led to numerous women in esports hitting out at Bwipo, including Sjokz, who called her fellow Belgian’s comments “ignorant.” 

Bwipo ultimately apologized for his comments on September 10. “Hi everyone, I know I f*cked up. My comments were ignorant and disrespectful to women, including those close to me,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter). 

“I’m sorry to those I hurt. I regret using my platform to fuel vitriol and sexism instead of support, and I’ll be taking steps to reflect, listen, and do better.”

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 publisher Paradox have gotten the ball rolling on the “adjustments” they promised in response to the controversy over the game’s day-one paid DLC vampire clans.

As we’ve covered previously, the Toreador and Lasombra clans were originally revealed to be locked behind a purchase of either Bloodines’ £18.69/€21.99/$21.99 Shadows and Silk DLC pack, or the £74.99/€89.99/$89.99 premium edition that said DLC comes bundled with. Cue understandable unhappiness, and Paradox swiftly moving to declare they’d rejig some stuff before launch.

The first domino’s now fallen, and it’s refunds for PlayStation pre-orderers. “Anyone who pre-ordered the premium edition through the PlayStation Store will be contacted and refunded starting Monday, September 8th,” World of Darkness community developer DebbieElla announced on the Bloodlines 2 Discord. “You will be able to pre-order your premium edition copy again later, before the release on October 21st.”

The good news for us PC folks is that Paradox made clear this is just an “intentional first step” in their planned tweaks following the backlash. “We are working hard on the adjustments that we promised, and we will be able to tell you all the details on September 17th,” DebbieElla wrote. “Making significant changes like this involves many moving parts, and we want to make sure that we get it right with this change.”

So, a little longer to wait for info as to whether there’ll be changes to the DLC/editions and their pricing on PC. However, pulling existing pre-orders and then requesting folks make them again points towards a premium edition price drop being at least one of the measures Paradox are taking. Any change might make paying extra for the two clans a bit more palatable, but unless the premium edition’s brought down to match the price of the base game, dishing the DLC clans out at no extra cost, odds are the sour taste won’t come close to being washed away.

Paradox and Bloodlines developers The Chinese Room previously defended charging for Toreador and Lasombra vamps when our James asked them about the decision at Gamescom, citing the game’s changing scope.

“We have been expanding it from where we originally planned to land it, I think, constantly, and Paradox have been really good when we go, or when the clients go, or when Paradox go: ‘We should add a bit more here. Let’s push the date back.’ As you know, the date has pushed back, but that has been to fatten it out into something that we feel does land where the players want it,” Bloodlines 2 narrative director Ian Thomas said.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 to refund all PS5 Premium Editions following backlash over paywalled clans

From next week, anyone who pre-ordered their Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 Premium Edition via the PlayStation Store will be refunded.

Community developer DebbieElla told players the refunds were coming as part of recent “adjustments”, and confirmed we’ll get “all the details” on the changes on 17th September.

As we reported last week, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 publisher Paradox is rethinking its plan to charge for two of the six playable clans in the game following community feedback. The news came after publisher Paradox announced the release date for Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, 21st October, along with pricing details for the game. It was then we learned the company intended to charge £20 extra to access two clans in the game, via a Shadows and Silk content pack.

According to developer, The Chinese Room, these two clans represented content developed beyond what was originally planned for the game after it inherited development of Bloodlines 2 from Hardsuit Labs. Consequently, The Chinese Room’s reasoning was this was additional content developed for the game, so it would sell it as such at release. But not anymore.

Now, in a Discord post, DebbieElla writes: “We are working hard on the adjustments that we promised, and we will be able to tell you all the details on 17th September. Making significant changes like this involves many moving parts, and we want to make sure that we get it right with this change.

“Anyone who pre-ordered the Premium Edition through the PlayStation Store will be contacted and refunded starting Monday 8th September. You’ll be able to pre-order your Premium Edition copy later again, before the release on 21st October. Please note that this is an intentional first step in our planned course of action leading up to 17th September to deliver the best possible experience for you at launch.”

The post closed on thanking players for their patience, and later messages from DebbieElla confirm this only applies to this particular edition sold for PlayStation – purchases on other platforms are unaffected.

Some are now hoping this signifies all clans may be available in the base game, but as one player points out, however, “taking the clans out of the deluxe editions is the easy part. The hard part is trying to figure out what else they can put in there”.

In his Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 preview a few weeks back, Bertie wrote: “[T]his is a sequel to a cult RPG after all, and one based on a major tabletop RPG to boot. In this case it feels valid to crave a little more role-playing, a little more texture and depth to the game’s people and conversations. And so for now, a question mark remains”.

Justin Sun Faces Backlash After Urging WLFI to Unfreeze Tokens

Tron founder Justin Sun has once again found himself at the center of crypto controversy, this time over his frozen holdings in World Liberty Financials (WLFI).

The project blacklisted Sun’s wallet last week, freezing nearly 595 million WLFI tokens worth over $100 million at the time. Sun has since taken to social media, urging the team to unlock his assets and warning that such actions undermine investor trust.

Why Were Sun’s WLFI Tokens Frozen?

The dispute began after blockchain data revealed a wallet linked to Sun transferred nearly $9 million worth of WLFI tokens to an exchange. Shortly afterward, WLFI’s team blacklisted the address, effectively freezing his tokens.

Market observers claimed the move was designed to stop potential dumping that could further destabilize the token’s price, which has already lost more than 60% of its value since launch.

WLFI debuted at $0.46 but now trades near $0.18, raising concerns about whale activity and the project’s governance. Critics argue the blacklisting contradicts the very principles of decentralization that blockchain projects are supposed to uphold.

Sun Denies Dumping Allegations

In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Sun rejected claims of market manipulation, stating the transfers were merely “small deposit tests” and not intended for selling. He called the freeze “unreasonable” and insisted that all investors should be treated equally.

“Tokens are sacred and inviolable, this should be the most basic value of any blockchain,” Sun wrote. He added that unilateral freezes risk eroding confidence in WLFI, a project he supported early with both capital and strategic backing.

On-chain analysis from firms like Nansen has also suggested Sun was not directly responsible for WLFI’s sharp price decline, instead linking the sell-off to large market-maker activity.

Governance Concerns and Market Outlook

The standoff between Sun and WLFI has amplified investor concerns about centralization and transparency within the project. Critics warn that blacklisting wallets without clear communication risks damaging WLFI’s credibility, especially at such an early stage.

In an attempt to stabilize prices, the WLFI team has announced a buyback-and-burn program, including the destruction of 47 million tokens. However, uncertainty remains high as the dispute with Sun continues and market volatility weighs on investor sentiment.

For now, Sun is pressing WLFI to restore his rights and unlock his frozen tokens, while the broader crypto community debates whether the project can recover trust, or whether this controversy marks the start of deeper governance challenges.
