Over 50% of video game layoffs have been in California, says Game Changers award recipient

by admin September 5, 2025

The games industry has been wracked by layoffs in the last few years, but over half of all layoffs have been in California, with North America overall the worst hit country.

That’s according to Amir Satvat, who spoke to The Game Business on the topic. Satvar was the first recipient of the Game Changers award at The Game Awards 2024 for his work assisting laid-off employees across the industry.

“Over 70 percent, and in some years 75 percent, of the layoffs have been in North America,” said Satvat. “North America used to have 30 percent, 35 percent, 40 percent of the open roles, and that number is now down to 25 percent.”

Globally, employment in the games industry has increased since before the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, though that depends on region. While Asia has seen an increase in jobs, North America has seen its workforce in AAA studios cut by 15 to 20 percent.

“And here’s another stat,” added Satvat, “over 50 percent of the cuts globally have been in California. California AAA is like the epicentre of the difficulty.

“There is opportunity, but it may be that if you want to stay in the industry, being open to going to some of these places like China, like Japan, not forever, but for some amount of time, that’s going to become a larger part of the equation.”

The most high profile layoffs recently were from Microsoft back in June, which included the cancellation of Perfect Dark from the California-based The Initiative, though developers were affected on both sides of the pond.

So far this year, an estimated 4400 people have been laid off globally in the games industry.

Street Fighter 6 pro MenaRD is so good at the game his country gave him an award

by admin August 30, 2025

Street Fighter 6 pro MenaRD has been recognized by his home country of the Dominican Republic, which presented him with an award to honor his fighting game achievements.

Saul Leonardo ‘MenaRD’ Mena II is a professional fighting game player from the Dominican Republic. While he’s been competing since the days of Street Fighter IV, he first rose to fame after Street Fighter V’s release in 2016.

Back then, the Dominican Republic wasn’t a region known for fighting game prowess — but he put his country on the map by winning Capcom Cup in 2017 and went on to become one of the greatest players in SFV’s lifetime.

In fact, Mena is the first and only two-time Capcom Cup champion, having also taken the tournament for SFV in 2023. On top of this, he’s also a three-time Evo champion, having won Evo Japan in 2024 and 2025, as well as winning Evo Las Vegas in 2025.

Mena’s achievements have cemented him as one of the greatest Street Fighter players of all time, bringing him generational wealth that he used to impact his local fighting game scene. For instance, the ‘dojo’ where players would practice Street Fighter was a small, cramped venue that was highly secretive and suffered from frequent power outages.

After winning a staggering $250K from Capcom Cup 2017, he created a new place for them to play, sponsored other competitor’s trips to tournaments around the globe, and even started his own esports team, the Santo Domingo Tigers.

Mena is now a household name in the Dominican Republic, and to thank him for his positive impact, the country presented him with the Pride of Dominican Culture award on August 28, 2025 — the same day as his 26th birthday.

In an interview on the red carpet, Mena spoke about what it was like being recognized for such an achievement and what the award meant to him.

“In a crazy way, starting this gaming journey and experiencing what I’m experiencing right now, having so much success — that’s what it is, that’s what one works for, and what the community would like me to do,” he said.

MenaRD has helped both his family and his community come a long way since rising to fame, both of which he credits for helping him rise to the top.

“I feel that I am who I am because of my community,” he told me in an interview back in 2018. “Since they helped me have a better life, I will do my best to build a better community so the future generation can have it easier in the path of being a pro gamer. It’s my second family. [They have] always been super supportive when I represent, and super competitive when playing locally. I love my community.”

The deeply simulated roguelike strangeness of Caves of Qud won this year’s Hugo Award for Best Game or Interactive Work

by admin August 18, 2025

The Hugo Awards: they’re not just for science-fiction novels that make you think “I should read that one day” and never do. Now they’ve got an interactive category, so once a year you can be told how excellent one more videogame is, think “I should play that one day,” and then never get around to that either.

This year the winner of the Best Game or Interactive Work category is Caves of Qud, a game we gave a score of 94% to back in December so you can keep that “if it’s so good how come I’ve never heard of it” comment to yourself.

Caves of Qud, pronounced “cud”, is a roguelike so old-fashioned it’s barely got graphics, which fully simulates every NPC in its baffling world full of weirdos. To quote from our review, “The main quest takes you on a journey well-suited to pit stops, dotted with odd characters like a deaf-mute albino bear-porcupine gunsmith and a very rude talking fungus you have to bring with you by letting it grow on your skin.”

This year’s Hugo Award for Best Novel went to The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett and Best Series went to Between Earth and Sky by Rebecca Roanhorse. Dune Part Two picked up Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form while Star Trek: Lower Decks won Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form, which is a nice send-off for it. (The tie-in comic Warp Your Own Way picked up best Best Graphic Story or Comic as well.)

The Best Game or Interactive Work category was added to the Hugos back in 2021 as an experiment, when it was won by Hades. The experiment must have worked because it’s since become a permanent addition, with Baldur’s Gate 3 winning it in 2024.

The other nominees this year were 1000xResist, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, Tactical Breach Wizards, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which I will go to the grave defending no matter what anyone else thinks about it.
